Strengths:    light weight and very stiff frame, better components at this price-point than comparable trek and specialized (full deore drive-train, hydraulic discs, marzocchi fork, wtb prowler mx 2.1 tires). climbs well, descends well, corners well.

Weaknesses:    stock saddle is ugly, and for me uncomfortable, but i tend to like a very narrow flat saddle. have had some problems with disc alignment, but i think thats due to abuse.

Bottom Line:
I have a 2009 model and for my money its one of the best sub $1000 hardtails on the market. I dont consider myself a great rider but i routinely blow right by guys on bikes that cost twice as much. the white frame is sexy, and i dig the indie-cred of riding a brand that most people dont recognize. this bike has taken a fair amount of abuse and been crashed pretty hard several times but it just keeps kickin. granted this is not a high-end bike, if youre looking for high-end dont buy a $900 bike, duh. but it is an extraordinary value for the money and is perfect for semi-agressive recreational XC riding.

Strengths:    Handling, Acceleration

Weaknesses:    Shimano Deore group

Bottom Line:
My first mountain bike was the Kona Shred to rip the local jumps but I eventually started riding trails despite the fact that the bike weighs more than my truck. The Shred was stolen from my back yard and I decided (through the grief) to go out and get a good entry level trail bike.

Ever since I've had the Hawk Hill, it has been a total blast. The handling with the flat bars is very responsive and crisp. Also, the bike can take off like a bat outa' hell when you lay into it. The Hayes mechanical disk brakes and the WTB MOTOraptors are nice touches. The Deore group has worked nearly flawlessly for me except the front derailleur has given me a touch of trouble.

For an into level hard tail, it doesn't get much better. The speed, handling, and respectable components will please anyone new to mountain biking.
