Strengths:    solid feel, good welds, great geometry

Weaknesses:    heavy frame(2002 steel version)

Bottom Line:
I love the bike and it fits me well(5'11" size L) but it seems to be really heavy even for a steel frame. The less than an inch of travel in the rear is great for xc trails where you would want a hardtail over a full suspension. Great bike for what I paid for it.

Strengths:    This bike is incredible! I do a lot of road biking so when I'm in the trails I like to go fast...and that's what this bike can do. Most the parts were good. But I love the way the bike handles.

Weaknesses:    Don't buy this bike thinking you're going to have a full suspension. It's really made for someone who likes hardtail but wants a little cushion. The Judy XC didn't last 30 miles on a single track trail before it started making a snapping noise. The saddle was a little to big and plush for me and the handlebars, stem, and seatpost are really nothing special.

Bottom Line:
Once I upgraded it a little I know I'll be riding this bike for a long time. It's fast, confident, and a little forgiving.

Strengths:    Stiff hard tail like acceleration, slightly more forgiving hitting the bumps in the saddle. Least expensive Soft tail you can get (if you can find a 2005).

Weaknesses:    At $769, not many except maybe a little skimping on the components.

Bottom Line:
Bike is a great frame to build up. I really like a soft tail and the best is very pricey ..( the only metal bike I would rather have is moots ~$4k). You can make this bike fairly light fairly cheaply and have a fast rider that handles better than than an aluminum hard tail.

Off the shelf the bike is ok, but, change a couple things (put a good shock on it when the RockShox Judy is unbearable) and you will have an uncommoon machine to show off.

Strengths:    Cheap way to try a quasi-full suspension. Seems to have good workmanship, as light as an average hardtail (mine is sub 24 lbs,), handles quicker than my bianchi.

Weaknesses:    Yesterday I busted a seatpost(XTR), I have never done that on a MTN. bike or a road bike. Wonder is it has something to do with the flex in the rear triangle. The rear triangle, when turning tight in a corner, feels like it wobbles at times. Does not affect the ride at all and handles well in turns.

Bottom Line:
It was fun to build up, ride and so far is well worth the money, I ride perhaps 4 time a week on the various trail systems in this area, Southeastern Wisconsin. I do mostly trail riding, not big jumps or anything like that. Who should buy/use this bike? I wish I would have had this bike when I did the WORS racing series, would be fine for a sport class rider on a budget.

Favorite Trail:   Southern Kettles

Duration Product Used:   3 months

Price Paid:    $199.00

Purchased At:   mail order

Similar Products Used:   I have used various mtn. bikes (trek, Bianchi, Specialized)as well as cyclocross bikes.

Bike Setup:   Size Large. I am 6' 2", I think I could use a large or an XL but the XL would not handle as well. The seatpost is not maxed out, maybe an inch left. I built this up with XTR drivetrain, V-breaks (and seatpost see above), Wheels XT hubs and MAvic 32 hole rims. Python tires, 8 Speed (all ya need)

Strengths:    Light and responsive frame

Weaknesses:    Avid Single Digit 3 brakes, Kenda Karma Stick E tires

Bottom Line:
I have the 2004 model, a decent bike that handles well. It's a good first mountain bike.

The soft tail shock is nice, it smooths out the bumps but doesn't give you "real" dual suspension performance. I was a bit leery about the flex on the chromoly rear but KHS guarentees the rear for 25 years, and the aluminum front triangle for only 3 years.

The Avid Single Digit 3 rim brakes are weak and the Kenda Karma Stick E tires are very fast rolling but also prone to flats.
