Good bike for the money frame is very strong I fell about 15 feet and the only thing that broke was the seat. It shifts well only, stuck once or twice throughout the 6 months I've had it, the brakes suck the squeak a lot and need ajustment almost every ride and the crank or drivetrain I'm not sure which one squeaks A LOT whenever I'm going up hill.
But over all decent bike for an entry level rider.

Strengths:
Geometry is good, climbs very well, Shimano Deore rear derailleur is ok but not great. Rockshox Tora is appropriate for price level.
Weaknesses:
Cheap crankset doesn't transfer power as well as I'd like. I cannot make the front brake stop whining very loudly no matter what I do. I've cleaned and burned the pads with rubbing alcohol, cleaned out the brake assembly itself, won't stop whining. Cheap wheelset, heavy and high rolling resistance.
Bike Setup:
Stock except for seat, SPD pedals, bar ends.
Bottom Line:
This is a good beginner to low intermediate bike and the frame is very strong. I would recommend it to people who are just getting into the sport, and if money is an issue, it is very easy to upgrade the parts on this bike as you can afford it. Don't buy this bike if you have several years of serious riding under your belt and want better parts at the get go. Overall I do like this bike.

This bike has many strengths for the price you pay. The frame is strong, the tires are deceptively aggressive, the brakes (BB5) are the best I have ever used, and the shifting is smooth (X4 shifters, X5 RD and Altus FD with an 8 speed cassette). The Dart 3 fork gets the job done (I use the lockout very often) and the geometry of the bike allows me to climb very well.
Weaknesses:
-Rims (bent the front rim in a low speed crash; I wasn't expecting that!)
-Pedals (I bought a set of Forte Platform pedals; they work great!)
-8 speed cassette (not really a weakness but some may feel the need to upgrade to a 9 speed)
Similar Products Used:

Bike Setup:
-Added Forte Platform Pedals
-Added Specialized Bar Ends (I may not keep them; havn't really "used" them; they may be redundant with a riser bar)
Bottom Line:
This is an excellent bike for a any biker, from beginner to a veteran. The components are not high end, however they work just fine. If you are going to upgrade this bike, keep in mind the frame (its a little heavier than competitive XC bike frames). I am a recreational rider- this bike was perfect for all of my needs. I have pushed the bike hard and have not been disappointed.

Everything. Frame is strong, unfortunately I have tested the frame strength more than once. I weigh 230, so I'm testing the strength. Climbs great, I rarely ever need to use granny gear even on steep climbs. Geometry feels great. Much more aggresive geometry than hardrock, which is why I went for rockhopper rather than hardrock.
Weaknesses:
Pedals, but that's a given. People complain about the seat, but it feels fine to me. Wheels were weak, I bent the front rim, replaced with rhyno lites, which are nice. Sometimes, front shifting is slow, not sure if this is due to shifter or derailler. Also, took awhile to get breaks to keep from squeeking all the time. But they stop on a dime. I think my bike shop sandpapered the front disc pad, which helped alot. Now no noise.
Bike Setup:
stock, except shimano spd 520 pedals, rhyno lite wheels, new handlebar due to recall, oury lock-ons
Bottom Line:
Excellent bike. I love it. It has really gotten me into mtb. My wife ended up buying the myka version because it's such a good bike. Excellent for beginner-intermediates. Frame is great. They use the same frame on the highest end rockhopper, so very upgradeable (until you decide to go fs). Chain Reaction in Gainesville is great, best customer service.

Bottom Line:
This review is for the '08 Rockhopper Comp Disc. I got it on sale for $700, but I believe the original price was around $850. Overall, it's a great bike. It climbs well, descends well, is light for the price (I believe it weighed in at 28lbs). The frame is pretty nice and certainly worth keeping around for upgrading, and the components, while not the best, will do the job. If you want to keep it under $1K and fairly new, this should be on your short list of bikes. It pushes me to be a better rider. It does a little bit of everything, except maybe AM or DH.
But, on the to the issues. The first problem I noticed was chain slap. If you want to cheap the chainstay in decent shape, get a protector for it. The pedals are not too good, either. I whack them on all sorts of stuff, they don't shed mud well, and they don't grip my shoes at all. I'd say changing these should be one of your first upgrades. The seat sucks, but hey, you shouldn't be sitting that often anyway. Unless your bum is really hurting, I wouldn't bother upgrading this. the shifting isn't the smoothest, but it's not bad. If you really don't like it, trying going for LX/X-7 derailleurs and shifters. My only other qualm is handling. It was great at first, but I began noticing there times when I feel like I should be able to turn tighter, but the tires just keep wandering off track. A shorter handlebar might help with this. The tires aren't bad for my area. We have a lot of hardpack dirt trails, so the low knobs grab well. I just wish they had more side knobs, as I wash out a lot if turning too tight in loose corners. But if you want to do anything more aggressive, you should probably consider tires with more grip.
Overall, a good bike. I give it 5 chilis for value because it packs a lot of value per dollar, and a 4 for overall because it performs better than I had hoped, though does have a few minor hangups. I highly recommend it!

Pretty good value for the money. this is my second MTB after taking 10 years off from riding. Front rock shox perform well and disc brakes stop on a dime. I have read that the seat is uncomfortable, but it works fine for me. I think this is just a matter of preference. the trubliss tires work well for me here in North Texas and hill country...our trails are typically hardpacked clay and/or limestone.

The bike is very durable with a frame that should last forever. It has easily handled the 150 or so of tough trail miles I have put on it so far. Components are good, and can easily be upgraded. Handles well compared other 21" frames (I'm about 6'3', 185)
Weaknesses:
Stock pedals are horrible. Replaced them very quickly. The seat isn't very comfortable, but that's what padded bike shorts are for.
Similar Products Used:

Bike Setup:
Crank Brothers Acid MTB Clipless Pedals. Stock Fast Trak tire on front. Specialized 'The Captain' rear tire.
Bottom Line:
The bike gives you good stock components for the price. Plan on buying new pedals right from the start, but that comes with many bikes. The tires were the only thing that caused me problems. I rode the stock tires till one got a good 2 inch slit in it. I then put a better tire on the back with more traction. Since then, no complaints. Have had to tune the rear derailleur a couple times, but it stays tuned pretty well.
If you're looking for a XC hardtail, I strongly suggest this bike. It will do anything you ask it to on the trail. Excellent bike for the price paid!

Bottom Line:
I used to ride mountain bike around 6+ years ago. Then stopped, and 4 or so years ago picked up road, went through 2 bikes and wanted to change it up and got this bike. Used it for little over 2 months while stock on some of the highest level difficulty trails near Tampa/Lakeland with no problems. Many of the stock components are on the heavy side but I look at it like this. I ride with it being stock and a little heavy but get in better shape faster, if its heavier you have to do more work to move it uphill and maneuver it around obstacles. Then over a little time I get more used to it and upgrade components to make it lighter and overall better, so when I have it fully done I will be a better rider physically and mentally than if I simply when out and bought a $5000 bike. Also you will save plenty of cash this way also.
Also everyone saying the seat is uncomfortable....thats why they make riding shorts. With a seat being slim downed on padding it weighs less as well as is firm so you don't hit it and bounce off when on a trail. Same for just about every mid-high end saddles out there. Plus if you are sitting down that much then you should step up to some more difficult trails, or more exciting ones.

This bike has a nice component package for the money. A strong frame, Deore deraillers and the fork worked nicely dampening everything well I rode on. As someone whos just getting into the sport after a few years off I was surprised to see discs on XC bikes and the ones on this bike worked well on technical downhill sections.
Weaknesses:
I have had this bike for less than 2 weeks. The first 20 or so miles I logged were road miles. Yesterday was the first time I took it on some more technical single track and I already need my wheels trued. I may have pushed this bike a little hard, but none-the-less not to happy. The lockout on the fork doesnt lock completely, but the travel you get is so minute that it really isnt an issue. Front end pitches up a little on steeper climbs, but easily corrected. THE PEDALS! Go buy a pair before you take this bike out, even its if just a road ride. If your shoes get wet you will be in a world of hurt. Make it easy and get something else. Heavy, 29-30 lbs for a 21"

Stock except upgraded CB pedals
Bottom Line:
The M4 frame and Deore drivetrain make this bike worth having. The shifting is smooth, and it is easy to pedal after removing the stock pedals. This frame is relatively light, I am 6'5" 240, and seems extremely durable. I have put about 120 miles on the bike so far (about half on singletrack), and the brakes are holding strong. The price of this bike seems like an extremely good buy for anyone who is looking to maximize value on a XC hardtail.

This replaced a 2007 Diamondback Sorrento. Pedals much better. Front fork is decent when compared to the pogostick on the Sorrento. The M4 frame now standard on the 2008's is supposedly a pound lighter than the 2007's A1 frame. The only real complaint I have is the paint. I dont even know if I would even call it paint. Hard to explain without seeing it in person. Overall, I'm happy with the bike and it is a great improvement of the Sorrento.

Strengths:
Shimano Deore shifters all the way through. Large fork to support me (6'3" 225). Pretty much all top line equipment throughout the entire bike.
Weaknesses:
Seat shifts sometimes, not to mention not very comfortable (you have to buy bike shorts). Some squealing in the breaks. Going over jumps is tricky due to fork abosorbing all the take-off.
Bike Setup:
Factory, 21" frame
Bottom Line:
I cannot say enough about this bike. I bought it to get back into shape and maybe cure these shin splints i have. I have ridden a few trails (6mi.) and this bike handles it all. I felt comfortable and in control the whole time. I also went on some long flat road trails and the lockout option on the fork is great because i can ride for hours and not lose any speed due to front shock taking away momentum. I would definitly buy this if you are a first timer or just someone looking to get back into the sport. This bike will help you and train you along the way.

A great bike for the price, pedals just as well as some of the higher end XC bikes. With a couple tweaks, it's definitely a trail worthy bike. The stock pedals suck, so upgrade as soon as possible. Overall I've been really happy with the bike, climbs well, and is stable on descents, even on the the super technical stuff some of our local trails throw at you. Frame only review! Bought the frame for £100 and its great. This years is made from M5 alloy, not A1, so its a lot lighter. The angles are perfect at 70 degree head and 73 seat and I've even put a 120mm fork on it and its still great for fast riding. Standover clearance is huge and this is a real boon - why are'nt all frames like this? I'm '5"10 and the 17" is perfect with a 22.5" horizontal top tube measurement. Also has eyelets for a rear rack which is rarely seen on decent frames nowadays and the disc only spec looks really tidy. Paint and graphics are top notch, welds good and finish in general is excellent. A Cracking frame that shames many more expensive offerings. By the way the Comp Disc model costs £750 ($1600) in Britain while its only $850 in America. Good to see that the massively strong pound's still not making a difference to the prices we pay in Blighty!! Gawd bless capitalists, one and all!!!

The frame itself is very strong, extra fussets on head & down tube, with just the right amount of rear end flex for me. I have a 2005 version, which I much prefer over the later 2006-2007 versions. Geometry is good, you can use up to a 130mm fork with minor tweaks to bars/stem
Weaknesses:
If anything it is more the way I have the bike set up, for serious pump it up climbing, the front end does tend to lift on steeper gradients.
Similar Products Used:

Bottom Line:
Bike has been built up by myself to suit my riding and the conditions here in Scotland, rough, tough mud & crap in the winter. Rough tough rock & stones in the summer. We do a lot of riding up in the highlands over glens & moors, drovers tracks & single track, so the bike has to be able to withstand a fair amount of abuse. I can truly say that the Spech hopper in it's present guise is an ideal hardtail. Can be used by beginners and experienced MTB'rs, but like most things, when you get to the level where you are confident in your ability it really comes down to personal taste, I would highly recommend the hopper.

Bottom Line:
I have the 2006 model that I bought ~1.5 years ago. This is my first mtn bike with shocks, so take my review accordingly. This really is a good solid bike and if you are looking for a bike in this price range, I dont think you will be disappointed. Sure, you could get something lighter weight with some better components, but not at this price. It has taken quite a beating and is still working great. I havent had to replace anything but 3 spokes, tires, and chain since I bought it; i ride local trails 2-3x/week year round. The frame absorbs shock and is very strong, so you can upgrade to better components later on for upgrades or as they wear out. Other than seat and clipless pedals that i put on there when i bought it, the only real upgrade I am making is handlebars (got nervous about breaking the stock ones after 1.5 yrs of pounding) and a new wheelset so i can go tubeless. Additionally, I really like the front shock - adjustable on the fly (without even having to stop) and negative pressure is adjustable as well (again, this applies to the rok shox on the 2006 model). I'd recommend this to anyone that wants a durable hardtail with some higher end features at a medium end price. It'll last you a long time vs a cheaper one with bottom end components. I'd definitely purchase it again.

Bike Setup:
Replaced stem and handlebars to fit my comfort, different tires. Clipless pedals of course.
Bottom Line:
I'm a big guy (~300lbs) and this bike has held up very well under my weight. Sure i have broken some spokes but after a local shop retensioned all the spokes, things have been doing pretty good. I have pounded it on some hard terrain and some small drops and its holding up well. It performs on the downhill quite well and with proper technique i can keep up impressive speed. The brakes do get hot if you really need to brake a lot for narrow turns and such, but thats probably true of most all brake systems.
This bike is a great XC machine as stock equipped but the frame seems to be able to handle about anything.
With a stronger crankset and wheelset, this bike would be basically bomb proof.

Rockhopper comp disc with sram x gen f/d, manitou black fork, sun singletrack rims, xt hubs, odi rogue lock on grips, cateye speedo and light, crank bros mallet, but now the pedals off of my big hit
Bottom Line:
Great but except for everything that I replaced now it rides like a top of the line hardtail no complaints, buy it spend a few hundred on upgrades and be set. The fork blew out and sent me to the ER on a three foor drop. Great bike, buy the PRo and be happy!

Strengths:
Very light for squared tubing. Squared tubing makes frame stronger. Mechanical disc brakes are plenty strong to stop me. Manitou splice forks keep my arms from absorbing much of the terrain during downhill. Gears are very smooth to change. This bikes has a very comfortable forward position while sitting on saddle.
Weaknesses:
Be nice if it came with clipon pedals, but dealer gave me option to trade in strapped for clipons.

Bottom Line:
For the price this is as good as it gets and I am very happy that I purchased this bike. Bike is indestructable, I fell off a 20 foot cliff and the bike had no damage at all, not even a scratch.

Strengths:
Lite and easy to haul around.
Weaknesses:
Get ready to buy a new seat and better pedals. A bike this expensive deserves better.

Out of the box except new seat and poverty platform pedals.
Bottom Line:
This is about as good as it gets in this price range. If you need a hard tail this bike is a good choice. I am a big guy. The fork can accomodate various spings depending on your weight, so anyone can modify it to work for them.

Strengths:
Strong frame, excellent value
Weaknesses:
Componetry, mainly weak derailleurs
Bike Setup:
Stock. Marzouchi MZ Comp, Alivio & Acera
Bottom Line:
Great starter bike. Could have easily spent more, but will be cheaper to upgrade. Being a beginner I don't ride that hard but has stood up to stairs and one foot drops nicely. Riding over 5' tumbleweeds are the only thing that messes up my derailleurs. Hayes mechanical will stop you when you want it unless it's wet, then it screams at you & then stops. The stock Enduro tires grip everything but death cookies. Probably will upgrade derailleurs but overall an excellent bike.

Strengths:
Slick color. All components so far have worked great. I've only ridden it during the fall of 2004, but plan to give a good test this spring/summer. Weight is good, and the brakes are excellent.
Weaknesses:
Tires seem to be a little too large. Other than that, the bike seems to be an excellent choice.

I purchased this bike when my old peugot was stolen last summer. Test rode a Giant, Cannondale and Navarro, and decided on this one because of the excellent value compared to the other brands. Bike also felt more comfortable than the others.
Bike Setup:
Factory setup, no changes so far except added a computer.
Bottom Line:
For the money, this was the best value out there for what you get. If you are looking for a beginner to intermediate level bike, you can't lose with this bike.

Strengths:
Flat silver paint looks good. Manitou fork work well even for one that came on the bike. Avid BB5 disc brakes work great.
Weaknesses:
Needs clipless pedals and presta valves from the factory. Specialized tires are to big. Baloon like.
A guy at my work who just started is from South Dakota and has gotten me into mountain biking. Needless to say I'm a newbie. That being said I did a lot of research before purchasing this bike and I can tell you that this bike can't be beatten in this price range. I tested all kinds of bikes (Cannondale, Kona, Trek etc...) and this bike kicks but! My buddy has a Raliegh with all XT components that he paid $1200 for and I'm all over him on the trail. My bike is even lighter than his! If you're new to this sport like me I suggest getting this bike if you don't have $3000 to spend. I have been extremely satisfied!
