Strengths: Lightweight bike most of the components are good.Weaknesses: The crankset has a cheap one piece chain ring set and older models didn't have a chain guard but my 8 year old daughter hasn't had any problems.Bottom Line: Solid bike for pre teens and maybe up to mid teens. It has a good suspension fork for kids. Avid style V brakes will stop on a dime. Parents may want to adjust them down on the front to keep the kids from flipping. The gear range is good, all though the high gear on the cog could be an 11 or 12 tooth for the flat ground but it does limit the speed for younger riders. The grip shifters can be a bit hard going from the middle ring to the outer ring I just melt some candle wax over the cable guide under the bottom bracket when it starts getting hard to shift up. Gore cables would probably fix that also.
Overall this is a great way to get your kids into mountain biking The price may scare off some but I see it as an investment. You could buy cheaper big box store bikes that can be double the weight and have cheap parts or buy a solid trail ready bike that will keep them wanting to go out and ride and will be a great hand me down to younger siblings. My daughter seems to have a life long passion for riding developing.
