Strengths:    Fantastic steel hardtail frame. Ride is confident, comfortable, responsive, precise and climbs and decends well. Came speced with a sensible mix of proven Shimano Manitou and Avid components when purchased for the price point. Terrific Columbus frame proves steel still makes for one of the best riding bikes available. Great finish in multi hue green.

Weaknesses:    None - Would have been better if Marin could have built and assembled in US.

    Bottom Line:
The Marin Pine Mountain is an example of a bike that does everything you ask with the soul of steel. Great hardtail for a production cross country bike. Cheers Marin, ride steel. Bike weighs a tad under 24lbs in current build.

Strengths:    Beautiful frame, high spec components including XTR rear mech, light, good handling, SXR forks still plush after two years without being stripped down (and only lubed once!) a delight to own and ride.

Weaknesses:    Minimalist seat stays at the back: i.e. no lugs for a pannier rack, no mounting for a rear disc calliper. (NB earlier models, e.g. 2000 model has pannier rack lugs)

Limited mud clearance at the front between fork bridge and 2.1 IRC tyres.

Adjusters on top of the fork bash the underside of the downtube and chip paint down to bare metal, e.g. when I fall off (embarrassingly often!) and when I put it in the car.

    Bottom Line:
Steel hardtail is still the king for me: light, supple, and the Pine Mountain is as good as steel gets.

Similar Products Used:   Orange P7: probably a nice bike but mine was 2nd hand witrh a mish-mash of components, a tad small and had cheap nasty lumpy tyres which I never got round to changing before the bike got stolen from Marylebone Station.

Trek 930: Also 2nd hand, also too small for me, but seemed to be a very nice bike.

Bike Setup:   Absolutely standard 2001 bike except club roost bar-ends and now running 1.8 tyres.

Strengths:    Fantastic frame. XTR rear shifter and the rest at least LX. SX-R fork! Speed dial 7 brakes mavic 221 s...... Wow. Lovely pearly white frame and mostly black equipment. Stunning.

Weaknesses:    Tacky seat post, it scratches easily. stem also the same but thats only nit picking. The seat (wtb speed 5 has "love channel" bit soft but you might like it, have not got monkey butt tho!!!!

    Bottom Line:
In UK, I challenge anyone to come up with a better bike for 950 uk pounds. Who wants alloy frames, this kicks it into touch and beyond. This is the 2001 bike to die for, absolutely f...ing amazing, I wouldnt change a thing until something breaks. Call me on 07790866894 uk and I will tell ya.!!!!!

Strengths:    Superb Columbus Steel frame, great balance, Good copmponent fit out of box. I like the fork, may need to upgrade the LX stuff eventually. Geometry makes this bike, and the two-tone paint job is easy on the eyes. Overall a pleasure to ride, Marin has made me a life-long customer.

    Weaknesses:    None Yet

    Bottom Line:
Fantastic Ride. I bought it about 3 weeks ago when they were trying to clear out 2000 models for the 2001's, usually $1,100 and I got it for $800. Bike is extremely well-built, smooth and balanced. Easy for climbing, good absorbtion on DH's and off road thanks to Manitou TPC fork and steel Coloumbus Thron frame. I haven't ridden in 2 years and bought this ride, I have been taking it out daily around my neighborhood, through the Presidio, and through some trails on the coast. The bike feels great and rides like a caddy. I suggest it for anyone who likes a lightweight steel bike and wants to do some serious riding, I looked at all sorts of bikes and test rode for 5-6 months, this is the best in its class in my personal opinion.
