Strengths:    MSRP below $200

Weaknesses:    Extremely heavy steel framed bike with some adult sized components and gear shift that my son was unable to move even when the bike was stationary

Bottom Line:
My son is five years old, and can ride the 20" Fuji Dynamite aluminium kids mountain bike that we finally settled on after test riding several bikes. In our testing of various 20" mountain bikes some were better than others, but the Diamondback Cobra stood out for two reasons: The steel frame makes it significantly heavier than its competition, which have aluminium frames, and it's shifter is incredible difficult to use.

The Diamondback Lustre and Diamondback Octane are both 20" bikes with aluminium frames, but I was not able to find any of those locally so that my son could try them to find out if the shifting on either of those was easier.

If your son/daughter needs to handle a bike that's more than half their body weight, with shifters they can't be expected to use while riding, it's going to increase the chance of them getting discouraged and frustrated.

Make sure you put your child on the bike for a test ride before you buy them a bike. I personally found it to be worth the extra money to find a model with a good build that was reasonably lightweight, with gears he can use.
