Strengths:    I purchased this bike for my wife from someone on craigslist who had spray painted it and completly trashed it. The frame was still in good shape (other than the paint) as well as the XT rear derailleur, the Truvativ FireX 3.0 crankset and the BB5 mechanical disc brakes. The frame is very light and the geometry is very agressive, comfortable and inspires confidence. All REI members know their customer service is tough to beat and their products are almost always top notch. This bike is no exception.

Weaknesses:    This bike really has no weaknesses to mention considering the price point when new.

Bottom Line:
Lightweight.
Simple.
Straightforward.
REI brand / customer service.
My wife and I could not be happier with our purchase.

The forks are starting to wear out but all else is good and I was wondering what would be a good choice for new forks? I ride cross country and single track mostly.Read More »

Which 29er? Fezzari Wasatch Peak vs. Diamondback Overdrive vs. REI Ponderosa

I've got my search for 29er hardtails down to 3 options for a sub $1,000 bike- any opinions welcome. I'm currently riding a ten year old entry level hardtail 26" REI Novarra bike with Deore components. Looking to ride mostly fire roads in Marin County open space. Heil Ranch work - Ponderosa Loop

Firstly, I wanna say kudos for those volunteering their time to work on the very loose/rocky section of Ponderosa Loop. I truly appreciate there's something "new" to ride in an area with such stagnant trail development. I must ask though, what's up with the trail surface that's being put down? It ... Read More »

On the verge of buying Novara Ponderosa

I did my research on a 29er around 800-1000 with good components and found that the Ponderosa, with x7 all around, was one of the best I could find. They have it for 999 now but am waiting for the fall sale to get it around 800. Do you have any input about whether this is a good purchase or of there ... Read More »
