Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $800.00
Purchased At:Cycle Works
Strengths:The frame! It's a great lasting starter setup that allows you to upgrade components slowly over time as things wear. This bike will take anything you throw at it. I may be biased but this is the one of the best feeling aluminum framed dirt jumpers on the market.
Weaknesses:maybe some of the components, but those are upgradeable and they have done a great job for me for a long while so no worries.
Similar Products Used:STP2, P1, P2, P3, Felt Jump Shot, Trek Jack, pretty much any bike a friend has had.
Bike Setup:2005 STP1 Frame, Azonic Strip Bar, LS Peaty grips, Shimano SLX crank, Primo Stricker pedals, mosh DJ seat, Holy Rollers on stock wheels (ryhno lites and formula hubs). Marz Dropoff Comp fork. Adding a RS Argyle 318 and a new wheelset in the next week or so to get ready for spring!
Bottom Line:You will think about riding all the time when you aren't on it, and you will forget about everything when you are on it!

Favorite Trail:my yard
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $800.00
Purchased At:Sonoma Bicycle Co.
Strengths:Good price, good parts, very solid frame
Weaknesses:Wheels, bar, pedals
Similar Products Used:my only DJ bike but I also ride a Nomad and a Fisher Paragon 29'er xc bike
Bike Setup:'08 stock STP 1 (DJ 1 fork)
Bottom Line:Great bike for the money. Solid parts, good ride, takes abuse no problem. Proven DJ bike geometry so it works well. Manuals very easily and can really be whipped in the air. Reasonable weight for what it is, good fork for DJ (not great for 4x though). Chain guide is pretty good though kind of tough to clean.
Wheels might be okay for most but I got unlucky. Mine were all screwed up; you can see the spokes were all twisted up and stripped out inside the rim so I blew out the rear wheel just by riding a parking lot with my 3 year old kid and doing a skid out in the first hour of riding. Pretty lame they didn't catch that in quality control as the wheels are otherwise pretty good and would last with a good build. Bar is way too narrow for me (I'm 6'1" and it's only 24.9 inches) so that had to be replaced. Fork takes a few days to break in, mine topped out like crazy the first couple rides but now is good, still super firm too which is nice as I have a tendency to over-jump doubles. Pedals are already letting go which isn't all that surprising considering how cheap they are.
Overall I'm very happy with the bike despite the wheel issues (for $800 with that fork you really can't complain. Heck, a new wheel and bar were only another $110). I only ride it on jumps and in my pumptrack where it does very well and seems to take abuse. As far as the ride goes, it accelerates quickly, turns fast and is maneuverable in the air. The fork takes big hits without harsh bottom out and the short chainstays make gaining speed on pumps really easy. Brakes are kind of crappy mechanical things but who cares about brakes on a DJ bike?
I definitely wouldn't recommend this bike if you plan on doing much trail riding. Tires are a little too street for my taste but work on the pumptrack (but are sketch when dirt jumping).
For 99% of people looking for a DJ bike this one will fill the bill.

Bottom Line:fantastic bike for the price and you only need to spend around $300 to upgrade the stock parts. The 08 model is going cheap now that the 09 model has been released.
If your still on the fence about buying this bike then i recommened you get off the fence and go buy 1.

Purchased At:Penn Cycle (Frameset Only)
Strengths:Frameset comes with a sweet multi-tone blue paintjob. chainstay horseshoe Super beefy. Big tubes, big welds
Weaknesses:rear disc gusset not too effective, some flex noticable. Personally, I'm no fan of zero stack headsets. Had quite a bit of chain-suck w/ raceface rings (WTF?)
Similar Products Used:94 Fisher SuperCaliber built as freeride

Bottom Line:A great ride if you like freeride or DS. Not the best on the XC trails. It'd definately handle big mountain & jumping just fine. Very compact cockpit, very fast, great cornering. I wouldnt say its my favorite bike (of 9) but its definately a fun ride. Not too much DH/DS around here, but its great on the streets. A longer seatpost (400+) could help it become a better xc ride. Otherwise its the perfect big-kids' BMX.

Strengths:2006 STP SS.the frame is super beefy and lite. maxxis holy roller tires are rad, sun rhino lite rims are strong and look awsome with black spokes and black hubs and non-machined black sidewall rims.Marzocchi dirt jam comp fork is nice and stiff for aurban and dirt jumping. hayse disc brake work great. everything is just STIFF STIFF STIFF.
Weaknesses:i bought a size 14" which is perfect for aurban riding and dirt jumping, but it is just too small to ride on trails effectivly. marzocchi dirtjam comp fork is too stiff for trail riding. it might aswell be a ridgid fork. maxxis holy roller tires, the tread is just not deep enough for trail riding. my local trails are covered with leaves and pinestraw so i slide out when i corner fast.(changed to panaracer FIRE FR 2.4, never slide agian, corners like its on rails.)
Similar Products Used:specialized P series, trek jack, cannondale chase.
Bike Setup:Marzocchi dirtjam comp fork, sun single track w/ 9speed shimano xt hubs, panaracer FIRE FR 2.4 (huge tires),stock bars and stem, LX rear shifter, oury lockon grips(so soft),avid levers, stock post and seat.
Bottom Line:this bike is perfect for anyone who is into auban assualt and dirt jumping. if you intend to do trail riding also, i would go with the larger size if you are over 5'9". i like the single speed for auban and dirt jumping, but is a little too hard of a gear for trail riding. if i were you i would get a larger rear cog, or do what i did and add gears.( i should have got the one with gears in the first place.)

Weaknesses:STAY OUT THE THE DIRT WITH THIS BIKE, it is extremely unstable in the air when hitting dirt jumps, the length of the frame is great on the street, but horrid in the air.

Bottom Line:I have only rode a stock stp 2, and it was a pretty solid bike for the dollar. bottom line....if you want an off the hook stock stp...definatly go for the 06 stp1 (have not seen 07 yet) it'll run ya about 1100, but you will get dirt jam forks, and 6" hayes hydro's...only thing to change is the handle bar...it is way to low and narrow, and give the bike a heavy front end feel. or spend over $2100 to build one......

Strengths:The front forks are pretty nice for parks and such with some adjustability. I am fond of the tires as they give a very smooth ride and have decent grip.
Weaknesses:There are not many weaknesses on this bike the only few that I have found would be on the left side where the pedal shaft connects to the crank shaft the bolt there became loose and the peddal would fall off but I easily fixed that with some good lock tight. Another thing is when you compress and de compress the front suspension it makes a cliking noise I'm not sure what it is. And finally I found that the brake and gear lines tended to scratch or scrap up the frame when u turned the handle bars.
Bottom Line:I love my STP 1 it is everything i wanted a new bike for and it is a great bike for the money in my mind.

Bottom Line:this is an extreamly versitile bike, it is great in the air and on the ground,i have used it for light DH,4X,dirt jumping and XC,it did a great job at all of them, realise that it wont be great for DH because it is a hard tail and only has 120mm of travel but still does a reasonable job and that it isnt great for XC because the head angle is a little too slack and the seat cant come up to a good hight. This bike i think could be used by a huge range of riders, from the pro to the beginer, it is a hugely fun bike that i recomend to you all. Weaknesses:The pedals just plain suck. Should come with a chain guide too. I really dont care for the headset either, I couldn't get it smooth unless I took off the dirt seal.

Bottom Line:In stock trim this is a very capable bike of taking anything you can throw at it. So far the only thing I have broke is a rear derailleur and hanger. While there are a lot of other bikes that have cooler looking hydro formed tubes and lots of Bling Bling the STP is simple strong and well designed bike. I felt that the bike in stock was a little bit of a compromise between Street, Trail and Park not really doing all things really well. I converted mine to a park bike single speed and it really shines.

Strengths:pretty much the frame. it has perfect geometry for a play bike, yet is still a utilitarian mountain bike as pannier mounts are on the frame (not that anyone who owns this bike would use them), frame is a good combo of relatively light weight and strength, nice fat tubing w/ gussets, tire clearance not a problem for most people. truvativ hussefelt cranks rock. tires good for urban assault/ trials.
Weaknesses:terrible component spec for the '04-'05 models. weird sized headset is not a standard 1 1/8". (headsets for giant are a custom sized, made for giant by cane creek or fsa, but i haven't had a problem w/ mine) fork (marzocchi drop-off comp) is nothing but heavy metal with slow rebound. needs some real platform pedals. crap drivetrain except cranks. could use a chain guide for dirt jumping, especially if you do spins.
Similar Products Used:numerous old school xc hardtails tuned for freeriding, azonic DS-1, planet zebdi, specialized P-3, and other play bikes of the sort

Bottom Line:i was in the search for an aestheticlally appealing dirtjumping/trials/trail riding hardtail. after looking at the smaller custom builders and not finding anything, i looked at the giant website. it was exactly what i was looking for. this bike is a good all around playbike. it handles well on the trail, doing urban or jumping. the chainstays are perflectly short inspiring quick acceleration and easy manuals and wheelies. after the upgrades, my bike now weighs around 28 pounds and is more maneuverable and easily bunny hopped. the frame displays incredible stiffness whithout all the extra metal and weight of other jump hardtails. the front end tends to push around corners if you trail ride w/ a low saddle. this can be alleviated by raising your saddle or using a lower fork thus effectively increasing the head angle(reba is almost an inch lower than drop-off, yet still has 5mm more travel.) i give the frame a rating of 5(best i've ridden and best looking.) as for value i give it a 3 only because giant gave it a serious paint job and did some serious revisions to component spec for '06 such as chain guide and sram while the price stayed the same - damn! otherwise a good bike stock, perfect when outfitted with your own spec. so just buy the frame (it's available through a giant dealer) and build up your own spec.

Strengths:Fun, fun and more fun. Comes with great parts and setup and none of the compromises in parts or quality that many bike makers do to meet a price point. This bike is much more versatile than I expected. I even pull the Burley with it for short kids rides and a run to the grocery store.

I think the beauty might be the same length top tube I've liked for years, a short height for slow moves, short stays for climbing and slow moves and a head angle and wheel base that's stable at speeds and for landing.
Weaknesses:Original seat was not good for me, but that's a personal thing.

It is so confidence inspiring that it needs warning sticker reminding you to wear your arm protection as well as leg protection.

This bike should have existed when I was 26 and not 46 years old.
Similar Products Used:I did 2-3 test rides each of C-dale, Fisher, Kona and Specialized offerings and this guy brought the most grins and no desire to swap or change anything but the seat.

The Fisher offerings were promising, but had a bad Manitou fork where a straight rotor would rub when the fork was compressed, and used their cheap house brand of parts where Giant chose good first tier parts. Fisher also had China made frame with paint already chipping off on dealer floor.
Bike Setup:Stock except swap for WTB saddle and Conti Diesel tire swap if I'm spending more time on dirt trails.
Bottom Line:This bike needs a 10 and not 5 Chili rating scale. I have and have had a lot of bikes and none can do it all like this one. This started as selling a classic light racer I no longer used and not liking riding my dualie around town to play and practice spots. It ended up being the one bike to take on weekend and family trips, and ended up getting an almost old fart riding skinnies and jumps like he never expected.

Maybe it's because I pre-date BMX, but you just can't have fun as easily as you can on this guy. The K-Rads make for great street fun and make it a comfort bike on steroids for a family and friend or city ride and they stick on pavement. Knobby tires make it a better trail bike than I expected, but not for epic rides. The Schwinn Sting Ray I got in the 1960s was the last time going nowhere and doing nothing was so much fun.

This bike has honestly made me a better rider at the age of 46.

Thanks to Budget Bicycle Center, Madison, WI for not stocking just one bike, but two brands, several models and all of the sizes!

Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $950.00
Strengths:Goes where you want it to go. Fork. Rear skewer.
Weaknesses:Heavy-ish. Expensive. Frame prefers OE rear skewer.
Similar Products Used:Trek Bruiser 1, GF Tassajara. Demoed fishers but 15.5" was too big and 13" was too small. 14" STP perfect.
Bike Setup:Race face cranks 170mm. e13. sram 9 speed. wtb seat. Stout/skraxle front hub with wtb FR rim.
Bottom Line:This bike is good. Great bump stability. No beginner has ever wrecked on it. 69/74 angles with a 16.0 inch chain stay seems like the best bike ever - except for maybe front wheel wash out in the corners - which is operator error. Can carry the seat high (inseam minus 4.5") for effecient pedaling on trails with obstacles up to 14 inches tall. I bought this bike for the fork. 15 lbs air max in the left. 55 or so max in the right. It is coil on the left and air on the right. If I knew more about riding and what direction my riding would consistently take I would have just built up a frame with an air only or coil only fork. This fork is a good do everything fork. A bit heavy. Goes where you point it and takes the bike with it... kind of like a bowling ball on the front of the bike.. but easy to lift?

Who should buy this bike?
1. Anybody that wants their bike to go exactly where they want it to go. Far and away the safest mountain bike I have ever loaned or ridden. People wreck on the other bikes but not on this one. Bump stability is amazing.

Who should not buy this bike?
1. People who like slack seat angles for whatever reason.
2. People who run skinny tires and would be better off building up an STP3 frame.
3. People who should buy an STP 2 or just the frame with included headset.

Favorite Trail:Dirt Jumps
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $250.00
Purchased At:PinkBike
Strengths:I bought the frame and switched it out with my P.1 components. .. and OH MAN. The stp frame 15" is perfect for dirt jumping and urban riding. Skate parks and bmx tracks also much easier. Everything I can do on the P.1 is easier on the STP, its amazing. Very sturdy feeling. Very light for a bike that gets so much riding abuse.
Weaknesses:Disc brake only, but thats not a big deal.
Similar Products Used:The P series, Azonic Steelhead.
Bike Setup:DJ3, rhino lites with arrow launch tires, Mx2 brake, other neat stuff.
Bottom Line:Great bike for Urban/Park/DJ. I have cased some of the big line jumps at lake arbor and it held up fine, in fact the DJ3 bent before the frame gave in. 15" frame size is the only way to go, it spins in the air very easily. Great bike that makes a lot of things easier. . . i would recommend it.

Strengths:First off the bike is great value for money where else can you get a bike with hydros, 05 drop offs hussefelts and a nice burly frame for 900. My hydros work amazingly i touch Them and im grounded. The forks are also very plush and not too much but Not too little travel. The front 9 inch hayes rotor is very cool. Frame is beautifully setup so that you can ride trails if you want to but also dirtjump at the same time very nice.
Weaknesses:Tires, I changed them to minions as they could not grip but there would be no need to change them if you werent doing some trails on it. Handlebars are alright but I wanted more rise for manuals, hops etc.
Similar Products Used:Giant Yukon, Norco 250 dirt, and my racing Norco Team DH
Bike Setup:Hayes HFX9, Scott pro strike handle bars, pazzaz stem, dual maxxis minions, 05 drop offs, hussefelts.
Bottom Line:One of the greatest value bikes on the market. When you look at other bikes that have almost the same components (hydros, Good suspension) they cost about $1000. This is the only one in its price range to have those sort of components. Although some of the components were slightly cheaped i reckon its better cuz u get better main components ie Forks and brakes.

Bottom Line:I just wanted to add something about the bike (i already wrote one review). Depending on where you live some components will be different so check the website. Some come with avid mechs brakes and some come with hydros and i think the rims are different too. I have no clue why the guys are saying these tires suck, if you ride street these are the best tires you can get for the price and quality, they are super light and work well in the dirt and on the pavement. The stem is also pretty good i dont know why it would creak and the bars would shift, sounds like its not tightened properly. The only thing you might have trouble with like it was already mentioned is your hubs because they are some no name kind but so far i had no trouble

Strengths:The frame has great geometry for BMX, urban, trials, and park riding. It is light and very responsive. With it's short chainstays it manuals and trials really good.
Weaknesses:With the color satin putty I did put on a few stickers to get some style.
Similar Products Used:I rode a small stumpjumper as my stunt-slalom bike for years and I Have test rode just about every attempt at a freeride hardtail from all major bike companies.
Bike Setup:STP 1 frame, rock shox duke fork,(I know, kinda light) mavic 519 rims, race face cranks, and mrp chain guide.
Bottom Line:This bike rocks. I am an intermediate stunt rider that greatly improved when I got this bike. The first week was a checklist of tricks that I have been trying for a while. Bunnyhop manuals, manual gaps, trials hops, pedal kicks, tail taps at skateparks, and it jumps great.

Strengths:not a bad frame yet it lacks... focus
nice BB height
very urban head tube
i like hayes, and the power is there, but they are (like all hydros) a hassle; rubbing, reach adjust winds itself out (more annoying than you think!).they do the job, look cool :-S
unless you do trials, little cog is useless,(22T), take off front changer for less clutter and rub, use der. as chainguide.:-)(ghetto remedy)
bars will do the job but i dont know for how much longer...*upgrade*
the rynolite rims are the unspectacular oem ones, but im proud of them so far, plenty of drops to flat, major cases, dh runs on very low psi tires and only one major flat spot on the rear when i blew the side out of one of the k-rads.
cant complain about cranks, solid allround, good BB, and cranks so far unbent, though very scratched. i cant get over how tiny that small ring is...
no complaints about dehore rear derailleur.
Weaknesses:very urban head tube angle (i included this one in both because i prefer downhill to street etc. so it does not work for me but may for others)
disc brake gusset does nothing (impulse?)
badge fell off...
rock bottom hubs cannot deal with braking forcing from brakes especially front, broke an axle ($50)... seriously consider upgrading after buying.
seat is pathetic, bent already, comfy as dipping yourself in honey and sitting on an ants nest in a thong.*upgrade*
grips suck buy ODI's *uggrade*
stem is the worst part of the bike, besides tires, it creaks, groans, looks gay, the bars have moved over in the clamp... sheesh, at least give us a name brand one*upgrade*.
tires...kenda shame on you, never buy k-rads, holy rollers are 100 times better. i actually exploded them both in the first 2 weeks.
Pedals offer little grip *upgrade*
forks just aint that special, but at least you have the quality of a basic marzocchi and you own one of the big 4: manitou, marzocchi, rock shox and fox. whenever you get the chance, get DJ's, perfect freeride fork on a budget and f*&@ off strong. drop-off adjustment pretty average.
the whole bike is black! except for rotors!
Similar Products Used:none but have tried DMR trailstar, Surly instigator, trek 3700 (i think), oryx DD, and P.1 cromo and they all s@#* on this frame except trek... pffft
Bike Setup:stock except ODI's, minion DHR 2.5 60a on the front (actually not bad urban tire) for strength and dirt grip, and good old hookworm on rear (kind of a thing with my riding buddies. for DH i have michelin comp 24's in 2.5 (best dry tire ive ever tried, expensive but worth it!)
front derailluer absent.
Bottom Line:im the kinda guy that doesnt buy most stuff unless it breaks, except your contact points with the bike ie. grips, and rubber, the most ride changing aspect of your bike, i like to experiment with tyres alot and i have about a dozen. anyway im running my bike as cheap as i can, but if i had some money, some serious changes need to be made to this bike. the stock components will get the job done, but with no particular finesse or style.if this is your second bike (after you realise the bike you got into mtb'ing on you realise is crap) this will please you with its performance. oh and its got to be the best value bike on the planet it desreves way more chillies than possible.

Purchased At:cycle solutions
Strengths:This bike comes stock with pretty good components-avid mechanical brakes, easton handlebars, sun rhyno lite welded rims, hussefelt cranks etc. This is a very nice bike for street and dj. It has an awsome frame which is half trials half moutainbike so if you are a little into trials this bike will be perfect for u. The frame is also very lite at around 4 pounds and the whole bike in total is in low 30es. The avid disk brakes are like no other mechanical brakes. They work in any weather and they are just as good as some lower quality hydros (and if you are wondering how they compare to hayes mx 2 that come on most bikes at this price its like comparing a supercycle to specialized demo 9). The wheels are also pretty strong, i had some trouble with them at the beginnig but once i retightened all the spokes i had no trouble since (just run high psi in your tires because these flat spot pretty easy). The fork is pretty good too, i find it similar to dj3s but a bit lighter. It works well and its very strong too and it looks cool so i like it. The rest of the bike is pretty solid as well so if you buy this bike you wont upgrade much.
Weaknesses:Couple of days ago i noticed my cranks moving a bit up and down because of the bottom braket so the bb will need to be replaced soon. I guess its my fault tho because i was biking in the wet snow with salt and everything :(. As for the rest of the bike so far so good
Similar Products Used:the closest competition is the cannondale chase, specialized p.2, and the new gary fisher free ride bikes
Bike Setup:Single speed with a rennen tensioner and a new eastern bikes bmx seat
Bottom Line:This is the best dj/street bike for the money. It has quality parts that wont break for a while and its also pretty lite comparing to the competition. I dont know what else to say its just a great bike for the money so if your looking for a good urban/dj bike, this is it.
