from Boston, MA USA Date Reviewed: June 8, 2001 | | Duration Product Used: | 1 Year | | Price Paid: |
$650.00 | | Purchased At: | Bicycle Bill's | | Strengths: | A great frame for the money. A good wheelset with bombproof Mavic x221 rims, powertools front hub and Shimano rear. The 1" Powertools rear soft-tail shock absorbs enough rear end hits (particularly with airs) to take the edge off without pedal induced bobbing. Infinitely upgradable (without disc tabs, though) | | Weaknesses: | A little heavy, and the components are on the low end side, but with the Rock Shox Jett fork and threadless Kore Kockpit, the handling and bump eating capacity is on a par with anything at this and higher price ranges. The cranks and brakes were the first to go on mine. The upgrades to lighter components helped. | | Similar Products Used: | Specialized Stumpjumper Comp | | Bike Setup: | Kore bars, stem, seatpost. Powertools brakes, headset, front hub. Shimano Alivio front, Deore rear derailleurs. Mavic x221 rims, Shimano rear hub, 15 gauge DT spokes, Moab sweetroll semi-slicks. Rock Shox Jett front suspension. Cheap no-name cranks. KHS saddle. | | Bottom Line: | I really like this bike. I'm an amateur wrench, with some considerable bike building experience and this is a frame that will last me a long time (lifetime warranty!) You will need to upgrade some components if you ride hard, but for the casual weekend warrior looking for a soft-tail at a good price, you can't get much better than this. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |
