Product Description

The Speedfox is BMC's offering in the 120mm travel category, providing incredible pedaling efficiency and suspension acuity. With BMC's APS suspension design, the SF02 is one of the most efficient bikes out there while still maintaining a supremely active rear suspension. As with the rest of BMC's mountain bikes, the SF02 is equipped with the "natural born post mount" rear disc brake mount. This technology removes the need for disc brake adapaters to provide the greatest amount of braking power available. This feature also creates a much stronger seat stay and brake mount.

Strengths:    Suspension works well, I feel much less beat up after a tough ride than I did on my hardtail.

Overall a durable bike. I've put it through the ringer over the last year and the only failure has been the front brake.

Weaknesses:    Front brake is absolute crap. The amount of pulsating/grab/modulation experienced on the Slick Rock Trail almost killed me a few times.

Standover height is very tall compared to other bikes the same size.

Bottom Line:
This is a decent entry level FS bike. It seems a bit stretched out compared to other bikes and has a high standover height. Good for long cross country rides on rough terrain, soaks up the rocks and roots and leaves you feeling fresh. As noted in "weaknesses" the front brake is terrible to the point of being dangerous. One could argue that the Slick Rock Trail is a unique trail and brings out the weaknesses of a bike that you wouldn't notice anywhere else. To those I say my $700 Trek 6000 did better on that trail than this $1,900 bike.

160mm rear rotor - Speedfox SF02

Stock rotors are 185mm with the Elixir 3s The bike is a 2012, owned and soon to be raced by a NorCal high school kid. We want to lighten it up a bit for XC racing with a weight weenie wheelset and downsize all rotors to 160mm. He weighs about 140lbs so 160s should be fine for most of his riding ... Read More »
