Well... the piston stayed out, they needed bleeding and new pads, they SCREAMED! other piston stayed out, bleeding, new pads. two rides after all power lost had to pump the lever 2, 3 times to get it back each time you wanted to stop, bleeding. All this from my back break. Front one was fine. Set them um myself 20 minutes! Now... they work like a dream, perfect im 230 pound. Just get thru it all and sort all the teething problems out and... they could stop you falling out the sky.

Bottom Line:
After every race I have to re-align the brakes. Since the pads are so close to the rotors, even the tiniest shift will cause major rubbing trouble. These brakes would be awesome for people who ride on mild trails; they're a lot of trouble for me only because I have to brake hard on the trails that I ride, causing the brake to shift a little bit out of alignment every time I brake. Overall though, these are good brakes.

back brake's pads WAY too close to disk
Similar Products Used:

Bottom Line:
Came on an '09 Stumpjumper FSR Elite. Front I have no complaints with. Good power and modulation on both disks. Back brake's pads sit way too close to disk. Redid pads (simple push out & business card trick to fully re-bleeding brakes)--the auto-adjusting pad spacing just seems to sit the pads too close, MUCH closer than the front. I don't get it Since the 185 mm disk is always a bit not straight (I'm on my second--another fix that didn't work) it'll rub. A lot. Back brake also becomes noisy with use.
Avid is also difficult to contact (email not easy to find--phone calls are a pain when one has to work oneself), and I'm thinking of switching Formulas or something--they seem to have much better average results, and maybe fewer lemon units, too. Question What hydraulics can you actually set the pad spacing on (not where it contacts during the stroke, but the actual spacing from the disk), in case the disk warps in the field?
Rating is low because I had to buy a new disk (the rear warped, possibly unrelated to brake, but the new one is now wobbly, too) and a bleed kit to try to fix them.

Great improvement over my previous brakes. They are very light and incredible stopping power. I ride my bike to work, but I also hit the trails pretty hard. I have fallen a few times, and I wrecked once jumping (18 stitches and a broken helmet) but it was not the brakes fault, the brakes are still fine and work great. They are very durable, as are the disks. I was worried the ultra light disks would bend quickly but they have not. Overall a great product for any rider, might be over kill for the gentle cross country rider.

These are great brakes at a good pricepoint. Power is perfect for all mountain bikes, and light DH bikes, maybe a bit too much for xc bikes depending on your riding style. I can understand why one reviewer said they are good brakes for long steep DH, but poor for slow stuff. I see where he's coming from, you have to learn to put less energy into the lever if you have a light bike, which is always a good thing if you ask me. If you're on a light bike and are a rider that tends to panic and squeeze the brakes too hard, especially the front brake, these aren't the right brakes for you. If your bike is under 30lbs these brakes will lock up with little effort, but there's good modulation, you just have to know how to work the brakes to your benefit. I've experienced the noise and vibrations that others have, I also experienced this once with my old juicy 7's? Now my brakes are quite, unless wet, and no vibrations? I haven't changed anything? A friend has the CR's and has become fed up with the noise and wants to sell them. I'm happy with mine, and don't know why they were noisy, and now quite? I would give these 5 peppers if they came with a better bleed, and didn't make noise. Overall I'm happy with these brakes, and think they are a good buy for most riders.

Bottom Line:
My brakes came from the factory with very uneven deadband- one contacted almost immediately and the other had a really long throw. I had to bleed them before I could even ride the bike. Now, fully adjusted, the rear has the worst squealing/ howling/ screeching noise. As others have said, it vibrates through the bike and up into my fillings. Gives me the willies so much I avoid braking. I end up over-using my front brakes and because these things are so powerful, I've gone over the bars a couple of times (my own stupidity, I know).
Today, I got confirmation from Avid's tech service line (they don't advertise the number, but I found it in a Lennard Zinn article: 1-800-346-2928) that they are releasing a service bulletin (in about a month- so mid August of 09?) and will be replacing the rear rotors--I don't know if this is bike specific to the Stumpjumper 29er, or universal to Elixirs, but it's good news to me- wish it would come sooner.

Bottom line, these are an excellent "bang for your buck" kind of brakes. Takes some tweaking to get the adjustment correct, but I did it myself so that probably has a lot to do with it. Avid brakes don't always have the best factory bleeds, but I guess I got lucky - they still feel great after a few hundred kilometers.
I went from a set of Hayes nines to this, and what a difference. Codes were too much brake for me. If you can afford hope or magura, go for it. If you're like the rest of us, you would be hard pressed to find a brake with better stopping power and modulation for this price (paid 160 for the set). Boooyakasha.

Bottom Line:
I'm a chatterbox, so pull up a chair and brew some coffee.
Originally my bike came stock with 160/160 BB5s, which were barely sufficient even for my light cross country and urban purposes. I decided to buy myself a new set of brakes, and my first instinct was to get a pair of BB7s, new levers, and some bigger G2s. After pricing it out, I found that there wasn't a huge price difference between the BB7 setup and the Elixir R setup, which comes with Cleansweep G3s (and levers, obviously.) I ordered a 185 for the front and the back.
Installation was, in my case anyway, very tricky. My forks use a 74mm mount, and the 185mm Avid adapter is not exactly conducive to a straight or even easily adjusted fitment because of the long screws that it uses. This issue is compounded further by the fact that the Elixir R pads must fit extremely close to the rotor because there is no pad adjustment function. If you have a bent rotor, forget it. Even a slight warp will ruin your day. Because of the close fit between the pads and the rotor and the difficulty of centering at least some of the mounting arrangements, you should plan to spend a good amount of time getting these dialed in.
My first few rides were... noisy. I found that, after ten miles or so, something on my bike was letting out a shriek similar to nails on a chalkboard. I figured it was my brakes, but it was making the noise all the time, on the brakes or not. Eventually I found that the fronts were rubbing very slightly on one side, and when the rotors began to heat up the noiseworks started. There is some lateral adjustment between the caliper and the rotor, but the 185mm adapter makes it very hard to take advantage of. Eventually I was able to get it pretty much perfect, but the amount of time it took to do so is disturbing.
Stopping power is very impressive. The modulation is more than wide enough to allow for slow decelerations as well as full on lock-up-the-tires-and-throw-you-overboard stops. The power to send you into orbit is there, but only if you choose to pull the lever hard enough to get there. That being said, the activation point is fairly short and I don't have a problem using one finger for most of my purposes.
For the money, these are fine brakes. If you are set on Avids and have a few extra bucks, get the CRs. They will save you a few headaches.

With I'm listening to music, the brakes aren't that loud. Other than the reverb from the noise that goes directly into your crotch (some may say is a positive),the brakes work fantastic. I highly recommend 185mm in the front and 160mm in the rear minimum.

Strengths:
Good stopping power. Better lever feel than Juicy.
Weaknesses:
Plastic master cylinder internals. Rear Brake came leaky on brand new specialized. Contacted Avid and they sent out an overhaul kit. Master piston is held in with small plastic clip, which was broken, causing the brake to leak.

Bottom Line:
Good brakes. Make sure to properly bed them in or they will make a lot of noise.

Bottom Line:
Decent brake for the cost. Just generally not thrilled with my purchase. The loudest front brake I've EVER heard. After some free pads and a rotor straight from Avid, the front brake seems to be all better. Just not the stopping power I expected.
