Strengths: Very durable frame to hang replacment parts on. Rides really well. MUCH better than any department store bike.Weaknesses: Slightly heavy, but it is a steal frame (perfectly normal and not a real issue).Bottom Line: My friend was throwing his Trek 820 out after "beating on it to death" (it was totally unridable). When I saw it, I figured that I could use the frame to throw together a "winter bike", so he gave it to me. I had to replace nearly everything on it. BUT, I got it free and it is my size. I got it up and running enough to ride it at several mountain bike events and I was not disappointed. In case you are wondering, I DID NOT put any high end XTR,XT, or Deore parts on it. I only used basic bottom end replacment parts.
This is a good mountain bike even if it is basic. If you need to replace parts on it (like I did) nasty surprises are next to non-existent. Can that same thing be said for a department store bike? I dought it. This Trek 820 was well worth the effort. If you have one of these, don't be afraid to keep it going. If you see one used, don't scoff at it and walk away even if it needs work done on it. The Trek 820 is good.

Strengths: Nice fram. It has lasted me 3 years of beating it like a down hill. After its been used for that long if it has made it it runs smooth.Weaknesses: The fork on my went before a year of riding it. It froze up and even before then the fork was sort pointless. Very easy to warp rims and every last gear in the drive train.Bottom Line: Don't take it off road it will die and be in the shop more then you ride it. You also need to be heavy in order to get the fork to react. Not sugguested for kids or jumping.
Favorite Trail: Any place you can haul.

Strengths: Good frame, all-around bike with high speed ratios as well as short ones. Goes everywhere. Confortable saddle even for long trips.Weaknesses: Heavy frame, but it'll hold in one piece. The fork is awful, get another one, even at 30$ it'll be a better one. The rims are a bit weak. The brakes are still good enough to lift the rear or hop on the back wheel, but they tend to get buttery with time. Front derailleur doesn't like changing gear.Bottom Line: A great all-around bike with high capacities. Has no problem taking you from point A to B, even if you take a muddy, rock-filled shortcut. Just don't be too hard on its wheels. Anyway, if you want to abuse a trek you might find the 4500+ interesting. 5 flamin' chillis for the high bang, low buck ratio and 4 flamin' chillis for the very interesting performance.

Strengths: Great Frame, componets aren't badWeaknesses: Fork is probally worse then riding a hard fork. Crank set is not the best, heavyBottom Line: This is overall a great bike. I use it for salom riding. It is a perfect race bike if u get a new fork and bigger tires. I've used it for 2 years and put over $200 bucks into new parts, dont get it if your on a tight budget. I'd recomend it for a cross country rider if your going stock.

Strengths: Awsome Frame, good for any newbie biker that wants some fun good price. An over all good picker upper!Weaknesses: Bad fork, Not so good for drops.Bottom Line: Good bike for the price...fun if you like replacing all the parts.

Strengths: Pretty good for the money and beginnersBottom Line: This is not going to be my LAST bike, but for now both of us are pretty happy. For the full last month we have been biking together several times a week, and my wife always looked forward to the ride.
Service at the the Sun Bike Shop is first rate. The offer a near perfect assembling, and an one time free tune-up, a $50 value.
Thanks for good reviews that really inpired us into buying this good product.

Strengths: good steel/chromoly frame, comfortable geometry and ride, looks great, nice seat, decent brakes, shiftersWeaknesses: heavy, low-end components, shock is not adjustable. low quality front derailleur/pedals/crankset - I think Trek skimped a little too much in this area. stock grips transmit too much shock...replaced with Oury's for more comfort.Bottom Line: For this price, you can't go wrong. True, it doesn't compare to f/s or more expensive hardtails on the trails but for the kind of recreational riding I do, it suits me fine. A nice step up from an old department store bike. Others will want to upgrade most of the components, but I am satisfied. If you have more money, I would also recommend looking at the Trek 4500 or the Specialized Hardrock.

Strengths: Comfortable and very easily adjustable saddle (just open and turn the lever), instant-shifting Rapidfire shifters, strong Cro-moly frame, good front-suspension (what my friends consider too bumpy is not what I consider too bumpy).Bottom Line: This bike is great for anyone who seeks to find value and performance in one neat package. I would recommend this bike to you if this will be your first "serious" bike (not a department store or child's bike), or if you are a casual off-roader. If you only ride bikes on weekends or don't spend 5 hours on it a day, this is for you. If you take biking very seriously, you probably want to step up to the Trek 4500 or higher.
I do not recommend this bike to those that only ride on pavement or rarely venture off-road because this would be overkill. If this is your situation, try the Trek 800 Sport or a road bike of some sort (but remember that road bikes can NEVER, EVER go off-road, even gravel).
Favorite Trail: All of them (especially the dirt ones)

Strengths: Good first bike for those unsure of the MtBike plunge. Dozens of steps up from the department store bikes that come close to the price of the 820. Good ride overall and I've heard of many folks picking this bike up as a first bike and upgrading components after they understand what the needs of their riding style demand.Weaknesses: Bottom bracket came loose twice, causing the pedals to wobble. This took three trips to the shop or tightening and eventual replacement with a new and upgraded BB. Aside from that I've had no problems with the bike and it's components with a fairly good amount of riding and trail use. Trek was good about the warranty replacement and I have more confidence in the company/bike now than I did when I bought it.Bottom Line: Again, a good bike with decent features for the beginner. There are better things out there for the seasoned rider
and semipro but for a beginner who wants a quality ride with a strong name behind it for under $300 US this bike wins. If you're new to riding and looking for a good start don't pass up a test ride at your local store.
