Bottom Line:
its a good frame for my type of riding, weight is not much of importance to me as long as it suits me well, i'm less than 150 lbs, i'm pretty sure i cannot trash it with my kind of riding, as long as i can pedal with it, i'll stay with my gt avalance.

Strengths:
great frame design. strong and not TOO heavy. i have teken alot of crashes on this bike and have not broken the frame....yet. good components for the $$$$.
Weaknesses:
disc sucks...broke it the first day out and it sent me about 35 foot down the mountian. go with hayes.--tires dont have enough tread for loose stuff--rims SUCK!!! they both have 2 flat spots in them. bike rides like this now___-----____-------________. i guess that was kinda my fault too though. seat is okay, but if you got the $$ get a new one.

Bottom Line:
if you are a weekend warrior this is the bike for you. this bike is pretty tough, but not the thing that you would want if you are a big racer. i have tried to do too much with this bike, and have been breaking most of the stuff on it. i will be getting a dual sus. next year. if you have the green to get a new wheelset, this bike will last you forever.

Weaknesses:
Judy Race fork, formula brakes
Similar Products Used:
Giant Yukon (1992)
Bike Setup:
Mavic wheels, Real front hub, XT rear hub, XT derailer, LX front derailer, LX cranks, LX mega 9 shifters, Judy Race fork, formula hydrolic disk in front, mechanical rear.
Bottom Line:
Once the bike was broken in and adjusted it was great until about a year. I am a light weight rider and the Judy Race fork has lost its tension and the rebound won't adjust anymore. The formula disk brakes are strong but the rotors are of poor quality and get out of round really easy and then they whine really bad. The front disk is really strong. The Tioga tires were great but they wore out really quickly. The mavic wheels are very light but need to be trued about once a month. The bike corners well and climbs even better. Overall the bike has been great and with clipless peddles, better front fork, and XT hydrolic brakes the bike would be awsome.

Strengths:
This frame is unbeatable. the geometry is great as well as the strength and rigidy(common for GT frames. Components are excellent for the price but would recomend putting some after-market money into to make it race ready. Wicked color-scheme (black and white)
Weaknesses:
The seat and tires are unacceptable.
Bike Setup:
2000 GT Avalanche, 2001 Psylo SL fork with U-Turn, 2002 Avid BB Mech. disc brakes, Avid Speed Dial Ti levers, Koobi AU Chrono saddle, Cane Creek C2 headset, Bontrager Jones AC tires, Cat Eye Enduro 2 comp., XT der. (F&R), other than that the bike is stock.
Bottom Line:
This is definitly a potential racer if some money is put into it. The frame is unbeleivably reliable, strong, and stiff. Prices should even be down on these bikes now that they aren't the newest models so you could get a really good deal on one. If you spot one scoop it up in a hurry and don't pass it up.

Name, I am a long term GT fan, loving my first GT Tequests in the early 90's!
Weaknesses:
Unfortunately, several. I'm 6'1", 205 lbs and ride fairly aggressive for my size/ In three months, I broke the stock Ritchey pedals, have had multiple spoke breaks, a rebuild of the Judy XC and most recently shredded the rear hub. It seem the Tequesta held up much better.
Bike Setup:
Stock, plus Wellgo clipless pedals, Cateye wireless computer, Profile Design bar ends and Panaracer Fire Pro XC tires
Bottom Line:
I am fairly diasappointed with the bike's durability. I love the GT name and have always whipped butt on guys riding Treks when I rode the Tequesta. But, I have a bud I ride with that owns a much cheaper Trek and has had minimal problems on the same trails and conditions. (And he's 6'4", 230!) With majo component upgrades, (to XTR, or Race Face, this could be a great bike. The frame is real solid!)

Weaknesses:

Bottom Line:
First let me promise not to use the term "bomb proof" in this review. The 2000 Avalanch was my first bike and it has been a great bike. In the beginning I had a few problems with the Syncros stem. After a couple of trips to the LBS and a grinder the problem was solved. Tioga tires were quickly replaced with the better performing Bontrager Jones. Formula disc brakes are a joke. Last I heard they completely pulled out of the US and left GT high and dry. Will swith to Avid manuals ASAP. Koski rear brakes are excellent as well as the LX/XT components. Have broken several cheapo spokes built into the Mavic 221 wheels. Richey Logic pedals perform OK and the R.S. Judy fork is solid. SDG Grand Prix saddle tore after 2 months but is still comfortable even with the nose taped up. Overall, this bike is a fun ride! Now that the 2001'S are out you can pick up this bike for a good price. Plan on a few extra bucks in upgrades over time and you will have a great bike for a while.

Strengths:
I own an 2001 Avalanche 2.0. This bike is very fast, mostly because of the stiffness of the frame. It's also fairly light and climbs steady. This bike is equipped with some sweet Syncros rims and when you add kevlar spokes it makes them completely bullet-proof. The Avid front disk is awesome and recommend you put a rear one on to balance it out. Nothing about the bike is bad, overall a good bike for the buck.
Weaknesses:
The rear LX stock deraileur and front deore do not like to get dirty. I'm not sure if it's the rear sprocket or the chain, but high gears on the middle sprocket are jumpy when muddy. The Rock Shox Judy C came right off and I put on my Manitou 3. The Manny 3 is almost 2 lbs lighter and makes the bike ride faster and stiffer. The Rock Shox Judy is a big heavy dog. Get rid of it GT!
Similar Products Used:
Trek 7500
Bike Setup:
Manitou 3 front shock and kevlar spokes, everything else stock, upgrading to all XT components.
Bottom Line:
Overall the bike is impressive out of the box. Very happy with the ride, the components could be balanced better (front and rear derailuers and heavy front suspension) but overall I give it thumbs up for the athletic weekend warrior that has some aggression to release before he gets back to work on Monday.

Great frame (but that's just GT in general). Disc brake on the front and disc-ready in the rear (that is a HUGE plus, because it saves you quite a bit of money).
Weaknesses:
Frame sizing options. I noticed that GT switched from the 1999 sizing scheme which was by measurement (15", 16", 18" etc.) to this S, M, L beeswax. It's a way of producing fewer size options without directly admitting to it. I own a 1999 16" GT as well, which fits perfectly. I didn't want to go with the small, so I ended up with a medium, which is a tad bit to large in terms of standover height. Stem can be changed and saddle can be altered, but my nuts cannot be moved.
Similar Products Used:

Bike Setup:
Replaced LX shifters with XT shifters. Replaced LX cogset with XT cogset. Replaced stock headset with Chris King headset.
Bottom Line:
Great bike for the money. GT frames are, in general, well built even when they're not built in the U.S. GT cleverly puts a red white and blue sticker on the left chainstay that says "Designed in Southern California USA" which is rather silly. People seek American-built. I've never heard of anyone caring if something was designed in America. I haven't had the bike very long, but it rides extremely well. This is my first disc brake equipped bike, and I must say it's a welcome change. I will almost certainly add one to the rear wheel. The rear wheel, of course, is disc ready. At $1000, this is a fantastic bike. I'm very happy with it.

This is a follow up post.. I LOVE THIS BIKE! Ive been riding the 2000 Avalanche for almost a year now.. and what a great ride its been! There are some minor tweaks that Id recommend to make this bike an even better performer.(I´m following the "If its not broke, don´t fix it philosophy) First, Replace the stock Tiogas. At first I didn´t feel that they needed to be replaced. Well Id attribute that to riding mostly on hard pack where they were acceptable. Get into anything loose.. and you´ll wish you had more tread. Second, get rid of the Syncros headset and stem. Ive had nothing but problems with mine (stem). The top cap is made of plastic! why?? If this cracks out on the trail.. beware. Replace that combo with a "higher" quality set up. Third, the Mavic 221 rims seem to be a little weak. They WILL bend if abused.. At this time all other components have operated and performed flawlessly. GT really had their (stuff) together when they built this bike.. and to get it to the consumer at such a great price.. what were they thinking? I know, just how much GT cares about their fans!! From what Ive heard you can pick a 2000 model up at a discounted price due to the release of the 2001`s. SWEET!

I was test riding all kinds of stuff, mostly in the 2000 clams range. This bike felt better, looked better and IS better than most of the pricey stuff out there. The Klein was clunky, the Voodoo was twitchy and fragile, the IBIS was not worth the money and Treks are garbage. The stock stuff was excellent, the Judy race makes my life easier. The front disk will take getting used to. Frame is cross country happy, unlike a lot of GT's other bikes. This bike is a diamond in the rough. This bike f#%@ing rocks...it does it all...it is light, and extremly strong. the triple triangle frame on it has put up with all my abuse, minus the defected xt deore rear deraillier, (but my shop took care of that), and you've gotta love the judy xc, and its 4" inches of travel.
Weaknesses:
the rims...the mavic221's have got to go. don't even screw around with them, they both taco'd within the first month. i put on some bontrager mustangs and have had no problems since.

Woah, so many strenghts, well, the triple triangle frame is amazingly strong and nukeproof, and pretty light too. Disc brake is amazing, littls squeak, (!!!!IF U HAVE THESE BRAKES, ALWAYS PUT THE WHEEL ON FLAT ON THE FORK, OTHER WISE THE ROTOR BENDS, TRUST ME!!!!) i'm a freerider, and weigh 130 lbs (14 years old). everything bout the bike is incredible. Bottom Line:
well, really, this bike is a perfect freerider for me. Judy race is best, and it's still light enough to rid the trails at the races, also makes a good reliable long distance epic rider too. This bike rocks! Love the frame - the weight, the geometry, the stiffness. It's an extremely comfortable fit, very rugged, and handles on technical stuff like a dream. The Judy Race fork is fantastic. The front disk is great, but also love the stock rear V brakes. Have had a lot of comments from friends that tried my bike that the rear V brakes worked exceptionally well.
Weaknesses:
The only complaint I have is that the front disk really squeals when it gets hot. It's not only the noise, but it seems to also affect the braking ability when going downhill. The hydraulic operation is cherry, just trying to decide if I should switch it out for a different hydraulic disk setup. I've heard that not all of them have this problem.

Bottom Line:
Go get it. This is one of the best bikes for your money. I got mine during the end of the season clearance and they knocked off a few hundred bucks. I almost got the Trek 7000, and had researched for about 3 months before buying the GT, but it came down to GT's reputation of building quality bikes, the triple-triangle frame geometry, you can't beat the quality of the components they put on this bike for the price, and most other bikes I looked at that came stock with front disk were priced at hundreds of dollars more. I plan on having this bike for the next 20 years. This is the first GT I've owned, and if I were to ever buy another one, I'd go straight for a GT.

Strengths:
Awesome value for a very well put together bike. i'd recommend this bike to any kind of rider looking for a solid hardtail and a brain that tells them they don't need to have a litespeed to ride well anywhere.
just took it out to Pisgah, NC and gave it a beating. bike was tight, quiet, and ate up everything i could dish out. handled incredibly well and i was able to pull off some stuff i didn't think possible.
love the judy race...very plush. front disc hasn't been bad, little squeeky after a while. i was a little unsure about the koski rear v-brake, but it's great. LX hollowtech cranks are fantastic. ritchey pedals good so far. disc-ready xt rear hub is awesome. drivetrain solid so far. frame is solid, good geometry and feel. like the wise riser bars.
Kind of wanted an easton frame, but after riding this, i would have to say that this frame might way a few more ounces, but it's probably just as strong...so don't buy the sales pitch.
Weaknesses:
Wheelset could be better: the front 221 just about taco'd after first tumbler. tioga tires have very shallow tread that is poor for traction in steep climbs.
Shifting a little tough, i'm going to adjust, see if that works.
Paint seems to chip pretty easily...not the end of the world though.
Similar Products Used:

Bottom Line:
If you can't afford to spend over a thousand, this is the bike! Buy a 2000 anywhere you can get one, buy don't be so quick to buy the new 2001's, they've done some downgrading.
GT has fantastic customer service from what i'v seen which should be high on your priority list as a consumer (don't go near small companies who don't have the service)
All components are in the top of the line category without paying needless dollars. this bike would perform very similar to a zaskar or any other top of the line specialized, fisher, trek, hardtail.
Great on technical, fantastic on the climbs (overall light and rear xt mega 9 was good)
I might suggest getting some 517's, a king headset, new tires if ya got the $$$.

test rode specialized stumpjumper comp, kona pahoehoe
Bike Setup:
Stock except Serfas seat (so my boys can live long and strong), bar ends. More changes to come: XT front derailer, new tires, and I'll take about an inch off both sides on the bars. I'll also put a disc on the back, as the hub is already set up for it.
Bottom Line:
This really is a fantastic bike. Going into my search, this was 3rd on my list, but after test riding the stumpjumper and the kona this bike stood far above them both. The disc brake is really responsive (soft when you want it, hard when you need it). The Judy Race shocks are amazing - light, very little rebound, etc. The weight is good for the setup: just under 25 lbs. GT didn't cheap on the components - mostly XT, Ritchey pedals, etc. The bike just feels really tight.
The front derailer (Deore LX - while all the other components are XT) was weak from my first test ride and will be replaced, but you can't complain at this price. I'm pretty baffled as to why GT would put such weak tires on an otherwise incredible bike. I was having a LOT of traction problems on some downhill trails. Also, the bars are made for a freakin' gorilla or something, so I'll be taking off a little on each end. All of these criticisms are here just to let you know, and are all very minor.
Bottom line is that this bike is a great buy; fantastic components at a great price. I highly recommend it.

It makes the downhills a little less hairy in wet conditions. Ive had no traction problems with the Tioga Extreme XCs.. been great so far for mud/rocks/roots. Weaknesses:
A little heavy, tires are useless in mud and for cornering.
This bike was a great buy for the $999 I paid for it. It has a good selection of quality components. It is a little heavier than I wanted but the good looks and components persuaded me, besides a heavier bike is more stable and has less vibration. It climbs great and the front tire stays down. If you're riding mud, you will need to switch tires immediately. I am running Velociraptors which corner and climb far superior to the stock Extreme XC's. I read alot about the Mavic 221's bending easy but mine remain true after 2 months of very hard riding. The Judy Race makes rocks and logs disappear on steep downhills, keeping the front tire on the ground which is necessary if you don't like treebark for lunch. I plan to put a disc brake in the rear when I get the money but overall the bike is great and I highyly reccommend it.
