Strengths:    Light, tough, dependable

Weaknesses:    Agree with other posts regarding hard to remove rear wheel. Seat wore out fast

Bottom Line:
Hey bought this bike before the FS craze really hit. I've been on this bike for 5 years and ride pretty hard and often. Mostly ride fire roads with single track thrown in for fun. Cant afford a new bike right now so I'm going to ride it till it breaks. So far it seems i will be riding it for a long while. Comfortable to ride, responsive. Sure like the feel of the Columbus steel. Nice and light for climbing. So far I've been happy with this bike.

Strengths:    My trusty Pine Mountain has beejn doing the business since 1991. Yes i know it's time for a new bike, but it's got a few more runs in it before it gets put out to pasture.
Great bike -very responsive and strong.The bike has been hammering the trails for a long time and although the whole groupset has been worn out over time the frame is intact and unblemished.

Weaknesses:    It ways 3 times as much as modern bikes and it doesn't even have suspension

Bottom Line:
cost £600 ten years ago

Strengths:    all round ability
not too harsh a ride
stable on long fast descents
all kit is competent and efficient when clean (brakes are great)

Weaknesses:    chainstay tyre clearance (more even on my 00 frame)
seat tube required reaming

Bottom Line:
It's a good all rounder with an emphasis on XC. I personally don't consider it light enough to race, or comfortable enough to be a great epic bike, its no good for slalom or jumping and the position does not lend enough confidence for some of the sketchier descents I try. If you can only have one bike for a mixture of off-road commuting and messing with the boys then this works very well for the money.

I think the seat tube on my 99 frame cracked due to not being reamed and the 00 frame that replaced it definitely needed reaming. The 99 stock headset and bb were rubbish, but then the overall spec was good value for money.

As long as the shop reams the seat tube for you the rating applies, otherwise 4 overall.

Bike Setup:   purchased 99 model, only used the 138 rims for on the road use 217s and 517s for off-road. Replaced seat (flite italia), headset (Rond cartridge) and bb (Hope Ti) as stock parts wore out. Seat tube cracked, so frame replaced by 00 model under warranty, along with new seat post (Marin Ovation), stem (controltech) and fork outers.

Strengths:    Faultless, well built and light frame, excellent forks, good componentry and light wheels

Weaknesses:    Fork tops hit the frame when the handlebars are turned to about 70 degrees. Rear wheel is difficult to remove due to the skewer nut hitting the rear derallieur.

Bottom Line:
Superb, well built, comfortable and fast bike. Handling is faultless and responsive. Good on the flat, uphill and downhill. The only quibbles I have are the fork tops scratching the downtube and the difficult-to-remove rear wheel. Otherwise a fantastic bike, well worth the money. If you want a light steel bike, this is well worth considering.

Chromoly frame, nice lines, tires grip on the steep stuff.

Weaknesses:
clipless pedals need adjustment and getting used to.

Bottom Line:
Nice ride. This is my first time with a front shock. Top tube length is perfect for my torso. Bombs down hills and climbs like a rabbit. Got a good price end of season.

Strengths:
* Great frame

* Good total package

Weaknesses:
* Forks are adjustable, but hard to tell what level you've adjusted them to.

Bottom Line:
An A-1 bike that I recommend to anyone who rides off-road but also likes to cruise around town. The best asset of the bike is the impeccable chromoly frame.
