Date Reviewed: July 16, 2008
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $600.00
Strengths:Complete package for any serious 8-12 year old MTBer. Finally a quality aluminum frame for a kid to ride! It's nice that adult parts can be swapped onto the Brodie.
Weaknesses:Shifters & brakes?
Similar Products Used:Specialized Hotrock 20" - heavy, and it died a miserable death.
Bike Setup:2007 Brodie Menace, Schwalbe Racing Ralph 24" tires (MUCH faster than the OEM DH brand), Formula K18 brakes, Syntace carbon bar, X9 derailleur and right twist shifter (converted to 1x9), 11-34 9 speed SRAM cassette, ODI Ruffian twist grips (perfect for small hands), Maxm carbon seatpost.
Bottom Line:As a stock bike, this is an excellent value for 8-12 year kids. My kid has *pounded* this thing and shockingly it keeps on running.

Sure, the shifters and brakes have eventually worn out and failed (and replaced with hand-me-downs from my rig) but all cheap things wear out quickly and fail. I'd much rather invest into a solid frame/fork/wheelset and skimp on the components so that I can upgrade later if I see the bike being used.

Besides the frame and fork, I'm particularily impressed with the ISIS BB and crankset which due to the smaller wheels sees a ridiculous amount of pedal strikes yet it still spins more freely than my supposedly superior outboard bearing BB, and the wheelset which has remained true and smooth running.

Note that the Brodie Menace is targeted to a youth demographic, so if a 140+ lbs adult chooses to huck, jump, or DH the thing, it will obviously not work as intended eh?
