Strengths: Bullet proof, quiet, consistant, makes Avid brakes work right.Weaknesses: A bit heavyBottom Line: The 8" heat shaeding rotor made my Avid brakes useable. I live at the bottom of a 3000' descent. It's a blast with some long descents and twisty single track. But it's really tough on brakes. The 6" stock rotor whinned, sqeeled, gobbled, and dragged after every ride. I was not going to be sanding rotors when I should be riding. The Formula brakes on my other bike don't need that! Instead of tossing the bakes I tried the 8" HS rotor on the front. Once set-up (Avids are a bit finiky), they work great. No probelms at all not. They are reliable, consistant, quiet, and don't fade. They make hte Elixrs perform as advertised. Highly recommend these rotors.
P.S. As with all brakes and rotors (esp. Avid), make sure you bed them in properly (gently)!http://www.bikeradar.com/gear/article/workshop-how-to-bed-in-disc-brake-pads-31337/

Strengths: My first time at Downieville I realized how much I still have to learn... ;-) As a result of that the 160mm stock rotors from the Avid CR's started to "fade" as they were getting hot: NOT the right time for weak brakes. I read about the HS1's and decided to give them a try. I ordered the 180mm rotors with adapters and after a short brake-in phase they behaved much smoother, better modulation, more "bite", are more quiet than the stock rotors. Don't expect miracles from getting new rotors, but they do behave much better.Weaknesses: Ordering the right IS/post adapters can be tricky, since most Avid rotors that size are 185mm, while the HS1's are 180mm.Bottom Line: Effective and inexpensive upgrade.
improved modulation, less fading, less squeaky (more quiet)
