Strengths:    Santa Cruz built Bontrager Race Frame. Phenomenally strong frame. Extremely nimble frame geometry, clibs well, descends well both at speed and in the technical sections.

Did I say it was nimble? Stronger thenthe Ted Wojciks, FATs and Crolls, not as stiff as the yo Eddy!

Weaknesses:    No Le Existe. The Santa Cruz made frames are only found on eBay from time to time, but are usually a great bargain for well under $1000. Powder coat paint is wicked durable, but bland. decals are...boring. But KB designed the most durability into the frame and chose powder coat and huge frame decals for that specific reason.

No rack/fender mounts.

Bottom Line:
To get the most out of one of these frames (race lite has same geometry but is 1/2 lb lighter and more flexible - for light riders only)you need to have a fork that is designed to match it - the bontrager frok crown (find it on eBay) If you throw a super ong travel fork on it you throw the handling out of whack.

This is my favorite bike for highly technical rides where I'm going to be hopping over lots of logs, sketchy downhills (not super-drop type stuff, more like thread the needle and keep the wheels on the ground)

Find one on ebay grabit - it is an awesome bike.

Strengths:    Climbs, climbs, and climbs. Stand up, sit down, this bike does not lose the rear wheel when climbing no matter how hard, steep, loose, the trail is.

Weaknesses:    Can't get 'em any more.

Bottom Line:
I'll never buy a new bike...

2001 XSL Race questions....

so I picked up a factory stock 01 XSL race that had been in storage for the past 8+ years. noticed the recall online before buying it and asked the original owner if he had said recall done he said he did not and he never had an issue.. The bike is pretty damn flawless except for needing tires/tubes ... Read More »

To rebuild or not to rebuild my Marzocchi Bomber Atom Race 2001?

For the last few years I have been rigid and single. I'm thinking now about putting back together my RM Hammer to its mostly original state, right now it's in a rigid fork drop bar mode. I mostly ride other wheels, but I used to have so much fun on this 26er. The big question is whether or not to re ... Read More »

Add Lockout to 2001 SID Race?

I have a 2001 RockShox SID Race on my GT I-Drive Team. This is dual air with positive and negative air on the left fork leg. Their is a plain cap on the right fork. Is there anyway I can put a lockout on this fork? I believe the 2002 version of this fork has a lockout, but I don't know what ... Read More »

2001 RS Psylo Race Dual Air Tube

I have a 2001 RS Psylo Race (yep the ugly gold one). The dual air tube has a couple scratches on the inside so it no longer seals. This causes all the air to go to the negative side and makes the fork useless. I have searched in vain for a replacement tube, but can't find one. Does anyone know if a ... Read More »

2001 i-Drive Race Rebuild

I must say - I'm extremely impressed once again with GT! Thanks Andy in the Tech Department for the hook up! On a whim I decided I was going to tear down my 2001 i-Drive Race this winter, paint it and rebuild it. I just had the rear shock rebuilt this summer by Luby at Dirtlabs (he's awesome!) ...
