Submitted by jmwilli25 a Weekend Warrior from Kent, Ohio, US
Date Reviewed: May 7, 2009
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $550.00
Purchased At:Eddie's Bike Shop
Strengths:Quick shifting, stock grips are comfy, frame is tough
Weaknesses:front derailleur, heavy, front shocks (should have upgraded to rock shox)
Similar Products Used:2007 trek 4300 disc
Bike Setup:stock
Bottom Line:Of course there are always going to be things that some people aren't going to like and there are immediate upgrades needed if you are going to take this bike through rough trails, but for those whom are looking for pretty much a great all around bike, that is decent on the road and pretty nice off-road then this is definitely a great bike. I have logged about 500 miles on this bike and I am still just as satisfied with it as the day I bought it.

If you are just getting into trail riding this is the bike to get. It has the quality you need to last a long time.

Favorite Trail:One's that go in a downward direction
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $500.00
Purchased At:Wheel Sport
Strengths:Good strong frame, fork (only because its lasted so much longer than I expected it to.) Decent wheelset for the price.
Weaknesses:Pretty much all of the components, derailer's, grips, rims (can't handle the rough stuff), crank broke off.
Similar Products Used:DiamondBack Outlook, Specialized RockHopper, Huffy
Bike Setup:Pretty much stock for now, Ive got a new cassette(original one got pretty bent and messed up)and seat, getting a new wheelset as soon as I get the money.
Bottom Line:It was a very good bike for starting off, and I'm very happy with the way the frame feels, other bikes just dont feel right now. Just have to upgrade parts as you progress and as the bike falls apart. The brakes howl and squeek like nothing Ive heard before, but they still get the job done, just have to adjust them quite a bit. The wheelset is good for casual riding around town and XC, but their just not meant to take agressive DH, and they dont.

Date Reviewed: January 18, 2009
Favorite Trail:St. Ed's
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $600.00
Purchased At:Gotham Bikes, NYC
Strengths:I could afford it, stock components are adequate, sturdy, guides for cables and hydraulic lines
Weaknesses:Stock handlebars and fork are super-heavy, stock fork is sprung way too hard for me (I way 145 lb) and has a poor service life, stock saddle was a little soft for me, stock stem is too short. Downtube cable routing
Similar Products Used:'00 Schwinn Mesa, even older Novara hybrid
Bike Setup:It's the '07 model, with Shimano Acera/Altus shifters and drivetrain, Specialized HRD wheels, Avid BB5 disc brakes, upgraded with Manitou R7 fork, Specialized XC flat bar, longer stem from Nashbar, Panaracer Smoke/Dart tires, different saddle, bar ends, Time ATACs
Bottom Line:The stock bike is very versatile - the shortish top tube and sturdy components mean it can be very upright and comfortable for short rides and messing around in mountain bike skills parks or on dirt jumps, but a more xc-oriented rider like me can stick a flat bar and longer stem on it and turn it into a good climber. This bike was a little bit of a revelation for me since my previous mountain bike was such a long time ago and everything has improved - the disc brakes are a big improvement over V-brakes and even the stock fork, before I got the R7, was better than what I was used to. I switched out the stock flat pedals for my old Times as soon as I could and the the fork, handlebar and tire changes were pretty rapid too. It took me longer to decide the saddle was too soft, and I didn't switch it until I could "borrow" a better one.

My full-suspension friends are sometimes faster than me on rolling trails, but I can drop them on a climb. I've even gone cyclocross racing on it, although lifting it feels like dying a little bit every time.

It's not the lightest bike in the world, though, and the front derailleur's not great. The original fork lost its travel over just a few months of riding.

Buy it if you're just getting into or getting back into mountain biking and it's what you can afford. If you're not in a hurry (I was) hold out for something with a better suspension fork.

Strengths:Beefy frame, comfy seat, i actually dont mind the gooey shock with the beefy stanchions.
Weaknesses:pedals are awful, derailer is okay at best
Bike Setup:all stock for now will be upgrading pedals very soon, looking forward to throwing a sram drivetrain on it, and new cranks. looking forward to keeping this bike for a while
Bottom Line:caught the bike on sale end of year 2008, good bike for the price, slap something on it to stop the chain from hitting the frame, rode it yesterday flowed fine nice tight handling, pedals like a big hit bike i think, back tire will need to be upgraded eventually, good platform to upgrade parts as you go, i am happy with my purchase

Purchased At:Middle Ring Cycles
Strengths:A good strong frame, the wheel set is ok a little weak. Good shifts, Brakes are good you have to set them up a little or they will rattle. The front tire is good holds in the bumpy fast stuff. Good for cross country stuff, But you can still hit jumps I'm a lite guy but it handled well.
Weaknesses:The back tire slips way to much in grany gear, Replased it with an Intince EX. The fork is good but it tacks 20 milles of rocky trails to get it going good. The rear deraler istent tight enuf it rattles over any bump.(Put it this way my frends were at the bottom of the hill and they thot I had thrown my self off the mounten, but it was gust the chain)
Similar Products Used:Rock hopper 29er, cannondale

Purchased At:The Bicycle Garage
Strengths:Smooth shifting, good fork/shocks, comfortable grips/brake levers.
Weaknesses:Brake pads
Similar Products Used:None
Bike Setup:Stock
Bottom Line:The only problem with the bike is that the brake pads are not meant for riding on mountains or downhill. I routinely ride up Mission Peak (2517 ft.) When I came down the first time, the brakes lost about half their strength. The pads have melted slightly onto the disc. Now they make slippery noises when I stop. The pad material cannot be removed from the disc. This is a great bike for anyone who does not ride down long steep hills/mountains often. Anyone who is looking for an affordable, high quality bike, this is the one for you!

Strengths:The frame, brakes
Weaknesses:Gear Shirting, its a little tricky, you gotta hold it until it clicks.
Similar Products Used:2006 Hardrock,
Bike Setup:Stock, i recommend the shoxs at 6 clicks for street riding and 4 for trail riding
Bottom Line:This bike is a great all around bike, it good for the occasional jumping, or trail riding or for just going up and down the road. The Suspension is great could be a little bit stiffer but, you can always buy after market shoxs.
I recommend this bike for anyone looking for a little higher end quality(great for an occasional jumper and trail rider).

Strengths:The rear derailer and front seem pretty good and the frame is VERY VERY strong. The other things that are great are the handle bars and the specialized tires. Awesome bike!
Weaknesses:DEFENTALLY the rst forks if u are a light rider they have a terrible preload u can't even notice them go down they preload so slow. And dont even get me started with the disk brakes,im the laughing stock of my friends because they squeak so much. The seat is very hard also.

Bottom Line:the bike is awesome but the forks......I would suggest this bike for a experienced beginner or for a trials freestyler. The brakes grab very very good so its nice for flyin down hills, has great control and the bike is an overall great bike, except for the forks lol but yes i would suggest this bike for many people and if you are a serious xc rider then upgrade to the mz3 fork. Strengths:bomp proof frame, decent stock components for a $500-600 bike.
Weaknesses:none
Bike Setup:hardrock comp disc, fox vanilla rlc fork, truvativ hussefelf bars and stem, sram shifters, shimano derailers, sun rims, wtb speed 5 saddle, primo pedals, odi lock on grips, avid juicy 5 disc
Bottom Line:awesome bike for any one looking at getting into mtb. frame is super strong, the stock components are'nt the best but for $600 thats what you get. I am 6'3" 230# and beat the crap out of my bike and the only thing that has given up on me is my stock wheel bearings, took back to the shop and they upgraded my rims to sun single track for free. the stock rst fork is pretty worthless too, but it works. This bike has taken me down downieville a few times with no problems (not bad for a stock hardtail). overall this bike is a great bike if your planning on upgrading your parts over time.

Bottom Line:a good bike for the price.(try to get one on sale) desent componets, ok brakes. the fork that came on it was good but i wasnt smart becuase i thought it was to stiff so i took a spring out and messed up the valves and couldnt put it back in, i could bottem it our on flat which was bad. then when i bought a new fork for my softtail, i put the one fromthat on it and it was o.k. overall its a nice bike and can be used to get around town, dirtjump, urban asult and trail ride, for some of these it needs mods though works welll and its reliable. very predicatable and dont fall at all with it.

Weaknesses:Shifting, Bottom bracket, cranks
Similar Products Used:Nope
Bike Setup:Stock 2005 model except for new tires and pedals.
Bottom Line:This is my first mountain bike. I've crashed it a lot and put it through lots of nonsmooth riding and it has held up well.

The bike is very comfortable. Not only do I use it for trail riding but I commute about 10mi each day with it. I find this to be a very reliable machine.

I have been told that the geometry of the frame has lots of influence from dirt jumping style bikes. I don't do any dirt jumping but I feel very comfortable on the decents.

The problems that I've had is that the square tapered bottom bracket has worn out and now the cranks come loose every ~50 miles. Also, I've had problems with shifting.

Favorite Trail:Camp Camfield XC Trail
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $540.00
Purchased At:Spin City-Decatur, IL
Strengths:Overall a great package value. Great Frame and fork combo. Avid brakes are solid and are almost like ABS on a car...they do not lock up and this keeps you true on loose terrain. Bike rides well on all types of terrain. Good graphics and overall component package for the price. Very stiff frame that helps with reliable riding. Gears, fork, brakes and rims are solid.
Weaknesses:I have only owned the bike for about two months, however, I have had problems with the Shimano cranks. They have loosened on hard rides and I needed to keep tightening the bolts. The cranks would loosen and really start crackling and creaking. A real bummer on 6 AM rides through the woods when it is real quiet and you want to see some animals. I have the bike at Spin City bike shop now and have them replacing the cranks with some Race Face Downhill cranks that should be beefier. I weigh 235 and I'm hard on parts, however, I am dissapointed in the Shimano crank perfomance so early. I was not happy about needing to upgrade so soon.
Similar Products Used:Old school Trek 6000 from the 80's, Trek 7000, and just sold a Schwinn Mesa with upgrades.
Bike Setup:Stock-Except for a stem upgrade to a longer neck Specialized 4 bolt and the Race Face cranks that the shop is putting on for me today. I added some Profile bar ends and a split gel seat. The seat is heavier, but worth it on rough trials.
Bottom Line:A rock solid package if you are getting into some XC on a budget. I have my first novice race coming up in Sept. and I feel very confident in the bike and it's performance. The frame is stiff, the geometry is great, the A1 Aluminum tubes are massive and look great...I chose the Hard Rock over the Rockhopper because I liked the frame better, good brakes for stock, the stock fork works great for what I'm using it for, rims and tires are nice looking and perform great. I will rec. this bike for anyone wanting a hard tail rig that is a great all around product.

Strengths:Indestructable, shifting components, tires
Weaknesses:PLASTIC BOTTOM BRACKET? WHAT? Ball Bearing Avid Breaks, RST Fork
Similar Products Used:The '04 Hardrock Comp Disk
Bike Setup:Time Z Control Pedals, '06 Manitou Minute 3:00 Fork
Bottom Line:The bottom line is this bike isn't as good as my '04 model (which was stolen). I put a beating on the '04, never cleaned it, left it out in ice and snow, and never showed it any love; but it was great. It survived everything I put it through. The same cannot be said for the '07. The frame is still similar (it will probably never die), but most of the components leave a lot to be desired. Shifting on this is sweet, but that's only when the poorly engineered *plastic* bottom bracket doesn't break when a rock hits it. Don't think it happens too often? It's happened to me twice in 3.5 months (on the Greenbelt and Terlingua). Specialized needs to get their act together. Also, the brakes are complete trash (at least the ones I got). They're so bad Bike sport shop replaced one and I'm about to ask if they'll replace the other. The problem is they squeak and don't hold the pad in place correctly, now I have to put electrical tape around the pads (and am the laughing stock of my riding buds). Also, the cassette and cogs are quite mediocre. Replacing the fork was a huge bonus. To be honest, I'm pretty dissatisfied with the quality of this beast, but I may have just gotten lemon.

Buy this bike if you like to ride off road or some street stuff, but nothing too crazy. Don't buy this bike if you really want to do some cool off road stuff.

Strengths:The frame is a beast! It handled everything I handed it, which wasn't anything more than 3 or 4 foot city concrete drops and some trail jumps.
Weaknesses:The componetry isn't the greatest... If you know how to tune a deralliur (very easy) and dont mind doing it several times a year, its a great bike.

Bottom Line:The bottom line is BUY AN EXPENSIVE U-LOCK AND LOCK IT UP WHEREVER YOU GO!! Mine got stolen in March 07.. It was locked with a cable lock... If you want something for the campus or city, and want the versitillity of a mountain bike for the weekends, this is the bike for you. I hear a lot of people have problems with the fork, but that's only if you drop down 15ft cliffs or 22 stair drops... and if you do that, you'd be an idiot to get a $450 hardtail. Stupid people...

Strengths:Rock solid Frame, Sweet paint job, Good gear shifting, Extremely light, XC bike but great for dirt jumping and street riding, Awsome Cable disc breaks, Good grip Pedals, Overall an awsome bike for people starting off on MTBing
It Cant take massive like 20 feet drops but i've hit 6 feet drops and no problems at all, adjustable rebound and preload.
Weaknesses:The forks get a little tense when its cold out, Preload adjust doesnt do much, Grips are only good with biking Gloves on, and the seat is a little uncomfort able (just small things) Also the forks need some working in before they work Great

Bottom Line:This Bike can do almost anything, Dirt Jumping, street, and a little XC, more of a multy purpose bike, and more begginer i recomend this bike to people that already are good at dirt jumping or street riding, but not anything over 7 feet jumps or drops, Like i said not for people who havent jumped well before but not for Pros. Make sure you get the 07' model the 05' and 06's arent as good.

Favorite Trail:The Dump
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $550.00
Purchased At:Lakeside Sports
Strengths:This bike has a very tough frame and decent fork for the price. It has a pretty smooth ride for the most part and handles well off-road. I've beaten this bike up a lot and it takes it with little or no complaint. The brakes work very well and I am satisfied with them. I ride in a lot of loose rocks and gravel and the tires that came stock did a great job of eating the trails up. This is the '05 setup with the Marzocchi M3 fork.
Weaknesses:Petals are junk. The grips aren't much better either. I always ride with gloves though so I can't say too much. I have had so much trouble with the derailleurs its not even funny. I broke my rear hangar on the first day (could happen at any time though) and nothing has improved since. The rear derailleur broke so that the adjustment screw is now useless. The crank is also crap. I apparently torqued too hard on it and wore out the end screw. I had the crank replaced after a few weeks of constant tightening.
Similar Products Used:1996 GT Timberline with Rockshox Jett fork
Bike Setup:Mavic Crossland wheel set, clipless pedals, shifting components all XTR now. Armadillo tires haven't let me down yet.
Bottom Line:It’s a good bike from the start as long as you upgrade the pedals, but for serious riding you need to completely get new components or a new bike. It took me a while to get used to the riding position since I had been riding the older style GT but I’ve grown to like the flexibility that the new position offers. I would reccomend it to friends who are just starting out for a good light offroad bike. It isn’t the most agile bike out there but it is beefy enough to bulldoze what you can't avoid.

Strengths:Frame is mad strong, components are so so.
Weaknesses:Specialized was skimpy on the contact points. Grips, saddle, and pedals are really crappy and uncomfortable. Tires are pretty decent if you ride trails however.

Bike Setup:Sette Stumpy stem, FSA Pig DH Pro headset, Azonic doublewall riser handlebars, Maxxis HOly roller tires, kenda DH tubes, Sun Ringle Zuzu pedals, Lizard skins north shore lock on grips, Cane Creek Thudbuster ST seatpost
Bottom Line:I roll on city streets most of the time so I've just upgraded the comfort parts of the rig. I'm in the process of converting it into an urban assault bike. I recommend upgrading everything but the frame however because the components are pretty cheap. Value wise this bike is a steal. After riding this bike and then riding any other XC hardtail afterwards, other bikes just don't feel nearly as well put together as the Hardrock.

Strengths:Its a great overall bike. I ride with kids who have cannondale prophets, specialized bighits, and Kona stinkys, and I can keep up generally. (with exception of downhill) The Ditchwitch rims are great. I live in the northeast where our trails are known for being VERY rocky. So far these are still about 95% in true. And I ride about 3 days a week for about 15 miles a time. The frame is strong. And cheap price. Good value overall.
Weaknesses:The fork is not the greatest. I can only get it to contract about half way of the total amount of travel. But that's what you get for a cheap Marzocchi. The brake pads rub against the rotour often and need frequent tune up. Or else the wheels basically have trouble spinning. I suggest putting a bashguard on this too. I bent my third chaing ring terribly. I probably shouldn't have gone biking in the near pitch black after a rain storm =)
I also recieved a flat, but that was no big deal to fix.
Similar Products Used:Trek 820 and other friends bikes.
Bike Setup:Stock components at the moment.
Bottom Line:Great value. I think this bike should be categorized in the downhill section or at least all mountain.(if there is one) I make it down technical downhills with not TOO much trouble. If you are looking for a cheap bike that wont slow you down, this is a good choice. Trust me, I did my fair share of browsing at reviews and various bikes. And after all of it, I realized that this is one of the better valued hardtails on the market.

Strengths:The frame is extremely tough. The wheels are strong enough to withstand as much as you can dish out and the brakes stop the bike on a dime. The fork has lots of smooth travel. The stock tires are great. It is fun to ride and handles great.
Weaknesses:The derailleurs (Shimano Alivio) shift slowly and have a hard time shifting under power. The front derailleur is easily damaged. The frame flexes enough in the rear to cause the brake rotors to rub on the pads when cornering hard.
Similar Products Used:2003 Specialized FSR XC Pro.

Bottom Line:The 2005 Hardrock Comp is a great beginner's mountain bike. It is tough and has great brakes. The derailleurs are the bike's largest weakpoint but Specialized has remedied this with the Sram drivetrain on the 2006 models. This bike is more suited for tough trail riding than XC due to its weight.

Strengths:Awesome frame. Im a 250lb guy and the frame is sturdy and dependable. Sun's DitchWitch wheels are beefy but also light. SRAM rear derailleur performs great.

Similar Products Used:Giant Rincon

Bottom Line:The bike is awesome but I have a few gripes. The chain is cheap and unreliable. I was climbing a hill on my first ride with this bike and the chain broke in mid-stride. I popped 2 links on the chain and broke the rear derailleur (drop-out). I upgraded the pedals to Shimano Clipless. The saddle is a bit hard on long rides. I will change the saddle, once I find one that I like. I also changed the stem. The disc brakes are working great. Overall this is a great bike for the price.

Strengths:The Hardrock Comp Disc is a solid bike all around. The SRAM shifters were giving me hell in the beginning and a week after purchasing my bike, I was informed by the bike shop that the shifters were recalled by Specialized. The shop replaced them and now it's smooth sailing. FYI- bikers make sure to check with either Specialized or your local bike shop on the shifter recall for all Hardrock 06’ models. Aside from that minor problem, I have no complaints. I've taken on some challenging trails and the Hardrock handled pretty well-it does take a while to get use to though. Make sure you have your bike serviced and adjusted after the 3rd or 4th ride-I recommend it. Overall, the frame is tough, the brakes provide good stopping-power (especially for a 210 lb. dude like me), and the bike feels like it can handle a good beating. This bike is perfect for the individual getting his or her feet wet in the mountain bike scene.
Weaknesses:The Hardrock Comp Disc can definitely use a saddle upgrade and better gripping pedals.
Similar Products Used:Trek Moutain Bike years ago (don't remember model number)
Bike Setup:A1 frame, SRAM shifters & derailleur, Mazocchi MZ-3 fork, Hayes disc brakes
Bottom Line:Specialized created a great starter's bike with the potential to upgrade. The bike looks cool in the blue and it definitely looks intimidating. Handling is rock-solid and the Hardrock will give you a good sense of security when riding. I recommend it to anyone who is thinking of getting their first mountain bike or returning from cycling hiatus.

Bottom Line:The frame simply rocks. Everything is just so much smoother than any bike near its pricepoint I've tried. The drivetrain shifts very smoothly once the cables have settled down, great traction with the 2.3" knobbies. The only gripe I have with this bike is the HMX 2's that come stock. Everything else about the bike seems high-end except the brakes, although Shimano hydros fix the problem nicely *evil grin*. Strengths:Massive bicycle frame of A1 alu that can resist to important abuse. Very good bike for the price I paid. The derailleurs that come with it are a very good upgrade (from shimano to sram). with some small upgrades, you can go far with that thing. the 24 speeds shift perfectly and there is no ghost shifting with these derrailleurs components.
Weaknesses:a very heavy bike because of the basic components for a xc hardtail. The fork is very weak. It is not flawless and it is very heavy for a cross country fork.

Bottom Line:Value wise, this is the best deal I found for a Hardrock Comp disc 2004 end of season. This is my first real bike and its been holding up very well. Currently have about 900km (trail only) and nothing has broken yet. I don't do drops more than 2 ft so I cant comment on how tough the frame is. The Marzocchi MZ comp is decent and I've noticed it on some bikes up to $800. Specialized brand tires are good and hold a line pretty well. Tektro disc brakes are so-so. Paint job is horrible!! I have the blue version and the paint chips VERY VERY easily from pebbles that kick up from my front tire. I switched out the mobius stem that was really bulky and made me sit too upright. The position on the bike is setup so you are really high/upright. The bike is not light, but what do you expect for $420 or $500 CND. Great starter bike to see if you like the sport. I'll be keeping it but upgrading to a giant trance.

Strengths:Great Value for the money. Stock wheels are much stronger than I expected. Super strong frame, but reasonably light. Handling is fantastic. I rode BMX as a kid and wanted an agile bike. The Hardrock is no BMX bike, but compared to the other bikes I tested it's very agile.
Weaknesses:Like most people I couldn't handle the seat; and switched to a Kona platform pedal before I left the bike shop. From the one time I rode without gloves I have to reiterate what others said agout the grips not being great, with gloves they're fine.
Similar Products Used:Wal-Mart bikes, this is my first real Mountain bike. I test rode a bunch of other bikes, but don't think I can give any fair comparison.
Bike Setup:Kona Pedals, White Brothers air suspension seat post.
Bottom Line:I bought this as a first bike too see if I really wanted to be into mountain biking at 40 years old. I'm totally sold now and will be buying a FS bike in the near future. I've put over 300 hard trail miles on this bike. The only thing that has gone wrong with this bike is I managed to break a tooth off of the small chain ring.

If your just starting out and don't want to break the bank, "giving it a try", this is the bike to start with. Given the price I have no complaints about the bike. I've pretty much brutalized the bike about as much as a 40 year old could, I weigh 210 pounds, and when you live accross the road from the tabaguache trail 20 to 30 - 1 to 3 foot drops on every ride is the norm. My pedals look like someone spent an hour beating on them with a hammer from bouncing off the rocks, but the bike still rides just like new. I have been worried about the chain from reading other reviews but so far it's held up.

I highly recommend this bike as a first bike to test out the mountain biking hobby and figure out if you want to continue. It's a great all around bike for testing the waters. The only reason I'm not giving it a 5 overall rating is the seat, and grips could be better without any significant cost increase IMO.

Strengths:Good overall value - it's a hardtail with sweet aluminum frame that can take a punch, decent fork that you can rely on (unless you do 12 ft drops), quality rims (mine are still true for the most part), good seat, and sweet paintjob.
Weaknesses:I still can't believe that Specialized would put on those horrible grips on that bike - you can't get a good grip on them with bare hands even if your life depended on it. Also, pedals should be changed unless you like when your feet slip. Disk brakes have good stopping power but mine are somewhat deformed so there's periodic squiking that annoys the hell out of me. The tires are decent but more traction wouldn't hurt. Also, on the bottom of the frame cables are held by a plastic piece that seems a bit too fragile to me.
Similar Products Used:Hardrock is the only one that counts
Bike Setup:Stock except for diamondback platform pedals and some slime in those tubes. Currently, I'm looking for a frame cover (something like lizard skin) to stop that awful noise that the chain makes when you go down some rocks or jumps. I'll probably buy some new grips if I forget my gloves one more time.
Bottom Line:Since I've bought this bike I rode it through the water, hit some rocks, went down some hills while passing some sissy dudes in full gear, riding expensive bikes. I feel comfortable riding it on rough trails with no protection, since it's so forgiving and easily controlled. It's an awesome bike that comes with nice equipment for the money. Hardrock a tough racing machine but I wouldn't get it if you are a huge downhill fan - there are better bikes for that. Most of the essential components have performed pretty well for me but some equipment should be changed out (like pedals and grips). In my opinion the specialized hardrock comp disk is the best money pick from the Hardrock line because it has most of the equipment as the Pro does and has a better fork than lower models.

I'm 6'5" 260 pounds and I take this bike down some crazy stuff. If you are looking for a good bike to start off with you can't do any better that this bike. I do have to agree that the pedals, and the brakes really suck, but the addition of the avid ball bearing make it perfect. I also broke the stock chain twice before upgrading, but i think that has to do with my size. I defetly would recomend this bike to anybody wanting to get into the sport.

Bike Setup:Manitou Black Elite, New seat, New pedals, 2.4" tires, rhynolite rims/ deore hubs.
Bottom Line:It is a sweet bike and took A LOT of my abuse before i had to start replacong stuff. I had to replace the fork after about 6 mths of riding because i wrecked on a 12 foot drop. If i hadnt wrecked, im sure the fork would still be on the bike. The fork took some mad abuse (8 ft drops) about 12+ times a week for thbe life of it, so you know itll stand up to a lot. The guys at Marzocci were cool and offered me a product replacement-(50% off of a Dirt Jumper III) The derailuer hanger got bent so i had to replace it after about 6 mths as well. the brakes arent too bad, as long as you clean them and keep them properly adjusted. The same can be said about the derailuer- if it doesnt shift, it is because A) it needs adjustment because the cables have streched or B) it needs to be tuned up. The rims lasted me a year. I decided to replace em because i had figured it was about time for them to break. I have landed 6+ft drops and they stayed true. This is an awesome bike, as it helps me to keep up with guys on full suspension DH bikes.

My bike shop offers free tune ups for life of the bike, and have only taken it back once for one. Never bottomed out the front fork, and never had trouble climbing. All in all this is a great bike for the money. If your a beginner and want a sturdy bike that will grow with you and handle some light jumps and falls this is the bike for you. Pro's might be a little dissapointed with its weight and mediocre parts but that's why you buy much better bikes at that level. When I get better I'll probably invest in something extremely nice, but till then I still beat the pants off of my friends with $1500.00 bikes.

Strengths:The Frame is very strong. Good welds, nice thick tubing. The rims aren't to bad either for a $500 bike. The cranks are burly, although I bent the spindle on the third ride.
Weaknesses:The bent spindle (crappy square taper bb's), the tire compound is a bit soft and the pedals just suck @ss, there's no nice way to put it.
Similar Products Used:Tried low-end Treks, Raleigh, Gary Fisher, Kona, and other Specialized bikes...I own a Norco Team NS and a Rampage.
Bike Setup:I don't own it, my step-brother does....I have ridden it a number of times though.
Bottom Line:First off, I have to get this out of the way. In other reviews, there are owners whining about the chain rubbing on the front derailleur or the disk brakes squealing. Shut the hell up. Whine about the bolts stripping, or the tires having a weak sidewall. Something a tad more important. Disk brakes squeal, that is their nature so deal with it. When you have more the 14 speeds, the chain is gonna rub against the front derailleur from being pulled over in large gear ratios.
Now that my griping is out of the way.....
The frame is very strong, and the wheels have been built very nicely. The tires aren't the best choice though, and my step-brother instantly upgraded to 2.3" Nokian Gazzoladi tires. He also bought a .243 saddle to replace that peice of crap that was on there. The combination bl/shifters is a stupid idea for a few reasons. First off, they cannot be adjusted to different distances from the grips. thats makes for an uncomfortable hand position.
Also, if you break part of the internals you are screwed like a wet pootch. Gotta buy a whole new assembly, no repairs here. Get seperate shifter and brake pods.
The forks are not suited for the frame. If you look on the Marzocchi website, those coil forks are intended for XC/Marathon use. And they only have 100mm of travel. A much much better choice would've been a DJ3 or even a Sherman. Anyhow, the cranks and the BB are very high quality for this bike. They aren't as good as my Kona Buldge cranks on my DH bike, but they are quite good for a $500 bike.
The very bottom line is this...this bike is very appealing because of it's price. It is a good buy for the novice rider or even first time biker. It is definately not made for comfort riding, it is somewhat suitable for mild DJ/urban riding. Buy this bike, but remember one thing....70% of the price of this bike is the frame. If you buy this bike, I would definatly consider some Wellgo BMX pedals and beefier tires. If you have the money, some low-end hydraulic disk brakes (like Magura) would be great. Don't bother with Hayes or Hope, they cost more than the bike. The componentry on this bike would only get 2 flamin' chilies....but the strong frame and Specialized's customer services brings the value and the overall way up.

Weaknesses:Disk brakes suck 2 death if you get any kind of cleaner on them, common since, but when your trying to clean your tires, be carefull cause you'll have to brake like crap to get tire cleaner off it. Weaknesses:Pedals need changing, feet keep slipping off. Crank has a squeak when working it hard. Constant adjustments to driveline.

Bottom Line:Believe you cannot find a better bike for the price if going off-road. Blacktop riding is not the best, but look at the stock tires and you should realize they were made for dirt. The driveline seems lacking, so I would recommend upgrades in that department (as I will be upgrading next season). I have the 15" frame and get a lot of looks and comments, it looks like twice the money. Lastly, if you like stunts, this one does wheelies extremely easy. Even though it may need a couple adjustments to be perfect, I am giving this one a 5 and a 5. The average person will love it!

Bike Setup:Marzocchi MX Pro w/ETA (105mm), Chris King head set, WTB Rocket V Stealth saddle, WTB dual comp grips, WTB Mutano Raptor tires. Everything else is currently stock.
Bottom Line:I was initially very impressed with this bike. The reviews I'd read hear were a major deciding factor in my purchasing it as well. I am just getting back into the sport after an injury/surgery and wanted a decent "starter" bike. After three months of riding though I can't help but wonder if I bought the same bike as all of the other reviewers! The performance of this bike is not up to par (IMO) with the majority of reviews here so be careful in your selection. Also, do not listen to your Specialized dealer/sales person or the advertisements from Specialized about this bike. It is not an aggressive "do all" machine for the budget conscious. It is a beefy looking commuter bike that can handle some dirt roads/groomed trails if need be.

I own the 19" 04 HR Comp w/disc and weigh 185lbs. I've never done anything with the bike but some surface street commuting and moderate XC. No big drops, big jumps, stunts, hucks, etc... Just some good 'ol single track. I've put approximately 500mi on the bike to date. I'll break things down in the order of their various states of "breaking" over the three months I've had it:

The Marzocchi MZ Comp fork was the first thing on the bike to give me trouble. It had a lot of flex from the get-go and scared the shiznit out of me on my first DH run. It then developed a frightening "vibration" while braking. The stanchion was actually hitting the inner walls of the slider on the brake side. I called Marzocchi and up-graded the fork to an MX Pro w/ETA (I'm very happy with it). The folks at Marzocchi informed me that this particular fork is not intended for XC or DH use and is being "mis-marketed" by Specialized.

The Cane Creek Ahead Set was also a little too "loose" for my liking. I had to tighten it after every trail ride and have now swapped it out for a CK. Tightened it once (after the first few miles) and it's good to go.

The drive-train components are "entry level" but I knew that going in. Even being easy on them though they are not acceptable in their performance (ghost shifts, constant adjustments, etc...) and I'm looking into up-grading the entire drive-train to SRAM. I'm taking it down today to get a front derailleur that actually works (which is my biggest gripe). The crank set is decent but wasn't torqued properly by the LBS where I bought it. I had to do it myself. I got two full turns out of a few of my chain ring bolts as well.

The Tektro disc brakes are actually pretty good but need to be adjusted far too much in order to perform well. Long descents are a little hard on the front brake and it tends to loose grip factor way too soon. I don't like having to rely so much on the back as I try to keep my skids down to a minimum. I also can't find replacement pads for them anywhere. They will be switched to Avid mechs in the near future.

So far the wheels/hubs seem to be holding up!

I'm very happy with the frame. It fits my body better then any hard-tail I've ever ridden which is why I'm keeping the bike. It's relatively light and strong making for a very good platform for up-grades. I replaced the saddle, tires, grips, and added toe clips (preference). Other things I want to do out of preference would be to add new bars, stem, and seat post to save some weight. All in all I'm not too unhappy. I wish that I had just bought the frame though after what it's cost me to fix things in the short amount of time I've had the bike. I'm giving a total of 3x3 chillies due to the cost of repairs and the "mis-marketing" from Specialized.

Weaknesses:Bottom bracket, it is falling apart on me already! Upgrade soon after purchase. breaks should be tighter but thats not a problem really. Could definately use a bashgurd but thats no problem either
Similar Products Used:Kona Scrap
Bike Setup:Dragon Hyde( is that even a mod?!)
blackshire xc guard
Bottom Line:This is a great begginer- amateur bike that has the best bang for the buck on the market.

If you like dirt and cross country this is your bike because it has a dirt frame, which is truly indestructable, but enduro tires and is a 24 speed (if you are aimed towards dirt then make sure you get a bashgurd instead of the third gear)

Weaknesses:Front Derailleur, Pedals
Similar Products Used:2001 Hardrock
Bike Setup:Mostly Stock, Deore Front Derailleur, New Pedals, Two NitetRider Flamethrower Headlights, Cateye Taillight, Topeak Defender Front and Rear Mudguards
Bottom Line:This bike is awesome. I weigh almost 220 lbs and the frame is perfect for me, it is bulletproof. I have taken 5 foot drops and the front fork refuses to bottom out. Brakes are good for quick stops but they really shine on the downhill trails. The fork is great, it doesn't bob excessivley when pedaling and soaks up small and large bumps with ease. The main reason I like this bike so much is that it is icredibly capable. I ride it to school everyday and it is amazingly comfortable. It can also take a lot of abuse on the trail. Plus the bike looks aggressive. People in cars I ride by always take a second look because it looks so much like a Dirtbike. Everybody at school loves it too. This bike isn't cheap so if you plan on only using it in the city it isn't for you. It also does grab a lot of attention so the firs accessory to buy is a lock. Highly recommended for city/trail riders.

Strengths:A lot of these parts are high end. The fork is great, so is the frame, when I dialed the brakes in better the were awesome.
Weaknesses:I've had 3 flats now in the rear, the left crank dropped a couple of times (solved problem and they're great now), the pedals suck crap, busted one first week.
Similar Products Used:none
Bike Setup:stock except pedals and a couple of tubes
Bottom Line:I submitted an earlier review and wanted to compare it to now. This bike is perfect for a 14 year old who likes tougher trails. It's great for the cost so if you're a kid looking for a cheap, nice bike, don't hesitate. I don't recomend it for harsh drops and your black-diamond trail, but it eats up technical xc.

Weaknesses:huge stem, weak front derailer

Bottom Line:I've only had mine a bit but seems real strong so far. Price listed is canadian. The bike seems real good but i have had limited time on the trail. The front brake is squeaking allready and the front derailer is a little tough(acera)and the stem is massive, it may need to be swapped out. Mine is 19 inch and is still incredibly light for the size of the frame, which may be because of the light rims. I think the value is the best part of the bike, as overall it is strong/light/has good components for the money.

Bottom Line:Awesome bike for the price. The disc brakes are great, compared to center-pull and v-brake bikes that i've rode. No matter what you're riding in, no squealing/scratching/scraping sounds. They never let up, (even though I havent tested them on strictly downhill courses yet). A little on the heavy side, but not bad. Good platform to upgrade components.

Strengths:Killer looks, strong frame and components (esp. for the price). MZ Comp fork eats everything I have thrown at it. Keep in mind, this is not a freeride bike.
Weaknesses:Pedals. Cruddy, cruddy pedals. Gotta buy clips.
Similar Products Used:Trek 4300
Bike Setup:Stock outside of added A1 Specialized Dirt Rodz Bar Ends for addtl. climb power. Will be putting toe clips on this. Pedals without them suck hard, slip constantly.
Bottom Line:This bike is great for XC, minus the pedals which should be replaced or clipped. Bar ends won't hurt either. Ride this if you are looking for an excellent value that can handle pretty much all the singletrack you can throw at it. Don't ride it if you are pulling insane dropoffs. Go get a Demo 9 for that. Overall, excellent bike clear down to the beautiful welds on the frame.

Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month

Strengths:Solid frame, the fork is amazing and tackles everything from cobble stones to exposed roots like a cadillac.
Weaknesses:The tires are great for XC, but really stink in the city. Consider getting smoother 2.0 tires or road slicks for any road riding. The tektro brakes perform OK, but I think they'll be better once I break them in. They aren't that grippy so far. I added toe clips to the pedals, but I still don't like them. Get better pedals. The front Acera derailleur sucks and won't shift smoothly at all. Upgrade to at least an LX. I never tried the rear Alivio derailleur becuase I had the shop change it to XT when I bought it. The bike is a bit on the heavy side, but that in a way gives it a smoother ride over the road and trail.
Similar Products Used:Raleigh M40
Bike Setup:Stick, except for XT rear derailleur and toe clips. Will change front derailleur to XT and possibly change the shift/brake combined levers to Deore or LX for smoother response.
Bottom Line:This is a great bike for the money, but it could use a few upgrades to make it better. Consider getting the '04 Hardrock Pro Disc instead for better discs and derailleurs.

Bottom Line:Needed a value priced bike, this was it. Strong frame and rims. Forks are smooth (after the break-in period) Disk breaks good so far. Have not had any problems with the crank as other have reported. Done some 2-3ft. drops and feels great although it seems to have a higher than normal center of gravity. Strengths:The frame looks killer and is as tough as nails. Everyone is in awe on how my big my tires are. This bike just looks cool, rides great and isn't a kids bike. The MZ Comp is awesome. The Brakes stop me going down the steepest of hills with no problems, although I would have paid the extra $$ for Shimano or Hayes. The Alivio is much better than I thought. It is a very comfortable ride as well.
Weaknesses:The front disc squeaks a little. Squeaks just annoy me. I expect that though with a company called "tektro" It is the first time I've had disc brakes though, so I'm sure I'll figure them out soon.

Bottom Line:I'm 6'4" 220 lbs and this bike is great for me. Buy this bike if you are a bigger and stronger rider. The frame and components are holding up great. If you aren't going to race, buy this bike. You'll get plenty of looks of people wishin they had a nice ride. It is fast, looks great (I love that blue), just plain makes you want to ride everywhere, and is more reliable than a new Toyota. Not bad for a bike under 500.

Bottom Line:Just an update to my previous review --

My friend who bought the exact same bike completely demolished two bottom brackets, after the first one was replaced he ended up buying a brand new '04 XT crankset which is 100x better than the stock stuff.

Also, I replaced my front fork with a Noleen mega air(3lbs 3oz.) and oh my god the bike feels sooooo much lighter. The front MZ comp fork must weigh 10 friggin pounds (ok a little exadurated) but it is HEAVY!!! Replace it with a lighter fork -- and add a lighter crankset and you will notice a HUGE difference in weight, overall. Keep in mind it is a XC fork and is not made for drops. The stock fork will be better for that, but it kinda feels like a pogo stick. It is very stiff though, in my opinion.

Strengths:Great frame, good rims(I have the Pro Disc version, which has sun ditch witch rims, there heavy, but I havent bent them yet which is cool) travel on forks, grips, tires, disc brakes(not the particular units, but the concept), price, great all around bike, looks freakin awsome with the dark grey and black flame paint job!
Weaknesses:weight, derailleurs, seatpost(stripped the angle mount), brake performance(If not adjusted properly), steering(forks twist and flex under alot of stress), AND THAT FREAKIN CRAPPY CRANKSET AND BOTTOM BRACKET!
Similar Products Used:raleigh m-80, numerous bmx bikes
Bike Setup:stock(until I get some money). had a topeak superlight front fender(until it broke in a highspeed crash), lizard skin carbon fiber frameguard, oh, and i modded the brakes :)
Bottom Line:This is a great do everything bike. and I mean everything! I've done everything from xc to urban assult/trials to taking it down a dh course a few times. the frame is super strong, its survived 5-6' drops onto concrete. I also ride about 20 mi. of single track on the weekends. It was kindof my first mountain bike in a few years, so i kinda wanted a do it all machine to figure out what I wanted to do in this sport. since I wanto go harder off road, I'm planning on getting a '04 KHS XC-504 for the trails, and modify this one strictly for campus riding. I will convert it to a single speed(for weight), get Avid cable actuated brakes, and change the front rotor to 8", get a bash guard(thank God for bashguards), and I'm also thinking of going to a rigid fork. Dont get me wrong, it comes w/ a decent fork, and I'll probably put it back on sometimes, but the whole front end twists alot when I do a nose wheelie spin around, it just kinda freaks me out, and a rigid would fix that, and save weight(stock one is like 6 lbs.). I have the pro disc version, and you can increase braking power by taking off the actuator arm(the thing down there that moves when you apply braking) and rotating its setting back counterclockwise and changing the spring position 1/2 turn, its kinda hard to explain, but you can figure it out if you want it bad enough. anyways, i ride this bike really hard, and its stood up to me this long, I would definately recommend this bike to anyone that wants to try mt biking in its various forms.

Strengths:Great component spec for the price. Great fork actually, nice frame, love the white color.
Weaknesses:Brakes suck hardcore as well as the brake/shifter levers. Unless cranks are perfectly tight, they strip like a hooker in front of bill gates. Plus, my rotor bolts were loose, my fault for not checkign tightness.
Similar Products Used:Stumpjumper from 99, 2003 P2
Bike Setup:Stock + Avid 8", ryhno lite rear rim, some equaly but more comfortable normal feeling shifter/brake levers, super wide FSA DH bar, big hit platform pedals
Bottom Line:This bike is the best bike i have ever own. I've had a Stumpjumper, BigHit SPEC and a Giant AC air light. This bike has given me minimal problems, and they were my fault (not checking bolt tightness, etc), it is extremely fun to ride, comfortable geometry for my type of riding, and pretty nice looking considering the price point. I ride it to class every day and ride it urban assault about 2-3 times a week. I just raced it XC and it did pretty well, even with a non-functioning rear brake (i dunno why, no time to check it). I'm pretty big (270 lbs) and I also ride it urban ALOT doing some hard landings from a good 3 feet as well as some 7 stairs. The fork will bottom, but everything bottoms, come on. As for upgrades, new crank arms are first, and then adding an Avid mechanical disc brake in the front did wonders for an already amazing bike. It has been the best bike i ever bought. I work at a rental shop where i got the deal and 3 of us there have the bike and we all love it. Buy it while u still can.
