Favorite Trail:Thieves Forest
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $1700.00
Purchased At:Simon's Bicycle
Strengths:Wow, I have had this bike for 4 years of tough riding and all I have replaced is one front rim. (that was due to my stupidity).
Weaknesses:Nothing at all.
Similar Products Used:Specialized Rockhopper
Bike Setup:My bike is bone stock except the new rim with 12gauge spokes.
Bottom Line:This bike is nothing short of stellar. It has held up to every bit of abuse I have thrown at it. I bought this bike when I started getting serious, so, I dabbled in lots of different types of riding, Freeride,Cross-Country,and Urban.(those were before I knew that there were different bikes for different things). If you want a worthy XC bike don't hesitate to buy this.

Favorite Trail:The one I'm riding
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $1900.00
Purchased At:Bike Empire in Poway CA
Strengths:Suspension, quality of build, great paint job
Weaknesses:Um, I'm trying to think of one. I guess if you're really picky, you could complain about the stock saddle.
Similar Products Used:I've owned and/or ridden many other mtn bikes, nothing quite like this bike.
Bike Setup:Mostly stock including Marzocchi Z2 Atom Sport Air fork, Fox Float R shock, LX/XT drivetrain, Mavic X221 rims. I replaced the Shimano LX brake levers with Avid 2.0L's (great improvement) and the Shimano LX brakes with Avid Arch Rivals.
Bottom Line:If you're looking for a used bike in this category, get yourself a 2001 "Element". This is the best full suspension bike design, for all all round riding, that I have ridden. It's a great climber (very little suspension bob) and it rocks on the downhills. I wouldn't recommend it for hard core "freeriding", but anything less than that is no sweat for this bike. It's excellent in XC conditions (I don't know about racing) and on "epic" rides. The Marzocchi Z2 Atom Sport air fork works great on this bike, especially for the riding that I most often do (steep, technical uphill & downhill with lots of rocks). The 2002 "Element" has been somewhat upgraded, but it is pretty much the same as the 2001. If you would like to save a little $ but would like to have a mtn bike similar to the 2001 "Element", you might consider a 2002 Rocky Mountain "Carve".

Favorite Trail:wedekind/fallcreek/mima cap forest
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $1350.00
Purchased At:simon's, vancouver bc
Strengths:Frame design, fit and finish. Great value for the money.
Weaknesses:Replace the saddle as others have said. Replace the tires.
Similar Products Used:Cannondale Jekyl, Specialized FSR Enduro.
Bike Setup:Stock except installed Mythos xc tires, Bontrager Race Day gel saddle, and Cane Creek head set.
Bottom Line:I have ridden hardtails for years. If you do too, this bike will improve your xc riding pleasure as much as shaped skis boosted your skiing enjoyment. Simon's in Vancouver let me test ride the bike in Stanley Park and I was sold after the first hour. I am a roadie who rides in Cap Forest mostly in the wetter months. I have yet to test the Element Race in the muddy conditions. I have riddden the bike about ten times in the month since buying. Every time I ride it I think to myself, this keeps getting better. Its not as light as a chichi titanium googah, but for the bucks the Element is a great cross country steed.

Date Reviewed: September 13, 2001
Favorite Trail:KANANASKIS COUNTY
Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $1800.00
Purchased At:THE BIKE SHOP CALGARY
Strengths:EXCELLENT EASTON ULTRALITE FRAME, GOOD COMPONENT SELECTION, GREAT PAINT JOB, TUNABLE SUSPENSION, 28 POUNDS.
Weaknesses:ROCK HARD SADDLE,AND THE WHEEL RIMS COULD HAVE BEEN STRONGER(IN ALL FAIRNESS, A 150LB RIDER SHOULD HAVE NO COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE WHEELS), MAXXIS HARDRIVE 2.1 ON REAR LOSES GRIP TOO EASILY ON CLIMBS.
Similar Products Used:NOTHING EVEN CLOSE.
Bike Setup:STANDARD SETUP WHEN PURCHASED, Z2 ATOM AIR, WHEELTECH WHEELS, FOX AIR WITH REBOUND,MAXXIS HARD DRIVE TYRES, RACE FACE PRODIGY, LX/XT,
Bottom Line:HAVING NEVER RIDDEN A BIKE WITH ANY SUSPENSION, A RISER BAR OR CLIPLESS PEDALS BEFORE, RIDING THE ELEMENT WAS A BIT OF A CHALLENGE. I COULD NOT FIND THE RIGHT COMBINATION OF SEAT POSITION AND SUSPENSION SETTING. IT SEEMED THAT WHEN MY FEET WERE JUST TOUCHING THE GROUND, THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF SAG IN THE SUSPENSION LEFT ME IN A BENT LEG POSITION THAT ROBBED ME OF LEG POWER. NOW THAT I HAVE A FEW HUNDRED MILES OF TECHNICAL CLIMBING AND DECENDING BEHIND ME, THIS BIKE REALLY DOES HAVE A SWEET SPOT THAT MAKES RIDING IT PURE ENJOYMENT. AT 195 POUNDS AND 6 FT TALL, I HAVE THE 20.5" FRAME, AND GENERALLY PUT 190 POUNDS IN THE REAR, AND 20 IN THE FRONT. IT GOES DECEPTIVELY FAST ON ROLLING TERRAIN,AND THE SMALL AMOUNT OF BOUNCE I GET WHILE CLIMBING IS OF NO CONSEQUENCE, ESPECIALLY IF YOU ADJUST THE REBOUND TO MATCH CONDITIONS. CLIMBING IN THE SADDLE IS AMAZING AND THIS BIKE HAS THE ABILITY TO GO DOWNHILL A LOT FASTER THAN MY CURRENT RIDING ABILITIES ARE CAPABLE OF, SO WHEN I TOOK A DIVE OVER THE HANDLEBARS ON A FAST ROCKY DESCENT, THE SEAT RIPPED RIGHT OFF ITS RAILS, AND THE REAR WHEEL BENT BEYOND REPAIR, SO I REPLACED IT WITH AN EXTRA STRONG MAVIC DOWNHILL RIM AND SPOKES. AS FOR THAT FRAME, WELL, THATS THE MAIN REASON I BOUGHT THE ELEMENT IN FIRST PLACE. THE SCRAM 7 BRAKES ARE REALLY EFFECTIVE, BUT I WILL PROBABLY PUT SOME MECHANICAL DISCS BRAKES ON IT, JUST SO I CAN RIDE IN THE SNOW. I HEARD A LOT OF DISCUSSION ABOUT BUSHINGS VERSUS BEARINGS, AND CONCLUDED THAT BUSHINGS WORK JUST FINE WHEN YOU ADD A DROP OF LUBRICANT, AND ARE INEXPENSIVE AND EASY TO REPLACE. THE GEAR SHIFTING WORKS FLAWLESSLY, AND THE Z2 HAS A BUTTERY SMOOTH ACTION THAT TAKES THE HITS REALLY WELL. THIS BIKE JUST BEGS TO BE RIDDEN HARD, I THOUGHT THAT I COULD DESCRIBE RIDING IT IN SUBJECTIVE TERMS, BUT I CAN'T,IT JUST FEELS RIGHT.

THERE ARE A LOT OF LIGHTER BIKES AVAILABLE, BUT FOR A RIDER WHO IS NOT OBSESSED WITH GRAM COUNTING AND NEEDS THE ASSURANCE THAT THE FRAME WILL BE STRONG ENOUGH FOR CROSS COUNTRY RIDING, THEN THE ELEMENT IS A GREAT CHOICE. THE 3.5" OF TRAVEL AT EACH END MEANS THAT GRAVITY RIDERS NEED TO LOOK ELSEWHERE.

IF YOU ARE A WELL OVER 40 GUY LIKE ME LOOKING FOR A NEW BIKE, DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON A BONE JARRING HARDTAIL, TREAT YOURSELF TO AN ELEMENT, AND DISCOVER NEW RIDING CHALLENGES ON A BIKE THAT DELIVERS SOLID PERFORMANCE AND INSTILLS A PASSION TO IMPROVE YOUR ABILITIES.

Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $1700.00
Purchased At:River Rat Mtn. Bikes
Strengths:Climbing, frame quality & craftmanship, component selection
Weaknesses:Decal durability
Similar Products Used:Tested Gary Fisher Sugar 4, Kona Mokomoko
Bike Setup:Stock components chosen by Rocky Mtn
Bottom Line:This is my first full-suspension bike, and I am EXTREMELY happy with the purchase. Of the 2 other bikes tested, for the price and quality of bike you get for the money, nothing even comes close to the Rocky. The bike climbs very well and the frame design minimizes any rear wheel bob. Tight, twisty singletrack is an absolute blast to ride with this bike. It carves and tracks on line and is very stable in the corners. I find the Maxxis tires to work well, especially in hardpack conditions. The LX shifters have performed flawlessly and are very smooth. As this was my first full suspension bike it required an adjustment in my riding style and feel on a FS rig. Once you adjust, you won't want to get off! If you buy this bike, you won't be able to wipe the grin off your face.

* - Jennifer Gostage at River Rat Mtn. Bikes was a big help in selecting this bike. Her knowledge and after the sale service has been second to none!

Submitted by PHUN a Cross Country Rider from Fort Collins, CO
Date Reviewed: August 29, 2001
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Purchased At:LBS- Lee's Cyclery
Strengths:Smooth on the downhills; no major sacrcifice in climbing. Good combination of light weight and great performance.
Weaknesses:None yet seen. I am not real happy with Hutchinson Python tires I put on it, and will probably go back to Mythos if I don't figure them out soon.
Similar Products Used:Tested Ventana El Saltamonte, SC Superlight, Trek Fuel, GT I-drive, Giant NTS.
Bike Setup:Built up the Element TSC Frame: Manitou Mars ELite, XT/XTR drive train; Avid Mech. Disc brakes; Mavic 517 w/XT disc hubs.
Bottom Line:This is my first full suspension (replacing a Stumpjumper) and I spent a lot of time before picking the Rocky. I have no regrets. A good FS-XC bike is like fat skiis...suddenly you can ride sections you couldn't ride, and ride faster. It is a huge difference on the downhills.
I don't know all the technical issues on FS designs, but I like that this bike looks a lot like my hardtail when I sit on it, no weird tubes, etc. The folks at Rocky know how to build great downhill bikes and this seems to have come over nicely to their XC designs.
The fit and finish on this frame is great. I am really glad the local bike shop...Lee's, is carrying these bikes now.
Even though this bike was expensive, by building it to my spec I came in under the price for the Rocky spec. Major difference was not going tubeless and going for disc brakes. So I got just what I wanted, which I think is a good value. And frankly, it is Shimano that gets a big chunk of the money when you build a bike anyway...Rocky can't help that!

Favorite Trail:King's Castle
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $1850.00
Purchased At:Collin's Cycle, Eugene
Strengths:Canadian built, disc ready, bassboat paint job, efficient 3-D link squish
Weaknesses:weight- 30lb, but thats an XL bike with a bunch of heavy s* like pump, seatbag, disc brakes. Plus the seat was hard as a rock
Similar Products Used:tested: santa cruz superlight, spec. enduro
Bike Setup:RaceFace headset and various stock metal, 'zocchi Z-2 fork, magura louise dics (check Priceline sale)
Bottom Line:Spent a lot of time on mtbr and in shops testriding, and finally settled on the Element. Not one single bit dissappointed. This bike is f*ing awesome. Cleans the uphill way better than my steel hardtail, bombs away on the down. Very well balanced and precise. The 3-D link rear suspension is dialed: efficient as soon as you figure out how to pedal right, plenty of squish for me, and is still very torsionally stiff. Looks sweet too, with the CNC'd swingarm. Paint job is about the coolest thing ever to be put on a bike; it has so many colors in it.

For those concerned about the weight, frame weight is barely more than the superlight. Bike is incredibly strong, can take anything you throw at it (and it at). I am 6'1' but need the biggest bike they make, a 20.5'. Make sure you check and tighten the suspension pivots regularly.
TIP::: if the bike is making a creaking, metal-on-metal sound, it is most likely the replaceable hanger. Rocky paints it on, stupid considering all of the detail they put into the frames, like facing the head tube. Sand off any corrosion and grease the heck out of it, and no more creaking like an old man.

Marzocchi Z-2 air fork is super plush, and balances nicely with the Fox float R shock. No need for lockout on this rig, susp movement helps wheels stick to bumpy uphills.

I love the RaceFace parts that the bike is literally draped with, but I've been having a bit of trouble with the headset. It doesn't seem to be as smooth as it should be. This could have been my fault, since I assembled the bike, but I will see if I can fix it.

The Louise disc brakes rule, I found a screamin deal on priceline on a 2000 set and couldn't pass it up. Set up and adjustment is a breeze, you only need a 5mil allen wrench.
TIP::: if your front disc brake squeals and you have a marzocchi fork w/ hollow lowers, it is not the brake squeaking, it is the fork resonating. Stick an old handlebar grip in there to shut it up. You can see I am trying to soundproof my bike, so I can sneak up all those dudes (and dudettes, props to all the female riders out there) that made the mistake of buying some other bike. I also wrapped a tube around my driveside chainstay to dampen chain slap.

Bottom Line: This bike is king. 'Nuff said. Five chili's all around.
Now get off your a* and ride!!!!

Purchased At:Poison Spider Bikes
Strengths:Clearance, great price, adjustability, ease of maintance
Weaknesses:poorly spec'd last year, Rear swing arm cracks with use of disc brake!!! be very careful if you RIDE!
Bike Setup:Z1, fat rubber, discs
Bottom Line:I love the bike but the cracking swingarm makes for serious soil sampiling! Both times it broke with out any warning. They have said that it has been improved for the coming model year, I hope so for the sake of your collar bone. They are awesome about replacement, but if your big or a freeride junkie, avoid the weight savings

Favorite Trail:Houffalize (B) and Valkenburg (NL)
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $2700.00
Purchased At:Rob Akkermans
Strengths:Rides well, reasonably light, good components and frame
Weaknesses:I added discs (deore) and changed the handle bar to a straight one (strange is not an option given that it is sold as a cross country bike). Given the price it would had been nicer to have it already with the discs, as this added approx 350USD to the bill.
Similar Products Used:Jeckill
Bike Setup:Standard set up with straight handle bar and added deore discs
Bottom Line:My first full suspended, to be used mainly for cross country.

Rides well. Next month I am on vacation in the south of France, at les dues alps and will put it to the test, including downhill. One track runs for 20K, starting at 3600m all the way down to the valley.

I would certainly recommended for someone who wants a good bike with OK components. Given the excellent frame you can always update the lot to XT/XTR after a while (if you are that kind of person)

Favorite Trail:Rainbow Valley
Duration Product Used:3 months
Purchased At:River Valley Cycle and Snowboard
Strengths:Super high quality construction and welds. Hand-built wheels and a SUPERB paint job.
Weaknesses:Front end bops around on seated technical climbs. Stock seat was pretty hard on the keester but I'm used to it now. Decals need a clear-coat!
Similar Products Used:Kona Mokomoko, Specialized FSR XC Comp, Jamis Dakar Comp, Cannondale Jekyl
Bike Setup:Element Race in Aztec Blue and Ed Red, Z2 Atom Sport Air, Fox Float R, Hayes HMX-1 mechanical disc on the front. LX/XT drivetrain, Mavic X221 rims with Maxxis Hard Drive 2.1 tires, RaceFace Cranks...Basically stock except for the Hayes up front and a Chris King Headset
Bottom Line:I spent way too much time fretting over which bike I should buy. I narrowed it down to the Kona and the Rocky very quickly but from there it got tough. I finally had a real good day of testing where both bikes were set up to my style and weight and the decision came fairly quickly. The Rocky just suited me better and I liked the Marzocchi fork WAY better than the Sid XC on the Kona. Disc ready hubs on the Rocky also swayed my decision. That said, the Kona is a beautiful bike too.

If any of you out there are considering the Element Race as your next mount, you can't go wrong. This bike has me hooked on challenging the most difficult, techy trails out there. This bike climbs very well. You have to get over the front end on seated climbs as the front end will bop up on you making line selection a little difficult. When you get out of the saddle and climb the steep, snotty stuff, this bike really shines! Downhills are a riot as this bike is nimble but very stable at speed. It makes you want to ride aggressively.

The 3-D link suspension design has been around for several years on the Rocky's and they really have a good thing going. This bike feels like a hardtail on the road or smooth trails. Don't worry about "bob" or being slowed by the suspension. This is one fast bike. I weigh 195 so I pump the Fox Float R up to 200 for the trails and up to 220 if I'm doing a long road ride. No need for a lockout with this design, unless you are Mr. Olympic Hopeful who'll climb for forty miles at a time.

If anyone wants to discuss this bike (or the ones I tested) with me send an email to rwatts@ualberta.ca

I'll be happy to give more detail or answer questions.

Fellow Albertans, if you are bike shopping, you absolutley owe it to yourself to go see Mark Chambers and company at River Valley Cycle and Snowboards. This is undoubtedly the finest bike shop in Edmonton.

Favorite Trail:anywhere offroad with no horse or dog poo
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Purchased At:The Bike Shop
Strengths:Light, soft and it looks good
Weaknesses:Maxxis Hard Drive tires are pure crap! Doesn't climb like my old RM hardtail. The front end is so light it keeps coming off the ground, I guess that I have my riding to blame for that though.
Similar Products Used:Never had a fancy FS bike before
Bike Setup:9.0 halfpipes, 9.0 levers and brakes, 140 mm Race Face stem
Bottom Line:Rocky Mountain doesn't make a bad bike. If it wasn't for the awfull Maxxis tires this bike would be my favourite thing in the world. However, on my first ride I got 3 flat tires. I think The Bike Shop gave me bunk tubes when they put the bike together though, but the tires are no help either. I am not used to the weight difference between this bike and my old one. The new Bombers are so light compared to Quadra 21's that I can't keep the front on the ground while I am in the saddle. I love the rear shock, the saddle is not too bad, you just gotta play with its position, the fork is so much of an improvement over what I used to have, the disc ready hubs are such a great idea, and all the Race Face makes this one hell of a bike.
Only four chilis value cause buying a bike in Canada is expensive. RM looses marks for the

Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $2200.00

Strengths:Great climber, shocks absorbs everything while flying downhill.
Weaknesses:Seat is uncomfortable and having problems with the Magura Clara disc brakes that I had put on instead of the stock v-brakes.
Similar Products Used:Santa Cruz Superlight
Bike Setup:Element Race with LX/XT derailleurs, RaceFace cranks, Fox Float R rear shock, Marzocchi front shock added Magura Clara disc brakes
Bottom Line:Bottom line so far for 30 days is: fantastic bike, climbs like my Klein hardtail(almost) and descends like a champ. Little heavier than what I'm used to, but more than makes up for it with its performance. The saddle is very uncomfortable and will switch my Klein's Selle Italia Trans Am Flite over to it. Also having problems with the Magura Clara disc brakes, but when its working-its top notch. Only Rocky Mountains from now on.

Strengths:Great frame and paint, good quality shifters and brakes, light disc ready wheels.
Weaknesses:The seat was a tad hard.
Similar Products Used:Gary Fisher Sugar 3, various Specialized models
Bike Setup:Stock except I swapped the seat for a Serfas RX and some wellgo pedals.
Bottom Line:This is one great double boinger! I took it out for its first test yesterday and had a great ride. The bike climbs like a goat. I kept waiting for wheel spin on some uphills but it didn't happen. The shock and frame keep the rear wheel on the ground. I love the color of the frame! On the showroom floor it looks kind of dull black but get some sunlight on it and it glows like a metalflake bassboat. Once the shocks were adjusted for my weight and the shifters and brakes moved a little, it fit like a glove and performed flawlessly. I am really pleased with this bike. Now I can't blame my mount for anything!
