Submitted by Nick a Weekend Warrior from Santa Monica, CA
Date Reviewed: November 27, 2002
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $325.00
Purchased At:online/used
Strengths:Versatile, light, strong, beautiful
Weaknesses:none so far
Similar Products Used:FSR Extreme Ground Control, Cheeta Prowler
Bike Setup:Marzocchi DJ2, RynoLites, Margura Louise, Kore Freeride Bars, Kore B52 Stem, Chris King Headset, Raceface Prodigy cranks & BB, SRAM shifting
Bottom Line:This bike is amazing! What really impresses me is the stability at high speed. It holds a line with such sureness! It outdoes my downhill rig. I'm not sure how or why, but I can almost let the brakes go on steep descents. I'm no speed freak, but I've found I enjoy going about 40mph over some steep, rocky, treacherous terrain. It hangs like a magnet. Furthermore, it jumps and drops nimbly. Climbing was hard at first till I learned to dial the rebound to the slowest position. Now it climbs as good as my hardtail. Best of all, with a straigh, non-interrupted seat post tube, I can raise the seat way up for the climp and drop it for the descent. This is the reason I went for this frame. Now I have the best of both worlds. If you like freeriding and want to be able to climb, get this bike. It will blow you away.

Favorite Trail:Four Horsemen
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $1200.00
Purchased At:Internet
Strengths:Nice for big drops. On the fly adjustable rear travel. Easy to handle.
Weaknesses:Rear swingarm flexes a lot if you land a drop just a little bit wrong. Short headtube (3.5inch) doesn't look like it could handle much more than a 5 inch fork.
Similar Products Used:RM DH Race,Norco XCS 2,Giant DS1
Bike Setup:16.5inch frame,Z3's,Rhynolites,LX V brakes.
Bottom Line:Awesome bike for freeride and urban. Easy to bunnyhop on too. I'm going to sell it; only because all my friends are riding hardtails now.

Purchased At:Bikesmith
Strengths:Great bike for urban riding, and freeriding. It has a fairly short wheelbase and responds quickly. It can handle fairly large drops.
Weaknesses:The rear chatters a bit on the washboard, and isn't as stiff as it could be.
Similar Products Used:None
Bike Setup:Bought stock, Changed everything. XT drivetrain, Azonic bars and stem, Hope disks, Doublewides, Intense tires, Titec Bezerker, Hope bigun hubs, RF lp cranks, Monster-T
Bottom Line:A nice bike for messing around. Not great for pure DH or Huge drops but its fun for a great price.

Strengths:rock hard front end....canadian....cheep....light for the travel....
Weaknesses:well my rear disc snapped the dropout and the disc mount!!! this not only annoyed me but Rocky did nothing about it! and i cant seem to get a new rear end the company just isn't big enough oh and no way near enough tire clearence at back
Bike Setup:xtr tiogas blah blah blah
Bottom Line:this bike kicks it can also handle big stuff well (considering it uses an old URT design) looks nice. but it uses a dodgy removable disc mount (well mine does) and it brakes and it also brakes the frame so watch out!

Date Reviewed: March 27, 2001
Favorite Trail:N. Vietnam, Arcadia, Gilbert Hills
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $1650.00
Purchased At:Dedham Bike
Strengths:Front Fork, Stability, High pivot that stays out of the wet slop of the north east.
Weaknesses:Seat Post...replaced with a Thompson Elite, Narrow saddle
Similar Products Used:Rocky Mountain Element,
Bike Setup:Stock, 2000
Bottom Line:I am a cross country rider looking to play a little more. Was not sure how I would like a longer travel free ride bike that rolled in at 31.5 lbs. Right out of the gate the bike made me feel more confident in my downhill and rock hopping ability. Extremely stable on rocky decents. Not a bad climber for 30+ lbs if you stay seated. Cannot find any fault with the bike so far. It just make me want to go riding all the time and quit my job! I have been very happy with Rocky Mountain as a bike company as I also own a RM Element Race for 3 plus years...been riding for 10+ yrs.

Strengths:2001 Rocky Pipeline
Great Frame, Adjustable Travel (geometery), Unbeleivable stability on the nasties terrain. Speced with Hayes and Race face, what could be better
Weaknesses:Tire are weak, Maxxis Mobster 2.1
and,the saddle sucks
Similar Products Used:Specialized FSR, 2000 Pipeline
Bike Setup:Shimano 747 pedals, Tioga Factory DH 2.3 front, Kujo 2.35 rear
Bottom Line:No brainer, Out of the box it is an amazing rig, change the tires and the seat and you are ready to hit some hard DH sh_t. I ride urban assault and this bike is great for it. Big drops, stair drops, it takes it all in stride. Can't wait for the snow to melt and start ripping some big DH runs. Oh, yeah change the travel setting and get ready for an XC epic (30lbs is a bit much for XC but you will love the Downhills). I don't think there is a more versatile bike on the market.

Favorite Trail:Whitetail ski mountain
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Strengths:Solid Frame, Marzocchi Fork (even at the low end these blow others away), rear shock, Race Face cranks, Sun Ryno lite rims
Weaknesses:SRAM grip shifts they are nice for some mild cross country rides but SUCK for drops. Handlebars.
Similar Products Used:Kona Manomano
Bike Setup:Stock except for a new set of Profile bars, my banged up flat pedals, and Maxxis high Roller tires 2.5's front + rear
Bottom Line:I searched long and hard for a solid bike for freeriding and downhilling. I had it narrowed to the Kona Stinky group and then came across the Pipeline. The price was right and the mix of parts was decent where it counted. Like other posters I must take issue with the the stated rear travel limit of 6". I might believe something short of 5".

The rear QR adjustment on the travel is a plus for XC rides with the wife. This bike tracks real nice over some pretty rough stuff. It handles very well. You only need turn the front wheel a bit to redirect the bike. The unified rear triangle design is quite nice. It allows the back to have a big fat pivot, which in turn makes rear flex non-existent. The back feels plush over the big stuff and I don't feel a need for more travel. The back did manage to fit a 2.5 tire, but it is tight and probably the max size you want back there.

I am very happy with this bike so far. Now I just need to learn the bigger drops and jumps. Buy this bike if you want something that can handle tough riding, but don't want a downhill machine. If you don't mind riding up on 31-33 lbs, which ain't bad on this bike, you will enjoy the ride down. 4 Chilis across the board --it would get a five if spec'd with disk brakes.

Favorite Trail:all
Duration Product Used:3 months
Strengths:Its rocky mountain
Its canadian
Weaknesses:replace all the rocky mountain parts, very weak!!!
needs a better front suspension
it DOESNT GIVE 6 INCHES IN THE BACK, THATS WHY RM MADE THE RM6!!!!!!!!!!
Similar Products Used:kona stinky and element race
Bike Setup:Z3 qr20(soon a Z1 qr20) Xtr ,xt and race face components.
Bottom Line:This bike just cant handle extreme free riding. first of all it doesnt have enough travel on the back (only like 4 or something). The parts are too weak for that stuff. If you want a good rocky mountain free ride bike, look at the reaper and rm6, those bikes can handle the BIG STUFF.

Strengths:A lot of travel, will handle anything. It's a Rocky.
Weaknesses:NONE.
Similar Products Used:Trek VRX, Element Race
Bike Setup:All race face and XTR. Z-1 QR-20.
Bottom Line:This bike is for everyone. You can adjust the amount of travel from 4 to 6 inches. At 4 it is stiff in the rear and good for XC and at 6 it is good for downhill and the nutty stuff free riders like to do. Dropping off 5 footers the rear soaks it all up and you don't feel a thing.

Bottom Line:The Strenghths:
This bike can taking a beating. Ive done 8 foot drops street riding in Chicago. I have Jumped Bmx Jumps and everythng with is and have not yet broke the hell out of it like all the rest of my bikes.
The components on the bike are kickin @$$. Sram 9.0 stuff for 2000 is beefy and light. And they look as good as my friends sister (she is pretty hot). The Raceface Cranks have almost not flex at all and the sprockets shift like a dream. Oh an let me tell you about the Forks. THEY ARE CRAZY. The Marzocchi Z3 QR 20 are insane. The Axle are so beefy and give me confidence in doing huge drops. I have bottomed out on these forks many times and I have not busted any "O" rings like I have on my Rock Shox Judy. The 140mm of travel soaks up everything. The rear shock is just as good.

The Weaknesses. I ordered the bike 4 months befor I bought it. I heard That Rocky has only three welders (but that is probably just hear say). The bottom bracket is a piece of crap. They used a UN52, so i have to buy a not piece of crap one like a RF Taperlock.

All in all this bike is awesome. This bike eats every othe bike ofr breakfast. I can beat the hell out of it and it just begs for more. 8 Footers and like curbs to this machine. Do yourself a favor and buy this bike (no I dont work for Rocky)

I give this Bike 5 flaming Treks

Bike Setup:Drop-off, Formula hyd. disks, Raceface cranks, Mavic D321, xtr + xt drive train...
Bottom Line:this bike kicks so much ass.

it soaks up all the bumps and drops, from 1 1/2 footers to, i don't usually brag but, i did a 8 1/2 footer today! and in case you don't believe me it was the three stunt wonder drop. anyway the bike was so smooth it was awesome. if you want to buy this bike do it it's the best dualie out there in the freeride category. i love my bike. and you know what else is cool about this bike? it gives you more confidence, i've owned this bike for a month a nd a bit and i'm doing big drops and taking sick lines i would never have been able to do on my old bike, can you imagine what a rider could do if they rode it for a few months?! well, keep riding and happy trails.

Strengths:-Sweet spot suspension
-Canadian
-Wade rode it
Weaknesses:-Sram crap
Similar Products Used:Rm 6, VPs-3, VPs-1, cove G-spot
Bike Setup:Stock
Bottom Line:This bike can do almost anything that a recreational rider would want to do. The Floating drive train is not the best but rocky got it in a position they call the sweet spot. This makes the suspension very active. The adjustable trave witha quick release is realy nice. It can climb because of its light weight(for a free ride bike(31 lbs)). I think that this is the bike that i am goign to get but i will switch to Xt drive-train and z1 Qr 20's and i would also put some hayes, magura, or the new XT discs on it.

Strengths:-great idea with the adjustable rear
-its canadian, therefore its godlike
- really fast, handles great
Weaknesses:- Canadian bikes don't have weaknesses.
Similar Products Used:just about everything. Kona, Specialized, DBR, GT, schwinn, but no treks or gary fisher cuz they are lame
Bike Setup:stock, but gonna switch the stem, and bar to syncros. gonna change the pedals one of these days to good shimano ones. Thats pretty much it
Bottom Line:I love this bike. It can do so much. This bike is super responsive, just point it where you want it to go. Rocks, roots, mud, drops, jump, this thing can do it all.I love the suspension design and the way that yu can lock out the rear end for climbing. This was definately a good choice for me.Definately give this one five burning treks.

Favorite Trail:Mackenzie cruise ( Canada)
Duration Product Used:3 months
Strengths:Strong frame. no interupted seat post tube. Good tires, suspension, and derailuer
Weaknesses:Rocky mountain components ie. pedals, stem, saddle,
grip shift is huge! And the brake levers are too far out. You need gorilla size hands to use comfortably. Hard to shift and brake at the same time. Uncomfortable saddle.
Similar Products Used:Huh?
Bike Setup:added shimano 636 pedals, comfy nashbar saddle, and Roox riser bar
Bottom Line:Marzocchi fork is sort of spongy. Need to downtune to 4" of travel. REplace all the cheap rocky mountain components with race face! Could do without the shifters and brake levers too. Otherwise great price for the frame and suspension that it has. It will ride through pretty much anything although weak on the uphill. This bike is ideally a " freeride trail bike"
