Strengths: still running, five years later, nice frame, drive train still stock and going strong.
Weaknesses: heavy tires, magnum fork had to go, no disk mount
Bottom Line:
the drive train has lasted five yrs, though not ridden hard. i bought this bike and a rack at same time. 15 minutes after buying, driving down highway, bike falls off at 65. sheared a 1/4" off the bar and seat. rode perfectly. tough bike. buy it if you get a good deal.
Similar Products Used: nashbar aluminum, gary fisher('94), supergo access
Bike Setup: only thing stock is frame and drivetrain. duke fork, hellbent bar, easton stem, cheapo susp. post, jamis seat(though i did like the seat it came with, just left it on the trunk of a car), panaracer fire xc's

Strengths: Great frame, everything else good for beginner or even advanced rider, too heavy for racing with stock components.
Weaknesses: None, older style rock shox jett was the first thing to go.
Bottom Line:
I rode this bike for a year on tarails, love the classic geometry, started racing this season with many upgrades, the thing weighs around 22 lbs now, bad-ass. I love it, and will not give it up til I break it.
Bike Setup: Stock Shifters, front derailer, and BB, Avid ti brakes, ringle rpm wheelset, PAnaracer Fire Pro tires, race face crank, xtr rear derailer and cartridge, race face xc bars, easton alum stem, manatou black super fork, and probably more...

Weaknesses: Some of the components have broken on me but not many considering i have used it for 3 years on some intermediate trails.
Bottom Line:
This has been one of the most worth while purchases i have ever made, i have had lots of fun riding this great model and i am mad at trek for canceling it. I hope my opinion will persuade some of you into making great purchase.

Strengths: This bike has great up grade potentiality. I have put new Michelin Comp S tires on it, up graded it to XT fron and rear put a new Profile Design stem on it, shimano clipless pedals on it, new bontrager rims, selle italia saddle, cat eye computer, and still more! its now valued at over 1000 dollars...bottom line? this bike's great.
Weaknesses: The fork is alittle loose, and doesnt have too must adjustablity. The shifting was alittle tempermental, but that was fixed with a quick upgrade.
Bottom Line:
BUY YOUR OWN.....YOU CANT HAVE MINE. But if you do, know what your getting into, and have fun with it. it has great potential for being upgraded, and it still rides great right out of the shop. I rode a race on this bike and took 2nd place. 1st race i ever road. I am a long time lover of the trek company, and this is a great piece of machinery.
Similar Products Used: this is the only product that i can say that i have used since ive gotten into biking, though i have rode a schwinn moab 2 and a trek stx 1000. i really like the 6000 though over them both...maybe it's just because im bias.
Bike Setup: like i said above, upgraded.

Strengths: good value, lx rear deraileur, no problems with the fork, light
Weaknesses: seat could be better, front deraileur isn't great, cheap seatpost
Bottom Line:
A very good bike for the price and a good overall beginners bike. The front derailleur isn't very effective and doesn't upshift well, but for under $600 you can't go wrong.
Bike Setup: stock except for Specialized Body Geometry seat and XT rear deraileur (broke LX but worked fine)

Strengths: Insanely Strong and Versatile Frame, Excellent geometry, perfect for anything from trials to cross country to dirt jumping.
Weaknesses: My friend bought a garage slae bike for $30 with a better front derraileur, rims are strong and can take me at 180 pounds doing 6 foot drops but need to be trued almost daily.
Bottom Line:
THE ULTIMATE BIKE!!! For anything from DH drops to lightweight cross country, this bike does it in style (a few simple modifications can easily make this possible)

Strengths: The frame is sturdy as all hell, takes a beating and keeps me on the trail. Performs well in the clay-like mud, better than I do =)
Weaknesses: Only concern, really, is the front derailluer. F'get about using the third chainring on a hairy trail. Also, too low of an angle for much jumping.
Bottom Line:
Bought this bike (slightly used) about a year ago, primarily for street riding. It takes cement jumps beautifully, and city stairs make it salivate. Decided to start trail riding this winter, and have ridden off road three times a week since. I love the bike, it seems to take on anything I can throw at it (even when I can't). It's been thrown across bayous, come full-force into trees, been used as a ladder on muddy bayou banks (just this morning, even =), and has done downhill head-over hills rolls with me, not a single bend in it. Rides go from nasty slop in the pouring down rain (those Jones' don't like slick stuff, but the mud rotation is great in the muck) to 100+ degrees in dusty conditions. My only complaints are the angle, my 130# self has trouble getting it off the ground in time; the front derailluer -- had to stop using the third chainring to avoid adjusting it every 30 minutes; and the fact that I bought a 21" when I really should be using 18" for the type of riding I enjoy. This is a great bike, the only reason I will ever replace the frame is becuase it's too big for me. Beat this bike to death, it loves it. I'll probably break my neck before I break this frame. I'd reccomend this bike to anyone who only has $500 to spend, and wants the best bang for their buck.

Strengths: Frame And Fork. I seriosly thought i was gonna break both when i bought this bike but even after 2 yrs they are still in one piece. The best part off this bike is the geometry it can ride anything
Weaknesses: Shifting componants are crap and the stock cranks flexed like heck. The Manitou Magnum Has not yet broken but i've never seen a fork flex like it. The Wheel set was not as strong as i would of liked but they were not too bad. This bike trashes rear rims like Heck (accualy i think that is me)
Bottom Line:
Great Buy For the money shouldnt have been Prepared for the abuse that i gave it but took it very well. BIke took a couple 10ft drops but if your interested in that stuff like i am now got get your self a NORCO as i soon will.
Bike Setup: All LX, Platform pedals and raceface DH bars.

Strengths: Good light frame. I have been riding it hard for two seasons now and it's still hanging in there.
Weaknesses: seat bent right away, front forks have loosened, replaced chain, replaced rear de-railer, pedals broke.
Bottom Line:
I would recommend this bike to anybody that wants to get into mountian biking. It is a good starter bike and I would probably buy it again if I had the chance.
Bike Setup: downhill bars, funn pedals, all LX brakes and derailers. New seat.

Strengths: Have given it some pretty hard rides and bumps. still in one piece
Weaknesses: first day riding it peddle striped out of crank.
Bottom Line:
really like my trek, first bike was a trek maybe one day I will try anouther bike but for now it is a trek bick. I would tell some one wanting to upgrade to buy this bike. It rides smooth and after upgrading to clip less peadles you will pay around $650. Not bad at all for what trek calls their bottom of the line comp bike.

Strengths: Good Frame and overall allright components. It's ok for racing and is pretty light.
Weaknesses: I had the thing for about a year and snapped the chain about 10 times. What's up with that. Manitou fork is good in the beginning but onnce it breaks in, you will bottom it out just sitting on the thing. You can always get a new fork. The rims arn't so good when it comes to wheight but you can replace them too.
Bottom Line:
{Great Bike if you wave the money to upgrade. {Good bike if you don't.
Bike Setup: Mostly stock exept for shimano SPD clipless peddles

Bottom Line:
I really like the Trek 6000 because it holds up to the beatings and crashes. I am 15 years old and love to race, ride trails, and freestyle so I needed something that could fit my budget, and my needs. I was thinking about trading in in the summer of 2002 but I decided that I'm not going to. I will build it up because I love the frame so much.
