Favorite Trail:Raccoon Mtn, Chattanooga
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $3000.00
Purchased At:Local Bike Shop
Strengths:Strong, Light, efficient for a FS, Fast, love the Orange Anodized Finish, quick handling.
Weaknesses:Pivot Bearings need frequent servicing (1200 miles for me)
Similar Products Used:onwed none. but tried out many FS bikes for short rides.
Bike Setup:2005 Blur Classic, Fox 100 RLC Pushed, Fox RP3, XT cranks running 2x9, 650b front wheel and tire, Wheels by Daves Speeddream wheels: CK hubs and Stans Olympic rims with stans sealant, Kenda Nevegals 2.1, 120mm Syntace Stem, Extralite Seatpost, WTB LaserV saddle, Carbon Bars, Magura Marta brakes 180/160, SRAM X9 rear der., XTR frt, gripshift
Bottom Line:I love this bike. I replaced all the bolts with Ti or alum, and have weight down to 25.5 lbs. The bike excels in climbing and hooks up magically. At 59 yrs old, I appreciate the FS, but don't want to give up too much efficiency. This frame lets me stand up at the top of a steep climb and gut it out without excessive bob. With the recent addition of the 650b front wheel and tire, the bike is even faster, but lost a little in steer-ability in steep climbs. The change improved ultra steep descent comfort margin. Overall, I would recommend this change for the blur classic.

I have taken short and demo rides on many other FS bikes and never felt one that felt anywhere near as good as this one. One example was an Ellsworth Epiphany. It was set up for a guy with my same weight, and it was plush but bobbed way more than I was used to. Riding buddies have ridden my bike and want one just like it. Most other bikes were too plush and robbed too much energy, or the suspension just did not move enough. My routine trail is pretty smooth but parts are rocky and rooty, with sections that are steep up and down.

I ride 2-3 times per week, maybe 12-15 miles each time. Wet conditions and routine hose-off afterward about half the time. Have had to rebuild the lower bearings about every 1200 miles or so. With SC tools, about 2-3 hour job for me. So wish this was not the case, but am willing to maintain the pivots because I love the bike. I am sold on this VPP technology. The newer pivots have grease fittings and should solve this issue.

I am 5'-9 1/2", weigh 157 lbs. wear 30" jeans. This is a Blur Classic Medium frame. IMHO, I am the tallest person that should ride the medium frame(in the Classic). I chose it over the large because I wanted it to be quick handling. Had to go to 120mm stem and seat all the way back, but fits perfectly now, and I like the weight over the front tire that I get with this set-up.

Strengths:Light, strong, plush down hill, fast uphill.
Weaknesses:Requires a lot of upkeep, but what full suspension bike doesn't.
Similar Products Used:GT LTS-2000
Bike Setup:Best of everything.
Bottom Line:This is an awesome trail bike. I was over an hour faster on my normal 25 mile ride. with about 5000 ft of climbing. Super plush up and down with very little bob. Since I got this bike I have not been pass on a ride and its been over a year. I ride mostly fire roads and single tracks. Now that I have the bike setup it is the best bike that I have ever ridden for smooth to medium rough trails. Super light, super fast. Thanks Santa Cruz for the amazing bike. Highly recommend.

Bottom Line:Solid bike that has never let me down, I have done 5 ultra endurance rides and believe I must stick w/ a FS ride for these races. only down side was the pivots, it appears the new bikes have this taken care of. I plan to ride this one for 5 years b4 I can get another and the new carbon blur looks like it in 2011.

Strengths:The Blur is a great bike. Set up right, it is fantastic.
Weaknesses:Can't be sure. I bought mine used and have added the things I like best.
Similar Products Used:Specialized Hard Rock, Specialized Rock Hopper FS A1 Comp., Rocky Mountain Slayer.
Bike Setup:XT shifters and deraileurs. Hayes 9 discs. Fox RP23 rear shock and Fox Float Trail Tune Fork. Easton EA70 Bar, Thompson Elite Stem and Seatpost. WTB seat. FSA DH Pig Headset and FSA XC-300 Wheelset. WTB Mutano and Moto Raptor tires.
Bottom Line:I love the bike. It rides great and handles the bumps well. Loved my RM Slayer, but don't do drops like I used to. This bike is lighter. As for the creaking squeaking complained about, I haven't had it.
And here's a potential fix. The rear tire throws gunk into the VPP pivot point. Very discreetly, I put black electrician's tape across the gaps where the gunk would hit the bearings. It's a black Blur, so it doesn't show. I think the barrier of the tape keeps dirt out of the bearings and keeps the bike from squeaking.

Strengths:Overall good bike. Climbs well, dependable for me.
Weaknesses:Wish it was more active under braking.
Similar Products Used:Turner 5 spot, k2 Attack, Giant Trence and Yukon, Ironhorse warrior(?), Mongoose Fairlane, Kona, Specialized Stumpjumper
Bike Setup:usual
Bottom Line:I have ridden this 2004 Blur for 4 years now, and I can say that it is a very good bike. It climbs exceptionally well. It is not the most plush ride, but it is efficient.

For me, it has been a very dependable ride. Yes, it creaks sometimes and makes noise, and it bothered me when I first got the bike, but I guess I've gotten used to it. And I truely believe, that the noise itself has gotten substantially less after the first year. I just don't think it is a big deal. Right now, it's in a quiet phase.
I have not had to change or repair any linkage at all, and it is still working as well as ever. In the first year, I used to take aprart the linkages and clean them, but since then all I do is make sure that none of the bolts are loose every few months or so. To give you perspective, I probably ride 3 weekends per month, about 15 to 20 miles, cross country with enjoying some technical descents at times, about 11 months out of year since I live in Socal. I have crashed it number of times, and most I have done is 3 feet drops. I think the frame is very well built.

It descends pretty darn well for a crosscountry focused bike. I just wish it be more active rear suspension under braking. Fox fork is great, and 5th element shock has held up nicely. Tubeless conversion was well worth the effort.

This bike is not perfect. But I have yet to ride "the perfect" bike. I can say that after riding it for 4 years, I love this bike. And because it does what it is meant to do very well, in a dependable manner, I give it 5 stars.

Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $1800.00
Purchased At:Mojo Wheels
Strengths:This is a follow up to my previous review. I have finally overhauled my bike after 3 1/2+ years of riding, and I still have no issues with the pivots. No noise, no slop.
Weaknesses:The only weakness I can find probably has more to do with me. This bike requires proper set-up to work properly. Since my weight fluctuates, the set-up changes based on the time of year I am riding. Oh, during muddy rides, the linkage acts as a mud-shelf like the old 990 u-brakes. I guess since I clean my bike after dirty rides, that has helped the longevity of my pivots.
Bike Setup:Just switched to the new XTR 970 shifters and rear derailer. This new XTR is awsome!! I have had Sram XO on my bike for the last few years both twist shifters and the Sram triggers. Shimano just put Sram back in their place.
Bottom Line:This bike does everything very well. I can maitain traction on cliimbs whether sitting or standing, and fly downhill with amazing traction and control. I did have my fork and rear shock rebuilt (no pivots) and this feels like a brand new bike!

Price Paid: $1699.00
Strengths:The best full suspension on the market. The virtual pivot point really makes a difference. Short wheel base. Great customer service.
Weaknesses:High maintenance pivot points, other than that, nothing...
A bit on the pricey side. Lack of color options for a bike that expensive.
Bike Setup:Full 2007 XTR, Mavic SL rims.
Bottom Line:If you own a Blur classic, I would recommend upgrading the bearings to the pro pack and getting the Ti link for the top pivot. Also, Santa Cruz has upgraded the bottom link. It no longer has holes on in the middle of the axles. This eliminates some "creaking" issues the Blur has because it doesn't let dirt into the axle. Make sure you disassemble your pivots ounce a month and clean them. This will eliminate any "creaking" issue that everybody complains about.

Purchased At:Spin Cycle
Strengths:Excellent handling characteristics. Required some tweaking to get it just right. Switched out shimano dual control rapid rise for sram x-9 shifters and xo derailler. Also swicthed to a shorter stem, which gave a more centered position between the wheels. Handling improved dramatically.
Weaknesses:Original shimano drivetrain caused ghost shifting, which totally disappeared with sram components. Ghost shifts could be eliminated with shimano but you have to adjust your derailer while on the bike with suspension weighted. The use of sram eliminated this need entirely.
Bike Setup:2005 large Orange anodized frame, 5th element shock, fox talas fork. Sram x-9 shifters, xo rear derailler, shimano xt front derailler. Shimano xt disc brakes, shimano hollowtech crankset with race face rings, sram 11-34 cassette. Race face deus 90mm stem.
Bottom Line:Great bike has served me well over the last 2 + years. With some tweaking the bike is absolutely perfect, handles like a dream. Downhills and rails corners awesomely. Climbs almost anything. I ride 2-3 times per week and put the bike through its paces. I've never had any problems with the pivots (keep 'em tightened), or the 5th element shock. Once you dial in the suspension and rebound correctly - no worries!

Strengths:Great handling, light weight, envious head-turners, sixth sense feedback
Weaknesses:develoveped some creaking after two plus years of use, 2-3 rides per week, but a little cleaning and lube cured it.
Similar Products Used:Cannindale Gemini (freeride set-up), several hardtails, tried all the rest as a bike shop guy.
Bike Setup:Bright red powder coat '05 frame(large). Full Sram XO with carbon rear derailiur and twist style shifters, King headset, Hope Mono-Mini with red floating rotors to match the PG990 cassette, Mavic Crossmax Enduro Wheelset with Stans and Maxxis Larson TT tires(I weigh 205 lbs and have literally stepped on these wheels during get-offs and they have only needed truing once in 2+ years), Race Face ISIS Next LP cranks, FSA Ti BB, Shimano 959 Pedals, Thompson stem and post, Easton Monkeylite Carbon Bar, WTB seat ti-rails
Bottom Line:This is the best bike I have ever owned. I have had no mechanical trouble whatsoever. This thing climbs better than any hardtail I ever rode and descends like a rocket. Traction feedback feels telegraphed. I have sold all of my other bikes Habanero Ti Cyclocross, Gemini, DBR Vertex TR hardtail. All of these other bikes were set up with top end components, but I just never wanted to ride anything but this Blur. The Best bike ever.

Purchased At:John Henry's
Strengths:Clean tide construction, good dealer network in my area, strong front triangle, relatively light with my 5th Element air shock, Anodized finish is very durable.
Weaknesses:Bearings require seasonal replacement despite relatively low mileage. Seat tube collar could be reduced in height (2006 models addressed this point). Anodized finish fades with regular exposure to sun. Suspension is not very active while braking or pedalling.
Similar Products Used:only hardtails.
Bike Setup:2005 Blur (purchased new) - XTR drivetrain, Thomson Elite seatpost, Raceface Ti BB, Raceface Turbine LP cranks, Eggbeater Candy Ti, Easton Carbon Monkeylite riser bar, Truvativ Stylo Team stem, Chris King headset, Hope Mono M4 brakes, Mavic XC717 rims, American Classic hubs, DT Competition spokes, Marzocchi Bomber SL 4", Specialized Ti body geometry saddle, King Ti bottle cage
Bottom Line:Good cross country rig. Takes the "ump" out of bumps but still not as efficient as a hardtail (but then again, what FS is?). I have mine down to about 25 lbs so it's reasonably light (although mucho $ on parts to get it so). My rear hub seems to be developing play, could the twisty rear triangle on the 2005 and earlier Blur be contributing to this?

This rig could be built up to 24 lbs with off the shelf parts.

My 4" travel fork seems well matched to the 4.5" rear. I can't see a 3" fork working very well.

Strengths:Rides well, very predictable in the corners. Gives confidence in rocky terrain, sand and mud. 4-link virtual suspension works great. If you are the original buyer and it fits you properly I'd probably give it 3 Chili's for Value, 4 overall.
Weaknesses:2 year warranty - no warranty at all if not original owner. Seat tube on mine broke at the bottom bracket - not a dent or ding on the rest of the bike! Santa Cruz admitted problem but blew me off when I tried to get fixed.

Bottom Line:DO NOT buy this bike USED unless you are willing to write it off completely should something go wrong. Santa Cruz will not help you at all. They even said "they had a manufacturing defect with the large 2003 Blur frames" but didn't offer to fix or replace at discount.

Bottom Line:After over 4 years of riding the Blur I still love it. Cant compare to other rides or I should say I havent in quite some time now. Had a major overhaul this Spring. Replaced all the pivots. Right now I do have some rattling going on somewhere and havent figured out where or why. Might be the chain slapping against the tire. I would love to demo the Nomad but I cant find a dealer that carries Santa Cruz in Northern NJ other than 1 who doesnt have any bikes in the showroom. Seems like out west Santa Cruz is huge. Back east its tough to find a dealer. Yet, all the magazines rave about the bike. I still love it but might be on borrowed time now. We'll see.

Purchased At:Utah ski/bike shop - frame only
Strengths:Handling, weight, responsiveness, screams downhill. Solid, reliable.
Weaknesses:Ghost shifting, pedal drag due to changes in geometry while riding through rough terrain pedaling (also associated with the ghost shifting). Bearings were not so much an issue with me. They seem to have lasted for a reasonable amount of time, as with any new technology with lots of moving parts there will be much more maintenance involved. Less maintenance on a Mtn Bike means no suspension. Unfortunately forks and shocks, bearings etc need rebuilding/replacing every season to keep your bike in shape. I feel too many reviews here are slamming the Blur because of the bearing issue. I raced and rode this bike hard and it has served me well.

Bottom Line:Had this ride for over 2 years. Still love it. The bearings squeek and creak over time and mine are being replaced but is a bike, things happen. Thats not my complaint. My complaint is the lack of dealers who sell/work on this bike in my area. I have a shop I would love to work with other than the shop where I bought it from because they just flat out suck at repairs. Problem is that they dont sell Santa Cruz and flat out told me they had some reservations taking the Blur apart and trying to figure out how to put it back together. At the price I paid for it I feel like a bought the top of the line BMW but I live in Bagdad. No one can change the freakin oil! Santa Cruz needs to get more shops to sell and work on their products at least in the northern NJ area. At this pace I'd be better off buying a high end Specialized or Cannondale, at least most of the shops sell them.

Bottom Line:I agonised over this purchase for ages. Trying to justify the cost of the Blur over the other bikes. Ended up getting a slightly used bike for a reasonable price. There are not many on the second hand market in Oz.

I was surprised just how quick I settled into the bike. Many of my mates who have gone from hardtails onto softtails have said that there was a decent period of adjustment getting used to the plush travel. Not with the Blur. You just dont realised that the suspension is working until you look down.

Extremely efficent pedalling, is amazing when you hammer the pedals all the energy goes into forward motion rather than suspension. I am taking much cleaner lines now, with increased confidence.

My lap times with the Blur on my regular tracks are within a minute of the best times I have ever set on a hardtail, and I have only been riding the bike a couple of weeks.

I am 6'1 185lbs. Large is fine. Very easy to setup from firm for the tech tracks to plush for longer trail runs. A great "do it" all bike.

Bottom Line:VPP works exactly like it should and the compromise between the 3 aspects of Dual Suspesion bikes, namely Pedal Bob, Terrain induced suspension action and pedal/chain feedback has landed pretty well in the pedal/chain feedback camp which if i had to chose would be where i'd want the compromise so that's all good. I ride mine pretty soft for long adventure races, etc and the only way it bobs is hard hammering out of the saddle, all good. Otherwise the bike is responsive and very well balanced which really allows you to throw it around with confidence. If you're looking for a dual bike that pedals great uphill but lets you have a whole lot of fun going down and won't leave your undercarriage finished after a long day then this is it.

Now onto the bad stuff...frame bearings should last longer than 6months, Santa Cruz reckon you should get 12-18months (probably acceptable) but myself and a lot of others with blurs around here are getting 4-8months from the bearings in the small link behind the bottom bracket...furthermore these are proprietary bearings so you can't replace them with cheaper and better bearings from SKF for example (like i do with my american classic hubs)
One last thing, the thread inserts for the bottle cage bolts have also come loose which has prevented me from using my bottle cages now (the bolt is now fixed in the insert and just turns with it so i can't get either out the frame)...not what you'd expect from a frame that costs this much!

worth 5 chilli's for the performance but loosing one for the reliability and build quality issues

Strengths:Exceptional bike overall. The balance and stability are truly amazing and after almost 3 years I am still in love with this bike. The VPP works well and the feel, geometry and balace are confidence inspiring. The bike sucks it all up but pedals responsively.
Weaknesses:The only issues I had were frame creak before the prescribed 1 year rebuild mark. I rebuilt the frame myself and Santa Cruz was helpful with the couple of questions the guide did not address. The chainline isn't the best, but isn't bad either. Neither of these can overshadw the 5 chili mark.

Bottom Line:I'm 180, ride 2-3 times a week and if I destroyed it tomorrow, I would buy another one without hesitation. One of the reasons I bought it was because of the unanimous rave reviews on mtbr at the time, and they were right on. It is a perfect fit and I really couldn't be happier with it. The few times I've called SC they have been helpful.

Bottom Line:This bike will change the way you ride and the trails you've ridden a thousand times will no longer be familair. The tricky climbs are simplified by traction and control while the technical downhills you've white knuckled down before are reduced to pure exhiliration. Another rider commented that "too much confidence" was the only weakness of this bike and I tend to agree as my downhill speed has increased probably 20%...that first crash ain't going to be pretty. I debated the purchace for several months given the price and the sheer number of models on the market. This bike is the most fun you'll have on two wheels and while you're flying down that trail you'll wonder why you ever thought twice.

Strengths:After two years of riding this frame, it is still one of the best. How's this for a comparison: At Kaena Point from the Yokohama Beach side, we take 3 bikes - a Truth, a Spyder, and a Blur. We take turns riding the bikes over a rocky stretch of road over 50 yards. The Ellsworth and Spyder feel sketchy. The Blur totally stable. The first two are XC racers and the Blur is a trail bike. But this test really wakes you up as what a trail bike is all about. If you are a weekend warrior and do the trails, this bike is your best bet. Makes you a better rider.

Weaknesses:None. Bike does what it's supposed to do perfectly.

Bottom Line:If you want to start off at a lower cost and still ride a great frame, buy one of the used Santa Cruz Blur frames that come up on eBay or mtbr.com. They are going for less that $900 now and with some judicious buying of top grade used components, you can put a fantastic handling bike together for $1500-$2000.

Strengths:Efficient at pedaling, relatively stiff, SC Parts Spec are impressive, Great value for the money, Makes descending rocky, technical terrains seem easy. Climbing on fireroads or smooth terrain is easier with VPP. Love the way it handles and it's beautiful to look at. I can ride this bike for hours grinning like a fool!
Weaknesses:Climbing steep loose terrain can be tricky, you need to be alert not to spin out. At times, I hit my pedals on rocks/boulders. Lower pivot link is a dirt and pebble magnet. Envious glances from other riders.

Bottom Line:This is a follow-up from my 1st post. So far so good, no real issues to report. I was expecting to pull out my bearings and overhaul them but with regular lubing it is holding out and still quiet. I was told by a fellow rider in a hard tail it should be called a Ninja bike when I surprised and passed him up a hill climb.

I just upgraded the rear triangle for the bigfoot (2005 model) and now I can use bigger tires without worrying about clearance or mud packing up on rainy rides.

The Blur is a very capable trail bike and when I'm not riding it, I can't seem to stop staring at it even after calling it a day.

Strengths:Ideal all mountain bike, great pedaling, really great descender, quality felt in secure handling and "feel", quiet ride once chainstay protector is installed. Made in USA.
Weaknesses:High maintenance just like ALL full suspension bikes. 5th Element Shock fails every 6 months of riding @every 50 rides cross country. Just replaced with 06 Push Fox RP3. Rear tire clearance is poor. Water gets down into BB and will destroy integrated/cartridge/"sealed" bottom brackets.
Similar Products Used:Yeti AS3 1999, with Risse Astro 5 shock, Psylo fork firm kit, still a great bike!

Lastly, Red Schwinn Stingray wireless computer and an old piece of MoJO I found on the trail years ago.
Bottom Line:1) you need to run external bottom bracket bearings
2) 5th Element Air shock is nice, light and plush until it breaks/sticks/blows all it oil, etc. (I weigh 180)
3) keep the pivots clean and lubed and you will have no problems with squeeks, pops or stick-tion as with all Full Suspension bikes.
4)Have your bushings replaced or do it yourself as soon as the bike feels like the headset is rocking using the "brake & shake" test...if you headset is not really loose, etc.
5)Great to use a variable travel fork so you can really appreciate going downhill on rough trails with this bike. The Minute 3 SPV matches the ride on this bike well, Fox TALAS would be my second choice.
6)I decided to buy a new shock for the Blur vs buying a Yeti 575, If I needed a second bike to go with my Blur, that would be it but my first bike is the BLUR.

I have had one frame crack and a link break. Customer service has been great. The creaking drives me nuts sometimes, but you have to stay on top of taking care of the pivot points. The problem with them is when you sweat you drip right ont them and that causes the problems.

I recently went back to a hard tail, which is faster up hill. I like it, but man the Blur is way more comfortable and faster down hill. Which makes it more fun to ride. This bike chews up the bumps and spits them out, Get this bike and you will have a grin ear to ear after riding.

Full Shimano XT (Racface Deus Cranks Mavic crossmax XLs) Fox TALAS RLC fork, set at 4 inches and 80 pounds of air
Panaracer fire xc pro tires 40 lbs front and 45 rear.
the bike is about 26 pounds with all the acessories on it.
I am 6'2, 185 pounds.
Bottom Line:The bike performs very well in just about every aspect, far better than any bike I tried out. It handles very well, it decends phenomenally, especially considering its 4.5 inches of travel. The trail conditions this year were harsh. Lots of mud and significant trail erosion causing lots of rough pathces, the blur went through them with ease, hitting the pedals more than I used to, and never having a mud clearance problem. It has almost no bobbing, except in very low RPM top gear cruising on the street, a non issue. As mentioned below by many, the bike climbs well; a trait of fine design, but once there is enough torque, the rear end gets almost-hartail stiff and you have to change your climbing habits to accomodate this. I have managed to get used to it for the most part. Sometimes it catches me off guard in a loose section, but I am probably further up than I was on my old bike. To be honest, that is a very miniscule problem compared to the problems most suspension designs have. My Blur frame had a stupid problem when I got it though: it had not been faced. Being a former rocky mountain owner, I really think every high end frame like this should come with that, Rocky's do. I had to pay about $80 to get the headset, BB, and disk mounts done. (disks were about 10 degrees off square!) After about a week of riding, a peice of filler rod started rolling around inside the swingarm too. I can't seem to get it out, so I have a peice of excess aluminum still rattling inside. So, in summary, it has a good design that works very very well, despite that one wee quirk, but they cheaped out on their finish work, which detracts from the value rating. If you are someone who wants a great XC bike, buy one of these already built. If you want a blur for something else, there are more suitable bikes for freeriding, local cruising and XC racing. I had a alot of hassle, if you are building up a frame, give yours a good inspection before buying, even online like me. It really does work great though, no complaints about performance at all.

Strengths:I originally reviewed my bike 1-29-05. I stated it was a great ride but a "maintenance nightmare". I have since broken the original blur frame. I will have to give the boys at Santa Cruz praise for their handling of the problem. My frame was replaced without a hassle (free of charge) and they even allowed me to upgrade to an anodized finish because they no longer make a dark blue powder coat finish. What a difference this frame is from the original "creaking machine' that I rode for two years. The creaking is gone and the time spent cleaning and greasing the rear triangle is now spent in the saddle. Santa Cruz now has a loyal customer for life. Why buy any other XC frame when you have the perfect ride and a company that backs their problems like true profesionals.I delt with "Willie" at SC through my local SC dealer and he did everything he promised.

Other than feeling a little sluggish on the cilmbs especially when hitting a bump in the granny gear, this bike is awesome.
After the ride I sent an email to Santa Cruz asking if I could pump up the shock pressure to the max. They responding with "yes, that is not a problem." They did wonder if I wanted a harsh ride though....
...Second ride impressions...
With the adjusted shock pressure, I rode the same trails as the first day but in reverse to test the bike with steeper, longer climbs. This bike is the onlt bike I need, hands down. I cleared obstacles with ease that I would not ride on my Ti hardtail. The climbing of this bike is "now" bob-free and mega plush, what more does one want.
On a side note:
The Shimano XT integrated levers are the bomb! I thought it may take me a while to get used to them but I was wrong. It feels so natural to keep my hands in one position and brake and shift with just my 2 fingers, no palm rotation needed to up shift to that middle ring!!
And also of course the XT Shimano Hydraulics blow Avid Mechanicals away!!

Bottom Line:I've been riding this bike all spring/summer and have a couple thousand kilometers on it so I think it's time to give it a review.

I've had no troubles with loose/sqeaky pivots or bearings. I try not to ride in excessively muddy conditions so I would have been really suprised if I had somehow managed to wear out these parts.

I find my Blur to be superior to my Specialized (noted above)in almost all areas with one noteworthy exception:

The Blur has noticeable pedal feedback when riding steep technical trails in the granny ring. I believe this is characteristic of the design so there's nothing to be done about it. My Specialized does not exhibit this annoying trait (but has a few of it's own).

I've been happy with the parts group so far and haven't had any mechanical issues, period. I praise Santa Cruz for specing a FULL XT parts group. I'm suspicious of companies that mix and match parts groups for marketing purposes; you won't get the benefit of an XTR rear derailure if every other part of your drivetrain is Deore or worse.

There is some uncertainty around the Bontrager wheels because there are no identifying marks on them short of the Bontrager name. Did Santa Cruz cheap out on the wheels? I really couldn't tell you, I don't know where they fall in the Bontrager line but I've had no problems to date.

I've discovered the tires spec'd by Santa Cruz are totally inadequate for trail riding in Northwestern Ontario. Back home in S.Ontario where the soil is mostly loamy/sandy these light/thin casing tire would be great. However, on the shale covered trails up here these things are getting eaten alive and I've had numerous punctures where I end up pulling a sharp piece of shale from the tire casing. I point out the weakness in these tires because I've been loaning my specialized (with Michelin Wildgripper tires) to a friend of mine and he has yet to flat out from a puncture while following right behind (or infront of) me.

Stickers on a $4,000 (CDA) bike??? Come on Santa Cruz... Would it have killed you to clearcoat these things? It looks like crap after just a few rides and reflects badly on your ability to pay attention to the fit and finish of your bikes. Fix it.

For this much money I expect near perfection in a MTB. Santa Cruz is almost but not quite there. They nailed the big stuff but are lacking on some of the smaller details. Overall though, I'm very happy with this bike, if I could go back and have the option of taking something different, I'd still take the Santa Cruz.

Bottom Line:excellent all around bike for climbing and decending. Any full sus would have improved my riding coming from a hard tail for 10 years, but once this bike trained me to ride it I was hooked and happy!

Ways SC could make it better:
1. seal the weld hole at the base to prevent trail crud from getting inside the frame and rattling around
2. Improve the mud clearance at the seat stays
3. make all pivots accessible with out removing the chainrings
4. move the center of gravity on the bike is forward, to help keep the front tire down on steep climbs without standing - still climbs well standing if the pitch is steep enough.

My only serious complaint - I am looking at a replacing the pivots (which are creaking horribly) after only 600 miles of riding. Not enough to make me trade it in though!

Strengths:Solid and secure handling, suspension performance
Weaknesses:Pivot maint, tad heavy, frame sizing, longish chain stays.
Similar Products Used:Too many to remember.
Bike Setup:XTR/XT, Reba Team, Fox FloatR, Race Face, Easton carbon post/barslight wheels, tires to suit the race/ride, etc. Probably in the 26 pound range.
Bottom Line:I bought the Blur I though it would be a trail bike I could race. Turned out to be a race bike I could trail ride. Won lots of sport races on this thing, and took 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in the three series I raced in last season. Believe me, it aint' the rider - I credit the bike. Solid and stable are words that come to mind. Also very forgiving - I've never owned/ridden a bike that you can hang out on the fringe of disaster, and it seems to have this little reserve of control on tap to let you reel it back in. I can get in way over my head and should crash, but somehow I don't. I ride and race in very rocky, technical terrain, and it works very well in those conditions as long as the suspension is setup on the soft side. I don't like the bike with the 5th Element in those conditions, i.e. big rocks/endless rock gardens ala Michaux State Forest. The 5th behaves unpredictably in the rocks, but on smoother, faster courses the 5th Element works pretty well, though I never feel totally comfortable with it. I just started racing a Scalpel in the Expert class, and while it climbs and accelerates better than the Blur, and handles gnarly stuff surprisingly well, I miss the ability to stay seated and ride through the rough stuff without getting beat up. If only I could have the efficiency of the Scalpel with the overall performance of the Blur...I suspect that the FoxRP3 might allow for that combination of attributes. I love the RP3 on the Scalpel; running in the open position the bike is "almost" plush, and when climbing or fireroading, I engage the firm pro-pedal setting and it climbs/accelerates extremely well while still absorbing some trail impacts and maintaining better traction than full-on lock out. I'm anxious to try the RP3 on the Blur, and if it eliminates the weaknesses I've noticed since racing against much fitter competition (can feel sluggish on steep climbs, squats down under power, etc), I'll buy the new Blur XC. I'm currently riding a large frame despite a height of just under 5'8" cause I have a short torso and long arms/legs. It is just slightly too big and hampers me in really tight stuff and switchbacks, but the medium felt too small with its 22" and change top tube. The trade off is the incredible stability the extra length affords. The new XC version is not only lighter, but has shorter stays and 23-inch top tube, which should make it an excellent race bike. The one huge issue I've encountered in a year and half with the Blur is that the lower pivots collect muck due to their location and design. When the bearings fail, as mine have twice, they can allow the link to sustain wear damage if it happens during a ride or race and you can't replace them immediately. I now have a worn lower link, which allows play and squeaks badly, and I'm waiting for my LBS to warranty it. I've been without the Blur for nearly a month now, and while the Scalpel is a great "smoother course" race bike, I'm getting pretty beat up in the rocks of Michaux State Forest on it. I've heard of ways to protect the lower linkages from the elements, but nothing I've tried has worked. Shame, as it is a real issue for those of us who ride and race in sloppy regions. Still, a fantastic and versatile bike. 4 chilis for value since it is expensive and has reliability issues with the lower linkages, and 4 for overall rating because it is very close to perfect, but not yet. The 05s just might be, though.

Strengths:Its a Santa Cruz. It rides like no other full susp. bike out there. They are in my opinion the best built frame in terms of quality and finish. They dont flex and are built very tough. Climbing just as great as decending with no loss of power thanks to the VPP technology.
Weaknesses:None that I know of

Bottom Line:This bike has been beaten on for over a year and I haven't had a problem yet. The vpp makes it the nicest riding trail bike I have ridden. Untill someone else comes close to the Quality and technology of a Santa Cruz bike I don't think I would ride any other brand.

Strengths:This Review is For Original Blur Not XC or BLT.
Great all around long ride, enduro bike. Best dual suspension I've ever ridden. Out of saddle climbing is very firm (even with my sag length maximum on rear shock) but still is active enough. Long seated climbing, flip Rp3 platform to firm (has three settings)
[Next year Sram/RShox is coming out with MC3 that remote controls and is integrated to Reba's poploc so I will maybe switch to that rear shock.]
Weaknesses:Lower Bearings Squeak after a couple of rides and need attention. Cleaning and packing dope around bearing cartridges.(Can fix by covering with liz skin see below)
Similar Products Used:-Cannondale Raven w Statos XC Pro Remote travel control.
-Specialized Epic (tried)
-Specialized Enduro (tried)
-Intense Spider Vpp (tried all day trail ride)
Tried a new Turner (can't member model), a new Titus(can't remember Model), S.C. Superlight, Trek Fuel, Trek/Fisher Dual.... various other models.
Would have liked to try the Scott Carbon Dual Genius MC Limited but could not find one in states. (Would really like to try a longer travel carbon frame Trek/Fuel type that offers Vpp like suspension) None out there Yet !
Bike Setup:Fork: Reba with Poplock,(infinitely adjustable and affortable front fork) Rear Shock: RP3, Groupo: Xtr 2004 dual control groupo except for normal Xtr for front shifter.
Avid Mechanical Ball Bearing 7" rotor back 6" front. (remember this is cross country not freeride setup)
Xtr 959 shim pedals with mitered cleats for more float)
Lp Composite Grips ergonomic bar ends (turned way forward)
[Can't begin to say how much it protects hands + wrist]
see review: http://www.mtbr.com/reviews/Bar_End/product_17937.shtml)
Easton Carbon Bar with special inserts to support bar ends.
Easton Carbon Seatpost.
Spinery Cyclone Disc Wheels Composite spokes.
Bottom Line:Best dual bike I've ever ridden. The other choice would have been the Epic because of the way it climbed. But, when you hit a bump climbing Epic got really too soft!(No chain tension holding the shock from over-reacting when you are trying to get power (Epic is on or off, not integrated like Chain Reaction Paradigm), like the Vpp on the Blur) Epic as no compairison to the Blur on the downhill! Blur 4" travel feels like more.
Lower Bearings: Thanks to another reviewer I built a lizard skin cover (from 2 fork boot covers) for the bottom bearings. (It is tricky because if you don't completely seal with around the edges of the neoprene [I used duck tape and then covered with electrical tape] dirt gets trapped next to bearings. But, with the cover I was able to eliminate regular lower bearing maint. (Just take off Liz Skin cover to check when feeding and cleaning bike)

Strengths:prestige, no "brake jacking," VPP design really does work as long as you ride it correctly, controlled plushness, very versatile
Weaknesses:steep head tube angle, maintenance nightmare, why can't the play in the pivots go away? flexier than i'd like it to be...
Similar Products Used:lots
Bike Setup:full xt drivetrain, hayes hydraualic discs, 5th element, fox f100, xt/ex721 wheels, 0 degree rise stem with flat bar
Bottom Line:This was my first foray into the world of full suspension. The ride is quite good, in that it doesn't do anything you don't want it to do. Stand up to pedal, no bob. it floats over stuff in a way that allows you to pedal without any interuption - it's great! I would appreciate more stiffness, however i didn't really notice the flex until i got back onto my rigid singlespeed, so it is not really out of the ordinary. This would really be about as good of an all-around trail bike as you can get, BUT....

... the pivots never seem to be tight. I hadn't had the bike 6 months when i had to send it back to santa cruz to warranty the frame, due to perpetual play and creaking in the pivots. they replaced the rear swingarm, pivots internals, and the two rocker arm things, saying that the pivots had been over-bored during fabrication. Kudos to their warranty department for that.

It doesn't creak anymore, however there is still that infernal play in the pivots. extrememly frustrating. all the pivot/suspension bolts have been tightened to the recommended torque settings, but that didn't cure anything. i can still ride it just fine, but when handling the bike, i can feel and hear the rattle. sigh. it is enough to make me not really want to buy another santa cruz, despite the amazing ride quality. i would expect cheesy pivots on a much cheaper bike, but not on a bike at this price level.

of course, this is just my experience.

Strengths:Everything.
Weaknesses:None.
Similar Products Used:Nothing similar. Came from a hardtail
Bike Setup:Full XTR (with the exception of the rear cassette and chain-due to a failure), Fox F100RLT fork, Fox RP3 rear shock. Basically, the kit as sold by Santa Cruz.
Bottom Line:I previously rode a hardtail, and migrating to FS was like a revelation. The combination of VPP and the RP3 shock make for an incredibly supple ride...allowing you to bomb down descents, and make easy work of technical sections. I've also noticed that this bike is 100 times more responsive than my old Giant HT. I can whip that front end around with hardly any effort at all. It only took me a couple of rides to get used to the feel of the Blur. It cost me quite a bit, but I'm a firm believer in "you get what you pay for", and I most certainly got what I paid for.

An outstanding bike that I'm looking forward to riding/racing for quite some time.

Rides much faster and more control... or out of control because you can go very fast without realizing it. The bike feels great. front and rear suspension is amazing. rear shock setup is a breeze. Very plush and smooth out anything that you encounter on the trails. I used to be a weekend warrior but now I am biking everyday and still not enough. Loved it. Went over the handle bar twice on the first two rides due to not used to upright position. Took 4 or 5 rides before getting confortable with the bike. Now, the bike and rider seems to merge as one and will response precisely to whatever inputs you've given it. Outstanding. Recommend to anyone who rides XC and technical single tracks or any where for that mater. New riders should give it time and it'll grow on you. Watchout for the upright position and the low BB.

Strengths:This bike just feels so good climbing. Take this bike as fast as you can on trails like porcupine rim and you'll beg for moore. Doesn't need platform tech., so this bike feels plusher than anything out there in it's catagory.
Weaknesses:Bottom bracket too low. Tire clearance on older frames (newer models this problem has been adressed).

Truevativ stylo team cranks,(light, stiff, and cheap) and eggbeaters. XL ano frame, just under 27 lbs.
Bottom Line:Two years of abuse and no problems what so ever. Nothing I can say that already has not been said. I just love how I can climb tech. sections in the middle ring I would not even think about on my old hard tail. This bike is confidence inspiring.
I have read all neg reveiws and see some common denonomaters. First, bearing and bushing problems seem to occur in wet regions. I have not had to replace or even clean mine, but I do live in a dry state. Common sence would tell you to clean and grease them before they creak. I will clean mine this week. Second, some complain about how the bike feels. I spent the good part of six months to dial in my ride. I felt to upright on Park Cityssteep single track so I lowered my stem. I also felt to forward on steep decents. I changed out my Thompson post to an Easton post which is offset. That alone made a huge difference. The Blur is designed to be shorter and more upright than your run of the mill cross country hardtail. Take time to dial in the fit. Also,if you are on the fence between two sizes, go with the larger frame. Most trail bikesand longer travel bikes have a much slacker head tube angle than the blur. Santa Cruz sizes alittle small, and you will not sacrifice handling with the larger size.
I also read a reveiw about someone who had shock bushing problems, which in turn led to needing a new rear triangle. He also said all his buddies had the same problem and sold their blurs because of their problems. I have never herd of such problems and think that writer is just bent!! My bike and the hundred plus others who wrote in after a year or two are proof that that is very rare and just does not happen under normal circumstances. FS bikes have more moving parts, thus they need more maintenace. Take care of this bike and it will take care of you. For those of you that take care of your bike by cleaning it a the local car wash, you'll never get it.
Props to Santa Cruz, I LOVE this bike!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The bike seems to compinsate for my mistakes, so it lets me ride when I should be falling. Doing 4 feet drop-offs are nothing. My friends think that I'm a little ballzy. Now, I'm looking for 5 and 6 feet drop offs. By the way, I weigh about 160 Lbs, and the bike is set up for a 200 Lbs rider. However, their are some draw backs. This bike feels weird. When I first talked to the factory rep before buying this bike, He told me, "People get scared when they first ride this bike because it feels high. They get scared." Well, he's right. It took me about 3 months to get this bike dialed in and I'm still working on it. I'm going to raise the handle bar by 1 inch. Maybe, this will help to keep my weight back and keep by back from getting soar.

If you have the money buy this bike. It may take a little while to get use to it, but when you do, you will go so fast that your friends will think that your a different rider.

Bike Setup:Factory: Fox Float front and back, XT, panaracers, carbon monkey bars, etc,,.
Bottom Line:I like this bike a lot as an all mountain bike. It rides really nicely, particularly downhill; it's quick and responsive. However, it is NOT the best climber I've ever ridden - maybe I need to set it up or dial it in better, but still it a bit heavy, particularly since I used to the Klein - 23/24Lbs. The blur climbs decently, but it not in the same league as my Adept. It is more comfortable on long rides - again, the rocky downhills are where it makes a real difference. Handling-wise it's good, but the Adept is better, if a bit twitchy on steep docents.

I had expected that this bike would make me want to unload the Klein, but alas, it just makes me appreciate it more. Believe it or not the Blur is my guest bike, while I still ride the Adept, but then again I am more of a cross-country rider.

You should buy this bike if you a serious all mountain rider who is willing to sacrifice a bit of true cross country performance for a very good generalist bike.

Strengths:Light. Climbs well. Tracks well. Plush on the downhill. Quick, precise steering without being twitchy. Bulletproof durability for a trailbike.
Weaknesses:A slightly slacker headtube angle would make it track even better and handle even bigger hits on the downhill. 4.5 inches of travel is on the short end for trail bikes these days. This bike will probably become less popular when the 6-inch-travel version of the Blur is introduced this year.

Bike Setup:Full XTR with integrated shift levers, Marzocchi Marathon S fork, Fox Float-R with AVA sleeve rear shock, Mavic 717 rims
Bottom Line:In the 2 years that I have used this bike, I have never been disappointed with it. I really didn't appreciate how much easier it made both climbing and descending until I went back to using my hardtail Specialized Stumpjumper for a couple rides. While the hardtail was definitely lighter, it did not maintain traction or hold a line as well during technical climbs. I had given the Stumpjumper away as a hand-me-down to my girlfriend so that she could learn to ride. She was always nervous about falling on technical sections and never really enjoyed mountain biking until I let her borrow my Blur. In the course of one ride she began clearing sections that she would have walked in the past and rode faster downhill than she ever had before. She liked the bike so much that she ended up getting one a month later.

The Blur also climbs and descends better than the Jeckyll and Fuel, Superlight and I-drive that I have ridden. It just forgives mistakes better than these other bikes.

I have only had to grease the pivots once in two years of regular riding. This may have something to do with the dry climate that I ride in. I have taken it down 4 foot rock drops without cracking the frame or blowing the suspension, but I only weigh 140 lbs and I'll bet the size small frame that I ride can take more abuse than the medium or large sizes.

Bottom Line:I can't think of a single bike that compares to the Blur--especially for the price range ($3000 to $4500 depending on the setup). If you're getting this bike, make sure you get the Fox RLT100 and 5th Element setup. This is by far the smoothest suspension combination I've ever experienced. Also, you might want to consider a better wheelset. I went with the stock setup, and I've been happy with mine so far, but I know other riders that have upgraded to a better wheelset. Other than the wheelset, the only slight weakness is the low bottom bracket, but I would never tell someone to get a different bike because of it. The pros with this bike outweigh the cons 1 million to 1.

Don't want to beat a dead horse, but this bike really is a climbing/XC machine. It's also just as nice on descents. My heart is starting to race just thinking about it right now. To make a long story short: if you're looking for a bike in the $3000-4500 range, this is the only bike you should get if you're looking for the best XC/Trail bike on the market.

Bike Setup:Fox RLT100, Fifth Element, Hayes Mag, XTR Rear Der, Rest all LX, Mavic Crossmax SL Disc, Thompson post, Monkeylite Carbon Bar, Kenda Kharisma's.
Bottom Line:A lot of stinkin' dough to pay for a mountain bike, but after a year, I definitely think it was worth it. The only thing I miss on the old Sugars was the descending ability with a 120mm fork and rider position further back in the cockpit. That said, the overall abilities of the Blur made me quickly forget who Gary Fisher was. The shock and fork allow you to set and forget them, beyond checking the pressure every couple of rides. Overall build quality of frame is very high - all welds look great. After test riding lots of bikes, the Blur felt comfortable right away. Suspension works as advertised, so I don't feel like a victim of the hype. Snapped one pivot bolt in the first season, but was replaced quickly under warranty. Hopefully, this is a 5 year bike I can keep upgrading.

Strengths:bump absorption, sure-footedness, climbing prowess, descending ability. fun as hell factor.
Weaknesses:on the gruntiest climbs you feel a little power leakage from bob. however, this comes from pedaling squares instead of circles.
Similar Products Used:none really. i have been riding a trek 8500 hardtail.
Bike Setup:it's the santa cruz xtr disc kit. i chose the fox rp3 and the fox 100 rlt.
Bottom Line:look, i only have a few rides under my tires, but WOW!!!! I can't believe how much more fun this bike is than my hardtail. there may be some slight power loss on steep climbs that i'm not fit enough to spin up. the propedal setting on the rp3 does seem to effectively mitigate the bob without losing much of the plush. the normal action of a reasonble pedaling style just doesn't seem to activate the suspension. it's total magic.
After only a few miles this bike has already changed my attitude about how to ride. the same old rules about hardtail trail reading don't apply. just point and shoot.
most every review talks about how well it climbs; it does climb well. every review talks about how well the blur descends; it descends so well i may end up hurting myself. but the thing it does best that you don't read about is that it lets me stay seated in the flat bumpy stuff and keep churning. it flat out motors through all but the gnarliest trail debris. it's almost like cheating.

parts wise, i am surprised about a few things. the kenda nevegal tires are actually great; kinda' porky i would guess, but great. i'm a dyed in the wool python air light guy, but i think i might keep the kenda's for now. the xtr stuff is so much better than the tired lx that i've been using that comparison would be silly. however, i like the dual-control rapid-rise. makes better sense than the old design.

value rating is hard, isn't it? i mean, the thing cost an arm and a leg, but if i keep enjoying the thing isn't that good value? so there it is; i'll say it's a good value if you can afford it.
overall? there aren't enough flaming chilis to describe my feelings so far.

Weaknesses:Low bottom bracket height, noticeable feel when chain tension is high, lots of pivots = can be a little squeaky if not kept clean
Similar Products Used:First VPP bike but have owned many high end rigs.

Bottom Line:Great all around bike and an excellent value when you compare SC's workmanship, technology and customer service to other high end frame builders. I also have a Heckler with Fifth Element coil and Sherman Firefly up front. I spend more time on my Heckler than the Blur. Used the Blur in a couple of races last year and it has held up well. Strengths:Solid, light weight, efficient. Handles like a sports car. Climbs like a goat and lots of travel. 5th element is plush and fox fork F100 RLT is the best I have ridden.
Weaknesses:I really can not think of any. That is if you change the crappy tires that the bike comes with. The Kenda's are not stout enough for the bike.
Similar Products Used:I tried them all before I bought the Blur. Intense, Kona, Dean, KHS. Also Manitou, Rockshox, Marzocchi.

Bottom Line:I wasn't sure how much this bike would help and improve my riding. I was pretty comfortable with my skills before this bike came along but as soon as I got it on the trail I realized how much more there was to riding. Speed, handling and every aspect of the trail changed for me. The cockpit fit perfectly and the susp. was right on with some fine tuning. Friends were like "what happened to you man." They are now in the market for new bikes, and everyone was riding bikes only 1-2 years old. My first ride was an experience however. The Kenda tires completely fell apart. With close to 50psi (I weigh 175lbs) these tires had more holes in them from pinch flats than I had patches (too much pounding when landing). By the time I came to a stop both tires were flat w/ approx'ly 5-7 holes per tire. I switch to the Stan's tubeless and Conti's without one problem since. I have yet to bottom out this bike and can keep the downhillers in clear site while bombing downhill. I thought I would have to settle with about 2-4 feet of air while screeming downhill on my last bike (won't mention the brand but it was a high end titanium hardtail), now I'm not sure what the limit will be. So, who should buy it? Anyone who wants to open up a whole new world of mtnbiking. Who shouldn't? Anyone that can beat everyone uphill with their existing bike and can go down just about any trail as fast as someone on a bike with >6in of travel. Don't get me wrong this is not a downhiller. The headtube angle is not slack enough for high speed drops but it will change your outlook. I am now looking at the VPfree and V10 thanks to the Blur.

Strengths:I made an earlier post after a week of riding this thing. My opinion has done a complete 180. I lowered the stem, got rid of the too wide and too high bars, and now she handles like a sports car instead of an SUV. I have come to love my Blurrie…She is relatively light (mine is right at 25.3lbs according to LBS scale), amazingly stable (if I mess up and don’t pick the best line she just laughs at me and plows ahead…) and is awesome on climbs as long as I stay in the saddle (Fizik Gobi saddle rocks…) Pedal bob is only slightly noticeable in the small chainring, middle and big feel like a hardtail.
Weaknesses:I haven’t had any maintenance problems that seem to be described in every third or so post. A buddy of mine has the XT packaged Blur and has also had zero problems. I do make a point of checking the torque on all pivot points every five rides (the XTR cranks disassemble in seconds making it easy to get to the lower pivots) and I give her a thorough cleaning after every ride. (Never did this with my XTR equipped hardtail but all the blow - up postings have me paranoid). Only other SC related downside would be the increased weight…My HT weights just over 22lbs. The added weight starts to become noticeable when riding up Mt. Rainer…One thing I should point out is that it would be great if Fox made a remote lockout… During sprints and short middle or big chainring bursts it is not easy to reach down and flip the lockout. Other than that the front shock is amazing…

Bottom Line:This bike KICKS BUTT!!!

I really like this bike. I have ridden it for two years now. It is a blast to ride. It climbs great, and on the downhills it works awesome. I have put alot of miles on this bike. I have had some problems with it though. The frame cracked on me and the link broke. When it comes to the link breaking, I feel if you have a bike with all these pivot points something is bound to break. Well atleast when your 220 pounds like I am. Santa Cruz replaced it and haven't had a problem with it since. The frame cracked on the seat tube just above the bottom bracket. I don't think that should of happened but they gave me a new frame. So I was only out of a bike for about a month.

With all that in mind, I would still buy this bike. It performs and performs. This bike is well worth the money. If you are thinking about buying one, go for it you won't regret it.

I would give the bike an overall of 5 chilis if I didn't have the frame crack. So a 4 is what it will get overall.

Dear Santa Cruz,

I have been riding mountain bikes since 1983. I have had a Ross Mt. Whitney, Bridgestone MB-0, and an Independent Fabrication Deluxe. I recently bought a Blur and I love how sweet a ride it provides. I have some feedback I would like to share with you.

1. It would be nice if the brake bosses on the rear triangle were optional. If you know you will always use hydraulic brakes the brake bosses are ugly and add weight. Can they be cut and filed off without voiding the warranty?

2. The derailleur cable should run down along the fifth element shock just like the brake line. The derailleur hanger would be better at about 3 inches from the front derailleur on the seat tube. The hanger should be slightly skewed for a smooth wire transition.

3. The hydraulic brake line hanger should be on the inside of mounting block. Cosmetically it is better and the cable is also out of the way when mounted inside the block.

4. My integrated bike package came with a non sealed $20 headset!? Sealed headsets can be bought for $40. A $3000 bike should not come with such a cheap headset. You guys have more class than this!

5. One pivot bolt can only be accessed by removing the chain rings. Could you make this bolt access easier? Can the bolt be locked stationary on the chain ring side? It could become a safety hazard for someone doing their own maintenance and neglecting this bolt.

Once these items are addressed the bike will be rated five stars. At the moment I can only say it is 4.7 stars. I hope you consider the suggestions and I would love to hear back from you.

SANTA CRUZ NEVER RESPONDED TO MY LETTER.

Strengths:Great climber and plush descender (when it's not being warrantied over and over..) This bike really does work as well as everyone claims.. but theres a catch.
Weaknesses:(FYI.. this is a follow up to an earlier review I wrote about 4 or 5 months ago) When I first got this frame about 5 months ago, the frame had a loud "pop" that would surface at the end of every sustained climb when the suspension compressed for the first time after climbing. Being an experienced bike mechanic with over 10 years of wrenching experience, I was able to identify that it was an issue witht the frame. I ended up having to send the frame back to Santa Cruz 4 times withing the first few months of owning it, only to have the problem surface again and again. Santa Cruz eventually warrantied the frame and sent me a new frame after they could not find the problem after several attempts, but after 4 months on the new warrantied frame the pop has surfaced again. I'm not talking about a normal wear and tear creak or drive train noise here.. this is a loud pop that everyone around me can hear.

I am just your average rider who puts about 4 or 5 hours of normal XC use on this frame every week, and this frame just does not hold up.

Santa Cruz did try very hard to find the problem and they did eventually replace my first frame so they do stand behind their product, but now that frame #2 has the same problem, I'm back to square one... not something you would expect from a $1500 frame.
Bike Setup:2004 XT shifters and drive, Fox float 100 RLT, hayes hydraulics
Bottom Line:Great bike when it works (quite possibly the best out there), but I have never come across a frame with more problems. As a bike mechanic for over 10 years who was responsible for all warranties from 3 bike shops, I have never had to send a bike back for warranty so many times. I could have written this off to just bad luck since my first frame had problems over and over, but frame number 2 (which is a 2005 model instead of the original 2004 frame that had issues) has developed the same problem. Very disapointing for a frame that costs $1500.00. 2 flaming chili due to the warranty problems, 3 chilis overall because when it works, it is fantastic.

Absolutely brilliant flying around rough singletrack - the faster you go the more fun you have !

I am riding the 5th element at a lowish IFP pressure - the VPP system stops any bobbing. The 5th element can be tuned for any type of riding - low IFP for fun and high IFP for long distance TransAlp type riding.
The "trapdoor" effect of the rear suspension eating up everything is true - I'm sure the frames got around 6" rear travel !
Bottom line ? Brilliant - it's going to take something very special to beat the Blur.

Bottom Line:I am not sure why I was surprised but this bike turned out to be all that I had hoped for having read all the other reviews.

Bobbing - barely noticable compared to Stumpjumper (even with propedal). What I can't understand is even when I locked out the shock on the stumpy, the Blur still feels like I have a third leg and hammers up fireroad climbs that used to kill me on the stumpjumper

Small bump sensitivity - with the 5th element you can still feel the trail underneath you in that pleasing way that make you a mountain biker and not a roadie, a feeling a quite missed having gone from a hardtail to the FSR stumpjumper, but as soon as you hit anything bigger than a small fist sized stone the Blur just swallows it whole.

Big Hits - the blur does really does just swallow the big hits whole. I took the bike down a flight of 10 or so log steps yesterday where I would usually have had my arse off the saddle but with my bum on the saddle I could barely feel them. When you hit a big root you feel it with the front forks and then it seems to disappear when the back wheel hits it. You find yourself looking back to see if you had somehow missing it with the back.

Overall geometry - I needed an extra large stumpjumper with an inline seatpost but fit fine on the large Blur with the Thompson layback seatpost. As the wheelbase is shorter you really feel like you can chuch it around on the singletrack and the back end feels very solid.

I don't know how Santa Cruz have done it but this really is the best bike that money can buy bar none. I have tried to explain to people how the VPP works but have given up now.

I am giving it 5 chillis for value even because this bike is so good I think it is worth every penny compared to some of the mediocre bike out there that cost a little less but are only half as good.

If you are a keen cross country rider looking for the ultimate bike than you really need look no further, this is the ultimate bike

Strengths:Balance, VPP (minimal bobbing), Anodized Finish, Acceleration through rock gardens
Weaknesses:Small hole in chain stay brace - allows sand and small rocks in (easily fixed with piece of tape).
Similar Products Used:GT Idrive, NRS1
Bike Setup:5th Element, Crossmax SL, tubeless Larsen TT, XT/XTR (planning to move to SRAM), MAXM riser, Fox Forx RLT100
Bottom Line:Very balanced handling bike. Rider position very comfortable and allows great handling. Have done a number of 6hour plus rides/races and the Blur helps to ease rider fatigue.
Climbing/descending ability of the Blur is only limited by rider skill. Have never felt that I have pushed the extremes of the Blur's abilities.
5th Element is good - although I have the IFP (stable platform adjustment) set to the absolute minimum as the VPP is good enough to minimise bobbing.
The Fox RLT100 is new (within last month) and seems to compliment the plusness of the Blur nicely.
If this bike hasn't made me faster, it certainly makes me feel more stable and secure at speed.

Purchased At:richardsbicycles.com – thanks to Mike Richard and his staffs for this nice bike
Strengths:Great Control – lots of forgiveness for mistakes I make, awesome suspensions and simple & strong parts – less maintenance
Weaknesses:Not much I can see;
Minor comment: 5th Element can have better notes for it’s psi.
I haven’t found much problem about low-clearance pedal issue yet.
Similar Products Used:This Blur is my first FS; pervious bike was Trek8000
Bike Setup:Fox Float 100 RL, 5th Element, Shimano Deore XT Hydraulic Disc, Shimano XT Dual Control break levers, Anodized
Bottom Line:I have been riding this bike for a month and I already put 300 miles on her. I have family and work so 300 miles a month means I ride “every/any” chance I have. I love this nice bike.

I don’t have previous FS experience so I can’t compare with other FS bikes, like apple to apple.

For the first several rides I wasn’t sure this is the best FS for me; it felt heavy and slow on up-hills. My expectation for climb performance was high because of that the reputation Blur (VPP) has.
But now, after adjusting every stuffs and myself, I could go on up-hills with as same speed as I did with Trek8000 which was HT and very light.

On down-hills this is great!!!
The heaviness feeling (I don’t think Blur is a heavy bike) provides me nice comfortable feeling and control. I am being surprised that how smooth, especially by 5th Element, the feeling is while going down on rugged trails on Annadale.
I am slow on down-hills (not many friends are slower than me on down-hills) but I can “feel” that I am building up speed on down-hills each time I ride this new bike.

Bottom Line:I have been riding this bike for 5 months and it is still amazes me when I ride. The bike is most impressive over rocks and roots. My hands and legs don't get sore from the constant rough terrain. The XT integrated brake/shifters rock. I was a bit apprehensive the first few rides. I would recommend the rapid rise XTR derailleur to match the shifter operation. Shimano should offer a rapid rise XT derailleur.
Go for the anodize finish and 5th element. The extra $$ is worth it. The finish will take quite a beating.
I also have a riser bar and spacers with a flat stem. I like th upright riding position.
Great bike for intermediate to expert cross country riders. I have no regrets with the purchase.

Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month

Purchased At:LBS - Old Town Bikes in Tacoma, WA
Strengths:No discernable pedal bob, climbs better than my 22lb hardtail, MADE IN USA (does anyone know who is doing the welding for SC, I have heard Anodizing inc. in Portland?), Exclusivity (PUSS) factor… Only took two weeks to get which seems reasonable for a bike of this caliber, If you do the math the SC XTR build kit is a pretty good deal
Weaknesses:Heavy for what I bought it for which is fast XC riding / Day long epic XC excursions… Jury’s still out on the XTR dual control levers, Lacks the quick handling and sharpness of my HT but I also don’t feel that I have the position 100% dialed…If my wife ever finds out what I paid for it...The stock Kenda Tires suck in the mud, and mud is what I will be riding in for the next 6mo
Similar Products Used:OLD Cannondale Super V 2000 (sold it after a month and went back to HT)
Bike Setup:L Citrus Anno frame w/ SC XTR build kit (look it up on their website if you give a crud) Fox Float 100RLT up front, Fox Float R in the rear (all the horror stories about the 5th element scared me away), Eggbeater pedals (these rock)
Bottom Line:Before I get into this I want to preface by stating that I am a hard core XC rider that has little interest in free riding or downhilling. Don’t mistake this for a lack of respect for those aspects of the sport, it simply doesn’t float my boat. (If your gonna ride down it, you should have to ride up it, but to each his own)

The guys at my LBS thought I was nuts when the first thing out of my mouth was ‘its heavy.’ If their scale is accurate mine weighs in at 25lbs on the nose. The custom built C’dale HT I have been riding for the past 5 years weighs just over 22lbs and is bullet proof. 3 lbs is a lot to a XC weight weenie such as myself. Is it worth it for FS? Jury is still out on this one…

I am still doinking with the ride position, but it seems like SC wants one to sit in a more upright position than I am used to. I have been riding in the ‘joe racer’ type crouch for most of the 15 yrs I have been riding mtb so maybe I need to give it more time? I think I will find a happy medium with a few more rides and more doinking (yes, this is a technical term)

Everyone says that with time the XTR dual control levers will win you over. Again, I have been riding Rapid Fire XTR’s for the past 5 years so I may fall into the ‘old dog, new trick category’. I am warming up to them. The XTR discs have awesome stopping power but howl like a wet dog left outside all day when they come into contact with moisture. Will this go away after break – in? Also, the modulation doesn’t seem as good as the rim brake Magura hydraulics I am used to.

Overall I don’t think I have had it long enough to give a biased opinion. You see reviews from guys that have had it less than a month stating it is the best ride they have ever owned. This is not one of those reviews. Besides, who in their right mind would pay $4200 bucks for a bike and not give it rave reviews? I like my Blurrie, and I think I will come to love her. (I’ll post again in 6mo) I may end up racing the HT on all but the roughest courses, but for me, those truly memorable rides have nothing to do with racing…

Who should buy it? Anyone looking for a fast XC machine that will keep you fresh on all day rides...

Who shouldnt? The XC weight weenine looking for a HT like ride in a FS bike (yikes, that's me, but the Blur has me 90% won over!)

Strengths:Endless rear-suspension travel as long as your not pedaling
Weaknesses:VPP is not perfect. Bearing failures. Read "The Bottom Line".
Similar Products Used:Turner Burner, Stinger, Fuel 100, now own Racer-X 100 (for XC, Trail, Marathon a much better bike than the Blur)
Bike Setup:Full XTR Disc, Fox Float 100 RLC, Fox AVR
Bottom Line:I bought a Blur 18 months ago based on the magazine recommendations. VPP is a bandaid solution that has a number of drawbacks -- stiffens too much on technical climbs (lose traction), stiffens under braking with some brake-jacking. The worst thing on the Blur was 4 sets of broken pivot bearings near the bottom bracket -- XC, Marathon use only, no big hits.

The VPP design isn't necessary with SPV shocks coming onto the market a year ago. Fully active suspension with a shorter chainstay is much better in virtually all conditions.

Strengths:5th element and fox float 100 work so well together on the descents and this bike climbs better than my old hardtail. The VPP works to a tee, just like Santa Cruz says it will. I cant believe how smooth it is.

The price was great considering the amount you'd spend on an intense or turner.
Weaknesses:some ghost shifting issues. At this point, Im going to go with the idea that the rear derail. is improperly adjusted and the ghost shifting isnt due to the rear triangle travel.
Similar Products Used:giant, cannondale, gt
Bike Setup:xl ano orange frame
xt hydraulics, cassette, hubs
truvativ stylo cranks, gigapipe sl bb
mavic 223 rims, hutchison scorpions
Bottom Line:I am amazed at how well this bike performs. Im a big guy and I heard all the "big guys shouldnt ride a blur" whooplah or "it's too noodly" business and Im here to tell you that Im experiencing non of that.

This is one hot ride on the descents. I had a hard time with my Cannondale hardtail being twitchy and harsh when going down; not the case here. The suspension takes the big hits and damps out all the little stuff while still allowing you to feel the trail underneath you. It's incredible to point this baby down and not have to worry about modulating your speed.

The bike climbs incredibly. I didnt think that would actually be the case but it really does. The coolest thing is that you can stay in your saddle alot more and really grind out those long ascents without having to worry about every little line youre going to have to take to keep good traction. While I know my hardtail theoretically should climb better, in reality Im finding that I can clean longer, more technical sections than I ever could on my hardtail.

The only gripe I have is with the ghost shifting and I really dont think that's due to any inherent frame or travel problem. I think it's a tuning issue so I cant really take points away for that.

Is the blur a race bike? Probably not. What it is is the most awesome trail bike Ive ever ridden. It's fun, so much more fun than any other bike Ive ever ridden, and Im very happy with my purchase.

Oh, one more thing. If youre going to buy a bike over the internet (or at all for that matter) I highly recommend richards bicycles. Mike Richards is a hell of a guy and will treat you like youre the only person on the planet. He really cares about his clientele and is committed to service before, during and after the sale. I cant say enough about this outfit; they really did me right.

Similar Products Used:Sugar, Mantra, Parkpre hardtail, Klein palamino
Bike Setup:XTR disk, thompson seat post, WTB laser saddle, Fox terralogic F100x fork. Time pedals
Bottom Line:This is the best riding mtb I have ever owned. It has made me a better rider, faster and able to clear technical sections without dabbing. The handling is spot on, it carves singletrack with ease and bombs downhills. I have had no otb problems with this bike, went otb more often on the Sugar. The VPP does what it says, hammer and it doesnt move. Like all designs that relay on chain tension it will bob if you are pedaling lightly, the fifth element takes care of that when set up properly. This may not be the best bike ever (havent riden ellsworth, maverick, rocky mountain), but I cant imagine any of them riding better. I bought the bike based on the hype and am glad I did. The only issue I have with the bike is the low bb. It does hit a lot of rocks but I have gotten used to it. Thanks to James at S and W for taking great care of me and the Blur.
This bike has the ideal travel and geometry for the rocky rooty single track so common to New England.

Strengths:Climbs like an old steel hardtail without the frame/crank flex. The frame geometry is very comfortable, my back appreciates it. Suspension smoothes out the ride when decending and you really don't feel it working which is a good thing. Ultimate XC bike

Strengths:VPP does have an advantage. Seems to be well built and sturdy.
Weaknesses:Only one dealer allowed in each city it seems.
Similar Products Used:Trek, Sugar, Jekyll
Bike Setup:All XT but cranks, Duke fork, hayes brakes, some carbon fiber stuff.
Bottom Line:Just bought this bike and so far I'm liking it. I had shopped around for quite some time trying out several bikes within the price range of the Blur. I'm a 5'6" rider about 150 lbs so the small frame (with 175mm cranks) actually felt better to me. Very hard to find a dealer with this size frame in any brand. I wanted a bike that I could ride any type of terrain, and this felt like it was it.
Here's the bottom line. This bike does feel great. When I apply power to the pedals, it moves. Trails out here in Houston are very rooty. We don't have a lot of climbs but plenty of ruts. The Blur coast through them and climbs back out with little effort. Cross country riding is what I do most, so I'm not sure what kind of drops the frame can handle. That aside, I find the performance amazing. The Blur is very comfortable and I find myself pedaling in larger chain rings. There is virtually no "bouncing" when I ride on the road. The back end "feels" light so, some it seems as though I can climb better. The bike also corners very well, it seems easier to whip it around switch backs.
The price is very hard to swallow, and finding a dealer is even worse. Had to travel to another city to find a dealer that actually stocked some bikes that I could test ride. I wanted to make sure that the bike is worth the money since I am tired of buying a new bike every year. I figured with the money I spend every year, why not just buy one great bike and hold onto it. The good thing is that as time comes, I'll be able to upgrade parts without having trouble like I do with my Cannondale.
Anyway, I'll post another one down the road to update on how the bike holds up long term.

Strengths:The blur really does ride as good as people claim. I have had a lot of bikes and this is by far the best frame I have ever owned. It tracks well, absorbs normal sized bumps and hits well and climbs better than any full suspension bike I have ever owned. It is a very expensive frame but it really is worth the cost. A lot of people claim that this bike makes you a better rider… I don’t know about that but it rides so well it gives you more confidence as a rider and that what many may interpret as making you a better rider. If your are looking for a great XC bike, you have found it, but if your looking for a light race bike, or big hit/big drop bike look elsewhere.
Weaknesses:Although the bike is as sweet as they come, there are a few issues. The first issue is the holes in the end of the stays and the hole in the yoke at the front of the rear triangle. These holes really are dirt and pebble magnets (I can confirm this first hand… argggg! ) and Santa Cruz has no excuse for providing buyers with small plugs. (I was able to find some small plastic plugs at a local home improvement store for less than $2.00) I understand that the holes need to be there to vent heat during welding, but there is no reason for them to remain open. Another issue is the lack of rear tire clearance. If you run a tire bigger than 2.1 you have almost not clearance at all. (FYI.. this issue has been resolved on late 2004/2005 bikes..) One more item of nuisance is the low bottom bracket clearance. This is an issue if you like to ride over very rocky terrain or high roots.
Bike Setup:Fox float 100 RLT - Full XT group - Hayes hydraulics
Bottom Line:Overall this bike is incredible, even with the issues noted above. There is no perfect frame out there, but this is as close as it gets boys and girls ! It climbs as well as any full suspension bike out there and it is so plush it will blow your mind. I highly recommend going with the 5th element shock because the stable platform valving just enhances the frames ability to climb well, and still provide buttery smooth travel. As many others have stated it does take quite a few rides to get the pressures right, but if you are a picky rider and want to be able to dial in your suspension, its’ really the way to go. Another big plus is the warranty service you can expect. I had the misfortune of having to send my frame back 3 times within the first few months due to a nagging hard to find flaw, but both Santa Cruz and Progressive Suspension did a fantastic job resolving my problem. I used to work for a chain of bike shops where I used to be in charge of warranties and get great response from bike manufacturers but both Santa Cruz and Progressive treated me just as well as a joe-blow consumer. (Thanks again Willie and Johnny ! ) 4 chilies for value (because this puppy is pretty spendy), and 5 for overall because this frame is so sweeeeeeet ! If your hesitating to buy this frame due to the price.. don't hesitate - bust out the plastic you won't regret it.

Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $2500.00
Purchased At:Hornet Sporting Goods
Strengths:Stiff when terrain is smooth and super plush when terrain gets rough. It's like having a bike with an automatic terrain sensor, no need for manual lock-outs or SPV spec'd rear shock. Power transfer is never wasted, each pedal stroke is put to efficient use yet suspension is always active to your terrain without any delay.
Used it on a hill climb XC race recently that started from paved road and ended into a dirt road, the bike was efficient all the way, wished I was in better shape though.
On dirt rides, the geometry and handling is so dialed in for fast and technical descents it really inspires confidence that even the drops that used to scare you will become more fun than intimadating. SC really knows how to spec'd their bikes with their build kits, get one and you won't be needing upgrades for awhile.
Weaknesses:The pivots in the chainstay is a dirt/pebble magnet. I use Lizard Skins headset protector to cover the pivot and prevent dirt/sand/pebbles from collecting down there and getting trapped. Stickers on PowderCoat frames are easily scratched. So far no problems with creaky pivots and worn DU bushings with Fox Float rear, even on muddy and wet rides. Wished I didn't have to wait 3-4 months for it. Can be a high maintenance bike to own, the lower pivots can really accumulate dirt and crud on wet and muddy rides. Wished it didn't rain too much so I can go ride. Wished my bike shop accepts food stamps for future purchases...
Similar Products Used:Giant NRS, Trek Fuel 95, Intense Spider XVP (great bike/too $$$$), 2004 Specialized FSR Stumpy.
Bike Setup:SPX Disc integrated, all XT guts, Fox Float R rear shock/Fox Fork. King headset, CrossMax XL wheels, and lotsa lube...
Bottom Line:After riding around in a single pivot bike and grew tired of manually flipping the lockout lever in the rear shock, I decided to get a more efficient bike. This bike is awesome, it simply works without having to rely on a stable platform shock or lockout. Downhills are really fun with the suspension just soaking up all the hits and ruts. The geometry for me is spot-on and for the money, the components on the build kits are a great deal. Could've have gone with a 4-bar design, but I like to stand and some of the technical climbs and the VPP allows you to do just that without being robbed of power. Stomp on the pedals from a standing point and the power transfer instantly propels you forward like a hardtail, now that's something I couldn't do on my single-pivot bike or a 4-bar design frame. Brake jack? I came from a single-pivot bike and I know brake jack, I don't notice it on the Blur. Get this bike and you wish for endless and endless of singletracks..

Bottom Line:I am writing here as I there is no place to review a 2005 bike.
Having just gotten back from my first ride at Mt. Tam - Eldrige Trail - I must say that my Blur was definitely up to the task! Although I got my butt kicked on the ascend, the pain and effort was well worth the fun and excitement of the descend!
After years of not riding and after months of reading all the reviews of many different bikes (thanks to all who write) I decided on the Blur. I purchased my bike at Vision Cyclery SF and thank Charlie and Ray for the excellent setup, great service and sharing their years of experience! John, you were right about these guys! I will be a customer as long as their doors are open.

Because this is a recent purchase I cannot post with absolute or thorough technical information. I can say that in my past I have logged many miles dirt/street so I can say that the many attributes of this bike that many have spoken of in prior posts are true! Suspension and geometry are confidence inspiring. Although I struggled in my first attempt at going up (no fault of the Blur), I was happy to find that I am still fairly decent on on the way down. The bike tracked very well whether in the rocky sections or the fireroads. The bike did so well, that I was stoked when I found that I had a max. speed of 30mph after I thought I was riding very conservatively!

I can also say that should you decide to purchase a Blur, you will not be disappointed. This bike has revived my desire to ride daily and is worth every dollar!
I will re-post in the future with more technical input after the honeymoon is over. But for now, you can find me riding my Blur after work and on the weekends!
