Strengths:solid design, great suspension, relative light weight, easy to pedal up the hill and them destroys the down!
Weaknesses:needs a better rear shock. the fox vanilla is alright but would be nice to have the pro-pedal or lock out ability. no rear disk mounts.

Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $450.00
Purchased At:EbaY
Strengths:Umm, well, where to I start? Solid first, no noticeable flex (and this is a 1999 frame), smooth ride, soaks up ridiculos terrain, all while keeping the back wheel to the ground instead of bouncing around. Frame has several adjustments and is easy to set up & dial in.
Weaknesses:No disc on rear, but it is a 1999!
Similar Products Used:Trek 9000, Schwinn Moab, Iron Horse ARS700
Bike Setup:Fox Vanilla coil over, Marzocchi MXcomp, Full XT/XTR drive train, Race Face components & cranks(evolve XC), Custom rimset; D521 back/Sun 0degreeXC front on ringle hubs, FSA DH pig, WTB weirwolf/velociraptor, ODI, Hobson pro hub X2 split seat
Bottom Line:Well, maybe I am just really stoked to moving from hardtail to full suspension. I mean, after 10+ years of riding florida trails (which consist mainly of huge gnarled up roots everywhere)who wouldn't be? But like many of you reading this, I've watched Intense in the mags through the years gettin really good press. Well, I'm a really agressive rider and this frame elevates my game. Just a little pre-load and you launch over obstacles. It also soaks up monster hits all while keeping the rear wheel to the ground. Nuff said.

Bottom Line:Great XC/Trail bike.

For most of us, cross country/trail riders who love the downhills but still ride up, this is a great bike. Climbs well, adjustable, plush and controlled downhill.

XC racers look elsewhere, unless your doing endurance events.

Strengths:Brodie Electro
Great trail/jumping bike rides smooth and is fun to do some urban with it has some weaknesses in some minor parts for the price you pay. Also has high maintence but otherwise this is a great hard tail to ride around on.
Weaknesses:For 1200 dollars candian it doesn't have the best parts (my bottom bracket sucks)
Similar Products Used:Some other companys have better bikes for there money I hate to say it but go check out Norco I know someone who just got a norco 400 with a Dj 1 on it, its a sweet bike and if your considering Jumping get it!
But on the other hand if you want something similar to the brodie there is a norco sasqwatch and if you want the same thing with some better compnets check out the Rampage.
Bottom Line:All in all the brodie electro is a good bike even though you can get the same frame and better parts and a better fork with Norco. Like a marazochi z5 is the worst fork ever built by marazochi hate to say it I could have got a better bike from Norco, lates
But the electro is a strong smooth riding bike.

Strengths:adjustability, smooth rear suspension, excellent customer service
Weaknesses:no hanger, decals, suspension pin, sits tall, its expensive but worth it.
Similar Products Used:fsr,sugar,superlight
Bike Setup:z.1 dropoff,hayes disc,king, sun ringle,race face
Bottom Line:Even though intense advises against it, i have mine set up with a longer shock and uzzi dh shock plates. it now gets six inches of rear travel like the new uzzi slx. with this setup it is less adjustable and sits a little high. kind of like when you put the stock shock in the top hole. I am thinking of putting 24 inch wheels on it, but I don't know if they will work with the rear end. The bike rides awesome, a little heavy to climb, but still a very capable climbing bike. I have had some problems with the bike, I broke the suspension pin in half and they sent a new beefier one for free and it only took a week. The first time I ever rode the bike I tore the derailleur hanger off, I almost cried it took me three months to build and 15 minutes into the first ride I tore the hanger off. But again intense came through and sent me a new rear end, this time took a little longer. I can't say enough about the customer service, very helpful.
I have the bike setup as freeride/easy downhill and it works excellent, I hear alot of people say they set theirs up for xc and it also works well, but for me its too heavy for that. This bike is superfun to ride downhill and I end everyride with a smile.

Bottom Line:I love this bike

That said I had to freeken empty my bank account to get this frame and then sell organs to get the parts. It rides awesome now at 32 pounds. Rear shock was a little soft I am 6"1 190 pounds and 15 years old so I tend to break stuff and the extra weight is welcome. Up here in Canada it isn't really built for the free riding seen but it sure beats my Norco on the climbs.

Well that's all eh....

Weaknesses:The shock bushing wears out fast
Similar Products Used:Ventana El Terramoto, Trek Y Glide, Klien Mantra

Bottom Line:I was the first person in my area to get an Intense. I saw the bike in magazine adds and just had to have one. Thankfully when I got the bike built it rode sweet! I ride cross country but the trails are pretty technical and this bike does it all for me. Great climbing ability, the rear pivot loads up under chian tension and keeps the bobbing to a minimum. Not bad for a bike with almost 5 inches of travel. The ground clearance helps when you're flying over logs or rocks on the trail. The adjustable frame geometry is cool but I haven't messed with it to be honest. This bike has proven to be a fantastic trail bike and I would say if anyone is looking for a high end multipurpose bike this frame ranks at the top of my list. Now I wouldn't recommend buying an $1800 frame sight unseen but in this case I lucked out big time!!!

Bottom Line:This is a follow-up review and advise for anyone who is thinking of buying the SL.

When I first got this bike I built it up as heavy "freeride" bike. Before I knew it, I was adding more and more DH stuff and ended up racing it for a season. I didn't do too bad in sport DH but knew I had to go with something bigger (travel) if I wanted to move up. Two years later, I have retired the bike from DH and decided to make it my primary XC bike... WOW! What can I say? I've found this frame's true calling. In full XC setup with light (but durable) components, this bike ROCKS!

If you're looking to buy and build a bike with the Uzzi SL, here are some things you should know- To make this a great XC bike, use a crank with 22/32/42 rings. This is the best setup, otherwise your chain will rub when in in the granny gear. Set the rear shock in the TOP hole to give you a steep head angle. This makes your steering quicker and more precise- better for XC. I've also noticed that the rear suspension will bob alot less in this position. I use a 750 lb spring on my Fox Vanilla and have the prelode set real tight (I weigh 200lbs). This has significantly reduced pedal bobbing while keeping the rear respectively plush (much more so than today's XC dual suspensions) Adjust the seat tower back to give you a longish top tube and use a shorter stem (100-120mm). I also use an Easton monkey lite riser bar to bring the front up a bit. With the rear end, shorten the wheelbase to get better climbing performance and, again, to reduce bobbing. As far as a fork, go with a 4" travel model with coil/oil. Air may be lighter but it won't work as well with the rear (remeber, this ain't no Specialized FSR).

For freeriding or downhilling, use a fork with 5-6" of travel. Set the rear shock in the bottom hole. Increase the wheel base. Use a short stem (40-90mm). Skip the granny gear on the crank- viola!

I've done it all with the Uzzi SL and believe me- it works best as a big man's XC bike. Email me if you have questions.

Bottom Line:This is a update from my original review from 10/14/1997. Bought this bike in june 1997 and haven't had any problems, apart from some blown shocks. For me this is an exception to the rule. The Ventana FS was great but this ones built to last. sTill the same pivots as in 1997. No wear. Still the same paintjob. Apart from scratches, still great. Boutgh some new stickers. The old ones peeld. The new ones don't. Treid various setups and everytime got differrent bikes. I use it a lot in sandy ansalty dunes but this doesn't effect the frame, pivots etc.

Uzzi SL lasts for over two years with out any problems. Need more?

Bottom Line:I bought this bike 1 year ago (From Kalo, who I would not recommend doing business with). I read all the reveiws I could find at the time and had to make a big leap of faith buying it sight unseen. There was no where around Albuquerque that I could test ride one. I spoke with the people at Intense about which size frame was best for me and I went with the small (I'm 5 8"). From the day I received this bike I have loved it. I wanted something with more travel but didn't want a bike that would suck everytime I climb. This bike fits the bill. The suspension is very adjustable, I can have this bike feeling super squishy or more firm. The Fox vanilla RC is a great shock. Probably the biggest whining I see about this bike is the weight. Ya, its not as light as my girlfriends new K-2 Razorback (24.5 lbs) but the longer travel and super tough frame more than make up for that. Bottom line on this bike was that after owning several bikes over many years I finally wanted to get a true custom bike built up just like I wanted,,,and I got it. If you think this bike might be for you then get it, you will love it

Bike Setup:Z-1BAM CR @ 4", Hayes Disks, Bonty Race Disks,Fox Vanilla RC,Enduroraptors, M545 pedals, XT crankset, Titec KTiDH seat, Slimed tubes. An honest 30.1 lb. trailbike
Bottom Line:Bought this frame over a similarly equipped Tracer after weighing two complete bikes on the showroom floor. There was less than a half a pound difference (30.1 vs. 29.7). When I read about 26 lb. Uzzy SL's I wonder since I don't have anything really heavy or heavy duty. Anyway, I found the adjustable seat tower to be a huge advantage in setting up the bike for my bullfrog physiognomy. I used the middle hole on the shock link (70.5 degree head tube angle) and the long wheelbase setting. Moving the seat tube forward made the bike climb much better for me without the steering getting too busy.

Riding the bike for the first time I really noticed the higher bottom bracket, but I soon got used to it and I was instantly able to clear rocky trails and deep ruts that had stalled me on my old Mt. Vision. The shallower head tube helped me stay on line in rocky sections and I found myself actually climbing better on rough terrain because I could just put my head down and motor. On a rolling trail that I ride I cleaned the stream crossings for the first time, as the rocks and roots that had thrown me off on the old bike were not even felt with the Uzzy. Although the Uzzy is a full pound heavier than my old bike, it feels lighter, probably due to the Race Disk wheels which are really light.

I initially wanted an air shock in the back and air forks on the front, but ultimately I realized that I wanted the plushness and reliability of coils and oil at both ends, so I went with a Vanilla RC out back and 4" Z-1 CR's on the front and I'm happy I did. I didn't want the weight or complexity of the disk brakes as i thought them unnecessary for my laid back trail riding style, but I found that I had much more control on downhills over the V brake setup of my old bike. If you think that you don't need disks you should really try them on some steep and rough terrain before passing judgement.

So, bottom line is beautiful quality construction, not for weight freaks, very smooth and trouble free, and a surprising climber in rough terrain.

Bike Setup:

Bottom Line:This is an update from my initial review. I wanted to highlight some issues I think is important for initial buyers:1. First of all, I still love this bike...I went through a love hate period when I was trying to get it set up, but know that the geometry is where I like it, the bike rocks. I ride twisty single-track and short hilly terrain. Shortening the Wheelbase and sitting the shock-bolt to the lowest hole seemed to provide the best ride for the conditions in my area.2. Rear Derailuers: The Shimano M739 (98 XT) seems to work the best with the frame, SRAM might work also. I tried the 99 XT and XTR and the derailuer had a tendency to bang against the frame on bumps and what not. Unless this doesn't bother you...no problems there.2. Front Derailuer: Set it up like any derailuer, but appreciate the chain is going to drag on the chainguide when you are tunning it and the chain is on the smallest ring...perfectly normal.3. Cables: Get a manual or look at a bike that has been set up properly. I recommend removing the shock bolt and letting the rear suspension sag. Cut your cables to this length so that they can respond properly to the varying travel. The same goes for the chain. 4. Fork: 100-mm of travel seems like the best set-up for all around fun riding. I tried the 130-mm Bam and it made the front squirrely and climbing a hassel w/ 100-mm of travel the bike is much easier to control and handles well in all circumstances. In general, once I finally got the bike set up for me, I really like it. I do manage to bring up the rear when riding with my biking-pals except when going downhill. You can still climb anything with this bike, but just not as fast. It's a great bike that demands the rider be in shape...the Tracer w/ the Tazer's coil shock might be a consideration for you if you are less then 180-lbs. I think the SL is a great bike for us bigger guys for a fun-bike.Good Luck!

Strengths:
Cool Name, I could make this bike haul as* - but you know its the motor not the bike...
Weaknesses:
BB is too high, if you adjust the shock thru bolt to the lowest setting the chain rubs on the front der. It you set the thru bolt on the highest setting the bb is over 13. With the thru bolt set in the only workable position (middle) the bb ht is at least 1 too high. Net result is a bike that is skatey and difficult to hold a line on loose surfaces. It also feels as though you are sitting on top of this bike (as opposed to in it). Very ackward position. I've sold this bike and gone to a YBB and I am much happier. The Tazer is more of the same. I broke this frame once but the customer service was excellent. With the lightest stuff on this bike it was over 25.5 lbs.
Similar Products Used:

Bike Setup:
I had both the xc and sl options. Usually prefering the XC set up with a Fox Alps 4. With the SL I had both the coil over and Alps 5. Chris King, Avid, XTR, Thomson, Easton, etc.
Bottom Line:Was once the hot bike and brand but not anymore. There are alot of other bikes which weigh less, cost less, and handle better. I believe the Racer X is a better version than the Uzzi XC, and the new Giant, Fisher Sugar, and Specialized are better versions of the 4 bar/swing link. I enjoyed the bike for a while because of the chi-chi factor - but, eventually, this wears off.... The truth hurts.

Bottom Line:Although I've only had this bike one weekend and one ride I'm totally blown away by its performance. Granted my last ride was a Cannondale Super V and there is just no comparison between the two! I spent a gingerly six-hours building up my UZZI and the whole time I was in awe by the engineering that went into the frame. It is readily apparent that this bike can take some serious abuse. There are three ways one can alter the geometry of the bike: you can adjust the seat-post to lengthen the cock-pit; the rear-shock lower pin adjusts the head-tube angle, BB height, and wheelbase; also, it looks like you can adjust the wheelbase by changing the bearing location near the drop-outs(???). Once I finished building the bike, I was a bit skeptical about how it would perform due to the amount of cash I threw into it cause when I lifted it off of my bike stand I was quite 'impressed' by the weight, what a tank! However, once I jumped on it-- it felt like a 24-lb rocket. The ride was excellent, I took it to Wakefield-Accotink Park (a local ride for us DC Metro folks) and I could still handle all the ascents of old...granted it took a bit more effort. The pogo effect of the Z1 Bams was primarily the culprit for making the ascents more challenging. Tight Single-Track no problem, in fact (maybe its just me), but some of the more technical turns seemed easier on the Uzzi. In summary, the bike is worth every cent I spent on it and I'm constantly day dreaming of taking it on to all of my favorite trails. The geometry of the frame negates alot of the weight. I bought this bike cause I'm a 220-lb Clydesdale who loves riding cross-country; I rarely go around things only over or through and I was breaking everything on my old bike and bending rims constantly. Although, I only have one ride on this baby, I was throwing it around as hard as I could and I don't think I even challenged the frame. Granted I'm no pro-biker, I just out there for fun. I love this bike!!! Oh, I purchased my Uzzi SL through Kalo Mountain Cycles; if I had the cash for another bike, I give them my business again.

Being member of Da Locos, Kranked-type of riders, this bike gets abused quite a lot, I even race DH and Boarder cross on it. But even after a hard day of abuse, it smiles at me asking me for more! This is one SM bike, who can take a lot, and I mean a lot. I also ride Xcountry with it, and hammer it pretty hard, still it rules above everything else I've ever ridden. I wanna thank Jeff and everybody else at Intense for the pleasure they are giving me everytime I go out and have a blast on my bike. I felt entirely shafted and at the short end of a rope because I had to front the full sum of money before anything was done. I Made the initial order from KaloMTB sometime in early JUNE, 1998. I was told at the time that it would take about 1.5 to 2 months MAX. Delays, delays, delays..... I was given the complete run around until I finally was told that my package was shipped (this was about SEPTEMBER 3-5th, 1998!). This was obviously mis-information which got me excited to finally get my bike but boy was I surprised to recieve my package on OCTORBER 21st, 1998! The package was actually shipped on October 10th or so. Oh it doesn't end there though, far from it! The package was incomplete. It didn't include pedals, lights, gloves and a couuple of extras I ordered that were forgotten. I was willing to overlook this becasue Daddy got himself a new toy! I talked to Bret right away and was told yes he would get the missed items off to me ASAP(yah right). I called him back in mid November to inquire about the package once again and to pass around some ideas about getting my front Hayes brake to work better. To his credit he ultimately offered to upgrade my used front Hayes to the *very* soon to be released Hope pro for the new difference. I was ecstatic about this and told him to wait off on sending the remaining items until the Hope pro arrived in THREE WEEKS TIME ACCORDING TO HIM. That was on November 18th. Fast forward to April 6th, 1999! I finally got my package of lights and hope disk but still no TIME ATAC's! I called him and The word for the ATAC's was another wait of about a month (this is KaloMTB time so I think you double it and add 16 like Fahrenheit to Celcius conversions ;-)). Ok at this point I lost it. I had continuously been blown off, and essentially used for 10 months! It is really unfortunate that this transaction had to happen this way. Unfortunate for me at least. Feedback from KaloMTB is the biggest problem. Going 5 months without anything, not even a simple e-mail is no way to treat a customer who just spent a small fortune. Bret seems to me like a very nice guy who may start with the right intentions but along the way really gets sidetract and loses touch with customers. He is very knowledgable but as far as my experience, I cannot refer others to him. I know every bike mail order house has bad stories about them but it seems to me most of them aren't this bad and most get dealt with promptly and rectify the situation. In my case I experienced a year delay on some components, never saw other components, and left the deal with only one request of getting a bill sent to me for record. Apparently nothing has changed because I requested this in May '99 and now it is almost August. I could be one of the unlucky ones but with so many coincidences it just doesn't seem likely. The worst part of this ordeal was that I felt essentially powerless to get the product shipped because the ball was in his court so to say because he had the money! All in all if I had things to do differently, I definitely would! For starters, a different shop would get my business. I am not the type of customer to get angry at some delays because I know how the bike industry works (delays are common and I come to expect them) but this was just completely unreal. bottom line from me: shop KALOMTB.com and be warned. People will be pissed at this review because I know he has a lot of support; he had my support too until about february 1999 when I finally decided things were just unacceptable! anyway, enough of this. Time to ride my baby. cya

I have had it out on about ten rides, and I can't believe what I've been missing. I love this bike. It fits like a glove. I have never been more comfortable. My bike is a medium 18 inch black and silver anodize pointed by a Marzocchi Z-1 BAM with progressives and 10wt oil and suspended by a Fox Vanilla-R coil/oil with a 850 spring for support.
Bottom Line:Being a rider who not only uses the bike for off road pleasure and exercise, I also use
it as my daily commute transportation to and from work, as well as my vehicle of choice
for getting me where-ever else I have to be. The suspension is infinitely tunable allowing me to ride the streets in the super plush mode and off road in the instant response setting with everything in between. The cocpit and bottom bracket height are also adjustable to fit almost any riders body type; short legs, long arms, etc. I currently have 1993 miles on the bike and have had no maintanence problems whatsoever.
My only complaints are the decals, there where air pockets under all of them and you can peel them off. Clear coat them on the gloss frames and dull coat on the anodize ones would give the frame a much cleaner and professionl looking appearance. Come on guys its your name on the thing. The other minor complaint is the cable routing. A completely sealed cable system would be much better with the cables running under the top tube to the brake and shifter. Other than those two trivial items the bike is a dream to ride and own.

This is a killer bike! It handles tight singletrack like no other bike I've ridden and it climbs exceptionally well also (weighs about 26.5 lbs.). I got a deal on the new Magura Louise Disc Brakes and I'm glad I popped the extra dough for them. They make this rig a joy to ride in any type of conditions and really accentuate the handling of the bike. With all that said, this bike really turns heads as well. I didn't buy it becuase it looks cool but its fun to check out the double takes you get while riding it.

My frame was delivered to my local shop on Friday, and I have been smiling ever since. Right out of the box, the frame got stares from everyone in the store. This baby is bad! Joy (as I named her) is ball-burnished with red stickers. Uncertain if it was the ethical thing to do, but forced to because of a lack of funds, I raped (as my mechanic stated) my '96 GT Avalanche. Azonic riser bar, Syncros double-hinged stem, XTR brakes/shifters/f + r deraileurs/bottom bracket, Crossmax wheels, WTB saddle. To compliment the 4 1/2 rear travel, I paired it with a White Bros. DC110 for 4 1/2 of travel in the front. Actual Weight=27.2 lbs. WHAT A RIDE! People who don't know THINK the bike is bad. People who do know KNOW the bike is bad.I brought Joy for her first ride on Saturday, and I have been high ever since. Incredibly plush and predictable. Technical lines where I would have been forced to bail on my hardtail, she plowed right through. I WAS SIMPLY AMAZED BY HER CONFIDENCE. I was taking 6 ft. drop-offs on my hardtail, and can only imagine what I'll be tackling now. The plushness has not limited my riding in any way, although you will notice slight bobbing when pedaling. This bike will take you to the next level.Nothing but perfection, so 5 chilis. Will update with more miles...

Allright sorry I've left this off far too long. Soon after I posted this reveiw I called intense and talked to Mike there. He was very very helpful. He pointed out that the alignment problem is not due to mis welded parts but because the cartrige bearing was not properly fit to the machined aluminum. Once the bearing is pressed in it should be totally solid. the reason why the swingarm is popping it out is because this frame is also setup to fit a 140mm rear axle. Therefore useing a 135mm axle puts a slight amount of force on the bearing. Anyway before I bore you all with the detials, the problem was immediatley resolved by sending me a seatstay linkage. It got to me asap and I was very appreciative of this. I haven't found time to install it yet but when you look at the detail on this bike's linkage it is outstanding. He also sent me a spring which solved my problem of being undersprung. In the mean time, I am thouroughly impressed with the service. I also got a couple more rides in on this thing and wow-it is a big adjustment to a bike this plush. That is a good thing though. It opens a whole new realm of comfort. You do have to get used to it though and ride it as a plush bike or else it can kick you in the ass if you treat it like a hardtail. The only negative side to having 4 front and rear is that on crawling steep decents, the rider really has to compensate by pushing really far back. You can do anything you could on a hardtail with this bike but you just have to ride it slightly different and besides this will get you there in comfort and style as well! I'm sure I will keep you updated becasue I am totally pumped about this bike. Oh yah and as far as the hayes front brake, I have ordered a new hope pro brake for the front only and I'll let you know when/If I ever get it.....

Allright, so I finally get my bike....FINALLY! I had it built with the vanilla TC shock which is really really plush. If intense offers a vanilla air I might consider that now but we'll see(1/2 to a full pound difference). I matched it with the only fork that belongs on this bike....Z1 bam. baby it's a plush machine. I got the hayes disks on there and so far I have mixed reviews(I'd consider the Louise now instead). no maintainance prob's so far on the brakes, just slow speed modulation under heavy braking is inconsistent. I have some complaints on the frame build itself so far though. The chainstays are welded imporperly so the dropouts are wider than they should be. Put the wheel on and the bearing pops out on the horst link a bit. doesn't affect the ride but for a very high cost frame such as this I expect alignment. I was told intense had worked out alignment problems but I would say they haven't. Also the seat tower is a slight bit off alignmet-no one but me would notice very minor things like this though. I went over the frame checking alignment everywhere with weight bobs, rulers etc. I will warrenty the chainstays and then let you know what I think. This bike is in a class of its own alongside a few others as far as overall design, function, and reliability. On the latter there, for a long term service free bike, only bearing pivots whould be used. I don't understand why every bike manufacturer doesnt use these. They are simple enough and you can get slim rollerbearings that are really light like on the chuck FS so I don't think there is an excuse not to use them. The only issue is cost and that can only totall an extra $100 on a frameset. Anyone buying a full suspension bike should get needle or ball bearings if you are spending this kind of money. They are so reliable and they make the ride soo smooth and plush. This bike is natually not a huge climber but it will make it up the hill no problem. Having the compression adjustment on the vanilla is a really nice feature to help for those long climbs. That's it for now...I'll get back to you on the warrenty service. P.s. I am judging this bike not based on the category it belongs to (chuck, turner rfs, etc.) so I give four cillis for now

They Don't get any better than this. For a freeridish bike, I have ridden just about everything, and nothing comes even close to comparing. Its got an ultra plush ride, the bike is perfectly tuneable, and they look oh so cool. And to top it all off, when I recently got it into my head that I needed to go off about a 13 ft. drop off onto flat ground, I bent the shock pin just a little bit (not to mention all the other stuff I did to the bike, see my rview on ESP 9.0 derailleurs, they didn't do so well). I bought the bike used and therefore don't have all the warranty stuff for it, so when I called Intense about getting a new pin, I expected a hassle, but on the contrary they were incredibley cool about it. I love this bike more than anything, everyone should go buy one (or two)!

I've finally got my Uzzi-SL, with XT/517's/SC90's.......a very similar spec to some other bikes here. I've no idea what it weigh's but it feels around 27.5. This has to be the ultimate all round bike. I've taken mine on 40 mile day rides up large hills, raced XC and blasted down a few DH courses. I too have had a few problems. The shock mounting pin has developed play with the shock bushing. Thats what caused the shock to rub on the seat tower. I also think its caused by the spring, mines an 800x1.75, but another Uzzi-SL has a 650x1.75. This is the same size frame, but it gives more room between the seat tower.Even so this has to be the best bike I've ever riden......and its mine. Cool.

Play develops in the rear shock mounting pin. Intense sent me a new one but the play is still there to a lesser degree. If Intense finds a fix for the '99 rigs I hope it'll work on the '98's ( I won't be able to afford another frame for awhile). Like Bob, I also had problems adjusting my XTR rear derailleur. The fix I came up with was to put in a longer (B tension) screw that I got from a hardware store to move the cog away from the cassette- works perfect. Other than that, I love this bike. It's a great singletrack or fire road bike, and although its just a descent climber, remember, whatever goes up must come down. This bike makes me live for the weekends.

This bike is truly a work of art. What more could a person want from a full suspension rig? I have been riding my SL for about 4 months (after 2 long months of waiting for a custom paint job). I chose the Fox 5r for the rear and a Manitou X-vert for the front. Last year I had to pick and chose lines, this year I ride over or though the same obsticles. Since this was to be my dream bike I fitted it with only the best parts, still weighs a hefty 32 lbs. It is a large frame however with 2.35 Kujo tires. You will have to play with the pressure in the rear shock for quite some time before the bike becomes truly dialed in. Adjusting the seat triangle makes a big difference also. No matter what a x-country rider tells you this bike shines on the downhill. You will become a copilot because trust me, your just along for the ride! If you don't like speed buy yourself an Ellsworth (sorry dad). Since this is my first full suspension experience I don't have alot to compare it to. But I certainly know what a Cadillac rides like! I have been riding my SL for the last 9 month. I must agree with all the reviews ,that this is one of the best bikes I have ridden! I would like to address the problem that Bob was having adjusting the XTR rear deraillure. I was having the same problem with the cage and pulley rubbing aginst the cog. I found that you must load the bike to test out the adjustment. You can not adjust the deraillure on a bike stand. I figure that when the bike is load with weight the deraillure is at the correct position (GO FIGURE). Also I have noticed that the shock mount seem to develop about 1/8 gap which caused my shock to rub on the seat tower.I used teflon tape to fill the gap. Sure there is a few minor problems with the frame but over all a great riding bike.

Bottom Line:

This is a difficult review because I have such mixed feelings on this bike. I ordered the SL from Supergo at the end of July. It came on a timely basis, but they sent the wrong spring and wrong color seat tower. That isn't Intense's fault, but was the start of the fun. Once I got all the parts I noticed that my Thomson seatpost wouldn't fit in the seat tower. I had to do the same thing that a prior reviewer did, that is, hand ream the tower so that the seatpost would fit. Then I assembled everything, but couldn't get the rear shifting dialed in. After about pulling my hair out I finally took it to a shop and had the drop outs measured and sure enough, the rear derailleur hanger was out of whack. I might expect that from a Taiwanese bike, but not a frame costing $1850. My original call to Intense suggested that if the hanger wasn't bent too much, to simply bend it back. Ya, right. Two grand for a frame and I'm supposed to bend the hanger. Remember, this is an aluminum bike without a replaceable hanger. By this time I was totally pissed off and ready for blood. I sent a nasty e-mail to Intense outlining the problems and suggesting what they could do with their piece of sh*t bike. The first thing the following morning, I got a call from Mike at Intense. That's where this story starts to change. He let me vent for awhile and then proceded to go out of his way to make things right. I won't go into all of the details, but Mike saved Intense from a very angry customer. He didn't give me any crap, he just made the situation right. I'm still concerned about the quality control aspects of the company, but their customer service, at least from Mike was beyond compare. Once I got the new strut from Intense, the bike came together nicely. It rides really well, is super plush and seems really well balanced. The ride is everything I had hoped for. With high end parts (XTR, Raceface, Chris King, Magura, Z-1's) the bike weighs in at 27.5 lbs. It's a little heavier than my similarly equiped Santa Cruz Heckler, but the ride and control is superior. Now that I'm through my initial problems, these points come to mind. The B-tension tab is not within spec for Shimano derailleurs (Intense knows this and is working on a solution). This means my 12 x 32 cassette bumped into the guide pulley in granny gear. No amount of adjustment of the B tension screw or P spring in the derailleur would alter this fact. The solution was to take the Sachs Plasma off of my Santa Cruz. The Plasma works like gold. Its constant shift distance from the cogs is a blessing for this type of situation. The second issue is that there is no replacable derailleur hanger. This makes me a little nervous. I crashed a couple of weeks ago (hey, I'm no Tomac) on a local downhill and put a good sized dent in the strut. If the aluminum bends that easy (I wasn't going fast at all), then the hanger could be bent real easily and I'm back to my original problem. Well, that's it. The bike rides as advertised, the adjustability really does work and the company seemed genuinely concerned about my problems with the bike. The downside is that for close to two thousand for a frame only, the thing should be perfect. With a little tweaking of their product it will be unbeatable, but for now.....three stars.

I've been riding this bike for about a month and my conclusion is that this bike is totally awesome! It's unreal-very plush, very forgiving(helps me out of trouble where I would normally bail), and for a 28 lb. full suspension rig it's a descent climber. SPECS: Standard vanilla R in back, long travel Judy SL up front,XTR drive train and derailleurs, mavics with mythos xc tires- basic cross country setup. THE RIDE: Very plush.I'm running over bigger bumps and roots and making it thru more technical stuff than I did before. Because the bike does'nt bounce when it's dropped, it does'nt kick you up out of the saddle when you go over big stuff. They say the steering is slower than some bikes but I can't tell.HITS:The bike just looks killer! Great paint job and beautifully polished rear triangle.Adjustable swing link, wheel base and top tube. MISSES: Play that developes in the shock mounting pin creates a clunking sound in the rear end. It does'nt affect the riding but when you drop that much cash on a bike, it better be perfect. Intense sent me a new pin that reduced the effect but it's still there.I think the pin needs to be redesigned to look like the front bushing (two piece, shoulder type but only longer. Hi!
Just a few words regarding the Uzzy SL I bought about 2 weeks ago. First this bike really climbs!!! Don't be afraid to attack long hills with it, it is not bad at all: if I was expecting great downhill riding with this bike (which I sure got too), I am really stocked by the ease of the climb (at least versus my previous schwinn sweet spot). The bike might steer a bit slow, but It is just added confidence when it comes to speed. Actually it gives you too much confidence in the way that it saves you of most of your mistakes and incites you to look for the unreasonnable (this already conducted me to 2 crashes at way-too-high-for-my-body speed). For the weigh addicts, my bike full XT / 517 / WB sc90/ 8.0shifter / 636 DX pedals hits only 28.5 which is honnest..
Last thing, if anybody has set-up advices (for the vanilla, standart spring w/ my 150#), mail me. Thanks. Also, I do not really care myself, but where is the second bottle mount which raised praise from testers in a magazine I forgot the name?

Took my Uzzi SL to its first race and entered both expert XC and sport DH on the same bike. Of course, I swapped many parts for each events, but the point is, the frame handled everything that the rocky/muddy course threw at it. While others were struggling with riding over wet and muddy obstacles on their minimalistic XC rigs, I just floated over them... On the DH side, people were struggling with their heavy DH machines made heavier and slower with mud....I put 1.5 mud tyres in the back and mud clearance did not even become an issue. My Intense was the ONLY bike that was being ridden in both events. So how did I and my Uzzi do?? 1st place, expert XC; 3rd place, sport DH. This bike RULES.5 chillies each, total of 10 chillies!

I agree with most of the reviews below in that the SL is a superbly manufactured, and more importantly, one-hellofa-ride bike. But I do have a couple of complaints. One is that the seat tube on my frame was not reemed properly so that the seat post would not go in past the half-way point. I asked Intense and got a very short, not-so-informative email back agreeing it was not reemed properly and not much more. Hmm... not wanting to screw up the whole seat tower subassembly I went at it very gingerly with some coarse emery paper for hours... ended up with very sore fingers. Service is probably great in the US, but their international policy definitely is not up to par. Especially for a frame costing so much. Otherwise, the best looking and riding piece of machinery I've pedaled on. Period.

Thought I would peruse MTB since I hadn¹t in the last 5 months or so. I was a little surprised to see how many people had written in about the Uzzi. The Uzzi SL is worth every accolade it has received. It is a rare occurrence to purchase a mountain bike product that exceeds the consumers performance expectations. It is still more uncommon for that purchase to continue to perform like new a year down the line. It is down right remarkable for that product to continue its performance, maintenance free. And finally, it is unheard of that this great product comes from a small cottage industry company with a helpful and friendly staff backing it. Mountain bikes are expensive and not all stand up to the abuse inherent to the activity. The Uzzi SL, one year after it¹s purchase, has shown no signs of wear, except the expected scratches. All the pivots are still moving absolutely friction free and with out any play. I scoff at the multi pivot, four bar linkage naysayers. All you sloppy pivot harbingers of doom are certainly eating crow now. Every review of the XC, SL, DH, and M1 have been great. Pick up the latest issue of Mountain Bike International, again another resounding great review. When you finally invest in a product that lives up to it¹s claims, you cant help but want to support that company. There is no better full suspension bike. Great job Jeff.

Stuck a Marzocchi Z-1 on it and it rides like a Caddillac on two wheels! PLUSH! that is the one word to accurately describe this ride. With the correct springs in the fork and on the rear shock, bobbing is minimal and it climbs pretty well for a bike with this much travel and so smooth a ride. I was riding a Trek Y-22 (I still love this bike) but with the URT design, I was still soaking up the the bumps through the legs. The Uzzi smoothens out the bumpiest roads to where you can barely feel them. The Uzzi has given this old man with a bad back a smoother ride and will allow me to ride for years to come

Well, I like this bike. That's a given fact. There is definit room for improvement though. I've never been able to climb efficiently as a hard tail which is something that is not an issue with my buddy's Ventana. The SL needs to be tighter on the single track too. I rode this at the Sea Otter, and wished I would have chosen my hard tail. I'm not into racing to win, more so to have fun fun fun. I think there are just some trails better suited to not bring this one on. For the DH's though, SUPER! Plush-O-Rama. I couldn't even feel the trail at times. I was floating. This is my always ride when I become a fat old man, which I'm well on my way to becoming.
Overall, a very good bike! 4 solid chi-chi's

I got my Uzzi SL in November of last year so I've had for about 5 months so far. After having ridden it for 5 months without any problems I would have to say that it's an awesome bike. I have mine with a vanilla coil shock and a Z1 BAM fork and the suspension works great. you can pick the bike two feet off the ground and drop it and it doesn't bounce. Going downhill on this bike is amazing, the suspension just soaks up all the rocks and bumps. It's not the lightest bike, mine is probably between 28-30 pounds. It's built up with all RaceFace parts except the brakes and deraileurs which are XT, Sachs shifters, MacineTech/Sun Ryno Lite wheels. The bike sits up kinda tall with a 110mm/10 degree Kore stem and 1.5 rise RaceFace riser bar. I'm still experimenting with different bar/stem combos. There is also alot of adjustibility in the frame. The angles are adjustable as is the bottom bracket hieght and top tube length. Service from Intense has been great. They sent me an owners manual and a free Tshirt. The only problem with the frame has been a little play between the shock mounting bolt and the swing link. I spoke to intense and they said they will be sending me a new larger diameter pin for the link. So;
1) the frame: amazing attention to detail and machining, lots of adjustibility
2) the ride: great suspension, incredible ride
3) the service: excellent support, helpfull people at Intense

This bike is truly the best! One thing that kind of worried me when I was
looking into a long travel design was the dreaded pogo effect when climbing.
I took a chance and decided to go for it. This thing is every bit the
climber as my Turner Burner XC, but 3 times the bike on the downhill. The
way to go is coil rear shock, and Z1 in front, mine weighs 28.25 pounds,
and flies over just about anything. If you like to ride up and haul ass
down, this is the bike for you.

The Uzzi SL is simply the best!!! the best bike I have riden and I m laughing all the way everytime when I ride it off-road. I was really surprised that it handles better than my Klein Attitude and Gary Fisher Paragon and it climbs better too. I never expect it to climbs so well, thought it would probably bop abit but I was wrong when I was climbing I couldn't felt a thing. I was really happy that I bought this X'Mas present for myself though it cost me all my hard earned money but it was worth it.;o}

I bought the XC, not the SL, so I don't have the 4.5 of swing-link travel. No complaints, though, 'cause the bike is so excellent. With a new seat-stay and swing-link, it becomes an SL. Spec'd it without a shock, and put a Noleen NR-1 in there, a Marzocchi Bomber Z2 up front, and the thing is just perfect. Plush, plush, plush. The ultimate cross-country weapon, for real courses, not the groomed NORBA ones. Climbs almost as well as a hardtail, goes downhill alsmost as well as an M1. I will never go back to a hardtail, nor to any other bike but an Intense. The build quality is incredible, not to mention the stares you get on the trail (and even from roadies on the ride home). Men envy you, women swoon. Get Intense, and you won't be sorry.

I have an UZZI SL that is equipped as follows: Alps5, King/Mavic wheels, XTR cranks, ders., Sachs shifters, White SC90, Avid brakes and levers, Thomson seatpost, Flite saddle, al. bar and barends. This bike weighs exactly 26.1 lbs. Point is: you can make a long travel (for all around riding) bike weigh a reasonable amount. Most hardtails weigh around 24 - 25 lbs (or more) and this thing flat out out climbs, descends, and everything in between. Sure a rigid, SID equipped bike may get from point A to point B quicker, but not when there is a point C, D, E, F.....Truly a work of art and I am happy to own this bike.

Sublime. With a Profile carbon downhill bar and Z-1 Bam front fork
this bike turns rugged downhilling into butter. The slight understeer
makes the Uzzi a dream in downhill singletrack (Mt. Pinos near Frazier
Park) in that it doesn't feel twitchy or hyper-sensitive. Just point
and shoot. In more techical runs a new technique can be perfected by
bashing straight over obstacles. Technical climbing can be improved
by cranking the rebound damping to a level of stiffness that essential
turns your plush dreamboat into a 28 pound hardtail. Production and
tech support from Intense are first rate. The Marzocchi Z-1 is perfectly
matched to the Uzzi, balanced and blush, never whippy. My only complaint
is the clunk where the rear shock attaches to the frame. There's a
small error in sizing that can be remedied with teflon tape. It fills
the space and eliminates the problem. I can't for Mammoth this summer!
The frame was purchased at I. Martin Imports in Los Angeles. They have
Intense bikes in stock and know the product well.

Ok, trying not to sound pretentious I thought that some people may be interested in an update on my bike. I have owned the Intense for almost five months now. The burning question, how has it held up? Not one problem, nothing has gone wrong so far. This beauty rides as perfectly as she did the day I rode her off the lot. I wish I could say the same about my girlfriend. I ride hard, averageing four rides in the dirt per week. I jump this bike, I crash this bike, and yes, I even climb this bike. No problems. I love this bike so much that I have erected an alter for it in the middle of my livingroom. One of the reviewers mentioned that this bike will out perform the rider. It is true. I am going so fast compared to my old ride that I am crashing all over the f--(CENSORED BY MTB)-- ing place. Finally, after I had some nail size cactus quills surgically removed from my arm in the local emergency room I gave in and bought some pads, talk about pretentious. I rode this bike, equiped with the downhill Missles and decked out in body armour, down the local monster ride, the San Juan. Ate shit, but lived. This bike should be outlawed, but thank god the authorities haven't figured out yet that it's a deadly weapon. Or actually, it's more like an illeagal drug. It is such a high to ride this bike that you'll never want to come back to reality. Jeff Steber IS A GOD! Oh yea, one complaint, I cant get any INTENSE stickers. I need them for my shrine, Jeff?

I have my Uzzy now for 2 weeks, yesterday I placed a Z1 BAM. Real Frame weight 2,660 gr. with Vanilla R shock add 620 gr. Complete bike with XTR comp. King front hub Sunn CR17A, butted spokes, roox riser bar(very flexy I will Change it ), rear hub xtr, Post Thomson, Avocet O2 (I haited, I broke my really confortable Bersecker), Specializedspecial edition Tires...A few other goodies 12,800 gr. thats 28,2 lb. I´ll try to make it lighter but that´s not the reason of the bike. Construction is awsome very STRONG, all details beautiful, paint job awsome (no comparison to my Ibis Szazbo red).
THE RIDE: Well incredible...going up the first couple of days I needed to block the shock by the damping because of slight bobimb, 2 more rides and I put it more slow but not block and I already learn to keep my pace no bobimg...sprinting really nice on the back, I am learning with my Z1 since there is only one ride on the front. Really technical uphill... There are places that I never climbed before, my friend racer with his Klein couldn´t make it. Well down hilling is WOAWWW! I just look for the fastest cornering the bike takes care of the grown....No comparison to my oolther bikes , Novara Team hardtail and the Szazbo. On really technical DH is beautiful too, on single tracking is a little bit slower in steering , but I can correct that chinging my head angle I did not tryed yet, but it looks possible. Think that I am taking my time on setting the bike specially the raiser bar position. I really love the bike yes is not light, but I know that I can do everything with it except race a XC of course FUN really fun, I am just jumping or cornering with my wheels skiding and still in control Woaw again. I give 5 chiliees because is the kind of bike that I was looking for and it really works. ( at INTENSE are very helpful and nice the only complain is to tell real weights, but that´s a comon disease on the majority of bike...makers, sellers, components etc).
Thanks too every body thet helped me to choose that bike is really fun.

The SL is, together with the Ventana Marble peak FS, the best suspnsionbike I've ever owned. As David stated, it's a bit more slow steering on the ascents then the Ventana but you can really turn up the speed on this bike. This bike is capable of outperforming it's rider. In which you find yourself in situations where you've never rode a section this fast, which always scary and fun of course. Craftmanship is great and the pivots smoooooth and build for the long run. The five peperoni's are for a nice company with a great bike and the fact that I've found myself making noises like vrooooom and vrooaar when I rode it

This is an incredible frame. 4.5 of travel. It has a slightly progressive rate. All the pivots run on sealed bearings making the action smooth and 100% stictionless. You can adjust head angle and top tube length. I had an LTS for over a year and wanted to move up in performance. The LTS is a great bike, one of the best, but I believe the Uzzi SL out performs the LTS. It is more active under breaking, which is a very important consideration for any jammin gnarly descents. This bike can be converted for downhill raceing and the fox coil shock out performs the Rock Shox super delux. The suspension is so sensitive that if you pick up the bike about two feet off the ground and drop it on its wheels it doesnt bounce. Try this with any full suspesion bike and I gaurentee the bike will bounce. Mate this with a Bomber Z1 and you have a bike on the cutting edge, nothing can beat it. Yes, it is biased towards downhilling, a little slugish on ascents but you can turn up the damping almost locking out the suspension, but is'nt downhilling the most fun any way? Intense is on to something with the bearing pivots, and they are a very good company to deal with. 5 pepers!!!
