I just recently upgraded to some Avid Juicy 5's, so I will tell you all how that goes later. Anyways, my experience with this brake is that it is very strong and well made for the price. It came with my bike, so I couldn't complain. It has adequate stopping power for light trails and for XC riders. | | Weaknesses: | Pads are hard to find and are very expensive. Also, modulation is horrible and they squeak alot. Modulation sucks, and it is very grabby. I also wasn't satisfied on the lever feel. I brake with one finger, and constantly had to stretch my hands. Not good. Also, there is no way to allign the caliper nor center it. Which means that I could never get it to stop rubbing. Furthermore, on steep decents, the brakes fade and you experience a loss of power. If my life depended on these brakes, I wouldn't be using them. 2)The moving caliper (one on the outside of the wheel) rubs no matter what I do to adjust it. As far as i can tell the bolt on the cable that goes to the caliper does nothing at all. Even if I loosen the bolt that clamps the line/cord in place and loosen it to the moving caliper there still is brake rub! I have tried almost everything and that pad just does not want to separate from the rotor!

For a much more demanding ride like DH or race, look elsewhere. You get what you pay for. Have yet to fail me. I don't get why some people complain about hard to adjust, it seems like a no brainer to me.
Its a good idea to upgrade the front disk to 8 inch if you're heavier than 80kg, it improves the braking power. I feel it has better performance for my weight once I've changed the front disk.
Besides that its also a good idea to change the cables if you have to adjust it often, its not the brake's problem. I've changed mine to Jagwire Ripcords, and I don't have to adjust the brakes at all. | | Value Rating:Overall Rating: |

'07 Columbia "iron bike", bent into shape and upgraded (Tektro/Forte disc brake on front) | | Bottom Line: | This Tektro IO kit (rebranded as Forte) came with two calipers, alloy levers, cable/housing, and adapters/mounting hardware. I used just the front caliper & cable/housing to upgrade my "iron bike" front wheel from V-brake to disc (saving the rest for a new build). This made a big improvement to my stopping power, verified during a 90-minute ride in pouring rain! I'm able to modulate the braking without difficulty, and the brake is more than powerful enough to lock the wheel. I didn't notice any problems until I bombed down a local steep hill, and I could not keep my speed down and almost crashed. For flat trails and slight hills they worked fine. | | Weaknesses: | The 160 mm IO's that came on my bike didn't have enough power to stop my bike on a fast, steep downhill descent. Bottom line, if they came on your bike, keep them until you feel you need more braking power. If you are in the market for new disc brakes, pass these up and buy some Avid BB7's for $50-$60 on sale.

A bike that's otherwise well setup for freeride. | | Bottom Line: | I've used these on mostly cross country trails so far and needless to say, I'm quite dissapointed. I've shimmed them so they're perfectly even - just a hair thickness of spacing on each side of the rotor and a perfectly adjusted cable - and I get outbraked by my 11 year old sister on her WalMart bike (actually).
They do a good job of slowing you down, but they're completely unsuitable for downhill, or anyone who likes to endo, or lockup either their front or rear tire. I could reccommend these only to lightweight beginner riders for light XC use only. I'm 6'3" and 200lbs with relatively strong hands/fingers and these brakes struggle to bring me to a stop.

Cost to performance ratio - great!
When tuned these brakes have a decent level of power. | | Weaknesses: | These require a lot of maintainance. Generally I'm adjusting the caliper once a week (80-100 miles) or one xc ride.
Pads - nowhere sells them! Not even the shop I got them from!!! | | Similar Products Used: | None | | Bike Setup: | GT XC2 | | Bottom Line: | These brakes will get you around a technical XC course but you'll be adjusting the caliper after every ride.
Generally speaking they are good but definately require a lot of tuning - you have to get the pads so you can only fit a hair between them and the disc or they simply don't produce the goods.
Basically I tune them and they work great - I use them for one XC session and by the end they, erm, aren't!
Still you get what you pay for and, for the price (I think these are the cheapest disc brakes on the market), they are good.
Would I buy these brakes as an upgrade? No - spend a bit more and save in the long run... if this is not an option then for it.
Would I buy a 400-500 quid bike with these on? Yes, they'll be great until you have saved for the upgrade.
If you have these and find the performance lacking you may try lightly sanding the pads to remove glazing... worked for me.
