Favorite Trail:a
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $1500.00
Purchased At:Sports Garage, Bould
Strengths:ok bike initially
Weaknesses:Noisy frame, always had some clicking and creaking. Eventually, after 3 years of use (a few tumbles, but no hard crashes and no other abuse), the frame just fell apart: Chainstay broke at the weld while going UPHILL! No response from Jamis (dealer would look at it, but shipping to Colorado wasn't worth it).
Similar Products Used:Trek Fuel EX8, a few hardtails
Bike Setup:Replaced derailleurs
Bottom Line:Stay away from Jamis, sloppy manufacturing, no support

Favorite Trail:Dirt 10
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $500.00
Purchased At:online dealer
Strengths:Relatively light - good value for frame with Fox RP3. Plush ride with a Fox F100 up front.
Weaknesses:The frame was always quite noisy - lots of clicking. Already had to replace whole set of rear triangle bearings. My LBS noticed that the rear triangle was off by a few mm and had to add spacers to prevent binding and keep the bearings from imploding again. Last week, the aluminum chainstay broke completely - not even at a weld! I only weigh 165 and don't do any drops, but the frame has crapped out on me in less than a year.
Bike Setup:Fox F100, xtr/xt derailleurs, crossmax xl's
Bottom Line:Not had much luck with this frame. Already spent a quarter of the price paid for repairs and thats without yet purchasing the rear triangle lower. Don't plan on getting too many endurance races out of this one.

Strengths:Light, durable, comfortable, and most of all very affordable compared to equivalent competition.
Weaknesses:Fox Float RL AVA, that came on bike is NFG. Not sure if I should blame it on the geometry of the Dakar or the shock. But either way, it bobs every pedal and sucks up any of my engery that it can on the flats and hills.

Favorite Trail:North East Trail
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $1000.00
Purchased At:Craigslist
Strengths:Lightweight, quality suspension, quality components, inexpensive
Weaknesses:The wheelset is garbage. The saddle is kinda lame too.
Bike Setup:The bike comes stock with a very good component set except for the wheelset. I changed out the wheelset for Mavic CrossRide. Then I converted the tires to tubeless. The hutchinson tires are garbage. Got IRC Mythos UST.
Bottom Line:I really wanted a Yeti 575 and looked high and low for one on ebay and Craigslist. Unfortunately the 575 is pricey even when you are looking at the used market. That being said, I decided to try to find the next best thing that fit my budget. I got really lucky and found a brand new (never been ridden) Dakar XC Expert for a measley 1,000. I quickly acted on it and have not regretted the purchase ever since. I have ridden it 20 times or so in the past 3 months. This bike is well worth the money. It is a fast XC bike. My setup weighs just over 27 pounds. This is a XC bike. If you are looking for a All Mountain or Freeride, you probably want to look at something with more travel.

Favorite Trail:Cooper's rock
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $1500.00
Purchased At:Ambridge Bike Shop
Strengths:Fox Float suspension eats everything thrown at it. Trigger shifters are lightning fast and super smooth. Carbon fiber rear fork-added bonus. This machine is very very light, durable, and incredibly responive. Hell ya.
Weaknesses:Stock tires slip on extreme verticals but otherwise have great XC qualities.
Similar Products Used:GT i-drive 4.0 5, Mongoose Comp.
Bike Setup:Easton bars, Kinesium frame, Carbon rear fork, Fox float front and rear suspenion, Crank Bro's candy pedals, Juicy 5 hydro disks.
Bottom Line:This bike is sick. It goes anywhere and eats anything the trail throws at it. It should be a $3000 dollar bike but the price is unbelievable and a total steal. This bike isnt for the weekend explorer on flat mulched trails; buy it if you plan on blazing balls out on some serious dirt. Could'nt be happier with this machine.

Strengths:everything! the front and rear suspension rock, adjust the sag and go. Can't beat the price and the components that Jamis has put on a bike at this price, amazing!
Weaknesses:Really none so far, rear brake is making noise but I think cleaning the rotor and pads should take care of it.
Similar Products Used:GT,Yeti.

Bike Setup:I had a lighter set of wheels installed, time pedals and cyclo/HR computer. Like I said above great parts spec'd on this bike.
Bottom Line:What a solid bike and great price.
This is the second Jamis that I have owned and I bought the second one for the same reason I bought this one, PRICE!!! I did my home work and this was by far the best deal out there, if you are looking for a FS, well spec'd and at a good price look for a new 06. Guys I ride with have more expensive bikes and after riding the EXPERT can't believe the ride. Rides like a Caddy and handles like a Vette!

Strengths:Lots of greta components out of the box. Strong design and quality welds.
Weaknesses:To much money for a bicycle!
Similar Products Used:Gary Fisher, Specialized
Bike Setup:Stock out of the box except for a wider front tire.
Bottom Line:After being away from Mt Bikes for 12 years I went bike shopping. Looked at a lot of bikes, wanted to keep it under a grand, saw a lot of nice hardtails in that price point. The salesman showed me this 05 leftover in a 19" frame and I loved the way it looked and rode. Ok the hell with eating for a week, I sprang for the FS bike. Strengths:Great components for the price. nice colours.
Weaknesses:Bulldog tires had to go. Bike is a bit heavy--but the ride makes up for that.

Bottom Line:I love this bike. I raced this for the O-Cup Season and it felt great. It is point and shoot, and climbs flawlessly. I added better tires, crossmax wheelset, and replaced the fork cartidge with the Fox FX. I will and carbon seat post, stem and bars to finish the job. This is the best bang for the buck. You can race it right out of the box. 5 chillis for value. 4 chilli's overall due to weight and crappy tires.

Strengths:Frame, components, weight, reliability, price, xc race ready out of box.
Weaknesses:Switched out the dual control levers with rapid fire and regular brake levers. Personal preference. I may swap out the seatpost later.

Bottom Line:I have had several Jamis bicycles and have found them to be well built with good quality frames and components for less than the well know brand competitors. The 2005 Dakar Expert is no exception and is the 20th anniversary edition in solid red which is very sexy. Let's face it, the components are probably as much or more important that the frame. The Fox float AVA shock and Fox FRL fork with lock out are about as good as they get. Go buy one and get out there and ride!

Purchased At:Melbourne Bicycle Centre
Strengths:Fantastic parts list for the price. Stiff responsive frame. Strong. Excellent build quality. Trick carbon fibre seat stays. Understated good looks.
Weaknesses:Not a fan of the Hutchison Bulldog Airlite tyres. They are unsuited to loose over hardpack conditions, though apparently work well in the mud.
Similar Products Used:Specialized Stumpjumper/Epic, Giant NRS, Gary Fisher (hardtail)
Bike Setup:Stock 2005 XC Expert. ie. XT mechs, XT hubs, Mavic 317 rims, LX hydro discs, Fox F100RL fork, Fox Float R shock. Sweet.
Bottom Line:This bike is an absolute rocket. It flies up hills like my old Gary Fisher, with no hint of flex from the rear triangle. Steering is very responsive as you would expect on an XC race bike, yet still manages to be surprisingly forgiving. The Fox suspension is nicely tunable, and with a little time spent setting it up, the Jamis handles beautifully. It feels like it has much more travel than the nominal 90mm claimed, and is nicely balanced front to rear.

The build is excellent. All the parts seem to have been chosen with an eye to long term performance. Even after nearly 12 months of offroad use, the bike feels like new. The Shimano LX hydros have great feel and power - I think they're even better than the 8" Hayes on my freeride bike. The gears still shift sweetly and the wheels are true.

Stock, mine weighs 13kg exactly which is lighter than my partners hardtail.

In summary, if you're after a fast, relatively light yet surprisingly robust trail cum XC race bike, you'd be hard pressed to find a better built bike than the Jamis. Try it - you'll love it.

Favorite Trail:The one underneath my tires
Duration Product Used:6 months
Purchased At:Biketopia
Strengths:This is a 2005. Tracks well, strong frame and excellent stock component setup. Fast ascents inspired by lockout helps alot. Very little bob when spinning. Completely at home during Pennsylvania Jumps/drops/log hops/off camber roots and twisy technical singletrack. Jamis did their homework on this bike.
Weaknesses:Cable routing caused premature paint chipping (but it is a mountain bike, right?) And slow, technical ascents tend to make the front end twitchy due to head tube angle.
Similar Products Used:This is my first FS bike but really feels like a hardtail in many (positive) ways.
Bike Setup:Pretty much stock with Fox FRL 100 and RP3 shock, Trailblaster tires, Avids, Gripshift, SRAM der. and flat bar. Also running high compression in shock and fork during races (95% of my weight with damping wide open).
Bottom Line:Very good trail bike that craves Sunday races. Completely comfortable bombing down loose stuff and responds to tight cornering. Haven't seen or heard of a better ride at this price point. You won't be disappointed.

Strengths:Comfortable setup. Nice componenets. Great front shock. overall asthetics are nice. Felt like I was getting a lot a bike for the price. I have alwyas used SPD clipless, but these foreign look cliplesses are nice. They seem to release better.
Weaknesses:Tires seem a little sloppy. The front seems to drift. Seems like I am not using all of the rings on the rear cassette because on shifting difficulty. THere are a couple of gears that the bike does not like. THe seat simply sucks. My cheapo 50 seat from performance is way better (but it looks good). THe whole all in one brake and shifter is a little bulky, but immaterial.
Similar Products Used:Specialized XC with XT.
Bike Setup:Stock everything except I put some bar ends on. I got some cheapo weyless for 10 bucks.
Bottom Line:Overall, I am happy with the purchase. I was able to get quite a bit of bike for the price. Year-end closeouts are nice. I am not a crazy rider or anything, but I do ride pretty hard every weekend. I probably should have considered a DH bike, but they are just ugly to me. THis bike is comfortable, ridable, economical, and good looking. Everybody is different and everybody has thier own wants and desires. Therefore I know that my opinion is a little bias because the bike fits my desires, but I would highly recommend this bike for the advanced riders, but not those crazy guys that break bikes a couple times a year.

Purchased At:MBC
Strengths:See previous review. So far, all the moving bits (drivetrain, suspension, wheelset, brakes) have worked really well, including a fair share of mud/dust, and consequent regular cleaning.
Weaknesses:One seatstay pivot bearing blew out, but Jamis and MBC replaced the part and after a two week delay, the problem was fixed.

I will also say that I probably won't get an anodised paint job ever again - cable rubbing, etc; is wearing spots of the paint away. Not that it affects how the bike rides, and not that I've got plans to re-sell, but all the same...
Similar Products Used:see previous review
Bike Setup:see previous review
Bottom Line:I've now ridden 2000 km, including an 8 hour solo, a 12 hour pairs, a 3 hour in mud/slop, and teams of 4 in a 24 hour race. I am pretty stoked with the bike. Apart from the anodised paint job wearing at contact points, I have no complaints. The XT discs are awesome, and very easy to adjust for rotor rub. I'm now looking forward to the shop giving it a compete overhaul, including a good service of both forx and rear shox, as well as overhauling the BB and both hubs.

Together with more kms in the legs, I feel pretty nimble and quick most times on the Jamis. It climbs really well, with virtually no bob once dialled in, and the fox forx, plus rear shox, make descending a lot quicker and fun!

Value for money, I'm stoked too! I'm not sure there could've been a better introduction to the world of full suspension for the price I paid! So, get out there and ride a Jamis Dakar if you love value for money, and your trails!

This bike climbs really well, especially if you lock out the shocks. The hydraulic discs are awesome! One finger is all you need to come to a sliding stop. Weaknesses:Poor design of the swingarm...Read below.
Similar Products Used:GT I-Drive, Giant VT

Bottom Line:I was considering another I-drive when I was bike shopping tossing between that and this Jamis. I found out that my local bike shop began carrying the Jamis line and was more than happy to go with the XC Expert. My decision weighed heavily on all the positive stuff I read from the Jamis website, this site, and word of mouth. Well....After three months of riding the weld on the drive side of the swing arm below the front deraileur broke. After seeing the design of the weld and the way it is put together it virtually has no support other than a small flange where they meet. It didn't help I was 6 miles deep in the woods when this happened. I hope that Jamis will come through and let their reputation superceed themselves and honor my wishes through warranty to upgrade me to the xlt frame as it seems like a more durable frame. Don't get me wrong this is probably the best bike I've ridden. They have really spec'd it out with some nice parts, and an excellent ride except for the design of the swingarm. I hope next years model will see an improvement of this. You can email for pictures of the frame if you wish.

Similar Products Used:Demo'd Kona King Kikapu, Rocky Mtn Element, Spec EPIC and FSR Stumpy
Bike Setup:Stock w/Easton carbon seatpost and riser bars, Ritchey WCS stem, Eggbeaters and Hutchinson Pythons
Bottom Line:This is my first FS bike, so I have come from hardtail climbing efficiency.

I've ridden over 200km so far and I am enjoying my riding a lot more through twisty singletrack and technical climbs. I think the efficiency that one loses through a FS bike, you will gain through traction and handling on technical climbs, and new-found aggressiveness on the downs!

The stock set-up (except for the bars and stem) beats by miles anything else I researched, leading to an efficient package for the XC rider looking to get right into enduro events. If we all had deep pockets, we'd all get Ellsworths, S-Cruises and Yeti's. For my money, I am pretty impressed so far with this, my first FS bike.

I am already feeling quicker, enjoying my riding more, and this is despite having 3.5 months off the bike for an injury.

Basically, if you are looking to get a FS bike, seriously look at the Jamis range. Value for money, they can't be beaten!

Strengths:I custom built up the bike, so I will speak for the frame alone. By the way I think people should talk more about the frames in this section instead of the componets. I'm sick of reading reviews about full suspension frames and there is some retard talking about the componets. If you want to talk componets, please go to the componet section. OK I had to vent for a few. Not a lot of BOB when you climb. The price is hard to beat. I know function before fashion, but the bike has a nice look to it as well. The fox Rl works great. The frames responds well. Tracks very good.
Weaknesses:Pizza, Beer, Hookers, Paying Bills, Eating late at night.
Bike Setup:Bontrager race wheelset, SRAM X.0 Rear D., XT Front D., Easton Carbon Bars, SRAM Hollow Pin Chain, SRAM Shifters, Thomson Post and Stem, Hutchinson Tires, Fox 100mm RL Fork. Bla bla bla......
Bottom Line:I bought this frame because I didn't want to get a lot of money invested until I knew if I liked full suspension bikes or not. To my suprise I like the frame very much. I recommend this bike to anyone who likes to cross country. I even race the bike. Sure it's not as light as some of FS bikes out there, but you will not find a XC frame with this kind of preformance for the money. I believe the frame and rear shock weights in the neighboorhood of 6.5 pounds. You can build this bike up to 24-25 pounds if you want to get some money invested into it. I think mine is built up at 26.5-27 pounds. I only have about 1300.00 in the bike total. Really good price for what you can get out of it.
