Strengths:    Want to learn how it felt for the pioneers of the sport? This is the one. You feel every little twitch, you know what's going on underneath you. Balance point is quite a long way back, wheelies have the bike damn near perpendicular to the ground. Simple to run, no suspension to screw up. Nice and light. Beautiful climber. The best name in the business.

Weaknesses:    Don't think you can just throw this thing down a rough track at speed like you can a decent dual suspension bike. You'll get the crap kicked out of you. Those of you who've grown fond of your hydro disks may be in for a bit of a shock with this creature. Small children with cheap department store dual suspension bikes will mock you. Modern version is overpriced, get an original. Honestly. That way you can at least pick the colour!

Bottom Line:
I'm mostly a road rider. This bike is changing that.
If you want to teach yourself about mountain bikes, find a nice, relaxed XC track, one of these bikes and spend some time going back and forth.
A second hand example costs bugger all, and you have THE mountain bike. Not the best at anything, but the genesis of the sport.
It's pure, distilled essence of mountain bike.

Just got a 2007 Stumpjumper Classic

I just bought a Stumpjumper reissue off Craigslist. The bike has about 5 miles on it. Quality-wise, it's pretty marginal. Decently welded frame. Plastic brake levers. Cheapish seatpost and seat. Ridiculously nice drivetrain. I'm going to take off the drivetrain and put on something more period corre ... Read More »

OT (26" Content): 2007 Stumpjumper Classic

Anybody seen this? Pros: Tange steel, fork crown, fastback seat cluster. Pretty awesome looking. Cons: Original geometry. http://specialized.com/bc/SBCBkModel.jsp?a=b&minisite=10029&bikeTab=features&spid=16882Read More »

2007 Stumpjumper Classic Update...

Didn't see it mentioned here yet so... Info from the '07 Reno show confirmed they are doing a small run (200) of Stumpjumper Classic bikes. The way-too-modern 9-speed cranks are intact. No word at this point as to whether the GC tires will be available aftermarket, but if you really want ... Read More »
