Decent Parts held up really well
super strongWeaknesses: NoneBottom Line: This bike is a great investment even though its old now you should buy one this was my first bike and i used it for dh, the bike is super strong and loads of fun, if you are just begging the sport this bike is for you it is so easy to get used to and very reliable and doesn't ask for to much attention. superb bike I would reccomend this bike to any one especially a begginner this bike was so fun I think you will like it.

Strengths: Strong wheels and Rear DerailleurWeaknesses: F*cking gay Rockshox Jett C, Front deraileur, SaddleBottom Line: This is good for beginners in Mountain biking. I still have mine cause I can't afford a nicer bike. If you get one toss the fork and buy at least a Judy or a Mari. z5 so you have some suspension. But it is still fairly heavy because of the cro-molly frame. But if you need a Bike for a commuting this would be a good bike. Nice paint job

Strengths: handles like a champ,nice ride, looks goodWeaknesses: a couple of cheap parts that brokeBottom Line: this is a really good hardtail bike fer begginers it can take alot of beatings some of the parts u might need to replace with better ones other than that is bike is the way to go fer begginers or intermediate ryders. specialized has got some quality stuff so the next bike i get is a stumpjumper. so i give it 5 burning hotdogs.

Strengths: I liked the weight of the bike, along with some of the components. Well handabilityWeaknesses: needs tougher rimsBottom Line: I think this bike is great for anyone who is not the top serious rider. I think it's a great deal for the ammount it cost. I put it through some serious *hit and have rode out of it, not only alive, but all intact. Of course if you are looking for something really really serious jump higher. This bike can do 6 feet vertical distance, but I don't know about 10.

Strengths: Light frame, easy to manuver.Weaknesses: componets from specializedBottom Line: Fun bike to ride, pain in the ass to fix. on 2nd day on trail i bent the rear ritchy rim and replaced w/mavic 217.
currently awaiting a new set of race face chain rings after 100mi on trail w/ specialized stock chain rings {garbage the second ring is worn out as well as the chain}overall a nice bike that has lived though a few of my thrash fests but how many more is a question. as well as what cheap componet is going to die next.

Strengths: pretty strong frame probably the only strong thing on it. the bike really doesn't have any real strengths except that it can take a hard beating on boulders at the local park or off cliffs at "fremont older" I almost forgot to tell you how this bike has a really good center of gravity or something cuz it kicks on the turns if you have some high quality tires.Weaknesses: everything including the jett XC which busted 2 months after day after day hard @$$ riding and abuse through all conditions including snow!!!!!! Weight isn't bad but it sure looses once those ghetto accessories come into playBottom Line: this bike is good if you are just starting and have no clue what the hell you are doing like i used to but now its all about the schwinn rocket 88. i suggest this bike to beginners who are just starting to get into mt biking

Strengths: The Ritchey Nitanium tubing gives a comfortable ride.Weaknesses: The stock setup from Specialized, pretty much suchs!!!
The Rockshox Jett XC is to weak, both in springrate as in overall leg-stiffness. The Diacompe brakes are there to brake you in to your death, because they don't have got any power in them. All the bearing stuff (headset, hubs and bottom bracket) with the name Specialized on them, SUCH! Tip: replace the bracket by a XT and you have got a bracket that will last for more than 6000km.Bottom Line: The Jett will go out of my frame soon. I think I will put a rigid fork instead, or a Manitou SX Ti, that my boss has. (I work in the weekend in a bike shop...)
It's a shame about the specialized components. The frame is nice, not light, but forgiving and comfortable. The bright brushed finish still looks nice and you wont see many scrathces on it.

Similar Products Used: I also own a '97 (Build by me in '98) Balance AL750, with a Judy SL LT, ESP9.0SL, XT Magura brakes, Mavic, King etc. This is a ultra stiff frame, which is very well in technical courses. For long distance 50+ km the Rockhopper is far more comfortable. But I like my Balance the best!!!

Strengths: lightWeaknesses: flexBottom Line: I bought this frame from supergo for 150. It's a real good price for a nice frame. It is really light and looks good. The only problem is that it flexes a whole lot, the only good thing is that it doesn't break. It dents pretty easily but i got a two incher in the down tube which makes no difference. Overall its pretty good for light xc, to weak for hard core riding.

quality of components fittedBottom Line: I've had this bike since January and the first thing I had to change were those F'#**/g tyres! No grip if mud was even suggested. Why don't manufacturers change the type of tyres fitted for different seasons?Next when I pulled a jump off some steps the bloody right hand shifter window snapped off? I didn't even touch the damned thing or hit it off anything. Two weeks later the left hand shifter bust and refused to change into the big ring, it went all spungy.Then the non-drive side crank kept falling off? probably due to some bad fitting by the shop I bought it from.The headset then decided it would break and now refuses to tighten up.The wheelset is average if that and they go out of true if you drop off anything over a foot high or land a jump two degrees off.Overall the bike would be good if things didn't break. It responds well and the acceleration is good for a steel bike. so 2 chillisjohnnyOk, what has broken on this bike
