Strengths: super plush
Weaknesses: frame is flexible, 55ata fork
The bike felt great at first but now the linkage is so flexible it feels like riding a noodle. I've tightened everything I can but but it is still loose. Each pedal stroke flexes the frame about an inch and there is a big worn spot in the frame where the sprocket digs and another where the cranks hit the metal. I'm dissapointed in the magic link. I keep reading how others like it but I can't seem to understand why. I've taken it to 2 kona dealers and neither have been able to help. I ended up buying a Dirt bag and switched all the components to that.
My bike came with the Marzocchi 55ata forks and they failed numerous times. (see my review under 2008 ata's). I emailed Joe Kona from this site and he lied to me and told me 2 times he would send me a new fork due to all my problems. I sent him my home address and on a follow up email the bike shop address and Nothing. This was almost a year ago.
In all, I've never felt more ripped off buying a bike. If anyone can help me get this frame fixed I would appreciate it. I just don't feel right selling it the way it is.

Strengths: Strong Frame, Seriously strong magic link, the magic link actually works with zero pedal loss when accelerating, and it bends inward enough, changing the ride angle to prevent you from flying over the bars if the rebound is set too fast. Its a very forgiving bike
Weaknesses: Weight. My Setup = 47lbs
Setting up Magic Link properly, but its fairly easy once you know what youre doing
Its an awesome bike, I have mine setup for pure downhill and its amazing, I actually ride this to school daily since its my only bike and it rides quite nicely and its very maneuverable around tight turns, It loves urban freeride and trials aswell.
I managed to get this bikes for £1400 from £2000 so it made it a super bargain.
The suspension is unbelievably plush when dialed for your weight with the magic link clearly working as it should. I was lucky to get a 2008b red dot ATA2 55 fork (Fixed 2009 internals) which runs fantastically and compliments the rear.
The XT Servo wave brakes are as powerful as you could ever want (the upgrade to 203mm up front wasn't really required).
I did swap the stem to a zero rise 100mm job as I found the current trend of short stems puts the weight too far back and caused the bike to wheely too much when going up hill. I would recommend the stem swap if you like going uphill as well as down.
The 2.4" Advantage tyres eat up the trial and shrug off anything you hit, a bit heavy perhaps but coupled with the masses of soft travel you can stay seated and thunder over everything.
Bike Setup: Upgraded wheels to Chris King hubs on 5.1s, also changes the front disc to a 203mm, Stem change to a longer zero rise one

Strengths: Magic Link would be a strength but to be honest I dont feel much of a difference than my full suspension dawg
Weaknesses: Marzocchi 55-ATA2 front fork has quit on me after 16 days of riding.
The bike is sweet. It bombs real good and climbs pretty decent for its weight. Its good to have the weight going downhill and the suspension travel is good just feels like a beefed up dawg to be honest. Perfect for the freeride category!
Strengths: Magic link is amazing. Smooth on downhills hardly any bob when climbing.
Weaknesses: Uphill it lacks a little but it more than makes up for it everywhere else. (but remember it is a 7.4" travel bike after all)
This bike is amazing! The magic link makes the bike so plush and controlled on down hills and stiffens up for flat and climbing for excellent pedaling. You can use this bike for anything, X-country, down hill, and jumping. The new rear suspension really helps with brake jack on the down hills, you can now apply some real pressure to the rear brake before it locks up. On the flats this bike just wants to take off there is hardly any pedalbob. The rear suspension only activates when it is needed (it is crazy how well it works) With the RP2 shock you can lockout the rear and it is as close to a hard tail as you can get. I heard that the magic link is not setup properly it really sucks. I went on konaworld and downloaded their instructions on how to set it up and it works perfect for me. This bike in my opinion is better then the Nomad. BUY THIS BIKE. You will not be sorry.

Strengths: Awesome bike, feels like I can pretty much do anything with it... I haven't really pushed it much to be honest though. But everything to date has been very good.
Weaknesses: I bought the first one from my LBS they had no clue whatsoever how to set up the magic link... so I ended up having to do it on my own (http://www.konaworld.com/08_tech_magic.htm). Once its tuned and working for you its great. The components are not the highend ones since I got the basic model, but I figure if/when I break them I'll upgrade haha...
Oh, and it is a little heavy (i think 38lbs+/- when we weighed it in the shop), but so am I so who am I to complain. I'm not a racer, and I can use the exercise.
It is a sturdy bike that feels like it can take anything a clyde can throw at it... exactly what I was looking for! I would feel comfortable doing anything on the mountain with this bike. I even put street tires on it to ride around the paved paths (it does look weird though, with such a beast bike and suspenion and little 1.6" slicks)
Would recommend it to anyone looking for a bike that can do everything a mountain has to offer.

Weaknesses: A little heavy at 37.8 lbs; Magic Link suspension takes some education to fully exploit it's strengths.
This new magic link suspension is a bit of a leap of faith for the early adopters who are ready to try it out. So far, however, the Kona has delivered on it's promises. I've ridden this at both a bike park (Northstar)and on aggressive cross-country trails so I can speak to the full spectrum of its capability. The magic link engages when pedalling and gives a firm pedalling platform. Despite the "air-to-coil" transition between the Fox RP2 and the Magic link, there is no noticable transition to the rider between the two suspension systems. Also, I've really not noticed the changes to the bike's geometry when the magic link engages. If you think too hard about the system, you might second guess things, but if you focus on the trail ahead, the suspension does it's work without you. Perhaps more than other systems out there, set up is key so make sure your LBS knows how to set the magic link to your style and weight. To use a cliche, the bike feels several pounds lighter than its weight when climbing but you appreciate the extra beef when bombing downhill. The bike is confidence-inspiring and a hell of a lot of fun. If you're looking for an new All Mountain rig on a more aggressive side then look for the next Kona demo day in you area and give this bike a try.

Strengths: Descends like a freerider, doesn't climb like one
Buy this bike if you want one bike to take on a road trip and you want to be able to ride everything from an epic cross country to the whistler bike park, all on one bike.
Dont buy this bike if you are a weight weenie or only ride cross country, and live some where that the trails are smooth.
I was very cautious about the magic link idea when I first heard about it. I liked the idea of the geometry change, but at the same time didn't like the idea about the geometry changing on me in the corners. After the first ride where this did happen, I was able to make some preload changes to the link, and now the bike behaves very predictable. Climbs great even with the marz 55 in full length, yet descends like a full on free rider. It was nice not having to dial the fork up and down like is necessary on the 6.6 and blur LT the magic link takes care of this for you.
The low center of gravity makes this bike very predictable as well.
When shopping for this bike I also considered a 6.6 and a Blur LT/Nomad and spent some time riding them. The where very nice bikes, but I found that a fast travel adjustment fork was necessary for these bikes to behave on the climbs. The rear ends also felt flexy to me. So I kept waiting and waiting for some reviews of the coil-air. After a few months of no reviews I decided to bite the bullet and buy a coil-air with out testing one (first time I ever did that) and man am I glad. I love this bike and it is cheaper than the VPP's All in all very happy with the purchase and glad I cheaped out. LOL
