Favorite Trail:ANY THING IN THE WEST
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $1199.00
Purchased At:Macomb Fitness
Strengths:Good Value for the Dollar in 1999. Light and Loves to climb climb climb. I have a lightspeed and this bike is every bit as good plus its retro and old and people still like it
Weaknesses:Front Shock is a bit to heavy and the wheels flex
Similar Products Used:SC Blur and Lightspeed Frames
Bike Setup:Complete Rebuild. Bontrager Race Lite Disc with tubless pythons. Sram x.9 front and rear der and shifters. Easton Monkey Light Carbon low riser bar and stem. Thompos Seat Post Sette Carbon Seat, SID TEAM fork. XT Cassestte, SRAM PG 991 Chain. Avid Juicy 7 Brakes, and XTR Hollow Tech Crank. Yette Grips
Bottom Line:This bike has served me well for a decade. I was going to sell her on ebay and said what the hell lets give it another go round. I used ebay to buy all the part and replace everything but the frame. She weights abour 22 pound give or take an ounce. I spent under 700 in this budget rebuild and it ride just as good as the new fishers. I recenly ran the expert class in a local event and came in 3rd in a field of 200 riders. When she finally breaks I will donate her organs to the next whip

Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $350.00
Purchased At:from a friend
Strengths:This bike's strength is just about everything. The rear derailleurs are great (XT) and the front are so so. The weight is great. Very, Very agile. I guess the genesis does work. Also, the frame is the sturdiest i have ever seen. The paint job isn't so bad either. i guess it is a bit bright but i have been getting compliments. Speed
Weaknesses:The only thing i found were the brakes since the sqealed a little bit but other than that, nothing.
Similar Products Used:Trek 8000
Bottom Line:This bike is great. It's got handling like no other. this is probably the best hardtail of 99. This is a good bike for bikers that ride a lot! this bike can take all the beating. This bike is perfect for cross country for it's agility and speed. This bike can take a beating. If you are however, just into recreation, then don't buy a brand new one, it's a bit overpriced. But if you're going to use it a lot, it is definately worth the money. This is a great bike.

Bottom Line:If you are a racer or want to start racing on a hardtail, this bikes for you. If your a recreational rider I probaly wouldn't buy it for more than $500 canadain because it will be used, but that's just my opinion. I love this bike for going up hills and through singletrack. Whenever I saw a hill on my old bike I groaned and would just make it over the top. On this bike hills aren't a problem anymore, it's that good. It's a blast to use, so if you see one for sale get it.

Favorite Trail:Mount Kusenbu, Kyushu, Japan
Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $300.00
Purchased At:swapped with friend
Strengths:Lightweight, climbs extremely well, rides well for a hardtail, very agile, descends ok
Weaknesses:Paint falls off, overpriced if you buy new, not fun down stairs
Similar Products Used:Giant ATX840, Specialized Hardrock, Specialized Stumpjumper FSR, plus loads of other hardtails of varying brands and quality
Bike Setup:RS Taichi forks (not Rockshox, but a Japanese brand), Shimano LX 9 speed drivetrain, wide riser bars, IRC Backcountry 2.25 tyres, XT brakes
Bottom Line:Excellent cross country or trailbike. Climbs very well, and nice through technical sections. I got this from a friend who swapped for a dual suspension bike. He stripped all the good bits from the Fisher. The old Manitou forks were shot, so I swapped the lightweight forks and other bits from my Stumpjumper onto this. I use this for long rides with lots of climbing and smoother surfaces, and the rebuilt Stumpjumper for rougher courses. I've been through a lot of different bikes (I repair and rebuild a lot for friends) and this is easily the nicest hardtail I've ridden. Not impressed with the paint, and I think it's overpriced to buy new, but can't fault the performance.

Strengths:Easton aluminum frame rocks! really nice fork - Rock Shox Judy XC, XT derailleur, bontrager race wheelset, sweet paint job(red > black > yellow) the one they show on this site
Weaknesses:lx cranks. broke some teeth off of the middle ring. stock brake pads squealed horribly. uh, other than that, nothing else. oh yeah, the paint chips on the rear triangle really easy, and strap type bike racks are bad news for the decals.
Similar Products Used:specialized rockhopper? schwinn

Bottom Line:this bike rules. i raced it for almost three years and had no problems with it. it is a really stiff ride, but its a really stiff aluminum frame. it tracks really well, and feels really nice in the air. it is sold as a professional level xc race bike(or was when i bought it, '99) but i've bashed it way hard dropping off of things and crashing. it is one tough unit. makes for a perfect trail bike, i think. the paint job looks really nice. the colors were what pulled me toward the bike at the shop in the first place. i give it five flamin' chilis. yeah.

Great handling, light as a feather.
Red and white paint - beautiful.
Comfy women's specific seat.

Weaknesses:Decals tend to peel off.
Manitou SX-R fork (would have liked a Rock Shox).

I really love the fact that it fits me (I'm 4'11") perfectly.
Gary Fisher did a great thing when he made a women's specific bike. It's not just smaller, it actually has different geometry. I had a hard time finding a high-end bike small enough, until I found the Paragon.
With my wheel set it just flies.
I'd recommend upgrading the wheel set, as the Bontranger Superstock is actually quite heavy. I got the whole bike < 23lbs.

Makes you go look for mountains - makes climbing enjoyable
Weaknesses:Paint work - it PEELS at the slightest touch.
chain-sucks, maybe due to the LX cranks - 9 speed?
BECAREFUL when tightening the front derailleur (?), it may dent the seat tube - its quite weak/soft there.
Bottom Line:I love my paragon. It is a good bike and as for as I can tell - I think the genesis thing does work. My previous bike was a no-namer (by world standard) and I remember when I was on it every hill was a torture and I really enjoyed the downhills more. But with the Paragon, the opposite seems to happen...I love the uphills now. And yes, the paint peels like oranges. Lucky its aluminium underneath it orelse I would be spending all my free time touching it up to avoid rust. Oh-yeah, it does chain suck though. And its quite bad...I haven't resolved that yet...maybe its the 9 speed. I am giving it 5 stars because I always enjoy the ride on the paragon.

Weaknesses:When I find one I'll let you know.
Bike Setup:Stock. LX/XT mix, Judy XC, Velociraptor tires...
Bottom Line:If you can find a 99 model, RUN, don't walk, to the dealer and buy it. The 99 is better than the 2000 or 2001 due to the EASTON tubing, which isn't used in the others. This mount climbs, accelerates, and handles like a dream. Don't buy any other hardtail without riding this bike first.

Other then derailleur adjustments and I rebuilt my fork I have had to do no maintenance on my bike. I've also taken my bike dirt jumping and although the wheels may seem like their strictly for cross country I have proved otherwise. This bike would make a great dual slalom bike but in that case I would change the wheels.

Weaknesses:LX cranks/front derailleur

Similar Products Used:Trek 8000
Bike Setup:Stock except for Fizik Pave saddle (I swap it back and forth between my road bike)
Bottom Line:I got my Paragon last fall at a closeout for $850 - this is a fantastic bike at a great price. I was going to get a Trek 8000 but fell in love with the Genesis geometry when I tried it - it climbs like a mountain goat and handles with razor-sharp precision (it does get a little twitchey on steep downhills). The XT rear derailleur is bullet-proof - it's been through the worst mud, rain and snow of New England's single track and never misses a shift. I can't say the same for the front derailleur, but I guess that's what you get with LX stuff. The Bontrager wheels are fantastic - I haven't had to true them once in a year. As for the RE-1 pedals, I too was pleasantly surprised - I was all set to get Time ATAC's until I rode the RE-1's a couple of times and found that I liked them. The only thing I've changed on the bike is the saddle - the stock Bontrager was too mushy and slippery for me, so I put my Fizik Pave racing saddle on (as a side note, it's the best saddle I've ever ridden). The only other adjustment I've made was to trim about an inch off each end of the stock bars - they were too wide for single tracking and made me feel like I was driving a bus.

As for the controversial paint job, I've had no problems with the paint peeling or getting chipped. To each his own - I personally like the red/yellow/black mix - it gets great comments from fellow trail riders and it beats the boring paint jobs of most bikes out there.

Bottom Line:Still a fantastic bike 10 months later (last review 11-99).
Nice, stiff, fast frame and Genesis geometry results in a great handling bike. Much more stable/confident descents, and better climbing ability as well. Also, this bike handles the tight stuff better than my previous bikes with shorter wheelbases. Sure, the geometry initially takes some getting used to, but I'd never go back. Further, the bike just keeps on working flawlessly every ride; I'll do basic maintenance and cleaning, but I do not baby this bike. I got this for just under a grand, and it was worth every penny (and many hundreds less than an almost identically spec'd Klein). I'm about to buy a road bike-I only wish Gary made some.

Bottom Line:So far, so good. I bought the bike for $850 on closeout, after seeing it priced all last year in the $1200-$1300 range. The tires seem to grip extremely well on sandy stuff, and the fork does an OK job soaking up the bumps. Most likely I just haven't found the perfect setup on the fork yet.

The RE-1 pedals have out-performed my expectations, and they have moved from near the top of my upgrade list to the bottom. The rear derailleur is absolutely money...it hasn't so much as hesitated on me yet. I'm sure I'll upgrade the LX stuff as it breaks, and everything will be XT within a year or so.

The bike climbs extremely well. At times I have to make a conscious effort to center my weight a bit, but I really think that shorter stays and long top tube do what GF said they would do; namely, put the rider in a really well balanced riding position.

I demoed a few other bikes, and I felt most comfortable on the Paragon. I can see myself riding this frame for a long, long time.

Now would somebody tell Gary to do something about the paint jobs? The 2000's are worse than the 99's.

Bike Setup:Stock so far. When I can afford it i'll upgrade cranks and bottom bracket. And maybe seat (jury's still out).
Bottom Line:I reiviewed this bike after testing it at the bike shop. Now that i've got some riding time, this is what I think:

GREAT FRAME!!! super stiff, tracks well, climbs great, descends just as good.
Quality components throughout, although they could've thrown in an XT bottom bracket. The cranks creak when I pedal hard on the big chainring.
I really like the fork. Very plush and quiet. The boots suck but the fork is great.
At first I wasn't sure if I liked the paint job. Now I love it. All other bikes look boring to me now. I feel like every thief in Indy has their eyes on me when i'm riding it though.
The seat is a bit hard. I'll probably change it if it keeps gettin' to me, but for now it's fine.
The XT rear der. is silky smooth. The LX front misses quite a bit but nothing a few minor adjustments can't fix.
I can't get over how sweet this thing climbs. When I get in a little better shape, I probably won't find a hill I can't conquer. The tires grip well, though feel somewhat slow on hardpack, but overall, I like them.
Surprisingly I really like the Bonti RE-1 pedals. After reading the reviews of them I didn't think I would. So far I think I like them better than my Shimano 545's.
The rear hub is loud!!! anyone else notice this? Rides nicely but everyone knows i'm comin'.
Now to rate this sweet machine: What do you look for in a bike? Frame, fork, component selection, cost, FIT!!! Well, it fits me like a glove. It cost me $899 on closeout. I love the fork. Even with a few minor problems with the components, I don't blame that on the bike itself, but the component manufacturer's and the bike shop mechanic who put it together. Even though I think everyone wants to give their ride a top rating, I truly believe this bike deserves it.
After shopping around for literally months, I couldn't decide between this and the Klien Attitude Comp. The Klien has a sweet frame and good components, the Paragon has an "almost" as sweet frame and better components. When I found this for the price that I did, I had to buy the Paragon.
No regrets so far!!! I'm looking forward to a long-lasting relationship with my Fisher.

Bike Setup:i've actually got the ziggurat, so i've got the xtr rear der., and had the judy sl. now have '00 judy race.
Bottom Line:this bike has the best aluminum frame in the industry.bikes tubes aren't huge they are just right. it has a 31.6 seat tube and a chain stay arch that is down right beefy. the bike "handles likes it's on rails." the genesis geometry is rightously named. in the beginning there was fisher, and he had the bright idea of a shorter stem and chainstays. both are rightous. the shorter stem not only keeps you from flying over the front so often, but gives you noticeably quicker steering. the only reason genesis geometry gitz any beef is 'cuz they're not used to its benefits. give'em some time and you'll see more and more of it. the judy sl's were quite nice and plush, but those stupid cartridges. i don't know if the xc's are as bad, but the '00 judy races are sweet. the tensile strength as i stated is lacking. first i broke off the entire toe piece of the re-2s and then i was literally pulling the spokes out on the drive side of the bontrager races rear wheel. what is amazing though is the fact that it stayed perfectly true even though i could count at least 6 cracks in the wheel. trek did warrenty both items, but they did take their time 'bout it. overall i love the bike and it was a great upgrade from what i was riding before, a diamonback wcf 4.0.

It's got some sweet specs. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and I think this baby is beautiful. Maybe not the best looking bike, but the best deal on the planet in my opinion. Bottom Line:I really started getting into mountain biking in '98, although my bike was a piecer. I killed it last summer, but had saved up about a thousand bucks and wanted something that I could beat on pretty hard. I selected the paragon largely based on reviews from this site. This bike certainly can take a beating, and is at home in pretty much any terrain. It goes up like Clinton, down like Monica, and rages through tight, twisty, technical singletrack. I was totally impressed by the way it handles; the bike just flows with your every whim and moves like it's a part of you. The Bontrager and WTB stuff are excellent (besides the V-raptor front tire, which tends to wash out). People bitch a lot about the Judy XC fork, but I really have no problems with it. For what it costs, it works fine. My only complaints are the shimano gear (which I couldn't possible avoid ending up with, so that doesnt matter); and the flashy, bright, please-steal-me paint job. I'm a little worried about taking this bike to college with me next year, but I'll probably get a huffy or something for spinning around campus and reserve the paragon for REAL riding. Anyway, if you are in the market for a serious hardtail and don't have a ton of cash to cough up, the Paragon will not disappoint you. It's an excellent bike. 5 raging flamers for this baby!

I am a little disappointed with the lack of full XT components on the bike - I can see upgrading the LX stuff to XT/XTR next year. Also the spoke guard has started this nasty squeaking and no amount of cleaning or tuning makes it go away. Apart from that this is the best bike I have ever owned and breaking the bank to buy it ($1600 CDN) was well worth it. I give it 5 stars easy. Lightweight, fast, Fisher Quality. Long cockpit difficult to turn in tight singletrack. Back tire sits uneven in frame stays causing it to creak on pedal torque. I mistakenly thought this sound was coming from the bottom brackett. Dealer suggested this was due to paint build-up and is now positioned fine and not creaking at all.

This bike is a precsion machine that is very tight in the trails and responsive in technical areas. The frame is the key. For superior performance the components can be simply upgraded, but the frame is a great base to start with. Bottom Line:I did about 2 1/2 months of homework before making my purchase. I read every MTB magazine I could get my hands on, talked to friends and riders I met on the trail, and researched this site heavily. After all of that work, it still came down to my hitting the pavement and testing some bikes. The sales people at my local bike shop(s) didn't seem too excited about any of the Gary Fisher bikes that they stocked. They were reluctant to allow me to even test ride them at first, but when I did, I was glad I did. The Genesis Geometry works in my case, and the bike was MUCH more comfortable to ride than I had originally anticipated. Compared to my old bike, this one accelerates like it has a rocket strapped to it. The bikes cornering is very responsive, which is something I did not expect. Climbing is a piece of cake, compared to my old steel frame bike. I find that I can take hills at least two gears higher than I could on my old Alight. Decending is probably the thing that the Paragon does best. The stability of this bike while going downhill is incredible. It is a great bike for the price, considering I picked mine up at the end of the model year for $959.00. Where bike reviews are concerned, I firmly believe that 5 chilis is perfection, so I will give the Paragon a strong 4!

I loved my old G/F, it climbed really well, but this is faster. It got me started on an exercise program so I could keep up with the bike. Only problems I have are that it is a much stiffer frame than the old steel one, and I tend to bounce it after landing a big air. The Quick Release levers also take some tightening or they won't hold. Once they break in they're OK, but check that seat post before your race!
And those Bontrager Race wheels look so good you cringe when you bang 'em against something. They should be framed in my living room. If that isn't enough, it's the same frame as the procaliber, so I look just like Andy Bishop! (who still kicks my a$$ at every race)

Bottom Line:A great mix of components and wheels on a very good frame. True to the Genesis marketing BS the bike does what is promised in its ads. It climbs like some unseen force is helping it. You do stay in one position on the bike through a lot of riding conditions because the bike handles more than you can believe. Really tight single track is easily handled. At low speed the bike has great balance. Higher speed down hills the bike can feel nervous and you can tend to over steer the bike. I soon found myself relaxing and letting it rip by pointing it down and holding on letting the bike blast through stuff that I would have never thought of doing on my old Mt-bike. The XC long travel fork work well in the ruff stuff and soak up the chatter really well. What a far cry from the first series of sus-forks, these things work. Glad I went with a rigid the lighter weight is so goooood!

The Paragon's Genisis Geometry makes it a surperb cilmber, handler, and accelerator. The Bontrager Race wheelset is strong, light, and looks cool with the yellow paint on the rim. Last but not least the Paragon looks great with it's Red/Black/Yellow paint along with a Red Judy XC (awesome fork by the way),Red grips, and Black and Red saddle.
Weaknesses:
The Paragon is not as light as it could be. Remember that the bike is only $1,200. It's not a high-zoot racing machine straight out of the box. Although with some extra money, it could be. Don't get me wrong it's a sweet deal on an awesome bike and is made for a serious mountain biker. The Paraon is built for function not comfort.

Swapped 105mm stem out for 120mm to fit 6'2 rider.
Bottom Line:I've had this bike about a month and a half. I've put over 350 of mostly singletrack on it, including one race and getting hit by a pickup truck. I feel like I've given it a fair shake.
Five big flamin chilis. This bike rocks. Not that I'd say it's for everybody. This is not a comfort bike -- it's built to go fast, to hell with your butt. And while Genesis geometry has great advantages, it does take getting used to. The handling at speed on twisty singletrack is magnificent. Smooth, firm, and precise. This is the first (and the second) thing you notice about the bike. It's just too much fun. At the same time, the rearward shift in the center of gravity relative to conventional geometry means that I've had to make a lot of adjustment to the way I do very steep technical uphills. (On non-technical climbs, however, the stiff rear triangle gets you up there like nobody's business.) The long wheelbase and more relaxed front end make very tight, low speed maneuvering more difficult, but you can blaze down a fire road at warp speed with total confidence. The '99 Judy XC shock is super plush and responsive. Eats the small stuff for breakfast and has plenty left for the big hits. Life is compromise, but from my point of view, the Fisher Paragon makes all the right compromises for a bike meant to appeal to the real cross-country hardtail purist. Every detail makes good sense. It costs a few bucks, but, boy, it is all bang.

Bottom Line:

I got my Paragon about three weeks ago. Before I bought this I rode a $500 '95 Fisher Aquilla. Although, I thought the Aquilla had alot of bang for the buck there is absolutely no comparison.
I was concerned about the harshness associated with aluminum frames, but this is not the case with the Paragon. It handles the rocks and deadfalls that are part of my usual ride with ease. I was most impressed, though, with the handling. It is light and quick, and this bike just sticks like you wouldn't believe. The genesis geometry really helps provide traction when climbing and makes it easy to get off the back when descending. I am getting away with things that I never would have on my old bike. The bike is spec'd with some nice components too. The new Judy XC is outstanding. Supple enough to take the small hits, and stiff enough for the big ones. I have never had such an active shock. I also was impressed with the Bontrager wheel system. I have beaten on them quite a bit already, and they are absolutely true. They also look pretty cool. I like the way all of the components match the frame. Yellow wheels and a red fork on a red and yellow frame. It is nice not to have the bike look like a bunch of assorted parts that were just slapped together.
Overall, I think it is a great bike. I am trying to think of some criticism to balance out this review, but I can't.
If you notice, the only people that have given poor reviews to this bike have not even ridden it. That should tell you something.

I'm a Fisher man from way back. Sooo far back, like 1983. I have been riding my Montare that long. Loved the bike so much never thought of getting anything else until recently. After several months of deliberations, and even considering other manufacturers, Fisher still comes ahead. The Paragon for 1999 is the most bang for your buck out there in a performance ship. The team colors are gorgeous, the Bontrager package sets if off, and there is not a sound from the drivetrain. Steering is light as a feather. What more could you want? I am literally amazed at the leaps and bounds which have been made in the field in the last 10 years it is incredible. Although I was somewhat skeptical of the RS Judy XC after some reviews here, it seems to be doing fine and I love the ride with front suspension. Maybe someday upgrade to a nice bulletproof Bomber. But the Paragon is spec'ed so nicely that anyone with a modicum of experience should appreciate this machine as a work of art and engineering marvel. Highly recommended! Also, get a Fisher catalog and read it! I mean every page! It is weird at first, but the thing begins to make sense after a while --- scary. After digesting it nightly for a week, you will be a convert and you will never ride another brand. But, you have to kind of get over Gary Fisher's picture on just about every single page. My wife thought was a little ridiculous, but what the heck, it's the man's right, I guess? Still, when all is said and done, the Paragon is hot, hot, red-and-yellow-hot!! Thank you Gary Fisher!

I am looking into getting A GF to replace my Y-bike, but I had to write a review for what Micheal from Vancouver said. Heavy? Hmm...I didn't think that 3.2 pound for a frame is heavy, what are you riding? A helium filled bike? Weak frame? Let me see now...I find it interesting that GF frames are weak and you say Trek is so strong. I guess you didn't know that Trek is the parent company of GF and are manufacturing the GF frames (Trek and GF frames have different geometry though). A Judy T2 plush? I guess it would be considered plush about 4 or 5 years ago. Try looking at some of the new forks sometime and then you can learn what plush is about. Hey Micheal there are some new forks that were released over a year ago and some newer ones too! Try take a look at Bombers, Hydrocoils and Manitous. I think you will get all excited inside about their plushness! Although I am not a racer, I do ride a couple times a week. I do think GF is trying some neat stuff this year and probably will eventually get one this year. I hope other racers give more reviews, since you friend from Vancouver seems to be concentrated on midline level of bikes and his friend (or boyfriend?) Brad.

Hey Micheal below, first of all, learn to spell you name correctly. Then if you think your life is worthless, you don't have to make stupid judgements on things you're too dense to grasp. Gary Fisher bikes are among the most awesome mass-production mountain bikes on the planet and the Paragon, especially in its 1999 guise, is a top-drawer trail performer. The price for the '99 version may have gone up, but you get some really trick components like the new light Bontrager Race wheelset and crankset. And the double butted Easton Program aluminium frame is almost as light as that of a Klein hardtail. So stay out of here if you're still feeling miserable!
