Favorite Trail:china camp, tam DH
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $630.00
Purchased At:some lbs in SF
Strengths:all around components work well together for price range (in the beginning at least). derailiurs and cassette has worked well for 4 years now. climbs well.
Weaknesses:worst stuff would be the cranks & seat. the stock aheadset started to go awry after 2 years. the fork does it's job.. plan on replacing it. rear QR dropout could be better as the aluminum around the derailur has become crushed and the hub moves now.. could be partly my fault though.
Similar Products Used:old bike was a hardrock. I tried the moab when shopping for new bike but went with the rockhopper.
Bike Setup:frame and derailiur and cranks are only stock parts letf... wheelset replaced with 317 & a hayes mag in the front, 717 in back with better xtr v-brakes. chris king all around. thompson 70mm 90 deg stem, seatpost. easton carbon bars. better wtb seat (a must), better wtb grips. velociraptor tires. marzocchi '04 mx coil w/air preload.
Bottom Line:Really awesome value, great XC bike that you can bump up to a race bike later. you can also upgrade everything if you want .. i did, although I could have probably just saved for a fsr. my cranks did creak as well as others have mentioned, and the seat is real stiff, although I got used to it. The rear wheel went out of true so fast, broke a spoke too. Ritchey rim was so hard to get tires over, now with the mavics is much easier. Definately want to replace that, and maybe get a shorter stem since specialized always seems to make the stems extra long (mine was like 130mm). great bike over all, good for someone trying to get a nice bike to XC with or upgrade to the next level. In a while I will probably get a Ti XC frame and just swap all the components on, or maybe a ellsworth freeride frame.

Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $700.00
Purchased At:Sporting Life
Strengths:Frame,paint,fork,tires, brakes, components in general
Weaknesses:saddle, wheels, hubs, crankset, bottom bracket, cassette and chain, pedals
Similar Products Used:Trek 7000, Schwinn Moab 1, Thin Blue Line Comet
Bike Setup:large (19 inch) with XT front derailleur,Mavic 517/LX rear wheel,XT disc front hub, Avid Mechanical Disc front, XT splined crankset/bottom bracket, BG saddle, XT cassette/chain, 858 pedals
Bottom Line:I was looking for a bike that i could get into serious riding with, and be able to race if i wanted to. I was on a tight budget. A buddy of mine had a 2000 Stumpjumper Comp that i likd, so i bought as much bike that I could afford.
I bought this at the Toronto Bike Show in the spring of 2001. All in all, a great bike. I swapped the saddle at the time of purchase for a BG sport.
My first summer seemed to have discovered all the weaknesses of the bike. I broke spokes constantly, the bottom bracket creaked like mad. It was in the shop a fair amount for these complaints. Pedals were horrible for mud clearance, and smahing one on a rock was a blessing.
Spring 2002, i discovered that i needed a completely new drivetrain after i lunched the front derailleur. I went XT for everything, and it really transformed the bike. No more evil chain suck like the stock rings, smooth shifts all of the time. I had the rear wheel changed due to a flat spot and breaking 3 spokes in the first 3 kilometres of an enduro race. I also had the front rim re-laced with stronger spokes and an XT disc hub. Added the Avid Disc which added tremendous wet weather braking. The bike has been bomb-proof ever since.
I came to realize that i broke all of the parts that Specialized had put on the bike to cut costs, which I can understand.
As my first "real" bike, i can't complain for a second about this bike. I only wish i had made the upgrades earlier, as 2002 was an expensive year for bike parts. This bike has served me well, a number of beginner races, 8 hour relays, and tons of trail riding. 5 flaming chilis, for helping me "discover" a new hobby. I haven't played golf nearly as often since i bought my bike! By the way, she is now up for sale as I am going full suspension. A great purchase at the time and a great bike ever since. I would recommend it the avid rider or the beginner racer. It has the flexibility to do just about everything cross country oriented.

Strengths:Frame, good entry level components, looks, handling and response. Climbs like a dozer
Weaknesses:Crank and any powertrain related components if you are a big strong rider. I am 6'4" and weigh 230 lbs.
Similar Products Used:Raleigh, schwinn
Bike Setup:XT dérailleurs, XT shifters, LX crank, Avid single digit vbrakes and levers, body geometry saddle, 618 mavic rims with XT hubs, Marzocchi bomber fork
Bottom Line:Great bike to build on. I would have liked to have better components to start with because my first summer was expensive as systematically replaced them all (upgrades). My second summer was made up of tougher riding but less visits to my bike shop.

Favorite Trail:Canfield, Riverside
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $600.00
Purchased At:Two Wheeler Ski Dealer
Strengths:Frame strength, weight, price, tires and rims are beefy, and the avid brakes are a nice touch. The XT/ LX components have held up well.
Weaknesses:Crank sucks, chainrings, chain, and the seat is terrible
Similar Products Used:Giants, GT, Raleigh, Gary Fischer, Kona
Bike Setup:Stock-- changed out chain, seat, and chainrings.
Bottom Line:This bike is light and climbs like a goat. I am 6-4 and 240. I went for the 21" frame and it fits perfect. Whatever I dish out, this bike responds well. The only downside to the bike is the cranks (ugly and heavy as hell), the chain (snapped it after 2 months), and the chainrings (bend easily, replaced w/ Shimano). Plan on replacing the seat as well. I got a very good deal and rode every hardtail bike in the $700-1500 price range. This one fit the best and had similar components to that of bikes priced in the $1500 price range. The fork responds average and the riser bar on the bike is a nice fit. The rims and wheels have also been flawless. The bike accelerates well and can handle some of the more advanced downhill rides. I recommend this bike to the average XC rider.

Strengths:Great overall bike, wonderful weight, comfortable grips, good paint and sticker job.
Weaknesses:Definitely the sprocket, I broke so many teeth its crazy, every time i stress the gear, the chain slips, then falls to a different gear. The most uncomfortable seat yet, my butt is sore as i write this now.
Similar Products Used:A1 FS
Bike Setup:Stock, except BMX pedals, Shimano XT deraileurs
Bottom Line:Great bike overall, just make sure if you like to jump steps, go uphill, and stress the bike out, change the sprockets, all of them, then change the seat and you are left with a GREAT bike.

Date Reviewed: May 16, 2002
Favorite Trail:Braille Trail, Aptos, CA
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Strengths:frame, xt rear derailler, rapid fire shifters, tires,
Maintou front shock
Weaknesses:LX front derailler, crankset, ritchey rims, seat.
Similar Products Used:1990 Specialized Stumpjumper
Bike Setup:stock initially, gradually upgraded to shimano parts
Bottom Line:The good:
The frame is excellent, has a nice "feeling" to it compared
to my old stumpjumper (climbs well). The Shimano rapid fire shifters and rear derailler has performed FLAWLESSLY for two years and still going strong. Stock tires lasted quite a while ( greater than 1200 miles on them ). Handlebar is good . Brake lever action is very good. Pedals were great.

The bad:
The rims are horrible. I am 220 lbs and had to have the rear re-built with heavier gauge spokes. Not only that, as others have stated, the rims are too large!!! Broke many tire levers on these things and had to switch to metal which scratches the rims and punctures tubes (major hassle). I recently replaced them with Sun Rhyno lights. The crankset eventually bent and was replaced with Shimano splined (which required new bottom bracket). The seat is indeed horrible. The LX front derailler had a meltdown on one particular "chainsuck" episode and was replaced with an XT. The seatpost quickly bent and was replaced with a Thompson (excellent product).

The mediocre:
The brakes, but, once I replaced the rims, the rear braking seems to be much improved. The shock had some initial problems ( a mis-threaded part which was gladly replaced by Manitou and easily fixed by yours truly ), otherwise has performed well.

The bottom line, if you are a heavy rider and like to do jumps and rough trail riding, spend more money now on a bike with tougher components (otherwise be prepared to replace a lot of things for a lot of money). If on a budget, "normal" cross-country rider, and on the lighter side, buy this bike.

Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $550.00
Purchased At:Hargroves Cycles, Southampton
Strengths:Very comfortable to ride. Most other bikes don't feel right for my build (6' 5" tall, with relatively long back). I love the light weight and overall efficiency when climbing. Gear change is far better than I thought possible - even when caked in mud.
Bike is far more capable than I am
Weaknesses:Replaced the saddle with Spesialized BG Sport, and would prefer a slightly higher riser bar, or steeper stem.
Similar Products Used:Clapped out old Raleigh Pioneer, various hire bikes (Scott, Ridgeback, ...)
Bike Setup:As original except the saddle
Bottom Line:Got it early in 2001 at bargain price, otherwise would have had to go down market to meet the budget - very glad I did!

Also bought Specialized bikes for wife and son - they must be doing something right!

Purchased At:family bike, e longmeadow, ma
Strengths:takes a beating. great components for the $$ rolls over anything.
Weaknesses:sits taller than I originally though it would. this is my 1st mtb. as I tackle more technical terrain, I feel like I'm up too high on downhills.
Similar Products Used:1st mtb
Bike Setup:pretty much still stock. did add bontrager bar ends
Bottom Line:great newbie bike, but buy it a size or 2 smaller! I'd love to just get an 18" or 19" (6'2", and I've got the 21"), but speacialized doesn't sell hardtail frames. at this stage I'm at a cross roads. I think the size of the frame holds me back on technical downhills. I may end up with a new frame, then rebuild this bike as a cross trainer. if I had been riding a while already when I tried the bike, I may have recognized this.

Strengths:The XT and LX components were a plus. Nice geometry, smooth riding, good climbing.
Weaknesses:Crankset, Saddle, and Wheelset left something to be desired, a little stiff on the downhills
Similar Products Used:Trek, Gary Fisher
Bike Setup:Bontrager Race Wheels, LX Hollowtech Crankset, Body Geometry Saddle, XT cassette, everything else stock
Bottom Line:This was my first real bike. After the first few months I upgraded some components and noticed a nice change. The new wheelset has worked great, and stays true compared to the ritchey wheels. I have started to use this bike for some urban riding and trials and it has held up pretty well. Riding a nice bike for under 1000 was what I needed and that is what i got, so the value is great. Is it the best bike out there? No, but it will take you out to the trail and back with a smile on your face every ride.

Favorite Trail:Crater Lake Rim Road
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $770.00
Purchased At:River City Bicycles
Strengths:Good components, great handling on & off road, excellent commuter bike, decent weight, bombproof wheels
Weaknesses:seat (big deal), overly long handlebars; could use bigger chainrings for road use; Ritchey rims are tough but TOO BIG!
Similar Products Used:Schwinn Moab, Gary Fisher (didn't fit right at all), '93 Fuji Sundance rigid (previous bike)
Bike Setup:Specialized BG saddle, Time ATAC pedals, Cateye Enduro 2, bar-ends. Nimbus Armadillo 1.5" tires for commuting, with lights, bell and mirror added. Moved shifters, brake levers and grips in 1/2" from original position - handlebars are too wide for long-distance riding.
Bottom Line:This bike fit me better and rode better than anything else I tried in the $700-800 range. A sale at the LBS brought this bike within my price range. I've put 3000 miles on it the first year and it's held up incredibly well. Could use higher gearing (spins out at 32-35 mph) but otherwise good for road riding. Just eats up rough terrain, and the 44-32 low gear lets you spin at speeds as low as 3 mph (!)

Buy it if: you want the best components and toughest wheels available in the price range. The XT rear tranny shifts fast and smoothly - I can just rocket across an intersection, RapidFiring through the gears one after the other with no pauses. The LX front is OK - doesn't shift as quickly, and ate itself at 2600 miles - but not as important as the rear. The wheels are tough as nails - I am heavy (175 lb) for my size and often ride desert trails with a rear rack loaded down with extra water. I've had other wheels go out of true in just ten miles under this abuse, but I've beat the crap out of these for a year and they haven't even needed to be trued yet.

Do NOT buy it if: fixing flats/changing tires is hard for you. You will cry trying to get the bead over these because they are so big. I commute through a industrial area where flats are unavoidable even with Kevlar. I've broken every model of tire lever available and hurt myself trying to get the tires on and off these rims (and no, it's not the tire - I've tried 6 different kinds of tires, and I can get the same ones on and off my wife's bike without any tools at all).

Plan on: investing another $50-100 in a decent seat. Specialized might as well leave this one off - it would be more comfortable riding on the end of the seatpost.

Strengths:great bike! very maneuverable and quiet, when everything's in tune... no annoying clicks or anything. this bike eats up hills like flat ground. usually shifts well. remarkably tough. very light bike as well. handles downhill very well, considering that i ride mostly cross-country.
Weaknesses:seat is a rock. drivetrain is not too great. many worn teeth on chainrings. the rear brakes are very tought to pull. replaced cable, helped somewhat.
Similar Products Used:cannondale m400
Bike Setup:all stock except kool max brake pads on rear and a new rear brake cable.
Bottom Line:the whole setup is a winner. as a mostly cross-country rider, i find the bike handles rolling terrain very well. i just returned from some xtreme downhill action at killington vermont and this bike just tore up all other hardtails. just those rear brakes are really tough to pull. possibly bad design. otherwise, bottom line is that this bike is the best bang for the buck. hands down.

Strengths:Climbs like a mountain goat no matter what the terrain.
Explodes with speed out of any gear.
Excellent components set for the price of the bike.
Weaknesses:The XT Deurailler is tempermental at times and ghost shifts every now and then especially on an uphill downshift. (Probably will be fixed with an adjustment at the bike shop.)
The only other thing is that the frame feels really tall on even mild downhills. I'm 6'4" with a 21" frame. (Haven't had an endo yet though!)

Bottom Line:I tested many bikes: Fischer, Trek, GT, Schwinn, Cannondale, etc...
The geometry of the Specialized frames are perfect for me and every pedal stroke generates tons of acceleration and speed.
The Rockhopper Pro Climbs like crazy, feels extremly stable on jumps and just feels fast. Also, the component set is well above average for the price range.
There is nothing comparable in price and performance.

Strengths:Great bike! Love the geometry: handles my fat butt and fits my short limbs very nicely. Sweet climber and pretyy agile. Can't say I love the seat, but don't hate it, either. Still building my riding skills, so I can't say I'm pushing the bike's envelope, but I can say that it is taking everything a big, beginning rider can dish out.
Weaknesses:XT rear derailleur is temperamental. Probably just not totally dialed in, but after one trip to the shop, it didn't take long for the problem to resurface. Chainstay is mangled thanks to lock-up (chainsuck?) when rear derail. misfires.
Similar Products Used:None. My first step up from a rigid Diamondback Sorrento.
Bike Setup:Stock except generic stubby bar ends. Will upgrade when things break. Crankset, front disc, pedals, and seat are likely first candidates for upgrade, but not immediately necessary.
Bottom Line:Wasn't looking to buy this much bike as I was getting only slightly more serious in mountain biking. I'm superglad I found the deal on the bike. It's looking to be a great platform to build on and I'd be surprised if my riding ever surpassed the bike's capabilities. Bottom line: one sweet ride and a very good value! Strengths:There is a lot of bike here with a great price. The components are higher end and well suited to the bike. The frame is awesome with great gemometry. This thing screams uphills and take most of what want to give it. I've done some extreme mountain trails and this bike can be trusted to deleiver. The Clara Magura Disk brakes screem too ... (another story and review) but they stop. Even up to the hubs in water (compliments of a busy beaver on a great trail), they worked and coming out they kept on working awesome. I like the Richie rims, they look cool too (nice read ones on international version). The tires are a bit heavy but you have to work at it to get a flat and they grip great (slip a little on flat rocks). This bike looks great too! Burnt Red and Black.
Weaknesses:The seat sucks big time. Junk it as fast as you can aford it. The Clara Disk brakes are not self adjusting (but easy to work on). The pedals are a death trap, sometimes you can get in them, other times can't get out of them. They seem cheap and you can't seem to trust them. The chain and crank-set could be better as I seem to be wearing hard on them and broke the chain in the first week.
Similar Products Used:Trek 6000

Bottom Line:This bike is worth all it gives you and all you can give it. It performs awesome on the back roads as well as extreme. I've touched down hard a few times (mostly due to cheap clipless pedals) and have crashed a few times hard (just me having bad luck). It just seems to hold up well. I'm Flamin real high on this one, just 'cause its a real kick ass bike and it does what I want to do.

Bottom Line:I started out with a shorter no rise stem because the geometry was more like my old ride and thus more comfortable. Remember the 80's (seat 8" higher than the bars, in full attack position - what was I thinking) I think I will try a higher rise on the stem. Weaknesses:Cheap cranks, cheap BB - developed click after 8 months, trashed in 11 months. I'm changing to XT. Bottom Line:I did alot of research on a few bikes, and spent hours in local bike stores trying to find the best deal. Meaning, a great bike set up, great frame, components, etc. The last two bikes I purchased cost 700 and above, and as soon as I purchased them had to upgrade the sheit out of them, which put me way over the 1000 dollar mark per bike. (Probably because I bought Cannondales, which are a rip off) I wanted to get a great hard tail for under 1000 dollars with a good set up. I sat on the Rockhopper Pro for 5 minutes and made up my mind, the bike felt comfortable, and felt fast. There are a sheitload of hills on the North Shore and I needed a great climber, this bike is it, a fast sprinter, fast climber, very siff frame, and the best deal for the money. Strengths:Light, nimble, quick and responsive. I have had the bike for a couple of weeks now and I have to say it is the best hardtail bike I have ridden. I rode several other Hardtails w/front suspension and this one had the plush-est ride of them all. Smooth, fast and quick handling. I got the bike to get back in shape and have ridden it everyday (on roads mostly since it's winter here. Just looking at it makes me want to ride!
Weaknesses:Being a heavier rider (220lbs) I would have preferred a stiffer elastomer for the shocks (but I have yet to bottom them out) and maybe a better front derailer, however I am EXTREMELY pleased with the performance/component set/weight and price. Specialized is getting back to their roots by building high quality bikes with killer components sets
Similar Products Used:I test rode Schwinn, DB, Mongoose, and a few others
Bike Setup:Completely stock with the exception of the Specialized Cyclometer
Bottom Line:I love the paint job (RED/Black). Its true about the braze-ons being too low on the down tube and the bottle rubbing the paint off the frame. So, I took a small piece of an old inner tube and glued it to the area that is subject to friction and I'm hoping will save the paint (with the bottle in place, you would never know the rubber patch is there). I really haven't put the bike through its paces but the riding I have done is a pleasure!! This is one solid ride.

Strengths:The geometry of this bike makes it an impressive climber, the best I've been on. The components work well from the shock to the rear hub. Gently pull on the brakes and you become quickly confident that these babies are gonna hold under even the most trying conditions. The LX shifts quickly and quietly, and the range in the gear set seems to work well for the trails I ride.
Weaknesses:Initially, I felt the steering response was a tad quirky. At times, it felt that the front wheel was going to fold under the head set. After three days of riding the trails, I got more comfortable with it and now don't notice a problem. The saddle was granite hard and uncomfortable so it go replaced before the bike left the sales floor. I also traded out the clipless pedels for traps. The braze-ons located at the bottom of the seat tube are too low to allow a bottle cage to fit without the botle riding on the downtube (my frame is 17"). The front Deore is the weak link in the bikes components and even with that said, it works fairly well. Some of the previous reviews seemed disappointed with the front suspension, but I have no complaints. I noticed for 2001, Specialized has switched to a Judy fork.
Similar Products Used:I rode the Raleigh M80, the Gary Fisher, a Schwinn, the Trek 6500 and 7000, and a Giant. The Specialized is the best bike of the lot for the money.

Strengths:This bike is just fun. It flies up hills and screams down. It's extremely fast in corners. The brakes are the best I've ever used (that includes discs). The suspension is super plush. The drivetrain is works well. The frame is great. It makes me forget that I'm riding an aluminum frame. The wheelset is strong and I rarely have to true it. This is just a solid bike that is great for so many different types of riding.
Weaknesses:The nine-speed stuff is okay, but it's a little bit weak for anything other than XC. The pedals are good as long as the trails is dry. They also have a tendency to unclip when I don't want them to. Lastly, the tires are good all around, but for as knobby as they are they are lacking a little bit in the traction department.
Similar Products Used:You name it.

Bottom Line:Eventhough I only paid $485 for it, I would have willingly paid full price for it. I am very impressed with the bike overall and I only plan to make a few upgrades. Weaknesses:Stock seat isn't made for riding, just for show-room looks; would've appreciated the Manitou SX-R for the fork 'cause it'd shave about a half pound in weight due to the aluminum shaft versus the steel shaft in the SX, not to mention the adjustable rebound that the SX-R has would be a nice bonus; brakes squeal like a banshee when wet; paint chips rather easily; I paid $814 for this back in March and I see someone got it for $699! >:-(

Bottom Line:Great bike for the cash. The drivetrain has skipped a couple of times on me and I don't ever ask much of it (I always ghost-shift on the uphills, etc.) Kinda disappointing for an XT/LX combo. Perhaps the chain is the weak link in the drivetrain or else nine rear cogs just can't be expected to work well... (The bike is set up as good as it can be.) It's a very fast bike though; it feels much lighter while riding than you'd expect if you lift it.

Strengths:LX/XT combo is really nice, smmoth shifting. Fork is nice,The Manitou SX is really quite a step up from a Rock Shox Jett.
Weaknesses:TOO MANY LOGOS!!!!!! This ting is gonna get a paint job just as soon as I can afford it!!! The seat was a bit harsh, untill I adjusted to it!
Similar Products Used:Gary Fisher Marlin, and too many test rides too mention
Bike Setup:Shimano LX/XT drivetrain with specialized cranks. Avid 1.0 brakes Lx shifters. I replaced the stock pedals with odyssey shark bite pedals.
Bottom Line:While I got this bike for a mere $699.00, I would have no problem shelling out the suggested retail of $929.00. I am a big rider (330 Lbs) and this bike can take the abuse of me flying down stairs and taking big jumps. This bike in the words of my local shop owner "as good as a bike needs to be unless you have self esteem issues" I just hate all of those damn crooked s's all over the place!!!!

Bottom Line:This bike smokes. Climbs and desecends incredibly. Highly recommended for beginners, intermediates, and beyond. Great paint job. Better than bikes costing alot more. Save your cash on snob bikes this ones worth more. Only upgrade really needed is the seat. Paid 799.00 a real bargain with LX/XT . Great shock for anyone under 200lbs. Light for the price. Strengths:Light Weight, XT Components, Good Specialized Components, Value, Manueverable, climbs hills like a champ.
Weaknesses:Brakes lick compared to Arch 40's
Shocks bottom out for me at 210lbs
Those are big items
Similar Products Used:Trek 7000, Big Sur, Kona Caldera, Moab 3, Cannondale F500, GT Avalanche
Bike Setup:UM... Stock except I pulled off all the lame stickers. Weight Savings!!!
Bottom Line:All the other bikes I looked at were comparably set up. They had similar components, frames, and shocks. This bike was about $80 cheaper than the other bikes and its the lightest by about 1.5lbs. The Specialized also had the coolest paintjob which is important in choosing a bike.
This bike is very controllable and easy enough to learn and race on. The shocks will bottom out for those over 200lbs and the brakes lick nutz but other than that it is a good bike and I am very pleased with it.

Strengths:Good price for what you get. Shimano LX/XT. Avid brakes. Manitou SX fork. $879.99. Lightweight. Responsive. Did I say lightweight?
Weaknesses:Had some chain problems. It keeps slipping out on the front but the bike store adjusted it. SOMETIMES it comes off during shifting. After EASY riding, I got a flat both front and rear tires. Thorn resistant tires should fix that. Seat is hard on the ass (gotta stand up for those long rides)

Bottom Line:I have recently experienced the Specialized frame warranty, I snapped a dropout at the chainstay. Frame replaced, and upgraded at my request at a very reasonable price, without question. I have ridden this frame for about 6 hours now and am loving every minute. It responds very well and acellerates like a whippet on speed ! Climbs in the wet up stuff I have walked up before now. Turns in quickly and I can hop logs I couldn't hop before. I will post some more when I have ridden for a bit longer. Thanks to the bike shop for their assistance. I won't be going past them or Specialized. Good service means a lot.

Strengths:Great tires! [see comment (1) below]
Climbs like a goat [see comment (2) below]
Shimano's stock components on this bike are a steal at this price.
Manitou fork [see comment (3) below]
Eye popping in Yellow Metalic and Black
Weaknesses:Bottle cage mounting screws are too low on the seat tube as a result my water bottle has rubbed the paint off the frame.

Rear v-brake cable elbow has clogged twice!

Stock seat MUST be replaced!

Bike Setup:Ditched Shimano "rapid" fire for SRAM 9.0 Grip shift - sweet!!
Specialized Body Goemetry seat - best upgrade you will ever buy!
Bottom Line:(1) I was a little concerned about the tires being suited to all pupose riding (mud, hard pan, loose stuff) after my first two rides. Don't know if they softened since then or what but they really are doing a great job in most conditions.

(2) I've been cleaning obsticals I didn't think were possible.

(3) Only fork I tried in this price range that I couldn't bottom out with my 205 lbs.

This is a race worthy bike - buy it if you are a beginner to intermediate racer or just someone who really wants to hammer on a bike all weekend long - it will not disappoint!
Don't buy it if you really want a steel frame or you're not SERIOUS about your biking

Strengths:Components-this bike is stacked for the price. I looked at Gary Fishers and Marins and this bike came out on top for my price range(around 1,000).
Weaknesses:I had trouble with my fork being out of whack. I called Specialized and they sent me a new bike right away. After this experience, I will never buy from another company again. They have my business for life.
Similar Products Used:Specialized Rockhopper A1 FS, Giant Iguana, Specialized Stumpjumper Comp.
Bike Setup:Yeti speed grips, Specialized Body Geometry seat, Sachs chain(comes stock with KMC), looking to buy new, lighter fork.
Bottom Line:I love this bike. I have ridden more expensive bikes and they are nice, but this bike just fits me perfect. It just feels comfortable. It's easy to maneuver, light and responsive. The only other bike I would buy right now would be a Stumpjumper with a shorter stem and a riser bar( so it is set up like my Rockhopper ). If you are considering buying one, definitely test ride the A1 Pro FS.

Weaknesses:When shifting, the rear occasionally slams into gear harder than normal

Bike Setup:Upgraded handlebar to Titec 141 with Club Roost bar ends--didn't care for the rise bar that comes stock.
Bottom Line:After a test ride, I knew this was the bike I was buying. Of the different bikes I've ridden in this price range, this one is the only one that feels right. With other bikes it's taken me a lot longer to get comfortable with them--With the Rockhopper, I had complete confidence in the bike from the first moment I clipped in. Comes stock with a good set of components that can be upgraded--which I probably won't do until something breaks.
