This is a bike with very a strong frame. Very agile. I had been using it nearly 3 years now. Offering a very comfortable ride - downhill, uphill or on rough terrain.
Weaknesses:
The Crank is not strong enough. Rims a bit heavy and the front suspension needs to be upgraded.
Similar Products Used:
Would stick to this bike for some time.
Bike Setup:
Upgrade to the following : Rock Shox Judy XC, Mavic X221 rims, Selle Italia saddle and of course, the STX-RC crank to a Ritchey Comp. The rest of the stuff that came along with the bike is still OK.
Bottom Line:
This is a great and fairly priced bike. At abt $600, and if you are able to upgrade some of the components, you would have a bike with great performance that can easily outperform the other more expensive ones.

Neuman frame is solid, has some "bob" on uphill climbing but not as much as I would thought on a Mongoose. Still this aint no Santa Cruz Bullitt or Specialized Epic. Componant mix is on par with most of this price range. As mentioned by others: STX RC crank must go!
Weaknesses:
Front fork--Manitou's worst boinger next to their Magnum series. Its like having a Jett or Judy TT. Also, you can forget putting on a bottle cage unless you like getting mud or dust all over the bottle, since the only place to put one on is below the bottom tube frame.
Similar Products Used:

Bottom Line:
Heavy, ugly framed bike with a brand stamped on it everyone who knows anything about mountain bikes stays away from. Nevertheless a good bike with the same warrantee everyone else gives out. I never had trouble with the brand, I own a SX4.3 as well. Its a good value and as a bike sitting in the shop for 2 yrs, It was a steal at this price especially with the disc upgrade. I call it a "freeride" bike--its too heavy for XC racing, but only gives a 4" travel for downhills. Disc brakes and the new rims and the 2.35 Maxxis tires really weigh it down. I dont suggest this upgrade if you like to climb steep switchbacks.

Room for upgrading despite other idiotic reviews. If someone truly used the bike... it is agile, quick and very durable. Frame quality is great and very durable.

Similar Products Used:

Bottom Line:
I must admit that Mongoose has done a great injustice to their reputation by selling junk in Kmart and Walmart. Bad PR... but I hear Specialized just doofed there dealers in 2001... so their reps are on the line, too.
Anyhow, I was fortunate enough that Dick's Sporting Goods in Cincinnati Ohio luckily had two bikes in stock in 1999 (Pro Series NX 8.1) on sale. I am one of two lucky owners of the NX 8.1. I started mountain biking at age 28 in 1999 and had my first race in the fall of Fall 2000. I am considering some races in the summer of 2001. I will never be a NORBA racer but I love to ride off-road!!!
As I mentioned, the bike is worthy of upgrading and I have done so in a period of 2 years. My initial purchase of the bike and upgrades total approx. $2500 to $2800. What the average person does not understand is that most, if not all, bike makers only make the frame... all other components are made by others. The Mongoose frame is SOLID and the rear suspension is very firm in climbs... even for a full-suspension. I'll challenge anyone on the Harbin Park climbs that I can outperform a hardtail on "THE" climb.
The bike is into its 3rd season and is still kikin' butt! I am still proud to have my mongoose and most riders can't believe that they see one that has all da trimmins'!
My advise to novice riders... don't buy becuz of the hype (Bike Brands come and go)... and also do yourself a favor by going to a bike shop to get a quality mountain bike you can grow into... I happened to be fortunate with my purchase and also had lots of advise from expert riders that I have met over the years.

it is alright at climbing, doesn't bob much, decends real good, tracks real good, stays on the ground. very good jumper i have done a lot of abuse to it and the frame is still in great condition. can go down any decent goes where u want it to
i completly destroyed the stock bars and wheelset so i got new ones.
Now that i got the new stab primo, i ride it a lot less duh!
the way it comes, i wouldn't buy it unless u are deciding to upgrade. it is a terrible cross country though.

For the ridiculously low price of 650, I didn't expect much...well surprise surprise, it literally blew away my much more bally-hooed GFisher joshua. This bike has super handling, great acceleration, balanced weight distribution, and the kinetics are solid. After upgrading the fork and rear suspension coil, and drivetrain, this bike rides as well as any bike in the 2000-2500 dollar range. I have pretty much gutted the entire bike of stock parts but it was rippin it up from the get go. Kudos to Mongoose for creating an outstanding bike and an outstanding price.

Bottom Line:
I started Mt biking 3 years ago and started right off with 98 mongoose NX 8-1. I have been happy with this bike and have logged over 2,000 dirt miles on this bike. I only replace items on this bike when they wore out or broke and they are listed under bike setup. My dropout got bent and I had a mongoose dealer order one for me. The dealer ordered all the different types of dropouts mongoose bikes have, but none of them fit my bike. He had to grind the one of the dropouts so that it could fit onto my bike. My frame recently cracked and again I asked a dealer to talk to mongoose to see if they would give me a replacement part. Mongoose said they will give me a new part and have shipped the rear frame part out and I should have it in a week or so. I am now a intermediate-advanced rider. I need a higher performance bike. It's time to retire this bike and buy a new one, this bike will be my beater bike.
What is fun with this bike is that it's so damn cheap for waht it is that you can afford upgrading to better components. There are things like the seatpost and stem that I don't care what brand they are as long as they hold up to the agression. If you change the right things like I did, this bike could turn out to be a kamikaze free-ride bike! If it's cheap enough, you should try to get the frame alone on a mail order because at around 300$, it's the best you can get...

Looks, frame design, handling.
Weaknesses:
average components. e.g Alivio parts mixed with STX RC.
Similar Products Used:
None worth mentioning.
Bike Setup:
Mongoose NX 8.1 Manitou Syder front shock with a Fasttrax rear.
Bottom Line:
I bought this bike as a crosstrainer (motorcross is the other sport), I find it an excellent handler and the suspension although cheap works great in all the terrain I've ridden so far. Over all I love it. Can't wait for my next ride.

Why so harsh, everyone?? The best bike I ever had...the components could be better though. And the saddle....it is not good. Change it before you hurt your self. But everything else...it's a beauty. I highly recommend.

This bike has no redeeming qualities at all, I got porked out of a kilobuck for a glorified roadmaster. Shop around before buying it, there are real bikes out there for the same price. Mongoose should be ashamed of this one!
why are some people harsh about this bike? I know it's not a $2000 Cannondale-feeling bike, but I don't have a single problem with it. It rides VERY smooth, and for under $1000, I think it's a steal. Ok... so the front shocks could be better, but a full suspension bike for this price, and the comfort... oh yeah... if the seats bother you... spend an extra $30, and buy some Gel seats....

This bike is the worst. The DB x-2 is $100 more it comes with a component set 3 steps better. I ride it at my shop tons of times (bensons ski & sport, this place is cool) the rear shock isn't even plush as jim would say. My buyer(sir richard of beef pot roast)doesn't know what he's buying, he's an old geezer.

Wake up and smell the shit people, this bike is not good. Come on Mongoose, an Alivio crankset on a thousand dollar bike! What's up with the cheesy stem, handlebar, plastic seat, generic brakes, and JUNK no name shock. Mongoose equals ripoff. For the same money, DBR has the X2, which is an LX/XT bike with a 100mm Bomber and a Fox shock. Bye-bye Mongoose, Brunswick killed half-decent bike brand, soon only Wal-Mart will carry that crap. Oh, I have to give it a f'ing star.

I was also very pleased with this bike. It is a great ride and I have beat this bike to death and it rides great. The frame is built well and looks cool too. I guess I got different componentry than Michael cause I had a Rock Shox Indy C shock, but that could be because I bought the bike in Canada. I have no complaints about this bike, it is great cross country and decends great and climbs good too. Overall, well worth the $1,400 Canadian.

I am very pleased with this bicycle. It has been very reliable and I think it is built very well. For the price (under $1,000 bucks), you can't beat it. I know the componetry is not the best (Manitou Spyder shock for example), but the bike was in my price range.
