Strengths: Great suspension design, flawless execution, build quality puts this bike in a class of its own.
Weaknesses: Provokes jealousy, not for xc race day and weight weenies.
Bottom Line:
This is the best bike I have ever ridden or owned. Its so much fun to ride, that at the end of your ride, you'll wish you had more time, or never got tired. The suspension design is the best. The build quality is amazing. Period. The XCE hooks up on loose climbs perfectly. It descends like its got 8 inches of travel in the rear. It is the bike that answers the question, Is it me, or the bike? With the XCE, if you can't ride it, its you.
The single pivot Santa Cruz doesn't even compare. I know, I rode one for two years before getting this bike.
If you ride this bike, you will never want anything else.

Strengths: This bike flat out Rocks!!! I've ridden Turner's for 4 year's now and I'm still blown away every time I go out. Last night, we went out for an after work jaunt at Whiting...You know...post work de-stress ride, so I haven't been in there since the rains, a few changes in the trail. The Turner soaks it up oh so good. When someone asks me to describe the difference between this and other bikes, I like to say, you can feel other bikes suspension work...But the Turner just makes the trail smoother. Rain ruts no problem. Quick transitions, no problem. Fastest bike out there. Funnest too. Customer for life am I.
Weaknesses: It makes you want to ride.... Wife/work issues.
Bottom Line:
This bike is the best. If you want to be convinced, ride one!!

Strengths: Impeccable attention to detail, built to be ridden harder than most can dream of, built by and designed by a legend, and I dare anyone to find another manufacturer on this website that has 5.00 ratings for all, that's right all, of their bikes. I have yet to hear or see anything in print that negatively criticizes this product or company in anyway shape or form. Period!!
Weaknesses: ummmmmm...nada
Bottom Line:
uhhhhh....wow! like all those that have written reviews before me its pretty damn hard to criticize this mechanical work of art...it climbs, it descends, it basically blows anything comparable away...no its not a dh bike or some insanely light cc deal, its the quintesential trail bike that can do everything incredibly well both going up and down. Another really cool thing about this company is that you can only get one of these beauties through your LBS, no mail order, no call for best price, only at your LBS!!!!!!!!!If anybody is reading this than you are probably like me, the kind of person who would consider only the best when shopping around....and trust me I looked ALL around...this is THE bike that will take you to a higher plane....enough of my meandering go and buy the friggin' thing and see for yourself what I and all the others that wrote something here are talking about!

Weaknesses: Stock Fox shock works great but is very heavy, upgraded to an Air Vanilla and dropped 1lb. Frame is a hair heavy, but built to last
Bottom Line:
Gotta follow up on my previous review with a long-term update. I've had this bike for about a year now and it still rides like new. The Fox Air Vanilla is probably due an overhaul but the pivots are like new. God bless grease ports! Friends have gone through pivots, frames, and other stuff, but my Turner is still going strong and the rear end is as stiff as the day I bought it. Definitely getting your money's worth here...

Strengths: The '01 XCE frame is the most refined 4-bar linkage frame available-bar none. Turner's frames are flawless in every aspect of their conception, construction and detail. Hilights include: Impeccable, intricate CNC machine work (the 1-piece bottom bracket junction, rear dropouts and other pieces),flawless welds, beefy headtube and seat tube gussets and overall excellent frame angles/geometry for either hard C.C.riding or slightly harder free riding and drops. You can choose either an air shock or coil. The XCE Frame is stone-cold reliable with hardly any maintenance involved and the pivots never loosen either. The rear end is perfectly strait and aligned, unlike some other 4-bar frames out there. Best Feature: TURNER'S CUSTOMER SERVICE IS EXCEPTIONAL-they treat you like family and go out of their way to meet your different individual needs. This company really loves bikes, and it shows in everything they do.
Weaknesses: Most consider the frame expensive, but compared to what- mass produced bikes that flex and wear out prematurely? Also, you may have to wait 4-5 months to get one. However, all the benefits of this bike far out weigh the intial cost and wait.If you love to ride a reliable, awesome frame, then money really is no object.
Bottom Line:
This is my second Turner frame.I absolutely love the bike, the people at Turner and the companies commitment to cutting edge, high-quality MTB frames. I am usually not brand loyal, but Turner is the only MTB company that I will ever deal with. Turner is one of the best frame makers on the planet. If you have one of Dave's frames,he will treat you exceedingly good and give you excellent deals on any stuff you may ever need from him. Dave and Michelle Turner made me a customer for life because their company builds superior frames, treats people with respect and go out of their way to do whatever it takes to meet your needs. This really makes a difference. Turner's frames have achieved legendary status and with good reason-his stuff is as close to perfection as possible.Forget all the other cheap knock-offs and flawed copies-they pale in comparision once you ride a Turner frame. Also, forget the cost folks -If you live to ride MTB and want a reliable, great handling and impeccably well-contructed 4-bar linkage and don't want any flex or frame problems when riding, THEN THIS IS THE BIKE FOR YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Strengths: Bar-none the finest trail bike ever designed. The geometry of this most refined of four-bar-linkage frames is perfect for both climbing and decending. Above all however is the relentless attention paid to detail. Each weld and linkage is perfectly hand-crafted wich attributes to the precision in wich the frame is constucted. Dave Turner has built the finest trail bike that is available to man. A countless number of companies have looked long and hard at his frame design in an attempt to acheive the same level of performace. However there remains no other suspension frame on the market that can not only stand the test of time but also afford it's rider the level of performance that this winner can. The XCE will continue to stand as the benchmark of full fuspension quality simply because the Turner team is dedicated to accomplishing just that. Absolutely no flex to be found. As the saying goes "Many will imitate, but none will duplicate."

Strengths: This is the finest full suspension bicycle on the planet. It climbs like a goat and is a strong descender. The construction is flawless. This is the second Turner I've owned. In the four years I have ridden a Turner I have looked at the rest of industry with disbelief. They still have not caught up to David Turner's 1993 design even though they regularly rip off his concepts and ideas. Specialized may own the Horst Link (FSR) patent but David Turner made it work!
Weaknesses: NONE. The changes that Turner made to the 2001 model are minor but significant. The rear end is stiffer, perfectly aligned and is fully active with out any biopacing or drive train suspension activation. The swing arm pivot moved up and forward slightly. This damped the rear end to pedalling a little more than before without compromising suspension activity.
Bottom Line:
The best bike money can buy and it is expensive. But when compared to what you get with other manufacturer's top bikes it is a bargain, simply because it is better and yet similarly priced. This bike does everything very well, it is the ultimate trail bike (to coin the phrase from the MTB press). The pivots are journal bearings as opposed to ball bearing but do not let that freak you out. They are well designed, sealed and light weight. I rode my first bike hard for 4 years and never replaced them. Keep them lubed with the grease fittings and they will stay tight laterally and free moving vertically. Suffice it to say I am totally stoked about this bike and recommend it to anyone who fits the profile of a hard riding trail rider.

Strengths: Flawless construction, active suspension, ZERO flex at 215 pounds, easy maintainance with grease ports.
Weaknesses: None whatsoever. An M1 will out-descend it and a hardtail will outrun it on a fireroad- but not by much in either case!
Bottom Line:
As good as it gets- the bike is bettr than I'll ever be! Climbs anything, tracks the gnarliest singletrack, descends faster than I have the cojones for! I'm going to try an XVert to better balance the 4" rear end.
Everyone who has tried this has been unanimous- the best cross-country, epic ride, do-it-all bike EVER. I never would have talked myself into a new one, but got a great deal through MTBR.COM (!) and haven't quit grinning yet...

Strengths: Great XC geometry for a 4" bike, best build quality you'll ever find, ...GREASE PORTS!!!!!, very consistent suspension
Weaknesses: It ain't cheap, gotta wait for one
Bottom Line:
Definite cure for upgrade-itis. Best handling long travel bike I've been on. Turner's attention to detail is outstanding. With the Air Vanilla R rear shock and a Z1 dropoff using flylight caps, it's an oustanding XC bike. I've owned a ton of full suspension bikes and ridden just about everything out there and Turner is the s**t. The only problem now is that there's nothing to upgrade to. Maybe and O2 as a second bike...
It's not a flashy bike, but it's built like a tank, and uses a proven and reliable rear end. Notice how a lot of the bike makers are moving back to Turner's rocker design...and for good reason. The grease ports should keep it going for a good long time. Everyone wants bearings these days, but the Turner is put together so well that when I removed the shock the rear end moved as smoothly as if it had bearings...and was in absolutely perfect alignment.
You get what you pay for. If you can spare the $$$ I strongly recomend this bike.

Strengths: Better than bike articles. Have had bike for 1 1/2 years..7 hours of single track riding a week. Superb handling, well-balanced, does-everything-well bike. Light and quite strong. No discernable flex or loss of power due to the suspension. Great climber and tracks well down steep descents. Greasable pivots last very well (since new) even with 7 months a year of wet weather. Climbing and descending excellent due to four-bar system. Absolutely superb service from Dave and Michelle Turner on warranty/service items. They sell replacement parts at cost to keep customers happy. Like bike so much, I bought one for my wife.
Weaknesses: I suppose price is a factor but if you want one of the best, it is worth it. Cost reasonable if you deal iwth Turner directly.
Bottom Line:
Would be hard pressed not to buy another..excellent for cross country rider who likes technical terrain...lots of logs, rough descents etc. Probably not the best for big-drop free-rider although Turner has a model for this sort of person.
Similar Products Used: I have ridden Marins, Rocky Mountain, Kona and GT full susp. All are very good but most have small negatives...ie. weight, poorer braking due to suspension lock-up etc. Rocky Mountains seem closest. The Turners seem good in all areas.
Bike Setup: Chris King hubs/headset. Mavic 517 ceramics, XTR Brakes. Race Face cranks and rings. XTR cassett. Riser bar and short stem. 747 peddles.

Weaknesses: cost.............
Bottom Line:
this bike is as good as the mags say that it is I am a heavy guy 220 on a good day and I ride around 35 miles a week off road in austin texas which is pretty rough and I haven't had any problems with the frame at all !! It has very little flex and requires very little maint.if you are looking for a great bike that is going to stay together for a long time take a ride on one ,and you will be happy you did .even though the price is high its worth it ,like the saying goes you get what you pay for .
