rims a bit light

Nice bike for the price. I took off the IRC tyres quite soon after buying it.
Back rims got a flat spot from jumping but I'm 80Kg+ so that might be the problem. Everything else works just like it should. I'm happy

Strength:

I like climbing and so does the bike. Very stiff when cranking in, and out of the saddle. Nice and light. Cool looking. Feels good on the road. Strong, I've hammared this bike for over a year and it loves it!

Weakness:

None so far, but I'll let you know if I find any.

This bike can climb virtually everything. It loves meduim to fast single track, not bad when the going gets really steep and technical, might try a short stem though.

Light, strong Easton Elite frame, good mid-low end shock, good parts trade-off

Weakness:

too cheap headset (broke immediately), saddle and heavy pedals

I was riding an old 19" KHS Descent. It is a cromolly frame with a stem suspension, velociraptors and LX V brakes added. The 19" frame is too short for me (after about 8 years of riding, always has been). Was thinking about going full suspension for a while, but everything cost too much and nothing I tried climbed that well. Was thinking about a new frame and saw the KHS 4000 Alite frame for less than 400. But my old 7 speed transmission and cheap stem shock wouldn't be worth it. I bought the Cane Creek Thudbuster suspension seatpost and really liked the improvement in comfort. Then I started to see the 99 Alite 2000s for pretty cheap. When Nasbar lowered the price to 600, jumped on it.
It's a perfect bike for me. 21", 8 speed, my thudbuster fits, decent fork. I'm probably going to change over my LX brakeset since it is better that what came with it. I'm keeping my decent and converting it to a around town/commuter. KHS really hits the vaule point.

An update review after handling this Alite 4000 (1999) for almost 2 years now.Reliable, light, quick steering, replaceable rear mounting. Strong frame, nothing cracked or gave way, despite 175 lbs.weight pounding on dry crust and potholes, singletracks.

Weakness:

I got used to the poor paintjob. The more scratches the better it looks!

Great bike, no regrets still, any rear suspension cannot give me the climbing power of this hardtail. Perhaps I may try a cromo or titanium for a little more comfort next. Reliable and nothing broken on the frame. The new Alite 3000 looks OK but I cannot get used to disc brakes, so KHS please allow for non disc in the mounting points. I changed to another lighter Marzocchi Bomber X.2, nothing wrong with the first one. Have taken it for road climbs with road tyres (Hutchinson Gold) with a spare set of XTR hubbed Mavic 138s and found nothing inadequate. Could keep up with the roadies.

Strength:

-Mad good frame (Easton Elite tubing)
-Looks phat

Weakness:

-My rear wheel went out of true relatively easily
-"Powertools" components are pretty bad, should be replaced or else suffer loss of dignity
-99 STXRC shifters are crap, they should at least tell you what gear you are on

KHS is a mad good company -- most people haven't heard much about them, but they are truly a great buy. The Alite 2000 has a super nice frame which allows for a great deal of future upgrades -- some companies will charge you a lot of loot for an equally nice frame with the same Easton Elite tubing (say, Rocky Mountain, or Dagger).

I have only a few complaints about this bike; first and foremost, most of the components are crap. You can't reallt take any of the "Powertools" components on the trail without losing face or getting made fun of, but they can be easily replaced. Once you upgrade some of the stuff, the bike is hot.

The KHS frame is super light and very responsive on the trail. Climbs like a monster!!! For the price, I don't think there is a better frame out there. Cool polished finish, and sweet welds. On the trail, it corners real well, and likes to be thrown around. Accelerates quickly!!

Weakness:

The Easton Tubing is a little harsh on the back.

This bike kicks ass for anyone looking for a fast race bike and is on a budget. You can pick the frame up right now from universal cycles for about $330. It is usually $600 or $700. I've got my bike down to about 24.5 lbs, and that is with a lot of average components. If someone took the money to trick this bike out, they could easily have a race bike between 21 and 23 lbs!!! Pretty damn good. On the other hand, if you are just a weekend warrior, and are looking for a comfortable, forgiving ride, go cro-moly or dual suspension. This bike could really use a suspension seat post for the back.

Blue/Orange paint job, light, great price ($1350 CDN in 1998)

Weakness:

Defective Silent Clutch rear hub

This is a great bike for a great price. I have had a lot of good comments on the paint job. The wheels have held up good during races and all other riding. The Z3 Bomber is very smooth and plush for a mid-price fork. If you can't afford to get a super high-end XC bike, KHS has what you're looking for.

Strength:

light, tough, good looks
polished aluminum frame looks great
Easton Tubing

Weakness:

Aluminum can wear you down on long rides (harsh)

This bike climbs very well and tracks like a dream. THe bike is very light and easy to manouvre. The frame is super stiff and can throw a rider around pertty good, stay alert. Recommend a suspension post, or ti post at least, something that will be a little more forgiving on long rides.

Drop offs, descents and jumps are not a problem. This bike can really take the abuse. I've had no mechanicals to speak of. KHS has built a steel replacable hanger, good idea, better than some of the aluminun crap out there.

I really do need a little more time to ride before a real detailed review can be done, but from what I see so far this bike works great. I've only had the bike for three months, but I plan to use it for a long while. I would recommend this ride to any one that is looking for a fast x-country MTB. This is an excellent bike for racing, or hard core endurance riders.

Comfort might be best found in a cromo frame, or if you can afford it, titanium.
