Bottom Line:This is an update to my previous post. I am about to change the bike over to 9spd, mainly because I need to get rid of the older XTR crank. I just raced this bike again for the first time in years and it still rides great. I can't find any cracks on it anywhere, not that I want to. I am the original owner from 11/97. The polished frame is a dream to keep clean. The bike is heavy by todays standards, but it is incredibly efficient when it comes to transferring pedal power to forward momentum. I really wish I knew what the geometry was so I could find something similar. I have been strongly considering the Tomac Cortez, but this bike is still going strong. I raised my value rating because of the price I originally paid. What a deal. US made.

Favorite Trail:Route of the Hiawatha
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $400.00
Purchased At:Ebay
Strengths:It's been putting up with abuse for over 10 years, how can you beat that? Quality craftsmanship that has stood the test of time. They don't make them like this anymore.
Weaknesses:The aluminum frame by todays standards is probably ancient, but it was top of the line back in the day.
Similar Products Used:This was my first mountain bike, I lived next to the old Answer Products building in Valencia, CA for 23 years, and wanted one since I was a kid.
Bike Setup:Bought it from the original owner in roughly 2002. Original Hyperlite bars, Ringle neck, Fuji seat, Manitou 3 forks (just replaced the elastomers with springs through a guy on ebay) and my forks are working again!
Bottom Line:I wouldn't trade it for anything. I rode it to work daily for 2 years, then mostly weekends on road and some trails here in the northwest once every few months, and it just keeps taking it. I'm about 195lbs and so was the previous owner.

Strengths:I love my 'tou!!! I bought this bike bike in 1998 from my friends dad and promptly broke the rear drop out. Manitou sent me a 1998 model on partial warranty which has beefier dropouts. I have been on this thing nearly everyday, winters included for 10 years. I ride hard, mostly commuting, some trail riding, but I like to jump everything and I weigh 200 lbs! The frame has outlasted many other components and finally developed a crack in the CNC chainstay yoke but is in a place that I can still ride with confidence. I love this thing!!!! I am searching for a replacement and cannot find much that is comparable. I want another one.
Weaknesses:None. One small ding in the top tube(been riding with it for 5 years), and a crack in the chainstay yolk after 9 years of use(been riding like that for a year now).
Similar Products Used:nothing is comparable. used to have a KHS though and a Schwinn or two.
Bike Setup:Originally purchased with gripshift and XTR brake levers and brakes, promptly replaced with XT rapidfire and v-brakes. Has original XT grouppo except the cassette has been replaced twice and am running FSA rings. Control tech seatpost finally bent and replaced with Thompson Elite this last year along with Vuelta wheels after dinging the original Mavic 217's on XT hubs. Original Control Tech stem, Aheadset and Manitou EFC fork(dead). Sella Italia saddle, Onza Raw 110 barends, Onza Porcupaws grips, Ritchey Logic pedals.
Bottom Line:I LOVE MY MANITOU HT!!! I have replaced everything except the derailleurs, crank arms, fork, stem, headset, and handle bar over time. 99% of my riding has been on this frame though. It has made it through thick and thin, crap weather and good, hops, jumps, trails, crashes(shattered my leg on the last one, still healing), you name it. I took good care of it and as a result it is still going strong, need to retire it though. I need to find either a brand new one or something nearly exactly the same.

Favorite Trail:Sagebrush Safari course through Corral Canyon ORV park
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $300.00
Purchased At:Answer Manitou
Strengths:Light, quick, well balanced and predictable handling, and very easy to clean.
Weaknesses:Proprietary front derailleur clamp made by Answer that more than likely can no longer be found. Over sized seat tube and head tube diameter, but only in terms of todays component compatibility.
Similar Products Used:Older Trek 7000, Manitou HT comp.
Bike Setup:Manitous SXR fork, Chris King headset, sram X0 gripshift shifters, Avid Tri Align brakes and levers (simply the best cantilevers), XTR crank (older grey model) with 46/34/34 rings, XTR front derailleur, Sram X9 rear derailleur, and Chis King hubs build up with Mavic rims.
Bottom Line:I am sure there are still a few out there, and I had set my sights on the Tomac version if and when the Manitou broke, but the bike is still kicking. I had the comp version before this one, and broke it back at the chain and seat stay junction on the drive side. That was easy to predict as they had machined out the pieces of aluminum to save weight. I am very impressed by the handling of this bike, especially at speed on tight twisty trails. When the bike needs to go straight, it does, and when you need to turn in a hurry, no problem, and when you have to stand to climb, the rear tire digs in and the frame is very solid. After 10 years, I imagine I am very familiar with the bike as a whole, so why change a good thing. Chris King saved me with their de-evolution headset as the HT has a 1 1/4" head tube. The only thing I am locked into at this point, besides not being able to use disc brakes, is the front derailluer. The oversized seat tube requires a special clamp for the front derailleur that Answer used to supply with the frame. So far no problems with the good old reliable XTR front derailleur. Bike is very quick and agile, and probably best suited to someone who likes to race, or simply ride fast. I personally hate exploration type mtn. bike rides. I like to know my route, or at least know there will be nice trails to ride fast on. When the day comes to replace it, I will try my best to mimic the geometry.

Strengths:Scroll down to April, 2002...I stand by my words
Bike Setup:SINGLESPEED, now! Spot rings on the SweetWing cranks, and a King Kog on the White Industries hubs. Swapped to a Manitou Black coil fork.
Bottom Line:The longer fork is no good for climbing, seated, but since that doesn't really happen on the SS, it's great. The old HT lives on and is an absolute hot rod as a 21lb singlespeed, even with a 4.5lb fork and fat tires!

Strengths:Pure artwork, this 96' model is the most beautiful frame ever! Very effective, stiff,... the biker's best friend!!
Weaknesses:Cracks! Mine is cracked near the bottom bracket and makes an awful noise!! Sad, but I will always keep it even if it is now hung on the wall... as an artwork!
Similar Products Used:No one can be compared the HT !!
Bike Setup:Magura HS22 Race Line, XT, Roox, Control Tech, Mavic Ceramic, Stout, DT, Specialized saddle, Sachs, X-Lite...
Bottom Line:I saw the bike for the first time in an ad in MBA. I fel in love and when I came back from holidays, I searched for one in second hand. I found one almost immediately (which is rare for such a product) for half the original price. I've been riding it for almost 8 years. It's been a close friend ;-) for so long, and now it is dissasembled and placed in my living room. Respect!I wouldn't sell it at any price!

Strengths:Pin sharp handling , Great power transfer to rear wheels. Beautiful finish ,lovely bits of CNC maching and those welds are out of this world. Spot on geometry. It ooozes class and always draws a crowd
Weaknesses:Fragile , tubes can get dented easily , I've broken two , one around seat post clamp/ seat stay area another in the Chainstay / bottom bracket area. Both replaced under warranty. The original seat post broke this week but it was 7 years old and did a complete season of racing so thats being picky

Bottom Line:I run mine with Pace RC31 rigid forks ,, it handles single track like its on rails , its superb as long as things dont get too rough. Those dried out horse hoof holes are a complete nightmare , eyes rattle round your sockets. For road use I run it on Fatboys and it goes as good as a road bike. Racers dream bike.

Strengths:Lightweight & Stiff
Weaknesses:None, until now.....

Bike Setup:XTR components, Mavic Crossmax Sup Ceramic rims, Manitou4 forks
Bottom Line:I bought this bike in 1996 and used it for about 3 years with no problems. The bike was left unused until now, and last weekend, when I brought it out for a ride, I noticed a 2 inch crack on the headstem. Bike has never been ridden hard or brought to any nasty trails.

I thought Easton frames are famed for their strength and build quality....

I am now looking for a new FS bike. Any suggestions?

Bottom Line:OH BOY! This is by far and away the best handling hardtail that I have ever set my a$$ on. I am not the spring chicken or athlete that I was 10 years ago, but this bike gives me the confidence to ride like a madman. To be an aluminum frame, I am extremely surprised at how forgiving it is. It doesn't beat the hell out of you like so many other frames that I have owned. I just wished that I had sucked it up a long time ago and shelled out the bucks for this work of art. Just take a look at the machined rear triangle (beautiful). I always wanted one, and now I have it. This will be the last hardtail I ever buy, period! Purchased At:Cantina Mountain Bike Shop
Strengths:Long Top Tube, Short Chainstays, Easton ProGram, large OD seapost, Point and Shoot steering, light but strong
Weaknesses:OnZa seatpost head. Custom front derailleur/clamp required, no upgrades. 1.25" steer tube (the best, but no upgrades available in forks)
Similar Products Used:'92 Manitou HT, 96 Manitou HT, Alpinestars Al-Mega, Cannondale Al, Fisher Pro-Caliber, Fisher Montare
Bike Setup:XTR derailleurs, right shifter, rings and cogs, SweetWings cranks, Speedplay Frogs, Sachs front shifter, Avid Arch Deluxe brakeset with Ultimate levers.
Bottom Line:The best hardtail frame ever made. The Tomac Buckshot is a re-make, that may be pretty damn nice, too... I'll have to get one after this frame buys the farm...six years and running on it though.

The '92 version had a higher bottom bracket, but handled better than the later versions with the machined chain/seatstay yokes...the head tube on mine split and Answer replaced it with the '96... so I guess the later version is the Second Best HT frame ever!

Price Paid: $300.00
Purchased At:Supergo
Strengths:Light, pretty, agile. Handles great. Suits an aggressive riding style well.
Weaknesses:Can't take too much abuse on the chainstays...this is the only frame I've ever had that failed on me. I'm not a heffer, either. I weigh 180 lbs.
Similar Products Used:Many.
Bike Setup:XTR, etc.
Bottom Line:I used to work as a mountian biking instructor in the local mountains, and I had this bike when I started. I loved the feel of the bike...it was very light, and very responsive.

However, after less than a year of riding, the chainstays had broken clean through - it looked almost as if someone had used a hacksaw and sliced through all of that delicate machining. To add insult to injury, the Manitou company did NOT stand by their warranty at all. It was a joke. After many phone calls, the manager of the store I purchased the bike from had to haggle with a Manitou rep to finally give me only $300 store credit for the frame, when Manitou's retail cost was far more.

This bike is a blessing, and a curse. Although it's the most fun frame I have EVER ridden on...it's also the only frame I've ever had that's broken on me. And it was quite an impressive break, too. If I hadn't noticed, I could have been seriously injured if the frame completely failed on me while I was riding.

Strengths:great performance!!! and it also is the most beautiful frame ever built, lightweight, cnc-machined bridge and dropouts (like on tomac-frames); makes other bikers envious!!!
Weaknesses:not built anymore; cable routing requires crossed cables on the top tube which destroys the clean appearance; small front triangle makes it difficult (impossible?) to shoulder the bike
Similar Products Used:Cannondale & Sunn team bikes
Bike Setup:`97 polished Manitou HT frame, '01 White Bros. XC-4, Sram, XT, Chris King, Answer, SLR,...
Bottom Line:This frame really was cheap! I bought it used in excellent condition for US$ 500.- including an XTR front der. and the original Answer seatpost. First of all, the frame looks great, but it also performs fantasticly, riding is so much fun with this bike!!! Before this frame, I had a C'dale team bike with Fatty fork, but this frame is more responsive, the White Bros. fork is as stiff as the Fatty fork. Overall, this frame makes you ride more aggressively, it makes you drift and jump a lot more. So, it simply makes you happier! So guys, if you can get one of these frames, don't hesitate, buy!!! Cheers.

Strengths:The best hard tail ever produced. Period.

Bike Setup:Full XTR, Judy XC long travel
Bottom Line:Bought it new in 1993 and have been riding it silly ever since. God, what a fantastic bike. Light, nimble in the technical stuff, stable at speed, stiff and efficient, beautiful to look at, a veritable two-wheeled miracle. The finish is stunning, the welds are even and fat, the machined bb and head tube and extruded chain stay ends are things of beauty. The only thing to sully an otherwise perfect bike is a somewhat weak rear der hanger. Hasn't broken yet, but after almost 8 years of use I'm getting nervous. But then how many bikes out there look and ride as good rolling out of the garage after 8 years as they did rolling off the bike-shop floor their first day? If you ever see one, bow down in reverence and homage. I'm getting a lump in my throat... I have to go now.

My god I love my bike, it's set up as a neo DH machine with short stem and riser bars and it is SO responsive. Tell it what to do, and it goes, it's supreme stiffess makes it chuckable, precise and confidence inspiring all at the same time. If I weren't a poor student I'd buy ten now just so i had enough to last me the rest of my life, I never want a different hardtail.

Thee Manitou HT frame has an EXCELLENT ride...predictable in every situation, Nimble yet forgiving...and LIGHT ( 3.0 lbs. ) However, be advised...if you weigh over 170 lbs. or you are hard on your bikee (trials or DH included), DO NOT purchase one! I cracked my frame in 4 spots in the course of 1 summer (98). The machining behind thee BB is very intricate and thin, and prone to breakage. ALSO...Answer IS NOT standing by theeir product...they aren't honoring the warranty. Be wary when buying Answer products! Ride on!

I have had this bike for a year and have bent and broken the derailler hanger twice but was able to bring it to the local bike shop and get it fixed with in a day for less than $20. I love the bike, it handles great and is the stiffest aluminum frame around. The frame looks great which is a big plus and weighs almost nothing.
Although I have never had any real problems with my hardtail just this morning I was riding with my freind who has the same frame just a year older
and the whole thing buckeld under him breaking in three spots and tossing him off in to the woods.
I saw what he did to his frame but still love the ManitouHTanyway, I'm giving it five stars.

for cross country riding, this frame is the one. all the good characteristics you hear about it is true. in fact, i like it so much, i have 2, one in california, and one in texas (which doesn't get used all that much and properly). manitou has since resolved the problem with weak dropouts, at least with the HT models. 97 and newer frames no longer has the machined out dropouts, it is now fluted, adding the necessary strength. i am 6'1, 190lbs, and have not had any problems with it. go get one!!

The Manitou HT is a great ride but unfortunately it is only as good as it's weakest point and that is the dropouts. I, too, have broken the dropout on the right side and was lucky enough to discover the cracks before the damn thing broke completely off. Rather than go through the agony of sending the frame back to Manitou for who knows how long (took 2 months to warranty my SXTI), I instead took the frame to a local metal fabricator and had them weld and reinforce the dropouts. Took 30 minutes and $25.00 and I was back riding the Sea Otter Coarse that afternoon. Weight changed by about 50 grams due to the new welds. I think my legs and pocket book can stand that.

The best hardtail ever built. This bike climbs like a mountain goat. It is super fast in the woods, but also holds up well at speed. All of my friends who have ridden it have fallen in love with it and want to buy one. The only downside is that it is very, very stiff. The frame quality is excellent. I have not seen another aluminum frame with this beatiful of welds. Also the cnc work on the bike by the bottom bracket is awesome. I mine broke today, I would definately buy another.

I have been riding a 17 Manitou Hardtail since July 1996 and have done at least 200 serious singletrack rides in the Rocky Mountain region. As well, the bike has accompanied me on more than six trips to Moab for various rides from Poison Spider/Portal, Gemini Bridge (starting from the bottom), Top of the World, Porcupine Rim from the Town of Moad (36 Mile loop), etc, etc. This is probably the stiffest frame I've ridden. I am around 200 lbs and quite a load on wheels, but the Manitou has withstood serious abuse. It is a 17 frame which is kind of small for my height 5'10, but this has not diminished the sheer pleasure of riding such a high quality aluminum steed. It is fitted with XT components, Control Tech stem, Syncros Seat Post and Hugi/Mavic Wheels. It weighs in at about 24 lbs.Climbing on the Hard Tail is a thrill. The size and weight make it easy to throw around and track the proper line. However, on the climb, often times the stiffness of the frame is a negative. There is very little give in the bike while encountering water bars or other obstacles on the uphill. Without fail, I must get out of the saddle and crank of anything greater than 6 inches in height (on the steeps). Perhaps this is a function of my weight, but clearly the bike does not ease the impact of riding up steep rocky terrain.Interestingly, the bike is faster than most all other riders on the descent (including the FS dweebs). The HT has a point and shoot feel. Truly, where I look, the bike goes without hesitation. I am usually out of the saddle and on the pedals on fast scary descents, but the Manitou SX V shock takes the beating on the front end and keeps m ahead of the competition.I would reccomend this frame to anyone who is a serious rider and can afford the price. But, be prepared for a tight, precise and wild ride when you let it go.

I am thinking of getting another for someone special... This bike is definitely a high caliber weapon of the Mt. Bike industry!!!! If you're not on a Manitou HT you are definitely missing out!!

I love my HT. Super light, great workmanship, and climbs like a goat. I had a '96 HT before my '97. Ended up cracking clean through the rear dropouts on the '96. One week later I had a new '97 frame in my den. Thank you Answer.
Racing this HT is so fun. Cornering is its strongest asset. Weight the outside pedal, push on inside bar.....this thing rails nicely. Downhill is a bit harsh, but this frame is built for XC racing. Makes me work at picking nicer DH lines anyway.
Wonderful!

This frame is light and responsive. It's 3 lbs. and Easton tubing will make you fly up and down the hill. I like the sizing as well because the top tube is long and slopes down a lot for extra clearance. The rear end is a little stiffer than my old Cannondale's. So that it means it's stiff. It's an excellent racing frame but a bit pricey of course.
