The original freeride bike manifests in 2010 as one of the most refined and perfected freeride bikes on the market. Beautifully plush suspension, tough as nails frame and durable, well-priced components, and you have the classic freeride experience Kona is famous for. Step into the big travel world with confidence, with a freeride package that will hold up longer than both your legs and your lungs.
bought a 2005 stinky brand new and i still have it. had it for 7 years and still feels new and no complaints when it comes to freeride/DH. people told me stinky was good for beginners but this is and will be plenty enough for me.
If your starting downhill or hitting big jumps, this is the bike for you. It is really forgiving and will take everything you throw at it. Super plush, really smooth, takes bumps well. Great starter to intermediate bike because its strong and if you crash, it WONT break.

Strengths: Solid suspension, never failed me, although I only use a few times a month. Well made. The brakes are good.
Weaknesses: Very heavy for road riding, not at all suitable, only tried once but it was mentally difficult. But I have Boardman roadbike so I use that anyway
Bottom Line:
I don't know much about bikes, I just ride them and I don't really know how much this bike costs new but for the price I bought it it is great.
Similar Products Used: I only have mountain bikes and road bikes, not full suspension ones except this so none are really similar
Bike Setup: Standard

Strengths: Solid bike, great amount of travel, easy to tune, Bomb proof, decent groupset and parts for cash paid, good brakes on original build, can ride this anywhere thats not got an incline upwards... get off to push up hill
Weaknesses: a little heavy, standard rear shock spring on 09 model is a bit soft if you're a fat guy,
Bottom Line:
Great bike for anyone wanting to get into freeride / downhill and have fun, easy to adjust the Kona recommended build parts, cheap and absolutley bomb proof, I've had some big crashes on mine and the worst damage I've done was a small scratch on the paint on the forks, which isn't bad considering my body armour got destroyed by the same accident.
Bike Setup: Standard loadout and groupsets for 09 stinky as specified by Kona, Hayes stroker 8in disc front and rear, Maxxis minion DH tyres, Shimano deore rear derail, race face cranks and BB,

Strengths: Nuke Proof, Very low center of balance feeling, huge brakes
Weaknesses: not the best bike for road riding, VERY heavy
Bottom Line:
by far the best bike ive had so far (mountain that is) i picked it up for only $600 and the previous owner abused it pretty bad. but it still works like new. ive had other riders that have bikes that cost twice as much, complement me on how forgiving it is. the hubs are almost shot mostly from the last owner ( it was missing half the bearings and had broken axles) and that might be my next upgrade. WARNING! the factory brakes use DOT3 NOT mineral oil. the last owner told me that and i hosed up the brakes, so i upgraded those. Over all, this bike will take anything you throw at it and BEGG for more

Strengths: Super Tough Frame, DOPE brake system!, New longer swingarm work really well, no flex or bending in the frame, just change springs out (550 lb vs 350lb) and you can go from DH race bike to a Freeride bike. 1.5 headset is rock solid, will take any drop you throw at it, great balance in the air too. Little maintanance required!!!!
Graham Agassiz has one.
Weaknesses: A little heavy for urban Freeride, stock BB and HS suck, go for a King.
Bottom Line:
The most reliable bike ive ever owned, it will go thru 10 DH races with almost no maintanance, the frame is super tough, and you can race on sunday and go FR on monday. I used this bike on the 2010 US open in NJ and its a great bike, never broke down unlike my Demo 8. It will take anything you throw at it, 8ft concrete pancake drops to 40ft jumps easily. Very stable on those big jumps as well as high speeds. Easy to throw around for backflips and 360's. I love this bike. Its a little heavy for urban Freeride and those stationary moves but if you have enough power it can be done.

Strengths: Amazing looks,High quality parts from the factory. Smooth shifting, awesome balance points. Stiff suspension i perfer. Easyier to bunny hop.
Weaknesses: I wouldnt really call it a weakness, but it is heavy, and sometimes on flat ground after a couple miles its hard to keep a decent cruise pace.
Bottom Line:
I bought this bike off ebay,
it came in great condition, i took it to Jisan Downhill park in S. Korea the next day and sessioned the bike all day and hard as hell. Nothing ever faltered. Bike handled amazing, took boulders, 20ft jumps, 30+ mph decents over ruff ditches etc.. Handled technical sections on the Expert/Expert trail with a breeze. Brakes never faded. Bike is perfect!
I love my Kona Stinky!

Strengths: Frame design, not too heavy but doesnt dent and its pretty strong. Decent stock componentry (though i built mine up from the frame only) The Geometry is amazing
Weaknesses: none, except the crappy marzocchi pieces of **** which come stock on it, and its not too great to pedal (but few dh/fr bikes are to be honest!)
Bottom Line:
This is an amazing bike, and it really is unbeatable in price! It rides so nicely with aftermarket forks (the drop offs are bollocks), and the brakes are crappy as stock as well, but the frame is a great frame to build upon!
Strengths: I upgraded the stock shock for the Roco TST R, but I am finding the shock is not holding its air pressure after a few days. No fault to the bike.
Weaknesses: A little heavy and bulky in tight trails. I find the chain slap on the frame annoying and find that it binds in the crank case when it comes off.
Bottom Line:
I find that this bike is great for a little cross country too. It's heavy on the uphills but still chugs along well. Very fluid ride and smooth on the drops.

Strengths: boost valve on the dhx3 rear shock is great rims are super tough and look great and through axle in the front is super stiff
Weaknesses: fork tough but adjustment arent the best brakes arent as powerful as id like
it should have isgc mounts or should make rear triangle more chainguide compatible
Bottom Line:
my first freeride dh bike and i love it i used 2 dh on a hardtail and destroyed that so i got this and it makes things so much easier these are a great value and the 4 bar suspension design is simple and durable i would be as good as my friends on my hardtail and they had stinkys now i have 1 and it has made me better overnight i highly reccomend this product to anyone who is looking to get there moneys worth

Strengths: Awesome Frame, Front Shock, Corners Awesome, Jumps Well, Feels like it wants to go fast.
Weaknesses: Rear Shock, Pedals, Weight
Bottom Line:
This is an awesome bike and an awesome buy. I would recommend to anyone. I have had problems with the rear shock. It really is a cheap crappy rear shock. My spring was way to soft, and the rear suspension made clicking noises over small bumps. It only seems to absorb large hits. I think it is partially blown. I am hoping a rear shock upgrade to a fox DHX 5.0 Coil will make it ride much better.
