Favorite Trail:Tiger Mountain Trails
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $999.00
Purchased At:Mikes Bikes Chas,SC
Strengths:Bike still rocks after 8 years of riding!! I looked at Intense,Santa Cruz, etc and read all the hype (VPP) but cant part with my Mantra. No mechanical problems ever.
Weaknesses:There are alot of lighter bikes out there now. Bike is considered heavy today. Need to upgrade components to get the weight down.
Similar Products Used:None. No reason to use a different product.
Bike Setup:upgraded components: Fox forx RLT,Mavic crosstrail wheelset,XT cranks,SLX shifters,XT V brakes(no disc available anymore),Kenda tires.
Bottom Line:The bike is a classic and still performs at the level of new bikes in it's class with some upgrades. Definetly not a big hit insane downhill bike. Great epic, all mountain bike.

Favorite Trail:Tiger Mountain trails
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $999.00
Purchased At:Mikes Bikes, Chas, SC
Strengths:Very responsive bike, Great for technical trails, reliable performance
Weaknesses:Handlebars sit a bit low for a large rider (6"3", 215lbs, Large frame) such as myself making it less forgiving riding off drop-offs. Slight bobbing from rear shock.
Similar Products Used:None
Bike Setup:All currently stock. Rishi Race Black/Red paint.
Bottom Line:Overall great bike. I am thinking of upgrading the rear shock to the new 5th element(best shock on the market) to decrease bobbing. I have considered upgrading to the Palomino but am upgrading the components of my Mantra instead.

Favorite Trail:Blankets Creek / Yellow River (CLoop)
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $1500.00
Purchased At:Free Flite Bicycles
Strengths:Great feel for the trail...climbs as fast as it descends. I haven't experienced the 'weak' frame problems like the ~200 pounders (I'm not far behind at ~180), but I think it's all relative to how you ride. I've only bent 1 hanger, so overall I've been VERY pleased! Oh yeah, you like like a bada$$ riding it too!
Weaknesses:Components suck bigtime...ESPECIALLY the wheelset. Slap some stronger rims with Smoke/Dart kevlars and you're flyin'. The bontrager clipless pedals are a joke too...grab some egg beaters!
Similar Products Used:Hardtail Trek (loved it)
Hardtail GT (never again!)
Bike Setup:Smoke/Dart/Sun RhinoLite rims w/XT Disc hubs Avid CPS Disc brakes. Removed almost all of the Bontrager junk (except the crankset, but it's time is nigh!) and replaced them with quality parts. Flite Titanium seat and cordless TARGA cyclometer.
Bottom Line:It's the 300Z of mountain bikes-I feel like I'm in my own little club with my kick-butt bike tearin' up the trail (figuratively, of course).

If you love to ride (and I mean on trails, not on the sidewalk)...grab one...grab two even. I'm never letting go of mine, so good luck finding one! If you're not that serious, you may find that you can only ride for a little while before your lower back starts screaming-it's not a beach cruiser!

Advice - I went for the Black/Red mantra b/c it's a much better paint job than that sissy blue and white comp...but...TAKE THE BONTRAGER JUNK OFF!

Date Reviewed: May 28, 2002
Favorite Trail:Forest Park (West Hills of Portland)
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $1300.00
Purchased At:River City Bikes, Portland, OR
Strengths:Good rear suspension travel, great uphill rider, excellent looking bike, light weight, setup for disc brake upgrades in the future.
Weaknesses:Some average components but my components have worked flawlessly to date. I found the handle bars too low and away causing me to have to bend over too far which was strenuous on the back for long trips but probably fine for those serious riders. I changed the stem for one with a steeper angle bringing the bar closer and higher up - A riser bar would also help cure this. My rear air shock is starting to make some "squishy" noises but I assume this due to wear - only noticeable when it really compresses
Similar Products Used:Cannondale, Gary Fisher, Trek
Bike Setup:Fully stock except for different stem with steeper angle. XL frame size.
Bottom Line:I can from a no-suspension bike (Norco Bigfoot) to this and there is absolutely no comparison. The Mantra is much lighter than my old bike and has full suspension! I find it much easier riding up hill on this bike vs. my old one and I can absolutely fly on fast downhill sections that would loosen my fillings on my old bike - I look forward to these trails now vs. hanging on for dear life trying to keep up. I tried out several bikes before purchasing the Mantra but I chose this one due to its rear suspension feel (great going uphill and lots of travel for fast downhills that are bumpy). I also think this bike is better suited for large folks like myself (~200 lbs). I also love the simple looks of this bike and it get lots of compliments on the trail. If you are lucky enough to find a used one of these I would definitely recommend it if it is still in good condition.

Favorite Trail:Westwood Park
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $2000.00
Purchased At:built it myself
Strengths:Lots of strengths - 1. Great Frame, one of the best designed and best built ever, 2. Has Great Travel, 5-6 inches, 3. Gets killer looks on the trail, 4. If built right it will work like a dream, 5. No other product like it, 6. Performs like a lightweight xc or a killer big travel freeride.
Weaknesses:1. Shifting, due to the single pivot design - when the frame shock compresses it throws the shifting off drastically (ghost shifting), this becomes a real pain in the ass and makes me want to ride my hardtail, this is the only problem i have discovered but it really sucks, Mountain Bike Magazine said to lenghthen the rear cable and housing that attaches to the rear derailleur, i have tryed this and it didn't work for me, i need help - if you know how to fix please e-mail me
Similar Products Used:Cannondale Team Hardtail
Trek 8900 - Bad Ass Hardtail
Bike Setup:Psylo Race, Drivetrain full xt except for xtr rear derailleur, Hayes Hydraulic Disc Brakes, Awesome Setup
Bottom Line:This is a great bike, wouldn't trade it for the world, it is a thing of beauty, but it is nice to have a spare bike due to the shifting problem, i would definitly recommend buying one of these if you can find one, it is probably one of the best if not the best full-suspension frames made thus far in the innovation of f.s. frames

Favorite Trail:The Zipper in Spokane Washington
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $300.00
Purchased At:I work at a bike shop
Strengths:This is the best climbing full suspension bike on the market. All components work well together, but they are a little cheap if you are forced to pay the full price
Weaknesses:none. If anything maybe the level of the components, but they still work well.
Similar Products Used:Trek Fuel, Trek Stp, Cannondale Raven, Schwinn Homegrown Pro
Bike Setup:Full XTR, Fox Float fork with lockout, Fox Float Rl rear shock with lockout,
Bottom Line:If you can still find one of these bikes buy it!!! This is one of the fastest and most comfortable bikes you can buy. I have ridden a lot of different fully suspended bikes and none of the climb as well as the Mantra. Even though I have the lockout on my rear shock you really don't need it. I rarely use it and I race every weekend. This bike is perfect for ahyone who loves a good fast ride, but might be a little too much for a beginner. 5 Flaming turds for this bike.

Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $670.00
Purchased At:Private Sale
Strengths:Totally Awesome Bike!!!! Looks great, with this bike you will get all kinds of looks on the trail. It is kind of rare and hard to find one of these beasts. It has the weight and speed of a cross-country bike with the strength and travel of a free-ride setup.
Weaknesses:Components. I didn't like the LX components. Didn't like the stock wheels or tires. None really though, great bike.
Similar Products Used:Cannondale Team Saeco Hardtail - Great Bike
Bike Setup:Complete Custom Setup - Cost an extra $1500, but well worth it for this bad ass frame.
Shifters - Shimano XT Rapidfire
Front Derailleur - Shimano LX
Rear Derailleur - Shimano XTR Rapidrise - Awesome
Crankset - Shimano XT Hollowtech, Octalink - Lighter than XTR
Cassette - Shimano XT - Better than XTR due to gearing
Brake Levers - Shimano XT
Cables - Shifters - Gore-Tex/Fibre Optic Brakes - Gore-Tex
Handlebar - Titec Hellbent
Stem - Azonic
Brakes - Shimano Deore Mechanical Disc - Heavy, Not very good but cheap for the money and who needs brakes anyway
Pedals - Time Atac Carbon
Rims - Mavic Tubeless - Awesome
Hubs - Formula Disc
Tires - Hutchinson Pythons

Bottom Line:Totally Awesome Bike, wouldn't trade or sell for the world. Completely awesome if you can get past the LX components and wheel/tire combo. If you can find one buy it fast. Its totally worth every penny.

Favorite Trail:Single track in the woods
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $1300.00
Purchased At:Mt. Lake cycle
Strengths:The bike is very responsive, quick to negotiate the roots, rocks, holes, and misc. when you are all out. The travel in the suspension makes for a great ride.
Weaknesses:The rear triangle broke at the rear axle. Klien fixed it, but it took them 6 weeks to respond. The angle of the front fork is quite verticle, which gives it the quick response, this combined with the Manitou fork makes the bike very quick to pull the rear wheel into the air when going over logs, dropping into holes, or steep decents. I broke a pedal within 30 days of owning the bike,(they replace it), The rear derailer hanger bends very easily and I need to keep a stock pile of hangers, due to the lead time of a couple of weeks to get a new one.
Similar Products Used:I owned and rode a Klien Attitude hard tail for 6 years that I loved. (Kind of hard on the tail bone.)
Bike Setup:I changed to a Dart front tire, and a Smoke rear tire to clear the mud. Put Yeti grips, bar ends and Shimono pedals.
Bottom Line:I ride hard, I weight 200 lbs. I like the bike. The bike is aggressively responsive and is not designed for the casual rider. A taller front fork would be a benefit to the geometry.

Strengths:Agile responsive climber,Good looks,plush ride.Rear has plenty of travel.Very strong frame,can take my 240 lb with ease.
Weaknesses:Steep descents can be very very scary till you get used to it.Stock revolt tires lack traction.Front derailuer needs lots of adjustments.
Similar Products Used:Trek 800,Trek Y3
Bike Setup:stock except for Time atac pedals,Hayes hydro disc,Mavic223 disc rims,Panaracer Fire XC Pro tires,Bontrager FS 2000 Saddle,XL frame, bar ends
Bottom Line:This is my second FS bike the last one being an entry level bike. There is a definite learning curve with this bike and unless you spend some time on it , a test drive wont tell you crap about it.Getting over the steep head angle takes time and a few endos. But when you get dialed into the ride its unbelievable. It will take you through tecnical rocky sections with ease, the rear stays in contact with the ground always .Making climbing super easy. Its as if it wants to climb all by itself.
Being a Clyde I have set this bike up with the Stiffest spring in the Manitou SX forks and run the Fox R at 350 lb's. The Hayes give excellant stopping power. I love this bike and it has improved my riding skills in technical areas and descents. And contrary to what one guy said this bike is NOT a Trek. It is 100% KLein, with all the Klein quality you expect. Sadly you will only get this bike used in the future as its design has been dropped ,not because of bad geometry but because of competing popular designs.Hence the Adept. Which may be my next bike, as I am sold on Klein.Yes you pay more for the name, but the quality is unmatched.
This is not a DH bike, more like of an all around bike. Great for the long rides.

Favorite Trail:fast/downhill ones
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $940.00
Purchased At:Supergo
Strengths:Lite weight for a xc full suspension bike, built quality and unique design.
Weaknesses:Racing downhill... trees up ahead, turning to avoid unnecessary confrontation, soft breaking applied, rear tire went sliding but not locked up, turned a little more, both tires not respond to the direction I was pointing, found myself traveling sideways for about 3 seconds then... "BAM!"

CONCLUSION: The stock tires ((F) Bontrager Super-X 49/48 & (R) Bontrager Super-X 47/46) are fast but has absolutely no grip, I might as well use slicks.
Bike Setup:Change: tires (IRC Mythos XC)
Addition: bar ends (Bontrager)
Bottom Line:Its been a year now, I still love my Mantra. I looked around and still have not found a bike that's more appealing to me (the Trek STP soft-tails came in close, I know, I know, its a totally different ride). Dispite its lite weight, I continued my research on better parts with less weight. As a result, I decided to hold off on any purchases, wear the stock components down a little more, and change all the components to xtr (or what ever Shimano has to surprise us in the next year or two) at a later date.

Price Paid: $1400.00
Purchased At:chelsea bike & sports
Strengths:Strong frame. lightweight, and comes in an XL frame
Weaknesses:none, but cheaper bikes will copy klein's designs
Similar Products Used:this is my 2nd bike..I upgraded from a Trek 4500 which I outgrew in about 1.5 months, I knew I wanted a FS bike and happened to come across one in a local store. the frame design is distinctive, and more peole stare at this bike..:)
Bike Setup:stock for now, I pumped up the rear shock and dialed up the pre-load on the manitou sx fork to almost max to diminish any bob on long climbs. I'll upgrade components & wheels next year and keep rollin'...it works great on trails or concrete. much more comfortable than my hardtail. '01 mantras paint scheme looks lame.
Bottom Line:not an entry level bike, but it suits my needs just perfectly, I found a '99 model brand new but has a few scratches on it, store owner claimed it was shipped from klein that way, which I find damn hard to believe...but if the price was right, I'd buy it, upgrade the components and keep my GF off of it!

Favorite Trail:Catamount Hill, Bear Brook State Park
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $1400.00
Purchased At:LBS
Strengths:-Smooth and and responsive on flat single track
-Climbs great as long as you are seated in the saddle
-Solid spec of components for the money
-Not too much pedal bob while climbing
Weaknesses:-Bobs alot on downhill with stock Fox Float and Manitou SX
-Semi-Slick tires do not hold well at all while cornering or climbing
-Sucks at climbing when you stand up on the bike, you get pedal bob like theres no tommorrow
-Bontrager RE-1 pedals, use Time ATAC
-You pay more for the Klein name and frame and thus recieve lower end components than on a comparably priced bike.
Similar Products Used:First real FS
Bike Setup:Stock
Bottom Line:An extremely smooth ride that climbs great(while in the seat) and with a suspension design that eliminates most of the bob that plagues other FS designs.

I would suggest paying the extra money for the comp version to get the higher end components, this allows you to control dampening on the suspension and gives you a smoother lighter weight drivetrain.

Change out the tires and the pedals and this is a great comfortable agile ride. Too bad Klein discontinued this line in favor of the Adept series. I suspect they will be back next year.

Strengths:Frame design, weight, looks. As most said, Climbs awesome. Almost, if not better than my old, quality hardtail(during climbing).
Weaknesses:A riser bar would be a plus.
Similar Products Used:2001 Cannondale Jeckll 500, 2001 Trek fuel 90, 2001 Jamis dakar comp. Scott Unitrack St(my old hardtail).
Bike Setup:Large frame.Bontrager Race modified riser bars and ends. tooth fairy chainring guard. The rest is OEM.
Bottom Line:This bike is awesome. I tested several FS bikes. This was by far the best for the money.(the Jamis a close 2nd) It's light. The frame design is pretty simple and it rides like a hardtail if you want it to (by airing up the rear shock). In my opinion a riser bar helps alot. The stock bar makes me feel like endoing over the bars. The components are run of the mill, but work great. I had to install a stiffer elastomer in the front fork because of my weight. Overall I am very pleased. This bike does it all for me from the technical to the pavement. I wasn't sure if I wanted to go FS, but this bike made the decision for me. Great bike.

Purchased At:Markee's in Kennewick, WA
Strengths:Plush ride, excellent climber, smooth drivetrain. Looks soo sweet. You'll sacrifice the body to save the bike.
Weaknesses:Pedals were hard to get the right hold vs release. Swapped with old Richey's I was use to. Either I couldn't get out of them or would "bounce" out of them going over large log ramps. Probably just needed to be "broke in."
Bike Setup:Stock except pedals. Medium frame and I'm 73" tall.
Bottom Line:I switched from a 99 Rockhopper FS. No comparison, I climb better, negotiate obstacles with eaze, and my chode isn't sore afterwards. I had no problems transitioning from my hardtail to this bike. I don't want to stop riding but my cold winter muscles start screaming at me after 3 hours. FYI this was the last base Mantra in OR, ID and WA. I called all but about 4 shops listed on Klien's site. Grab one quick if want a new one. A few comps floating around though. Last years inventory is almost dry. Paying 1K new made this a steal.

Strengths:Best looking bike on the market, Fit & finish is perfect, great rear suspension.
Weaknesses:I might try a riser bar, it does seem a little endo-prone on steep downhills
Similar Products Used:cannondale jeckle, schwinn rocket 88, trek fuel
Bike Setup:all stock, Manitou, Bontrager, XT Etc.
Bottom Line:I love this bike. It has made me a much better rider. The rear suspension has this ability to only be there when you need it, and never bobs on the flats. It is very light and agile - the handling is almost instinctive, it's a hell of a step up from my costco Mongoose. I guess this model is getting hard to come by, so snap one up if you can, as the 2001 model is butt ugly.

Strengths:Stock this thing kicks the CRAP out of any other FS I rode. I have been riding a rigid single for 4-5 yrs. as my main ride, but ride anything/everything I can get my hands on. I spent quite alot of time on research, but it all came down to the ride. I had no intention of buying a Klein, in fact while on the test ride I thought, WHAT AM I DOING? Anyway, needless to say it's awesome, tracks like a real mofo, climbs like a,(dare I say it again?) freakin' GOAT, did I mention it looks sweet? DOPE bike for those who have tried and HATED FS.

Bottom Line:I spent a load of money on this bike knowing that I could of bought a Trek 9.9. Who cares!!
This bike is nice even with the factory selection of components. Once set up, the bike is very plush on the trail but solid enough to climb. Being a clyde and punishing the bike, it still holds up. I recommend this bike if you can still get it.

I've read all the reviews and convinced this is the perfect bike for the riding I do. Strengths:There are lots of strengths:
-KILLER looks
-Easily upgradeable
-Huge rear travel (7 inches)
-Nice Fork (80mm Manitou SX '00)
-Climbs as well as, or better than a hardtail (even without rear lockout)
-Strong descender (Others might want to upgrade to a riser bar-I did. It's a personal preference thing)
-Stable at almost any speed (I've never been able to hit more than 70Km/h (45Mp/h) on the trail
-Light as hell (27 pounds/12.3Kg's)
Weaknesses:-The treads (bontrager Super-X) don't grab very well
-The Manitou SX holds up great until the drop-offs exceed 5-6 feet
Similar Products Used:Cannondale Jekyll 3000, Schwinn S-10 (The OLD carbon fiber frame w/huge and heavy rear swingarm)
Bike Setup:Stock, except for Avid Mechanical Disc Brakes, Sun Rhyno Lite XL wheels w/XT hubs, a TITEC hellbent riser bar, and a Marzocchi Z.1
Bottom Line:The Mantra is a exceptional deal for what you pay (est. $1500 US, $2400 CAN)Anyone who is new to full suspension bikes, is looking for a light XC bike, or wants a long travel trials/freeride bike, this is THE bike to buy. Forget those ugly, outdated Specialized Enduro's and things like that. They perform nowhere close to the Mantra. For freeride or trials, I would recommend upgrading the fork to a stiffer Marzocchi design. Don't waste your money on a Psylo- the Mantra deserves better than that.

Who should really buy this bike? Well, really, anyone can buy this bike(duh), but those who are considering it must face the facts. This bike is not intended to be raced downhill, and don't even think of putting a triple or double clamp fork on it. Doing this will put extra stress on the frame, and although it looks beefy and strong, it is not strong enough for DH. A double/triple clamp fork will not only destroy the warranty on the frame(lifetime), but it may also put too much stress on the headtube and cause it to crack. To sum all of the above up in a few simple words - BUY THIS BIKE! IT IS AMAZING!

Just my two cents. Later.

It incorporates all the climbing ability of a Hard tail with the plush ride of a Full Suspension. It simply does not bob. No matter what! I did however break the rear triangle on a trip to Whitetail Ski Resort. I don't recall being that harsh on the bike but it snapped anyway. Klein did replace it for me but it took a little over 2 months. It seems they had to make me a new rear tringle from scratch. With some TLC this bike is a great all around ride. Weaknesses:-The URT design bobs too much in OR out of the saddle
-Asking price is a bit much($1,600?!)
-Flat bars--it should come with risers
-NOT a true Klein(should be badged as a Trek, but that I guess that brand doesn't have enough snob appeal)
-The frame is not strong enough for freeriding, feels a little flexy to me
Similar Products Used:Jamis Dakar Comp(AWESOME),Cannondale Super V400(pretty good, but overpriced and overrated)
Bike Setup:This bike belongs to my rich cousin--he's into freeriding and BMX,and actually DOMNHILLS with this bike!I think he's frickin' crazy...Well anyway,he modified this bike by taking off the clipless pedals and replacing them with pedals and clips without the straps..I don't know why
Bottom Line:Overall,I expected to be more impressed than I was.It felt way too bobby. It's also a special-purpose bike--the Mantra is more suited to the lycra-wearing crowd than to trailbike use.Its frame isn't very strong.I've heard lurid stories of the front section of the Mantra snapping like a toothpick under extreme abuse. My cousin actually uses this bike for DH..he must be out of his mind. This bike is a bit overpriced too.For the same amount of money, you could buy a Specialized Enduro FSR,or better yet a Jamis Dakar Expert, which would walk all over this bike.

But overall, the Mantra is pretty good. It's plush, the frame design is incredibly simple(only one ball-bearing pivot),it's light, and it's got a pretty good component mix.But I'm not all that wowed by the Mantra..for the money,I expected better.

Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $1500.00
Purchased At:Bike Barn in Rice Village (awesome LBS)
Strengths:frame design is simple and beautiful,
upgradable but decent components (XT/LX, Avid, Answer, Fox)
Weaknesses:Icon seatpost
Similar Products Used:old-school fixed frame/forks only
Bike Setup:Stock 2000 base model (the sweet black one) with upgrades:
Specialized comfort seat,
Thomson Elite seatpost,
2000 upgraded Manatou Mars C carbon fork
Bottom Line:This is the bike on which I've rediscovered my love of mountainbiking. Having previously only ridden fixed frame/fork bikes, I've enjoyed the plush ride of having shocks on both ends of this bike tremendously. I've ridden it a lot over the year I've owned it, and although I don't have much basis for comparison, I'm very pleased with the Mantra.

I was initially drawn to the Klein because of its elegant unified rear triangle (URT) frame design - simple and beautiful. Since the bottom bracket is on the pivoting URT and not fixed in relation to the seat and handlebars, the bike will give a slight 'inchworm' or 'pogo' effect when the rear shock compresses and decompresses. By pumping up the rear shock you can stiffen the suspension and minimize this effect. Although I haven't ridden enough other full suspension bikes enough for a good basis of comparison, I have not found the URT inchworm effect to be a significant detriment. It rides and climbs quite smoothly.

Interestingly, Klein is moving away from the URT in its 2001 line - the new Adept is akin to the Gary Fisher Sugar. I can't wait to try one out for comparison, but I can't see myself wanting to dump my Mantra.

Okay - the stock compontents - the base model has some parts that you may want to change out. Although I paid more than some people who seem to have gotten late season closeout prices, I was successful in negotiating with the bikeshop to swap out the seat and tires when I bought the bike.

The biggest failure was the Icon seatpost, which although is lightweight and has a seductive grey carbon color, is pure junk. No matter how hard you tork down the bolt, the seat cradle will eventually slip on hard bumps. I've recently upgraded to a Thomson Elite. I just hope the Icon handlebar, stem, and crankset don't crap out on me like the seatpost! I've noticed that Klein has switched to Bontrager on its 2001 bikes - good move.

I'm also upgrading the 2000 Manitou SX fork to a 2000 Manitou Mars C carbon fork - not because the SX is bad, but because I wanted a lighter fork with more adjustability.

I will also upgrade the shifters, deraileurs, and brakes as they wear out.

Bottom line - although I haven't compared the Mantra to other bikes, I'm very pleased with its quality and performance.

Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $1200.00
Strengths:Great climbing F/S bike. Handles speed well and soaks up the rough.
Weaknesses:Brakes. For such an otherwise decked bike, Klein could have put on something other than Avid SD10.
Similar Products Used:Only Hardtails.
Bike Setup:Standard
Bottom Line:This bike takes a little getting used to. Took a number of rides to find the bikes balance in a variety of situations. Now however, I'm in love. The steeps get better with time logged on the Mantra (at first very scary, almost like your going over the top). The tires, Bontrager Superstock, are fast (most complain they dont grab) and with time you will adjust your riding to fit the speed of the tire. (At first I hated the tire, now - I love). The brakes however--well just suck. I have to adjust after almost every hard ride. Working on what I will upgrade too. Got to do something with the brakes.
Overall, I'm riding better than ever and without the pains of a hardtail. Would buy bike again in a second. Great ride if your willing to learn the bike.

Price Paid: $940.00
Purchased At:SuperGo
Strengths:Artistic and unique design, good stock components, lite weight, plush ride, good ground clearance and size, the bulkyness best fit big and tall people. (Quick note: This bike should be named Trek-Mantra.)
Weaknesses:In general... none.

Personal opinion/preferences:
Its a Trek, not a Klein, I bought it because its a fine bike at a great price, not for its name. And come to think of it, Klein (having being quite conservative with their designs) wouldn't have designed a bike like this one.
Origional price (MSRP) - $1,580, I don't think so, $1,200 would be more reasonable.
Breaks and shifting cables - the frame is HUGE! Is it possible to run the cables inside the frame like how Klein used to do it traditionally with their hard tail & street bikes?
27 speed - I think 21 speed would be sufficient.
Flat bar - might want to upgrade it to a riser.
Water bottle cage/tire pump holder bracket - I tried to install my tire pump onto the brackets on the underframe, it was a waste of time, water bottle cage & some battery pack for head lights only.
Similar Products Used:Gary Fisher, Specialized, GT
Bike Setup:Stock
Bottom Line:My understanding is that Trek has bought out Klein a while back, and if I am wrong, please notify me and keep me updated. Trek did a fine job sustaining Klein quality. If their corporate sponsors/CEOs thought slapping on the Klein name would increase sales, then that's what they have to do. But I still would have purchased this bike if it bared the Trek logo & name.

Here is an interesting thought... take a look at the 2001 Klein full suspension line up. Looks like Trek/Klein is either phasing out or abandoning the Mantra design. That might say something about the over-all performance and efficiency (the ride and or the manufacturing cost) of the Mantra design which I am unaware of.

Climbs like crazy! I'm a smaller rider....5'8" & 165 Lbs. The bike does not feel like 27 lbs.....the rear suspension eats up everything and lets me get away with stuff I couldn't on other bikes. Strengths:Climbs great for a full suspension bike. You get the benefits of a full suspension without sacrificing the climbing ability of a hardtail. This IS the full suspension bike for people who do not like full suspension bikes!
Weaknesses:It takes a while to dial this bike in to be fully comfortable and efficient. Tires are tractionless.
Similar Products Used:GT XCR 3000, GT Avalanche (test road both several times). The XCR is too "bouncy" during pedaling and the Avalanche is too harsh on boulders and roots.
Bike Setup:2000 Mantra with Azonic riser bars, Thompson Elite layback seatpost, Panaracer Fire XC tires
Bottom Line:When I first bought this bike I had an awful time getting it set-up correctly. I was not wildy happy with it the first few weeks. But now I have it dialed in correctly and it is the bomb. I raced in an adventure race this past weekend and it had 60 km of climbing and my team (all with Klein bikes) blew past everbody up the hill - the hardtails were left in our wake. This thing chews up the nastiest singletrack. It is made for rocky, rooted trails. The bike absorbs the ground clutter and allows you to keep on pedaling not matter the terrain. This bike absolutely rules. It you are looking for a full suspension bike to take the edge off rough, rocky singletrack trails, but still want to be able to climb like you are on a hardtail - this is your bike!!!!! Klein should rename the company "Climb" rather than "Klein"

Bottom Line:I have only had the bike three months, but it's great in the single track, it climbs hard, and the full suspension allows me to do things I could never do before. To say it floats over the rough stuff would give the wrong impression, but it's the only way I can express it.
I'm still playing around with seat height, but as a 180 lbs single track rider that like uphills, this is the bike! Even in the granny gear, I don't pop the front tire and I keep cranking the uphill. I haven't ridden much in the past two years and yet the bike doesn't punish me at all. It was a hard call to make the jump from a no-suspension to a full-suspension bike, but I'm glad I did it.

Weaknesses:If you don't like full-time full-suspension, it may not be your bag.
Similar Products Used:This is my first FS bike.
Bike Setup:Stock: Bonty hubs, rims, stem, riser bar, pedals; Manitou SX-E and Fox Float; LX up front, XT in the rear, LX crank.
Bottom Line:I have a 99 model Mantra. It's pretty much the same as the 2k, but the boom is pearl white with red lettering. Also, some of the old Bontrager stuff (the stem for instance) was replaced with Icon stuff. The 99 also has mounts for disc brakes on the rear swingarm: a plus for adaptability, a minus for weight.

I'm six-feet tall and a bit over two hundred pounds, and let me tell you, my large frame Mantra is a godsend. Being the brutal, not-terribly-skilled rider I am, I use every bit of the Manitou's three inches on downhills, but the seven inches of travel in the rear has never been anything but plush, responsive, and reliable.

The bike is completely active. The rear suspension pushes the front suspension by way of the boom, and vice-versa. So if you dig that crazy, rear-suspension-disappears-when-you-stand kind of bike, or that just-a-little-rear-suspension-to-take-the-edge-off kind of bike, the Mantra is definitely not for you. What you lose in hardtail acceleration and precision you reap tenfold in comfort and forgiveness. Thanks to longer time in the saddle and bonus confidence in gnarly terrain, I don't regret an ounce of my bike's 27lbs.

As everyone else said, the paint and workmanship are absoultely top-notch. Say what you want about the good old US of A, we have a few people that know a few things about building bikes, and Gary Klein's staff is way high on the totem pole.

Trust this: If you want anything but a fully-active, full-suspension bike, then shop around. But if you ride the Mantra and like it, then save your nickels and dimes and buy it. It's certainly the best for some of us.

Strengths:Great balance and decent enough components (check Klein Bikes for details) for the price (list $1599 but can be found for $100-$200 less). With its weight and aggressive geometry (I ate it on the demo drive descending a rutted hill behind the shop), it is intended for tighter single track which is ubiquitous in the metro Detroit area (Novi Tree Farm, Maybury, Highland Rec). Climbing is easy with no noticable bounce.
When sitting on it, my body (78 kg) almost melted into the frame; you become part of the bike.
Weaknesses:Frame pivot squeaked a little bit (that's what lube is for, right?).

Meaning excellent aluminum (aircraft grade), welding (seamless) and paint (drool :-P).
This configuration has been around a few years and is obviously proven (as is Cannondale's, only lighter).

This may not be the bike for heavier riders. Its very tight (my head is right over the front hub) so I wouldn't recommend it for first timers either. The components are OK (again, check Klein for list) but upgrade if you don't like 'em (or try the mantra comp; same frame & geometry).

This will be my first FS after years on a cro-mo Fisher hardtail (yes, I am purchasing it & will provide updates into the season).
