Strengths:Very affordable
Weaknesses:Largest frame available is 19"
Bike Setup:Stock
Bottom Line:I purchased the 19" 505 frame hoping that it would be big enough for my 6'3" (with relatively long legs), but it just wasn't. I added a 400mm seat post (it comes with 350mm) and a handlebar with 2+" rise (as opposed to 1" stock) but still felt too small. Jimmy and Libby at Woodstock Bikes were totally cool with my returning it for a full refund within 30-days. No need to worry about getting screwed with this mailorder bike as the Woodstock folks are looking out for you. If you're a normal sized rider and want a very affordable hardtail, check out the Woodstock 505!

Strengths:- components / value
- support
Weaknesses:- pedals
- adjustments
Bottom Line:The bike is a fantastic value for the price. The frame is strong and overall the bike is comfortable.

Bike is easy to maintain and keep in top form, if you are familiar with a few basic adjustments (LBS can easily fill in, or call Woodstock support). Swapped out the pedals almost immediately with hybrid clipless/platform (maybe Woodstock can use this suggestion for future). With the longer frame the bike does climb really well, and it can move on the flat/pavement, but things can get a little ‘tight’ on twisty hiking paths, on sharper drop-offs … the rush that you’re ‘going over’ the handle bars is always there, and the on sharp climbs the ass-end tends to slip if you don’t keep your weight well over the back. Unclipping and using the platform side of pedals helps with all of these situations.

Can’t say enough about the SRAM X7 rear and Shimano front system – adjustment is straightforward and easy to keep in perfect working condition. I have damaged cables and had to replace, and once took a stick on a sharp climb that went right through the rear shifter (actually tore the aluminum hanger). Woodstock sent a new hanger in no time … I manually bent back into place one of the frame arms of the SRAM derailleur (I was ready to upgrade to an X9, but figured I give it a second chance), readjusted the whole system – back to perfect shifting in a few days time. The shifting system, once adjusted tends to stay put, which is unusual for NE-US (warm, hot, humid, cold, dry).
I used to remove front wheel a lot for transport and would get some disc/rotor rubbing. Best remedy is to loosen the mountings on the fork and realign body of brakes with rotor. Now that the bike has settled in a bit, this step is not necessary. The Avid discs have good stopping power when soaking wet or full of mud.

The bike is a tank. Little heavy, but gives impression it will last a long time. If $600-$1000 is target price range I would very much recommend this bike. If you’re looking for more really high performance mountain riding - pay for really high performance. It’s a unique bike and a conversation starter. The support at Woodstock is top notch. Performance under a variety of conditions is quite good. I’ve beat it up a little, and with a little care it looks and performs like I bought it at a local shop, wash it after every ride and take it in for a tune-up every year .

Bottom Line:Wonderful experience. I could not find another bike in this price range that came close to the quality of components. I'm thankful that I found Woodstock Bikes before I settled for a lower quality bike from my LBS. I don't ride enough to justify the $1,000+ price tag I was looking at for a bike with decent components that I was finding elsewehere.

Bottom Line:Great Bike for the money. I check out the LBS and none could match the quality/$ of the 505. If you want the big brand name go to your LBS and get your bike there.

If you want a great bike that will last and perform better then the same $$$ LBS, get a WB-505.

FYI, I still support my LBS when possible with parts and service.

Weaknesses:None so far...did bend the rotor on the rear disc brake, but that was my fault
Bike Setup:Stock
Bottom Line:I was lookin for a new mountain bike and wanted something that could take the abuse of my riding style. I first ordered the 19" frame but upon arrival and a few rides I realized it was too big. So I called up Libby at Woodstock and she said I could send it back for and exchange it for a 17.5" no questions asked. A week and a half later I was out riding on my new bike! Since then I've been taking it out and hitting dirt jumps, riding trails, and commuting to work on it and there are no major problems to speak of yet. I did have a minor problem with accuracy of the shifter so I emailed Mark at Tech. Support for Woodstock and he quickly emailed me back with quick fix...which actually worked!

Overall, the best bike I've ever had and I will recommend it to anyone in the $400-$1000 price range of mountain bike.

Bottom Line:Being new to the sport I purchased this bike a few months back based mostly on many of the reviews here and it has not disappointed. The initial setup took about a half hour with the brakes taking the most time to get correct. The rear hanger broke on my first ride out, but was replaced in a few days after a phone call to their support number. I have been riding with several friends who have been in the sport for many years. They were all very impressed with the component set and price of the bike and have since recommended it to many other people. I would highly recommend this product to anyone looking into getting into the sport looking to spend $500-$1000. To those of you who think that many of the posts are written by only a few people, I cannot discredit your theory, however it may have something to do with the company asking its buyers to post a review on MTBR after a purchase has been made. Being only an online company and not having a huge advertising budget/campaign, the most influential and cheapest way to advertise is word of mouth. Maybe if larger companies like Cannondale and Specialized were able to take some more time to talk with their customers they may have a larger number of reviews on their products. BTW I have nothing against the larger companies as I do own a Trek and a Cannondale.

Strengths:Great bike! Very similar components to the Cannondale Caffeine 3 I test rode at my local bike shop. Incredible Value. 400$ less. Great Customer service!
Weaknesses:They only make up to a 19" frame.

Bottom Line:I am 6'3" with a very long inseam and tried the 19" 505. Unfortunately, It was a bit small for me. I hated to send it back, because it was such a sweet bike but I had to. They dont currently make a larger frame. The people at Woodstock were really cool about taking it back and have promised a full refund as they say in their "30-day Satisfaction Guarantee". They even answered my call on a Sunday afternoon which was great as my weekdays are jam packed!
That all said, they are a great little company and I would recommend their product and their customer service to anyone based on my experience. In fact i already have.

Bottom Line:When I got the Woodstock 505 I was excited until I realized the derailleur was all out of tune because my RD hangar was bent. Emailed Libby and I got a new one in 4 days (weekend really prolonged that).

Brakes are damn near impossible to tune and my derailleur took me awhile because I sucked at tuning it and thought it sounded noisy. I also called Mark at Woodstock and my RD Cage was bent (shipping sucks).

After all this, it ended up being a great bike and it climbs very well. The fork is kinda sucky but with the money saved, it won't be too bad to get a new one. The Avid BB5 brakes were pieces of garbage. If you biff this bike AT ALL, the brakes will come out of alignment and you'll hear them from miles away. I'd prefer the BB7s, but again..the money saved can pay for this..

Bike is comfortable and all other good stuff..GREAT BUY!

Bottom Line:Libby, Jim, and Mark gave me great support when trouble arose. I blew out the rear tire and cracked the rear rim the first day, I think the tube was pinched during manufacturing assembly. They apologized profusely and immediately overnighted a new wheel/tire assembly at their expense. Sometimes things just go wrong. The mark of a great company is that they take care of you when things do go wrong. Woodstock Bikes did everything possible to ensure that I was back up and running as quickly as possible. Bravo!

Bike Setup:2007 Woodstock 505 19"
Bottom Line:The 2007 Woodstock 505 is a modestly priced mountain bike with impressive quality evident throughout. Many bikes priced several hundred dollars above it are with almost identical components and no better quality.

While for the most experienced and ambitious mountain bikers, a $1000+ bike may be the best choice, for the occasional mountain biker and price conscious consumer, the Woodstock is a much better deal. Moreover, this isn't a bike you are likely to outgrow anytime soon. It can capably handle any trail. I've certainly had a lot of fun even on advanced trails.

Thus, if you are looking for a high quality bike at a value price under $1000; the 2007 Woodstock 505 comes with my full recommendation.

BTW: Don't let the assembly turn you away. You can always call or e-mail Woodstock for help and their instructions have recently been improved a lot. If that's still not enough, it can always be built at a bike shop for 50-75 dollars.

Strengths:Great value. Really great customer service. Awesome ride.
Weaknesses:Shocks aren't the greatest but they're decent. Can't seem to get disc brake tuned just right.
Bike Setup:Stock
Bottom Line:I got this bike for weekend trail riding after riding a cheapo for the last year.

The thing I liked most about this bike (besides the really really good price) was how well it shifts. Once I got the hang of the SRAM trigger shifter I find myself shifting way more than before because its so easy to shift and so accurate, even when climbing.

My front brake disc was damaged when the bike arrived at my house so I called Woodstock and Libby said she could either send a new one that day or I could buy one and get reimbursed. I decided to get reimbursed which was the wrong choice because the guy at the LBS said he had a disc when he didn't, so I ended up waiting for him to order one anyway.

Reading the other reviews it sounds like most others had well-tuned bikes out of the box. My front brake disc always seems to rub a tiny bit even after taking it to the LBS for a $40 tuneup. While it was there the owner guessed the value of the bike at around $1000-$1200 so there's no doubt that this bike is an incredible value.

I will say the brakes work extremely well, though. No squeaking and big time stopping power. My friend has a $1000 Giant and his disc brakes squeak like crazy all the time, drives us nuts.

He wishes he would have bought a Woodstock! :) I'm glad I did!

Jimmy (the owner) tells me that he has a full-suspension version coming out in 2007 as well as a new 505 so that should be interesting. I might have to trade in my 505 for the full-suspension.

Strengths:Great frame (more toward the agressive side of position, which I like. Great component package. Customer service and communication from Woodstock was top notch. Bike came fast, packaged good, assembled easyly and has held up like a champ. This is a great bike!
Weaknesses:I heated up my front brake and glazed the pad, but $20 later it was working fine again. Other than that I have had zero problems with this bike.
Bottom Line:I wanted to give this bike a good run before posting a review. The bike showed up and I was out riding in about 1/2 hour. Everything worked perfectly. The frame is great quality and of course all the components are top quality as you can see on the website. I would describe my use of the bike and bordering on abuse and the bike has held up wonderfully. I ride this bike about 20-25 each night after work on trails. It is always ready to go. This bike is such a great value. I am happy to say that I have no complaints with this bike. If this one got stolen or something I would buy another just like it in a second. For a hardtail bike in this price range, you won't find anything better. 5 Flamin' Chili's all around.

Strengths:Everything
Weaknesses:The only issue with the bike I've had thus far has been with the fork and the pedals. I found that the fork leaked air and became very soft, but woodstock had already solved this problem by including a replacment spring, which once installed (incredibally simple)fixed the issue completly. The issue I've had with the pedals has been after banging them rather hard the spring has come out, requiring several irritating minutes to repair, but after tightening the pedal this problem was also removed.
Similar Products Used:toy store bikes
Bike Setup:stock, except for swapping the spring in the fork
Bottom Line:Overall the bike is terriffic. Setup was quick and easy out of the box, and didn't take more than 30 minutes. The only somewhat difficult part of assembly was the calibration of the disk brakes. My issue was compounded by the fact that the front one was rather warped, yet woodstock sent me another free of charge, so a pat on the back to their service. Once I had the brakes calibrated it was time to ride it. The bike rides really well, and I can keep up and do the same stuff as my friend on his 1200$ bike. So the 505 is a great bang for the buck. This bike has made me get serious about biking, I went from riding maybe once or twice a month to everyday after school. So, I would undoubtably reccomend the bike to anyone looking to get serious about the sport.

Strengths:Value for the price, customer service, nice disc brakes, smooth/concise xram rear derailleur, strong aluminum frame, front fork lockout feature, nice saddle, generally above average parts all around, climbs well.
Weaknesses:Front wheel came a little dished and will rub against the disc brake without careful adjustments. The front skewer and disc brake combination could be annoying if you like to take off the fron wheel for locking since realignment/adjustment of the skewer/front brake is often required. Also front disc brake could be damaged without front wheel on if someone decides to play with your brake levers while it is parked. The rear disc brake makes it a little more difficult to choose a rear rack. The weight of the bike is slightly on the heavy side around 30lbs. Tires are not very good in mud. Steep downhill on this bike could be a little scary.
Similar Products Used:Department store bikes.
Bike Setup:All stock parts except replaced to platform pedels.
Bottom Line:Overall an excellent value for the price. Very impressed with the service. Been riding this bike for commuting purposes and weekend trail rides. Very capable bike. The disc brakes are two edged swords...they really do an outstanding job of stopping in any condition, but they also require a little more sophisticated adjustments to be perfect. The rear disc brake also makes installation of standard rear racks difficult. Do look out for racks that can deal with rear disc brakes. My number one complain with the bike is the front disc alignment to the brake pads wobbles in high speed (i.e. wheel is a little dished). I'm hoping my local bike shop can make some wheel adjustment to make it go away. Second wish is the weight, just 5 lbs off would be nice. So far I've been happy with the bike. Definately would recommend buying it if you are looking for an entry level bike.

Strengths:Good component set, great value!! Customer service is amazing. Small sense of accomplishment for the do-it-yourselfer in me "assembling" (it came mostly put together) the bike myself.
Weaknesses:None really thus far. I have to readjust the brake caliper every time I install the front tire so it doesn't rub, but that's probably my fault and it's not difficult to remedy.
Similar Products Used:Test rode a base model '06 Specialized Rockhopper
Bike Setup:Right out of the box
Bottom Line:I almost purchased a Specialized Rockhopper at the LBS when they suggested I look into a Trek 4800/4900?. Being new to mountain biking, I went home to research it's components compared to the Rockhopper. I stumbled upon the Woodstock 505. I was looking in the $500 range, and at $640, the 505 was slightly over this beginner's budget. Although, once I noticed it's components were comparable to those of bikes costing much more, my thirst for a great deal wouldn't have been quenched buying any other bike. During my research of the 505's components (since you can only purchase it on-line, there was extensive research), I noticed the front suspension fork ('04 Manitou Axel Comp) was receiving some shady reviews (mtbr.com) from sticksion, bottoming out, and problems with the air assist damping. Everyone remedied the problem installing the firm ride spring kit (pn# 85-5241) so I set out to locate and purchase the kit only to find that the fine people at Woodstock bikes included the firm spring in the bike shipment to remedy these fork issues. Would have been nice to know they were going to do that before I purchased the kit, but kudos to them for going way above and beyond to keep their customers happy. I'm giving the fork a chance to break in before installing the spring (to see if I incur any of its reported issues), but if the issues arise I'll be ready. Off to the post office to return the spring kit I purchased. Woodstock Bikes has great customer service and a super-value product. I gave it 4 chilis overall because my friends' bikes are lighter, but that's just the Woodstock's durability shining through, right? I need to build up my quads for this sport anyway.

P.S. The bike outperformed me in a ten-hour adventure race I did at Muleshoe Bend in Austin

Strengths:Appears to be very robust. A lot of bike and components for a very reasonable price. You get to support the growth of a smaller outfit and feel smug about it. People ask what you're riding and are amazed at the price: Subsequently think you're a genious to have found an unheadof but great value product.
Weaknesses:Maybe a little on the heavy side - especially the forks. Paint job might not be to all tastes, though my wife likes it!
Similar Products Used:Specialized and Trek: Various
Bike Setup:As it comes, with some slight adjustments here and there to stop brakes
Bottom Line:Overview: Well, I have to say, I thought I was taking a bit of a risk with this purchase, but having been out on quite a few rides now I am very impressed. Read on:

Background: Until I bought this I only owned a very old, heavy and cheap Saracen mountain bike that I bought for about 50GBP back in the UK - but it was starting to fall apart under some new daily (ab)use (long, high speed, very bumpy, rocky trails). My main biking activity is on-road on a Specialized Allez road bike on the weekend, but I'd been getting more into the rougher trails on my old Saracen at lunch time during the week and needed to upgrade.

Discussion: I was pretty much out of touch with all things mountain biking and assumed I'd simply get a Specialized since I love the weight and stiffness of my road bike. However after being disappointed at the vaue for money they had to offer, I evaluated many other options including the Trek and then decided to take a little risk by purchasing my Woodstock 505 over the internet based on the reviews here and the comparisons on the site. Note: I didn't really want to spend a gazillion dollars on a sport I still wasn't sure I'd get into big time, but I have to say, BECAUSE of the quality of this bike and the fun I've had riding it, I have got into the mountain biking scene more as a result. It appears to be very stiff in the frame and forks which matters to me, and the provided SRAM and Deore gears shift very nicely indeed - certainly as well as the slick Campagnolo on my roady. The brakes are simply superb.

In summary: I think this bike is perfect for those with a smaller budget that want a good quality bike in order to determine whether mountain biking is for them. I don't believe they can go wrong with this. Those that aren't mechanically inclined should note that I had to adjust the brakes slightly to stop them scuffing the disks (REALLY easy though) and one of the crank arms needed tightening slightly (again, really easy and all the tools you need are provided and customer support was responsive and helpful).

Strengths:Good equipment for the price. Excellent customer service. Fast delivery! (2days)
Weaknesses:Would like some choice of eqipment upgrade. Personally prefer a pedal option.
Similar Products Used:Only other I've owned is a rigid framed Hardrock.
Bike Setup:Stock, except for a pedal switchout.
Bottom Line:I have to agree they have a good deal. Everyone wants more choices, but I see the value in a prepackaged deal keeping cost (and consequently prices) down. Customer service was timely and efficient. It's not advertised on their website, but the Manitou shock now comes with the upgraded "firm" spring in a seperate box. I havn't put it on yet, but that should appease the set interested in a firmer shock (I havn't really used it without the lockout on much yet). I upgraded (or more accurately downgraded) to some inexpensive platform pedals, as I don't own any SPD clipless shoes. I will eventually buy some, and the equipped pedals are rated highly on this site, but I would have paid a couple of extra bucks for a choice. Also, handelbars and stem take a little tweeking to get right. As well as location of shifter/brake cables. This is the fault of the instructions that over simplify a bit. I'm not dumb with a wrench, so I can fix about anything, but this bike is appealing to first timers predominantly, and the directions could be tweeked a little in their favor. Also, the front derailleur needed adjusting. It's just enough out of alignment to rub the chainguard constantly when shifting to the big ring. I don't find the geometry uncomfortable, but it is really long. Look at the specs on the top bar, and the wheelbase. Good beginner/casual use bike. It has plenty of good components for the price, that should last a long time without upgrading. The frame seems to have quality welds, and the paintjob is good (if a bit garish). They clearcoat over the decals, so no taking them off. If you have a lot of pride, and have to ride a big name brand, then go pay the extra. Overall, great bike for the price, and in a couple of years, if Woodstock can keep up the good service and keep prices reasonable, I think we'll see alot more of these on the trails. I know LBS's and manufacturers of the bigger brands are real jealous of the internet market, and want to protect their pockets, but they need to get real about what people want and start selling on line. My LBS's are gonzo over road bikes, so I don't have much support on the mountain bike side. If Specialized or Gary Fisher allowed internet sales, I probably would have bought there first.

Strengths:Wow, doesn't it seem like most of the reviews on this page were written by the same couple of people? The disc brakes are great, but they need adjustments. The SRAM componenets are the best. It is the best bike for the money. You should check out the comparison page on the Woodstock site. Same stuff over and over again. I am sure there are some legitimate posts, but definately not all of them.
Weaknesses:Since most of these posts do seem to be written by the same couple of people why did MTBR give it a CHOICE Award?
Bottom Line:I am sure this is a nice bike, but it should stand on its own merits. Just a theory, but maybe the guys at Woodstock generated the posts to get the numbers up so people would look at the bike. I'll help their numbers by giving them 5 chilis for being savy marketers.

According to the rules, this post shouldn't contain insults or attacks on other reviewers. I think this abides by the rules. I am simply making observations.

Price Paid: $640.00
Purchased At:www.woodstockbikes.com
Strengths:Over $1000 in parts (minus frame), and they're GOOD parts (except maybe the fork). Frame seems super strong!
Weaknesses:Weight: My digital scale said the bike weighed 31 pounds even. The website says 30 (small potatoes). Also, the fork seems a little cheap (Manitou Axel), but hey, don't expect $400 forks on a $600 bike. Personally, I'd take the hit on cheap forks if it gets you award-winning components. You can't get it ALL for this price, and I'd rather upgrade the forks, over time, instead of everything else. -Pedals are junk, too.
Bike Setup:Check it out on their website.
Bottom Line:The bottom line is that this is a great buy. It's got Avid BB5 brakes and Avid levers (no cheap tektro stuff), and, of coarse, beautifully working SRAM X-7 triggers and rear der. It WILL exceed the expectations of the people who buy it because, let's face it, if you're the kind of person who thinks they need better than X-7, or if you HAVE to have hydro brakes, than you're looking at spending $1500+ for a custom bike, not $600 for a kick@$$ multi-purpose hardtail.
However, having just received the bike, my main reason for this review was to clue new buyers in on my assembly and test ride, since it was NOT ready to go right out of the box (not that I expected it to be). The rear der. was a tiny bit off. On the largest cog, in the first gear, it wanted to push the chain right off the cassette. This was easily remedied by following the adjustment instructions (and this specific der. is famous for staying put after initial setup). Second was the front brake caliper. Upon initial inspection, I noticed the caliper was off axis in relation to the rotor. This, also, was easily remedied by following the instructions. It involved loosening the main screws that hold the caliper to the fork, squeezing the lever and retightening the screws, indexed correctly. I also adjusted the brakes to suit my taste, but they did work at first. Everything else is cream cheese.
MAN, this is an awesome bike!
5 chilis (should be 10) for unsurpassed value.
5 chilis (on a temporary basis) for overall until
further testing -heh,heh ;)

Strengths:Value...aka bang for the buck. Like the way I can climb on this bike...builds my confidence on climbs. I've riden for 6 months now and have been pretty hard on the bike and it rides like a champ...no major problems. This is my first bike since my last purchace in 97...so I'm all smiles with the new technologies.
Weaknesses:as others have said...lack of testing before buying. Was having some disc brake issues with the rotor rubbing the pad (trying to figure out if it was bent or not)...also broke my chain last week...and that has never happened to me...though it was a hard shift on my part.
Bottom Line:If you want the best value buy this bike....cant beat the price for what you get. I would say anyone seriously thinking about getting into Mountain Biking...but not sure where to start looking....look at the Woodstock 505. Its all you need to get into this wonderfull sport. I would also offer this bike to those who are already into the sport and want to buy a new bike...but dont want to have to fork out their life savings for a good bike.

Strengths:Everything! I am amazed at the value of this bike.
Weaknesses:I havent come accross any. This bike just plain rocks.
Similar Products Used:Test rode just about everything from $500-$1000. Old bike is a Nishiki Alien (now the commuter).
Bike Setup:Stock
Bottom Line:The Woodstock 505 is one of the best bikes I've ever ridden. I still cannot believe the price. To get something similar at a local bike shop I would have had to spend at least a grand (I looked). This bike feels just as good if not better than a lot of the bikes I test rode while shopping for a bike.

Anyone who knows anything about bike components knows that this bike comes well equipped. The Avid disc brakes are awesome, SRAM drivetrain is butter. This bike performs how I always wished my old bikes would. The only thing I was concerned with was the frame. I knew all the components were great, but I wasnt sure what the frame would be like. Well... let me tell you, it's awesome. The moment I opened the box I knew I had a top quality bike. The welds are excellent, this is one tough frame. The geometry is really good too. Responsive but not too snappy, comfortable, and it can CLIMB!

I have put this bike through quite a bit of abuse in the month that I've had it and it just keeps going. A friend of mine bought a Gary Fisher Marlin around the same time I got my bike and it has already needed it's first tune up... and even when tuned up, his LX drivetrain is no match for the X7 components on the Woodstock (and I havent had to make 1 adjustment yet).

Truly an awesome bike. If you have the cash, look no further. This is the most bike you can get for your money anywhere.

Strengths:Great Bike! Nice Value! All components on bike are top notch. The set up is well thought out, and I haven't had to add anything other than a computer. I love the clipless pedals....I thought I would want to exhange with egg beaters, but the Shimano's are awesome. I also thought that I would not like the color, but it looks great in person. You get a lot for your money with this bike!!!
Weaknesses:The biggest weakness is the obvious one….not being able to see or ride the bike before purchase. Also, I would recommend taking it by your LBS to fine tune the gear shifters and brakes. Neither of these is a big deal. I buy enough gear from my LBS anyway, that the mechanic performed these minor adjustments for free.

Bottom Line:The Bottom Line is that this is a great bike (especially for the money). What made me feel best about my purchase is when my LBS owner looked at the bike and said, “Wow, this is a really nice bike. This should cost about $1200.”

This is a great bike and a great buy. If you are looking for a nice trail bike, and you want to get the biggest bang for your buck, then I don’t see how you can go wrong here.

Bottom Line:I had an old Fuji mountain bike which served me for maybe 11 years, it was not great but very, very light and it was good enough for me to ride trails I enjoyed on weekends. But one day it got stolen....
Well, first of all just like most of you I found this mtb.review site at some point looking for some decent replacement of my Fuji bike. Of course I saw woodstock.com bike ad and thought: " there is no way I am flushing out over $600 bucks for a bike out of my wallet.
But when I really started to compare bikes and their value for the money the only reasonable buy I got left was woodstock 505. Obviously the most important factor here were the reviews of other 505 woodstock users who took their time to post reviews.
I have had this bike for about 2 months now. Was it all perfect from the box ? hell no. I had to adjust disc brakes, headset, replace pedals, which for a newbie like me was not such an easy task. What`s more, my truativ seat post bent after I fell when challanging a very steep and rocky hill going down. I just replaced that seat post for $19.00.
When having some problems with adjusting bike parts I contacted one of the previous reviewers, namely Jay Collier from Florida who was really helpful and I want to thank him for that.

The more I ride this bike the more I love it. Accelarating and going up all sort of hills became a pleasure.
The tires just grip to any kind of terrain. (they are not too great for a road though, but it is a MTB)
Also, I am really to take advanced decends that I could never dare to take on my old Fuji bike unless I wanted to end up in a hospital.
I am not going to write about the value for the money you get, go to woodstock.com and see comparison charts for yourselves and guess what, I did visit my lbs and for about the same money they offered me a bike far inferior to 505 woodstock so instead of supporting my lbs that wanted to rip me off I chose to support a small American company from Georgia like Jimmy Woodstock`s.

Right on my first ride in Van Cortland Park in the Bronx two guys stopped me to ask how good and heavy the bike was and they ware very impressed.
Even my wife, who will ride a bike only after tortured by our 8 year-old kid who rides his Trek 220 with me almost every day, admitted woodstock 505 is a great bike to ride on easy trails just for pleasure.

Mannificent product by Jimmy Woodstock. !!!!

Strengths:Everything a consumer should expect from a new-comer; quality, value, service and a kickass ride. Read my “Bottom Line.”
Weaknesses:I think I would have gone with a higher quality, brake boss-less fork. That’s just me though. I guess that so long as this is the only thing I can think of, it’s not all that bad then, is it? I would have bought a 21 incher if he offered one.
Similar Products Used:Gary Fisher Kaitai w/ Canecreek thudbuster
Bike Setup:OE (a perfect blend), Cateye odo, some aluminum bar ends and eventually a thudbuster.
Bottom Line:For starters, let me apologize as I feel I am going to be long-winded here. I put a lot of effort into my shopping for a new ride, so this post is for the value-shopper who has been lucky enough to stumble upon the 505, and is now considering it for purchase. If you end up reading this entire post, you will think I was paid for what I am about to write. This couldn’t be further from the truth. $639 is a lot of money for anyone, and I had always likened buying a bicycle to buying shoes; there’s no way in hell I am going buy it until I have tried it myself, so an internet purchase was far from anything I had originally considered. Granted, Woodstock Bikes appears to have an almost no-questions-asked return policy, but still; it’s a hassle in the event one needs to be reassembled and returned.

I bought this bike for a couple of reasons; one was obvious-to save money. Another is my underlying devotion to people who take what is easily a perceived risk and become their own boss. As American consumers, I believe we all owe it to these people to give them at least one shot at earning our business; and that is exactly what I wanted to do with Jimmy’s company. Even the fact that I know the owners name and have spoken with him exemplifies a company founded on excellent customer service and one dedicated to its customers, especially a bicycle company. You get my point, right? Okay, on with the show.

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out what you are getting here. If you visit the Woodstock Bikes web site (http://www.woodstockbikes.com) and take a look at the components he has decided to use on the 505, you will realize you are getting the perfect balance of quality, performance and weight. In and of themselves, the OE components on the 505 are spectacular. Therefore, the only other factors left for the consumer to consider are the frame and the overall integrity of the company that assembles the bike. I say assembles in lieu of building or manufacturing for a reason, and this is why.

As far as frames go, it is true that very few of the big-name bike companies actually manufacture their own frames. Some of them don’t even have direct oversight of production. It is my understanding that Jimmy has contracted a highly respected manufacturer, which has been in the business of bicycle frame production for a very long time. Call him and ask him-he’ll tell you. I’ll be the first to admit that I know nothing about welding aluminum, and I couldn’t give a crap as to what it looks like. What I do happen to know and care about is performance, quality and value; and the Woodstock 505 bicycle frame appears to exemplify all three. On a side note, the frame is free of audible cracks and ticks, as it should be, and the welds are flush with their respective angles and arches. I have read that some people find the paint and sticker job rather retro. Personally, I really like it. Everything else out there looks the same anymore, so what’s wrong with having something a tad bit different. It’s also hard to tell if the bike has stickers or if it the lettering and numbering have been painted on since it is covered with a near flawless clear coat. I could name some high-end bikes that still use cheap stickers.

In the beginning of this post, I touched on the fact that I spent some time with Jimmy on the phone before I bought the bike. After all is said and done, he is doing it right. He assured me that if there was anything I didn’t like about the bike, I could send it back without any questions asked; so again, why not give the 505 a shot. He has also proven himself to be reachable via phone and email. I haven’t had that kind of luck with companies that have their own dedicated service departments. In conversation, he will tell you that his number one concern is your satisfaction. This was a statement I believed to be true.

When I received my 505, I scrutinized every detail from the packaging to the simplicity of assembling it. As you can guess, the packaging was done right and the assembly instructions were as clear and concise as one could hope.

The Ride

I had the 505 out on the trails as soon as I could (Markham). The first thing I noticed was how smooth and effortless the pedaling was and how light the bike felt underneath me. It took a few miles of riding to get used to it, but when I did, I couldn’t believe the ride. What I noticed most was how well this bike allowed me to climb inclines that I never could before. Besides impeccable geometry, I feel much of this bikes climbing ability is due to the tires. They grabbed everything from sand, dirt, rocks, roots, wood, etc. The gears also shifted almost instantaneously, which surely assisted in the climbs as I started to slow.

Please note that I still consider myself a novice rider, but during one of my breaks, I had three guys in matching sponsored jerseys that were riding with a group of twelve stop and ask me about the 505. They were amazed at how little it weighed (they were on full-suspension bikes) and (looking at the components) couldn’t believe their ears when they heard how much I paid. They also gave me a complement on an ascent that is usually impossible, which I took with a sense of pride. I know that looks pathetic in print, but it’s the truth so there you go.

I hope this helps anyone who is considering this bike. If you are genuinely interested in buying one, or wish to know how mine is doing, please feel free to drop me an email at jay1622@yahoo.com. I hope I have as many good things to say in a year as I do now, though I’m sure I will.

Weaknesses:The only weakness is that it is very difficult (if possible at all) to test ride one of these before putting money down.
Similar Products Used:Gary Fisher Tassajara, Trek 6500, Giant Rainier

Bottom Line:This bike was an absolute steal at this price (plus no tax outside of GA or shipping). The component group is great (sram x.7 shifter and rd, deore fd, avid disc brakes and levers), and shifts with a smoothness and precision I never got out of my LX's. The avid disc brakes are the best brakes I have ever used, giving excellent feedback and stopping power. Rounding out the group is a spline drive Truvative crank and bb.
While this part group coupled with a light, bombproof frame and solid manitou axel fork alone makes the bike a great deal at under 650 bucks, what really sets it apart is the small stuff. The WTB Lazer V saddle is very light and comfortable, the Answer Pro-Taper handlebars are light, sturdy, and look great, and the WTB Speeddisc wheelset with Wierwolf tires provide great grip and acceleration. Woodstock could have skimped on any of these parts, but instead went with good stuff.
Overall, I am extremely impressed with the quality of bike I got for my $$$. If you are in the market for a 500-1200 dollar bike, go to woodstockbikes.com and look at the spec comparison page. It can be scary plunking down money for a bike sight-unseen, but I am very impressed with my bike, and i am sure that anyone wanting a solid xc hardtail with great parts will be as well.

I want a price that makes me think I am stealing the item in question. I feel I came pretty close to that with this bike. no tax outisde GA, and free shipping. I am in NY and the people at woodstock (in Georgia) were more accessible and helpful than either of my LBS'.

my only gripe is that the disc brakes seem like they may be a pain in the butt. I was not aware they were on most bikes these days. I couldnt ride the bike until I got a freind to come help me adjust the calipers so the discs didnt rub like crazy. For $20 my LBS would have adjusted them, which isnt a big deal, but I wonder how simple a spill it would take to knock them out of whack again.

Overall I am extremely happy with the bike and would reccomend it to anyone shopping for a good XC trail bike that would cost you at least $850-$1000 from other bigger name manufacturers

I was looking for a new bike that was light and durable and most importantly a good price. In a nut shell I wanted it all--cheap! With this bike I got it all.
