Price Paid:

Purchased At:

Strengths:
Ease of installation, strong, good looking, inexpensive, allows fitment of wide tires
Weaknesses:
none, unless if you need to have your brakes say XT or XTR
Bike Setup:
Older Cannodale F700, No tabs for disc brakes :(
Bottom Line:
I bought these brakes (April 2009) to use in the front of my Cannodale F700. I was already running an older (+/-2001) Deore V-brake in the back. The new Deore was to replace the flexy stock Avids that were still on the bike. I also wanted a brake that had more of an arc to it as I wanted to run a wider tire in the front. To my surprise, the design of the newer Deore brake was actually beefier (the arms are a bit thicker around the base) than the older one I’d already had experience with. This translates to a very stiff feel and great braking. If you've got mediocre v-brakes on your bike now, try these. They’re only about $20. Your braking will improve and so will your confidence.I can’t see spending a lot more on fancier V-Brakes. These are easy to set-up and get the job done very well.

Strengths:
Great value for the product. Responsive in comparison to the "parallel" links system of the XT brakes. I have not had this brakes for a long time but the material and paint job seems resistant to corrosion.
Weaknesses:
This brake set is slightly heavier than my old LX V's. However, it is not a big deal on a trekking bike. Shimano could have provided a better material for the pad. Spring tension on either side should be better balanced.
Similar Products Used:
shimano XT V 2006, Avid Juicy 7, old 1999 shimano LX V brakes
Bike Setup:
HASA TR9 trekking bike with mixed componennts from Shimano Deore, Deore LX and XT
Bottom Line:
A great product for the price I have paid as a replacement for my old LX brakes. Replacement with Koolstop pads would be an investment.

Strengths:
Good overall quality, durable.
Weaknesses:
Cartridge type pads would be nice.
Bike Setup:
Above average mtb.
Bottom Line:
These brakes are very good built, sturdy and durable. Supplied pads can be replaced with cartridge type pads for easy pad change. Stock pads are still in good contidition after a year though. Doesn't shave rims. Have lots of power in dry conditions and power in wet is more than your tyres can handle. Don't be fooled at parallel link crap, these brakes will deliver you all you need for a funny price if you're not a light-o-maniac.
