Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $1535.00
Strengths:Awesome frame and shock, mostly good components, great for up and down, pretty light, good value for money
Weaknesses:Manitou Splice fork not so good... Seemed good at the time (due to lack of experience), and worked alright as a fork for about a year, then the bushings started to go, then the rebound went... Got some nice Marz AM3 now. Same situation with the Hayes Soles... Seemed good at the time, and worked nicely, but as time went by they just weren't up to the job. Hayes Strokers fixed that nicely. Rear shock, while good, does tend to lose air pretty rapidly. Maybe need to fill up about every 3-4 weeks, or less. Umm the LX mechs didn't work well for me. They worked, just not very nicely. Also the saddle is falling apart a bit now, but that's to be expected really. That about all I can complain about.
Similar Products Used:Rocky Mountain Slayer, Giant XTC, uhh... Apolla Vendetta...
Bike Setup:Much upgraded now. Stock, except for: Marzocchi All Mountain 3 forks, Hayes Stroker Carbon brakes, Shimano XT front and (Shadow)rear mechs, Syncros Gain Carbon bars, Thomson X4 stem, Dr Bomb grips, DMR V8 pedals
Bottom Line:Amazing bike, when it's got the right components on it. Stock works absolutely fine, and could manage pretty much anything, it's just I'm a bit of a perfectionist and like my bike to run and stop nicely. Rear shock can handle the big stuff, from the drops to extreme brake bumps and high speed, and can handle equally the long climbs to the quick bursts rocky ascents. That is, when it has enough air in it. Most people saying it can't do up haven't got it set up right. When it is, it performs superbly. I can out do friends on hardtails due to the Maestro system giving me the stability on rocks and roots without the bob. So, I would defintiely recommend this bike if you're prepared to upgrade some parts, and if you aren't it will still do the job.

Favorite Trail:The next one I find
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $900.00
Purchased At:Slick Rock Cycles
Strengths:6" Travel, Reasonably Lighweight, Awesome frame for the money, better deal than other Reign models, upgrade to suit, save money OR get it just like you like it!
Weaknesses:Some components required immediate replacement due to my personal tastes; splice fork was junk way undersized for this rig, deraillers and shifters were terrible, this is mainly due to the foolish rapid-rise system. I swapped my old XT 9 speed triggers and deraillers in, problem solved. Stock bars are low and heavy, stock stem is to long, conti tires were terrible, trailbears rock! wtb saddle a little uncomfy for me, but not terrible...loveseat is overkill, but nice! grips were not good, oury is the way to go! The stock components work fine, I just did not like some of them. Friends have this bike stock and are happy. The bike is heavier than very high end 6" rigs, and of course high end hardtails. This is me being picky...
Similar Products Used:Specialized Enduro, Bighit, I test rode a lot of bikes in this category I wish I could remember them all, but the Reign beat them all!
Bike Setup:Currently Marzocchi Drop Off Fork, Nixon Platinum Fork is out for repair, but works very well, not too long lived before it broke though :-/ Raceface bash ring, Oury Grips, XT standard trigger shifters & deraillers, trailbear tires, azonic loveseat, answer protaper bars, truvativ short 31.8 stem, thomson short 31.8 stem is out for replacement, stock hayes sole brakes w 6" rotors, but eyeing the elixir CR's, cateye enduro 8 computer, stock pedals, stock cranks & BB, stock swinger shock.
Bottom Line:I haven't been looking at the newer models (from Giant or anyone else) since I bought this bike. So, I don't know if there are better bikes for the money out there now, but when I bought this, there weren't. I moved from a hardtail to this, and I rode a LOT of FS rigs (including some MUCH more expensive models) before deciding on this bike. You can ride it as is, or upgrade to suit, and the frame is killer! I only notice that my bike (sporting 2.5's) is slow/heavy on pavement or open fireroads when the XC boys blast by me, but on tight gnarly single track, steep downhills, and rock gardens, I feel right at home. I think on some stuff I am a lot faster, a lot easier on my lightweight hardtail, but on anything rough I am having a LOT more fun on this bike. FWIW I like the looks of the 2005 design better than the newer models through 08. As I look now, the '09 does look pretty sweet though! If you are looking for a 6" travel bike on somewhat of a budget, I would strongly consider throwing a leg over one of these!

Favorite Trail:City Park
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $1075.00
Purchased At:Ebay
Strengths:Soaks up hits, bumps, rocks, and roots really well with little to no chain slap.
Weaknesses:Bobs like a cork while fishing for bream. Sluggish Climbs. Rear Shock needs to be rebuilt.
Similar Products Used:Had a GT XCR 3000 Idrive before this.
Bike Setup:Standard Components but added a race face stem to shorten the feel, I'm 6'2" and ride the 21XL. The bike feels a little big sometimes even though a have correct leg angles. Added some platform pedals. Upgraded the disc brakes to Hayes 9's b/c the sole felt mushy all the time.
Bottom Line:Good investment for entry level full suspension but I wish I could afford a Santa Cruz or Rocky Mountain which would probably reduce the bob. Nevertheless, would recommend.

Favorite Trail:Hall Ranch
Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $1000.00
Purchased At:LBS
Strengths:Great Frame Design and Rear Suspension. Really soaks up the bumps and big hits. Most components are decent spec.
Weaknesses:Hayes So1e brakes will probably break, Splice fork is heavy and not very supple, stock tires are pretty sketchy
Bike Setup:Replaced Splice with Magura Laurin 130 (excellent so far). WTB Velociraptor in back Conti Mountain King up front. Will very soon have Avid Elixir CR's.
Bottom Line:This is a great bike to have for technical riding. The splice fork is pretty clunky and heavy. I replaced it with a Magura AM fork and everything got smoother.

The Hayes brakes are cheap. They do have good power and modulation if you're a lightweight like me (150lbs), but I can see how they would not be adequate for heavier riders. They also aren't very durable, I broke a seal or something on the rear brake after only half a season of riding.

The pedals, drivetrain, rims, and Shimano components are all top notch. If you have the scratch to go up a model (Reign 2 or 1) you may save yourself some money in the long run but this bike is perfectly upgradable down the road.

Purchased At:Cycle Solutions
Strengths:Bought the 2006 model of this bike last year in 2007. Have really enjoyed riding this bike at my local trails. The frame is definitely the best part of this bike, as well as the Fox Float R that comes stock. The sram X-7 shifters and rear derailleur that come stock are great too. This bike is great for riding on challenging up and down single track trails, and some light freeride stuff.
Weaknesses:The main weaknesses that I found are the, stock fork (replaced it with a Rock Shox Pike 454), stock wheel set (replaced it with Mavic 729 disc), stock brakes (replacing them next season with avid juicy 5's or 7's), and finally the stock tires (replaced them with Kenda Nevegal 2.35 Tomac's)
Similar Products Used:Nothing.
Bike Setup:See product weaknesses.
Bottom Line:Stock, this is a good all mountain trail bike. With a few tweaks and upgrades this bike can be a great all mountain trail bike. Been riding it for nearly two whole seasons up here in Canada, and this bike has not given me any major headaches yet. Buy this bike.

Strengths:the rear suspension is great and the ride position is good. the frame is very solid. climes very well and descends like a bat out of hell! the ground clearance it good for a bike of this type too.
Weaknesses:the Hayes sole disk brakes [the 6in rotors are not enough] watch the rear suspension bolts, on my bike they have a tendency to come loose. [that could be because i ride hard almost every day]
Similar Products Used:Specialized XC, Kona Kikapu
Bike Setup:Hayes 8in rotors, bash guard, Fox float R, Rockshox Tora 302 air

Strengths:Awesome frame, great suspension design. Solid on the downhills and a real steady climber (as long as you don't stand up to climb) I am 6'4 and can make it bob a bit when I really grind. Great bike for your buck, this was my first MTB so I was not sure how commited I was going to be....Now I am hooked.
Weaknesses:Hayes Brakes were a joke, I actually had the front ones break and had to send them back. The headset made me hunch over a bit too much, and I've already blown the seals on the front forks. (looks like the same complaints as everybody else)
Bike Setup:Easton 2" Rise Bars, Easton Neck, Serfas Grips, Avid Juicy 5 Brakes front and rear, Maxxis High Roller Tires.
Bottom Line:Great bike for your buck, solid craftsmanship. I knew I was compromising the componentry when I setteled for the bottom of the barrel Regin "3". The frame is pretty much the same as the higher end model so at least I can build up the compenents as the wallet permits me to do so.

Overall it's a great bike for a beginer or new-comer to the sport-you can get in and not break the bank. And it's got plenty of room for improvements.

Strengths:Solid frame and pivots, no bob, absorbs everything, great price for what you get, decent looking.
Weaknesses:A bit heavy, but how many "affordable" 6-inch travel bikes aren't? Sole brakes aren't the best; Splice fork sucked
Similar Products Used:Nothing with quite this much travel. I also have a Weyless XP with a Fox Vanilla RC and 5th Element-which I really like.
Bike Setup:Manitou Nixon Platinum fork, 2.5-inch rise h-bar, Mavic 717 wheels w/Nevegal and Pracer Smoke, Eggbeater pedals
Bottom Line:Great bike for the money-especially if you get a deal like the one I got. With the components I added/swapped out, it's a pretty nice bike; even if still a bit heavy.

The Splice fork developed some kind of noise, so I bought a (barely) used Nixon Platinum with 145mm travel, and that really complemented the rear susp. nicely.

The Sole brakes are a bit better now, but the adjustment screw in the lever still backs out a little-probably fixable with some loctite.

Strengths:Great rear shock! still running, Manitou Swinger with SPV 3 way. Wheels are sturdy and light. Great downhill bike! I am 50 years young and need the kush!
Weaknesses:Hayes sole brakes, ugh. Manitou Splice fork (can you say inconsistant?). The bar stem was too long, replaced with short one. I am 5'9" and the wheel base is a bit long.
Similar Products Used:first mtb; I own a trek fuel e6 also as a backup.
Bike Setup:Fox float R fork; Manitou Swinger SPV 3 way; Truvativ GXP crankset; Avid Juicy 5 hydraulic discs; Shimano xt shifters.
Bottom Line:A GREAT first bike! I wasn't sure I would like MTB but I got hooked and after a couple hundred miles, have upgraded most of the components. I like the frame that well but am interested in the 2008 version (lighter!). Like I said I need the kush ride it gives, especially after adding the Fox Float R. Oh, man, let it rip!

Here is what I have done with it after wearing it down! 3 chains and 3 rear tires, but it took a lot of rides to do it!

the Sole brakes broke, replaced with avid juicys; I got sick of the splice fork 6 months later, replaced with Fox float R; shifters kinda wore out, replaced with shimano xt; bent middle chain ring (soft and stressed?) and wore out cassette, replaced with truvativ gtx and sram cassette.

Strengths:climbs better than my old 4" FSR bike and descends a hell of a lot better. This bike has helped me really step up my game. You can fly through rock gardens with no brakes and just point the bike down and it will go there.
Weaknesses:seat stay bearings went bad in a few months, upgraded to Enduro
Bike Setup:Z1 Light ETA, SRAM X9, XT cranks, Juicy 7 brakes 203/180, custom wheel set
Bottom Line:for the money, it is hard to beat the package that Giant gives you. I bought the frame only so i was able to build it to my own spec, but with some changes to the stock bike it can be a sweet ride indeed.

Strengths:Suspension system is owesome, guys from Giant designed rocket that allow crazy downhills and climbs easily as well. Frame looks great!
Weaknesses:Components: fork which seems to work like lazy bustard & brakes (Hayes Sole) that you'll replace sooner or later (I did it nex day I bought my bike). I'm sceptical as for tyres which have rather weak grip when curving. Look for new ones.
Similar Products Used:Kona Coiler
Bike Setup:Stock except brakes - I replaced Sole with Shimano 535 (front) and hayes XC (rear)
Bottom Line:That is my first full-suspention bike. I tried a few, but decided to approach Jamis. Unfortunately there is no dealer in Poland for Jamis (so far).
Accidently I saw Giant in a store nearby and decided to find out some more. I have to admit that most info found on mtbr is true and relates to my bike as well. It's been 1 year since I ride my Giant Reign and nothing broke down.
The bike rides very well, the suspention works perfectly giving you confidence in riding downhill trails you would never try. Maestro keeps rear wheel glued to a trail and absorb every bulk. Thanks to manitou swinger it doesn't effect bouncing!
Uphill is not as easy as on my hardtail but I found out that rear susp helps a lot. You're supposed to sit and relax while maestro works making trail smooth & easy. I was really affraid of uphills on this bike but as it turned out I was wrong. Ofcourse the bike is a bit heavy but you have to make compromise: it rocks on downhills and lets you go uphill - what more expect from all-mountain bike?

One thing that seems to be annoing about this bike is soud comming from rear part, caused by rear deraileur hitting frame while landing after bigger drop-off. I cannot do anything about this...any advice from other users how to solve it?

Just to sum up: the bike is worthy the money I spend. The maestro system works fantastic. The frame along with susp system is great platform for upgrading and creating your dream FS bike.

Definitely need to replace the brakes ASAP (I'm getting Avid Juicy 5's), and the tires (Bontrager Big Earls). Hayes Sole's are crap (no power), and the tires just aren't beefy enough to take what the bike can take! It's great for everything. Strengths:Superb frame! Very stable, and great with the Fox Float shock. The SRAM X7 shifters are sweet, never had SRAM before and I way prefer over Shimano so far.
Weaknesses:The Rock Shox Tora 302 may break in, but a bit twitchy, not as plush as I like.
Similar Products Used:Stumpjumper FSR 2005 (hated that bike!!!!), chain suck and the XTR rear derailler being too fragile drove me insane.
Bike Setup:Tora 302 Air Rock Shox fork, Fox Float r, Hayes sole discs, SRAM x7 rear, Shimano LX front d, absolutely stock 2006 Reign 3
Bottom Line:A freakin' superb bike!!!! I sold my 2005 Stumpy FSR due to the chain suck (unbelievably common, would stop my ride 3 times at least per run) and crappy XTR rear derailler that always got knocked out of whack with the smallest ding. Admittedly, the trails here are incredibly rocky and hard on bikes.

This bike rocks! The shifters are smooth, the rear shock works great with the Maestro geometry and the brakes aren't that bad (got poor write ups here). The 302 Tora fork is OK so far, I haven't got it dialed in yet. It may get better as I learn to get it tuned for my weight and riding. No chain suck!!! Climbs real nice as the rear wheel stays in contact better than any bike I've ever ridden, but it is heavy. Down the hill, its even better. This bike is good for a newbie to probably a fairly advanced rider. Oh yeah, and I love the seat. Probably too heavy for you racers, but it is by far the most comfortable I've ridden on a Mtn bike. As I said, heavy, but you can upgrade components and make it as light as you would ever need. Or, eat two less cheeseburgers per week and save 5 lbs the cheap way....

Totally worth the money, by far the nicest mtn bike for the $$$ and I've tested most of them over the past year.

I like this bike, I also own a 26 lbs ML7 that's an excellent climber, this bike climb like a champ, decent great. a bit on a harsh side when set up with platform but with virtual link, I really don't feel the need just the recommended sag did the job for me already. I set it on the softer side, with 6" of rear travel who cares.

super effient climber, only on the extended climb you feel the weight of the bike otherwise it's just want to go. although, manitou swinger is not my first choice but It does its job just fine.

Strengths:Excellent frame and suspension design. Bob free pedaling in most situations. Descents stable and quick. Great Technical climber. Rims have held up well under my 220 lbs.
Weaknesses:Component spec is a kinda shoddy.

A tad heavy (34lbs on the 21") but what 6" travel bike isn't..

The biggest dissapointments for me were the tires (slippery tread) and the hayes sole brakes. I dont care for the soles levers and the brakes seemed to regularly need alot of adjusting that I couldnt do myself. After a year they just outright failed on me.
Rear shock tends to rebound pretty fast on big hits.
People really seem to hate the splice fork but it hasnt really done me wrong so i wont jump on that bandwagon yet. Its definatly not as plush as the competition and the adjustment knobs dont seem to do much of anything but it gets the job done.

Not really a stand on the climbs kind of bike. More of sit down and churn while the suspension eats up all the rough stuff.
Similar Products Used:Not much this was my first full suspension bike after a few years of riding a hardtail.
Bottom Line:An excllent bike for someone who wants a solid base to build on. The frame and suspension design are fantastic and if you dont have the dollars for a Reign 1 you can still have a similary great ride and chip away at the upgrades when you get the money.

5 for value because you get a more budget verion of a fantastic bike. If you dont like the budget parts upgrade as needed. Not many 6" VPP bikes are out there in this price range, if any.

4 Overall because some of the components are pretty crappy. But not so crappy that they need replacing immediatly.

I've been exceptionally happy with this bike over the year I have spent with it. I'm switching over to a 29'er soon but I think I might keep the Reign around for the more heavy duty trails.

- UST Wheelset [longterm]
Bottom Line:Believe the hype, this bike rocks. Check the Giant Discussion forum and you will see what i mean. I love riding this bike.

I was really worried about what bike to buy. i had the choice of the Trance or the Reign and i opted for the Reign and have never regretted the decision. The bike loves to climb. Its a strong climber and combined with the Tora318 with remote lockout, its a demon.

It is however not without issues. There is a cable route issue near the rear linkage. i rectified this by replacing the c clips with zipp ties and have no problems since. there was a bearing issue early on with the first releases but i have not experienced any issues yet, so Giant must of changed the bearing type. Giant is known for "paperthin" paint jobs so spend the time and money and get some clear 3m film to cover it to stop cable rubs.

The Brakes are ok to start with, but i am looking at getting a set of Saints fitted. for the meantime i have changed the front rotor to an 8" to help with the stopping duties.

The stock tyres suck. I went with Geax Sturdies as i wanted an all round tyre that was not going to wear out in a hurry, but also handle mud and rocky conditions. so far so good.

all in all, Its a great, value for money, bike. you wont be disappointed with it. I even race Enduro's with it. its that good.

Strengths:The frame, suspension and overall bike geometry provide an amazing ride. Keep your butt in the seat and it climbs just fine. A good weight for a "do it all" type of bike. Not the best cross country bike or best down hill bike but handles both well and is a great all mountain bike. Very smooth suspension has made me a more aggressive rider. Giant really came through with the Maestro suspension.
Weaknesses:Just about everything except the frame and suspension components on this bike were subpar. Hold out and save your money for a Reign 2 or Reign 1. If you don't then you will be spending more to upgrade everything like I have had to do. **I need to mention that mine is the 2005 model and maybe the 2006 Reign 3 is better equipped.** After shopping around I think it is always better to skip the "entry level" models and always spend the extra $ on the midrange models. This is true for all brands. You save way more than if you would have to upgrade each component seperately. For example...

The Hutchinson Bulldog tires were horrible and have been replaced with a Panaracer Smoke on the back and a Panaracer Dart on the front.

The pedals were difficult to clip in and out of, especially in technical areas. Replaced with Crank Bros Egg Beater pedals.

The Hayes Sole brakes are horrible. These entry level hydraulic brakes are always rubbing, squeeling and not gripping. I sent the front brake back when it quit working and even the new one has barely any stopping power. I am currently replacing them with Avid Juicy 7's.

I think the handlebars could be a tad wider and that the angle of the front could be a bit more slack but this is really no big deal.

Replaced the back wheel assembly as it was never really "true" even after adjustment. Finally had to replace it due to a crash.

Bottom Line:If you a looking for a great do it all bike then look no further. However, save your cash and make sure you get a Reign 2 or Reign 1. If you have another bike with good components then you may want to just buy the frame and swap them over. Can not say enough about the suspension on this ride!!!

Bike Setup:Stock with Shimano 540 pedals.
Bottom Line:The Maestro suspension works. It always seems active. Sit in the seat and the bike climbs without pedal bob. It soaks up the rough stuff and remains stable. I've jumped the bike and taken some small drops and it hasn't seem to phase the bike. I was impressed since I weigh 230. I went with the 18" and I'm 5'8". The next size down felt a little to small and I didn't notice a difference in standover height. The slopping top tube was a big plus over the other bikes. This frame is worth the upgrades as it's the same used by the Reign i and 2. I was looking more for the Reign 2 to start out but since this was the first full suspension I've owened, I decided to save a few bucks with the deal I got on a 2006. The Rock Shox Tora is the first major upgrade I will do also followed by brakes. The Tora 302 has really no adjustments. It's a base fork and the travel is short. The Heyes are ok, but I've always been a fan of Avids. Other minor parts are the seat post and stem. Like other Easton seatpost I've had, they always creak on me. I've got a Thomson Elite going on it, hope that cures that. Overall this is an excellent bike and platform for riding many various types of riding.

Strengths:maestro suspension system, appearance, PRICE!, standover height
Weaknesses:Splice fork, hayes sole brakes, weight if you are looking for a climber
Similar Products Used:Testrode trek Liquid, Kona Coiler, GT iDrive 5.0
Bike Setup:Stock 130mm Manitou Splice (non-adjustable), Azonics pedals, e13 chainring bashguard, 42mm stem, higher rise bars than factory, Maxxis 2ply DH tires, clamp-on grips, all else stock (outer front chainring removed for bashguard)
I bought the bike slightly used, all extras included.
Bottom Line:I've only been out for a few rides so far but overall, I absolutely LOVE this bike!

Let's start with the bad:
-The 130mm splice fork is crap. On the softest setting, it still feels like a pogo stick. Also doesn't make much sense to mount a 130mm fork on a bike with a 150mm rear suspension system. My first upgrade will be a 150mm fork, without a doubt.
-Hayes Sole Hydros...they work okay, but be prepared to replace these right away if you require a lot of braking power. My second upgrade (a few seconds after the fork), will be new hydros, not sure what I'll go with yet, but most likely 8" front rotors and 6" rear. I rode a liquid with that setup and I like it a lot.
-This bike is a little on the heavy side...32lbs out of the box, my current build probably comes in over 33lbs. If you require something more lightweight, I would look toward the Reign 1 or 2, the Reign 1 comes 28lbs out of the box which is fantastic considering the durability and capability of this base bike.

And on with the good:
Giant hit a grandslam with the Maestro Suspension....it soaks up the bumps, the jumps, and holds the tire down over rocks, roots, ruts, you bring it, it takes it. And what really amazes me about this bike, is even mine built up at 33lbs, IS a climber. I'm not going to win any uphill races, but if you pick a moddest gear, keep your butt on the seat and keep your cadence up, this bike will climb and the suspension will not suck your life away. I swear by this, and keep in mind I am running a 42mm stem...if you run the stock stem, I believe you can climb most anything you could on any other bike.

I am 5'8" and I went with the 16" frame, the cockpit feels a bit short (which is good, that's how I set the bike up), and I have plenty of standover height which was one thing I was nervous about, this being my first full suspension bike and me being vertically challenged :). Overall the bike is very comfortable to ride, I don't feel like I'm mounting a horse and it's very maneuverable on technical terrain, moreso than I ever expected from a 6" FS bike.

The bike is great at speed, the suspension keeps you in line and takes the jumps well. This bike is a pleasure to ride and I believe that it's making me a better rider.

I recommend this bike to someone that wants an all mountain bike and has a budget...someone that wants to hang on the XC trails one day, hit the ski resorts another day, and hit the technical runs any day in between. There's a better bike for each, but this bike takes all of it well, and it won't destroy your bank account. This bike doesn't have the greatest components, but that's expected at this price.

5 Chilis because so far it's taken everything I've thrown at it!

Strengths:handles well, stable at speed over almost any type of terrain, has taken anything I have thrown at it including several trips to ski resorts this summer (multiple jumps and drops up to 5 feet with transition landings)
Weaknesses:hayes brake levers kept creeping in (just add some "blue" loctite to the adjustment screw and problem stops), cable rub in several places need to re-route cables, deralieur cables have been replaced twice and brake cable once because of breakage at the point where they have to bend when the rear suspension cycles. Original Hutchison tires are cr*p, replaced with Maxxis Minion 2.35" front and rear no problems. Makes a bit af noise over rough terrain. Just put a chainstay protector on and put a couple of wraps of electrical tape on the lower part of the front deralieur
Similar Products Used:Test rode Trek Liquids. Raleigh Ram XT's, Cannondale Prophets, among other similar bikes.

Bottom Line:This bike has exceeded my expectations and enhanced my riding capabilities noticably within the first week of riding. If you want a great handling, stable(in the air, and over anything) able to handle up to 5' drops with transition landings (from experience) and occasional ski resort weekends that also goes uphill without overly punishing someone that's not in racing shape. This is your bike. I will say that you should not just take my advice, go and ride as many similar bikes before you spend $1700 on a bike. I Did!! Very capable frame for an excellent price. Easily on a par with Specialized Enduro - and feels better to me
Weaknesses:Components: I ride once or twice a week, mostly fairly heavy XC. All worked well for a few months but bike has spent about 2 months in total in the shop: I am on my THIRD bottom bracket, problems with forks (not the stock ones), brakes (sorted under warranty), top shock bush went after 6 months and now the freehub is on its way out
Similar Products Used:Just about everything on the market
Bike Setup:Awful Manitou forks swapped day 1 for Marzocchi All Mountain 1s, which have had their own problems, but not as bad as most Manitous!

Changed relatively long stem for a shorter Easton Vice.
Bottom Line:When all is working, this bike is awsome. My Marzocchi AM1s are longer than the stock Manitous on their 150mm setting. The bike is pretty slack, but works very well.

Rear suspension is excellent: still running very smoothly and the shock keeps its pressure well. Only problem was the top shock bush going after just 6 months. It may be common, but I don't think it's acceptable.

If I was buying again, I'd look at a Reign 2 or at making some pretty big changes at purchase. The hubs are not clever, neither is the bottom bracket. The brakes are OK, but something more poweful and reliable would be preferable.

The tires are pretty weak for this type of bike... unless you like little traction and pinch flats I would change them! The brakes are always in need of adjustment. The handles will pinch your fingers after a few rides. I rode this bike and had to have the front derailer adjusted and then I rode it again and the rear derailer freaked out. Pretty frustrating! Still working out the quirks!

Overall though it is a good bike for the $$, but needs some upgrades to make it last!

Strengths:I paid MSRP for this bike, but it had the best components in its price range. Very little bob while climbing seated, and if you're cool, it doesn't bob much when standing!
Weaknesses:The fork is crap. Screw manitou. I landed hard off a 2ft drop and blew the rebound valve. My LBS had the bike for 3 weeks waiting for parts to repair the fork. Sh*tcan the Splice and get yourself a Vanilla RLC. And the adjustments do very little, if anything at all. Also, the little bushings that attach the brake levers to the hydraulic pistons on the so1e brakes. The screw kept backing out. I had the blades swapped out for 2-finger blades, and the tech also replaced the bushings with the new, upgraded ones that have nylon threads so the screw doesn't back out anymore! Oh, and the Bulldog tires are too soft and not knobby enough. I wore those things out quick!
Similar Products Used:None. This is my first dual suspension.
Bike Setup:Stock, except for the brake levers, Wierwolf tires, and a bash ring for the rock gardens I like to ride. LOL I also wrapped the chain stay with bar tape to mitigate the damn chain slap.
Bottom Line:A totally awesome ride for the $$$. Equal or better components than any bike in its price range (except teh lousy fork). This bike has really inspired more confidence in my riding. The Maestro rear suspension design is really ingenious, too. It doesn't seem to have problems soaking up whatever I throw at it. And IMO it's a much more clever design than any of the other bikes I looked at when I was shopping (GF Cake, Rocky Mountain Slayer, Kona Dawg, Specialized FSRxc). I give it a 4 overall, because of the fork.

Bottom Line:All the standard kit from this bike has been swapped off onto my old bike (Scott FX Enduro) and the good kit from the Scott put onto here. This makes my Reign 3 more like a Reign 1+. So, what have I got? A lightweight (for this type of bike), fast, good climbing bike - which also goes down smoothly and without any limitations. OK, so it is not a DH bike - but 5.5" at the front and 6" at the back means that it's much better than a 4" XC or hardtail going down - with VERY little penalty going up. Highly recommended - the marketing is not overhype in this case.
If I was buying from scratch (like, I didn't have a lot of XTR/Talas etc from somewhere else) - I would have bought the Reign 2 - it has a better standard config than the Reign 3.

Since March I have ridden about 1000 miles, I love the suspension since it has really helped me become a better rider, people actually look at my progress (which the bike has helped me achieve).
My problems were the Brakes, but I wrote to Hayes and they sent me replacement parts for the Brakes, since then I had no more problems.
If I climb, I have to stay seated because otherwise the suspension will bob, but if you stay seated it does climb very well.
Going down is what I really love and the maestro suspension really has helped me increase the speed and go through obstacles better.
If you start MTB and like to go downhill (and don't care for the 30 pounds weight while climbing) this bike will help you improve faster and it is the best bike and suspension travel for the money you will find.

Bike Setup:stock Reign 3
Bottom Line:I've had the bike for just over 1 month and I ride almost every other day for about 2-3hrs. At first I thought it was the most amazing bike ever going over jumps, climbing hills...expanding the territory I could reach on a MTB. I made sure to cover the frame where the wires came near when I first set out on it just in case. I mean, I just dropped over 2k(canadian) on this bike. As stated in previous reviews the first problem I noticed was that the So1e lose their pressure and need constant adjustment. But then I noticed that the wiring had rubbed through my tape (in under 1 month) and had then worn through the "diamond-shield" and the powder coat and had compeletely flattened my top tube and was digging into some of the saudering jobs by the welds. I thought this was undheard of so I called Giant who asked me to send them the bike(which would take 2 weeks) and then wait for them to decide whether or not it is covered in the warranty because they didn't believe me. I figure I'm just going to ride until the end of the season (2 more months) and then send it to them. Will post more when all is said and done...

Unless you want to continuesly check your frame/tape jobs I wouldn't recommend this bike at the moment. Seeing as it is a whole new design maybe Giant didn't fully check their cable setup because it's apparently not such a great one.

Bottom Line:For some time I've been trying to bulid a very uphill/downhill versatile bike. This one is, I think, more downhill oriented. I've been riding reign for 3 weeks now - every second day, mostly on my local trails (small hills) and few days in real mountains.

As far as going uphill is concerned this bike is not a rocket, is a bit heavy and bobs when out of saddle (no bob when seated!). But still, if you're in shape (I am not:( ) you can climb wherever you want especially on technical trails. Rear suspension works very well while climbing, providing you with traction on rocks and roots. I found the travel adjustment on Pike handy on really steep, long climbs.

Going downhill is a completely different matter. The bike is not nervous when going fast and at the same time nimble and easy to turn on twisted, technical trails. The rear suspension is sensitive to small and big bumbs, quite progressive - I haven't yet used the last 12mm (out of 60) of the shock's shaft - but maybe I am jumping of too small stuff:) It work when braking, pedaling, and landing - I am really impressed. I think it's way better then my previous bike VT3. If you're skilled you will not have problems with catching up with guys on 'real' DH rigs provided they're no too skilled or fearless :)

Drivetrain is working well, not exceptional though. Moreover, needed some time to get used to Low-normal rear der., which seems not so bad idea if you climb technical stuff.

I've changed rotors to 203mm ones. They are more than enough on my local trails but could be stronger in 'real mountains'. Not that they wont stop you, but you need to squeez the lever strongly.

All in all I am very pleased with this bike (especially in this custom setup) and do not plan to change it for at least 2 years :) If you want climb for hours, especially on steep trails, trance may be better choice, but if you rather prefer bombing downhill and climb is just what you have to do before it:) go for Reign!!

Duration Product Used:3 months
Purchased At:Bike N' Hike
Strengths:Frame construction, shock, rides like a dream. Can set up the suspension for diffrent types of riding
Weaknesses:Fork, tires and Shimano drive train.
Bike Setup:50mm Race Face stem, FSA DH bar, SRAM X9 shifters, X0 derrailuer. PC970 cassette, 970 chain. Continental Vapor tires.
Bottom Line:By far the best and most fun ride. The Maestro suspension works! Very little bob even out of the saddle. Brake jack is minnimal at best. Able to do two wheel drift cornering with out worries. My only real complaint is Shimanos crappy rapid rise drive train, that is no fault of the bike.

Bottom Line:This is an update to a previous review. I have now had more time in the saddle over veried terrain from climbing forrest singletrack, to bombing north shore black diamond downhill and I still love this bike overall. I have however come to the conclusion the fork is underbuilt. I don't think tat Manitou puts enough R&D in their product. The fork started topping out constantly, and my rebound vaulve completly blew out. I hopefully can get it fixed with new lowers, a seal kit, and new rebound vaulve, but we will see. The tires are made for slickrock sandstone or very hardpack dirt and little else. The tires wash out on berms, and do not hook up in wet or loamy conditions, If you are thinking of buying this bike I would suggest seeing if the shop would take the fork and tires in an upgrade trade towards something else. I suggest a Marzocchi all mountain type fork or a Fox all mountain fork. I will be replacing mine with a 36 or 66. Also get some tires with some tread. Mountain bikes need knobbies not semi slicks. The rear is to awesome for words.

Strengths:Frame, Standing Clearance, plush ride, good components, handling, ability to roll over any thing.
Weaknesses:NONE.
Similar Products Used:Giant ATX 870
Bike Setup:Splice front , Manitou SPV 3-way (rear), Hayes So1e disc, Hutchinson tires, Alex rims
Bottom Line:I am about 240lbs. and this ride was SMOOOOOTH. I couldn't be any happier about this bike. People talk about upgrading components right away. What for? Trust me you will be very satisfied right out of the box with this rig. Once you dial it in to you specs. you can't go wrong. This bike is sweet. For what you get for the price go with the Reign 3 and use the stock parts for now and save some money and upgrade later.

Strengths:This bike is awesome. climbs like a xc bike and flys down hill. it feels solid. Perfect bike for a SUPER D. The price is great gives you room to customize. The Time ATAC pedal through mud well and are easy to get in and out of.
Weaknesses:The set screw on the Hayes Sole brake lever keeps backing out. Loctite fixed it. Two pinch flats first week out on the Hutchinson bulldog air lights. Put in some slime liners and good to go.
A Talas front fork would make this bike even sweeter. the Splice is Ok.

Bottom Line:Giant makes a great bikes. And the Reign 3 is killer.
I have the 18" frame and I have plenty of stand over hiegth.

Favorite Trail:singletrack in Tahoe, trails in moab
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $1450.00
Strengths:Handles well, seems solid smashing down tough trials. Rear suspension great. Geometry seems well designed. Reasonably light weigh for all the suspension.
Weaknesses:Hayes Sole disk brakes need adjusting once or twice each ride or the levers get closer to the handlebar and crush your fingers. Front shock broke (locked up) in first half hour of use, going UP hill. Shimano chain twisted like taffy during routine shifting. LX rear derailleur ("rapid rise"?) now requires heavey pressure on the shifter. Shifting sluggish compared to older LX rear derailleur on other bike.
Similar Products Used:Specialized Enduro
Bike Setup:Stock except replaced front shock with Manitou Minute instead of waiting for replacement of questionable reliability (see above), and chain replaced free by LBS after original twisted (see above).
Bottom Line:It's great when everything's working, but it usually isn't. I've had more problems in the first 3 months than in 4 years with my old Enduro.
For the brake problem, Hayes sent me some plastic sleeves which they said would prevent the disk brake reach adjusting screw from jiggling around during riding making re-adjustment necessary every ride. They also said it would be easy to install. When they came the installation was obviously something you would prefer to have done at a shop (special tools, bleeding system). I guess one solution would be to buy the Reign 1 or 2, since the problems have been with components.

Strengths:The price, and component specs.
Weaknesses:The tires do not dig in.
Similar Products Used:Specialized FSR Enduro Expert, Jamis Dakar XLT, Giant VT, Iron Horse SGS,
Bike Setup:Mostly stock with Sram x9 twisties and rear der. Also changes stem to an FSA FR200 70mm.
Bottom Line:This bike is the most efficient long travel trail bike that I have ever thrown my leg over. I have been a bike mechanic for 13 years and have ridden almost every suspension design and have never had a climber like this. When you point it down hill it rips. Truly an all mountain bike. The fork that everyone seems to slam on has worked flawlessly it has never bottomed out and soaks up all bumps that i've encountered. I think some people believe that you have to ride an $800 fork to get performance this fork proves that this is not the case. I love this bike. I will post updates as I get more time in.

Favorite Trail:Rocky Hill Ranch, Smithville, Texas
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $1500.00
Purchased At:University Cyclery, Factory offer
Strengths:Shock absorbsion without affecting pedal input. Cush. Agressive on technical sections, Rides like it weighs much less than 32.7 lb. Well built, great paint and decals.
Similar Products Used:GT Karakoram, Giant Rainier, Giant NRS
Bike Setup:Okay, I changed a few things right off the bat. Taken from my NRS were Cane Creek Zonos Disc wheels, SRAM X.0 Deraillier, SRAM 9.0 Shifters, Aztec teflon-coated shifting cables, Specialized ergo grips, Ritchey tires, Stan's No Tubes, and I replaced the Manitou Splice Elite fork with a new 04 Marzocchi Z1 Drop Off 1.
Bottom Line:This is the best bike I have ever owned or ridden. Hands down! It handles well (after setting up the suspension) and climbs like a hardtail, acutally better than a hardtail (IMHO). There is a slight weight penalty (my Rainier weighs 30 lb. with a Thudbuster, my NRS weighed 32.?, this bike is 32.7), however the ride more than compensates for excess weight. Everything is easier on this bike. Prior to this weekend, my best milage for a week was in the 40's. I just did 60 miles on this bike in the first three days of ownership. Sag was set to factory specs on the front and rear (12mm) and I have lowered the preload on the fork a little to be better on the small stuff. I have the shock SPV on 60psi after trying a little higher and a little lower. I am 46, 6'2" and riding weight is probably in the mid to high 220's. I ride the 21" frame.

Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $1600.00
Purchased At:Performance Bike
Strengths:Maestro suspension, SPV Swinger shock, nice paint job, good looking frame
Weaknesses:Stock Parts - Manitou Splice fork, Hayes So1e brakes, stem and bar
Similar Products Used:Own - Schwinn Straight 8, GF Tasajarra
Tried - SC Heckler w/ 5th Element, SC Blur, Ellsworth Joker, GT i-drive
Bike Setup:Replaced stock parts to: Marzocchi Z-150SL, Hayes HFX, Easton Vice stem, Easton Monkey Bar, Mavic Rims w/ WTB 2.5 Weirwolf
Bottom Line:I was tired of riding my 42 lb. downhill bike as a trailbike. So I was going to buy a SC Heckler frame and build it up with some new parts and existing parts from my downhill bike. Investment would have been $1600.
Doing my research, I decided to buy the complete bike Reign 3 for the same price and upgrade with the parts from my downhill bike.
Awesome ride! It does everything that the Maestro suspension claims. It handles technical terrain better than my downhill, and climbs better than my hardtail. Perfect trailbike. This is the only bike I need for the type of riding I do.
4 for value because of the upgrades needed.
5 for overall because of the ride!
Maestro vs VPP. It's worth a look.

Duration Product Used:Tested or demo'ed only
Strengths:Sweet frame, swinger shock, nice setup for price. comfy. awesome standover
Weaknesses:Manitou fork, geometry not slack enough for all mountain bike. felt like a super plush xc bike. maybe due to 150 rear/ 130 front? maybe fix with longer fork
Similar Products Used:kona dawg primo, giant vt,
Bike Setup:stock
Bottom Line:Giant makes awesome bikes. Most of their new line is well priced and the maestro suspension is a great thing. Switch out the fork with a bomber and you have a great bike. Rest of the bike was great, and the standover is incredible. 5 for value, cause its cheaper than the enduro and has better parts, but 4 overall because of the xc riding position
