a Downhiller
from Tumut, NSW, AustraliaDate Reviewed: May 8, 2002
Strengths: HAYES Hydraulic Disc brakes, Adjustable "Front Porch" Headtube, Psylo SL's, XTR rear derailleur, XT cranks and XT splined BBWeaknesses: RockShox SID adjust rear shock - a good shock for its intended use, 3.5 inches of TRUE travel (the bike shop measured it up and all)
WTB LaserDisc Rims - again, not bad for their intended use but i bent them from jumping and general freeride
WTB Seat - Hard and narrow
LX F.Derailleur - Smooth Shifting didnt last long (even with adjustment)Bottom Line: First Up, im not really a Downhiller despite the fact i ma y go to the odd race or 2, and i wouldnt really say weekend warrior, so i just put "downhiller".
Bottom Line - I wouldnt pay full retail price for this bike as i bought it for about $1000 AUD ($500 US) cheaper than retail. I see my bike as originally being a good quality upgrade platform. Any cross country riders that would like to bomb down the downhills faster than your ultralite XC mates - this is the go (and if u have a bit more cash to burn). All the components (stock) are good quality and light too - adjustable SID r.shock, PsyloSL, XTR derailleur.
Right now i think my bike is a sweet setup with pretty much the exact components i want for a freeride bike - 5 inch front and 5.5" rear travel, hydro brakes, twin clicker shock, big burly rims and tyres, chaindevice and bar/stem combo. This bike suits me and my riding a lot better than any stock bike out there would.
Its also cool to turn up to a race or event and be about the only guy on a half/decent newer model Mongoose, so i can hang about with guys on Giant AC's and KONA Stinky's and chuck on the whole "individual" act.

a Weekend Warrior
from californiaDate Reviewed: June 22, 2001
Strengths: the lockout, the four bar rear shock and definetley the gadget you can switch the headtubes angleWeaknesses: the rear shock only has four inches of travel,if they had made it five then i would have been able to run my psylo on five inches tooBottom Line: This Is a great bike, Even the weak point i said isnt that big of a deal because four inches of travel is still alot.there is one ting i didnt say though and that was that if your really weight concious you may not like this bike considering the fact that it weighs 28.5 pounds
