Strengths: Good price, shifts well once you get it dialed in. Frame is pretty light too. V-brakes are solid.Weaknesses: Front NSYNC shock is a joke.Bottom Line: I like the frame. I think that as components require replacement the bike will get better and better. It's served me well as a commuter and occasionall off-roader for 4 years now. Good product for the money.

Strengths: Lightweight and lively ride for the price. Reasonable spec stuff on it. Looks nice in polished finish.Weaknesses: InSync OEM fork uselss. Geometry a bit too casual, top tube a bit too short. No rear disc brake mounts on this model.Bottom Line: For the money the bike is pretty good. Once stuff breaks or wears out and needs to be replaced if you get decent new stuff performance really improves. I changed the fork, brakes and pedals and it made a big difference to my rides. I also changed the stem to a lower rise Titec as Marin's own was way too sit up and beg (well almost). The rest of the stuff on my bike when I bought it is fine.
The ride is good and lively, the frame is not too flexy. The shortish top tube means the front end can come up when climbing, but downhill and singletrack are sorted (if a little skippy sometimes).
Get this bike if you want to get back into riding and need something for the town as well as off road. The latest models are disc brake compatible too.

Strengths: This bike has great frame for climbing and lateral stiffness for uphill peddling. It is a little on the nervous side for steering. The Zokes Trail Z soak up the minor bumps and handle braking without bottoming out (unlike the Manitou Magnums on the Palisades Trail I tried out). It is a nice looking bike. The burnished orange is very tasteful. You don't have to feed it like my daughter's horse.Weaknesses: The rims flex, the SunTour front deraileur is sloppy and slow shifting, the handlegrips could use alittle more beef. The Mythos tires hum on the pavement and slip on the clay. You have to peddle it uphill, unlike my daughter's horse.Bottom Line: It is a wonderful ftting and performing frame and decent enough components to gradually upgrade it as I gradually get more into shape and ride harder.
This is my first bicycle since I peddaled across the US in 1976, so I got the more upright Marin with the idea that it would facilitate conversation. However, the Palisades Trail with the greater stability engineered into the geometry, more speeds, better quality shifters, and lower gearing possibilities would have been more suited for for these mountains, thereby facilitating more conversation while riding.
Who should buy it?
47 year old re-entry riders. I bought it to accompany my 9 year old daughter trail riding on her Appaloosa/Arab pony. I'm having a lot of fun, my wife is throwing me a lot of compliments these days about how trim I'm getting, plus I get to even it out with that horse on some of the downhills. It's good for the heart in more ways than one.
And I bet my daughter could whip anybody reading this review. Uphill racing anyone?
