Favorite Trail:Any trail I am riding
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $700.00
Purchased At:ebay
Strengths:Excellent as stock, I-drive works, great value
Weaknesses:Seat, a little heavy
Similar Products Used:an old and busted Trek Antelope 830
Bike Setup:Mostly stock except seat has been traded out for a WTB laser
Bottom Line:This is my first full suspension. I have ridden it for the last 4 years and am very pleased with the performance. I am faster and more confident wherever I ride than I ver was on my first mountain bike. Granted, it was an ooooooold POC that I had ridden into the ground. The only category that this bike does not beat the old bike in is weight. But hey, I have better gearing to deal with it. Great deal for the money.

Strengths:This is a first edition '99 straight from the factory; never sold by a dealer. All around great ride. Smokes up hill as well as xc downhills. Also a great ride in the 'hood when curbs and alleys are present, the hotties at the local seem to get wet over it too. This bike was used by GT as a test mule so it has a few different appendeges attached to its sultry frame. SID ultra lights up front Fox tail, XTR components, Thompson post, light Mavic rollers w/ stock GT fatty hubs. 9 speed cluster. Painted white frame with blue rear triangle, black and red decals(who drew this thing ?!?!?!?!?) Light at <27 lbs.
Weaknesses:Doesnt want to sleep in the same bedroom because its bottom bracket is so noisy.
Similar Products Used:Ex girlfriend, KTM 640 Adventure, Ferrari 430, my best friends home brew.
Bike Setup:Medium rare with a lot of spice. Very light salad fixin's with untasteful dressing, kinda like a Harley.
Bottom Line:Great top but the bottom needs greased all the time. She doesn't mind being ridden hard at all, in fact, the more sweet talkin', the harder she rides me.
The best bike I've ever owned. Since '99.

Strengths:I-drive does what it claims to, keeping the chain tension constant throughout the rear wheel's travel, allowing power to be put down over the bumpy bits. Low centre of gravity due the heavy eccentric bottom bracket.
Weaknesses:Front gear cable routing under bottom bracket attracts grit and knocks from stones. It's not possible to fit the majority of chain devices on the market due to the bottom bracket rotating. My frame, which is a small size, developed several cracks around the seatpost support and is now back at the bikeshop. This is a problem with the small size frames only which have a different style seat support to the medium and large frames (no cut out hole). I only weigh 10stone and have done no drops over 5foot onto a flat landing. The compression adjust/lockout on the 2001 rockshox psylo sl no longer works. The formula b4 hydraulic disc brakes were let down by the flimsy levers, both of which broke.
Similar Products Used:A friends specialized enduro
Bike Setup:As standard except; Hope mini 165mm front and back, Hope xc rear hub, XT shortcage rear mech, Tioga cube dh stem and bar, Odi ruffian lock-on grips, 24seven 88 saddle, Dmr magnesium V12 pedals, Dmr ring thing bash/rock guard, Panaracer fire xc 2.1 rear and fire freeride 2.4 front tyres.
Bottom Line:This bike was great until the frame cracked. I may have abused it though as it is really a cross country bike, not a jump or freeride bike. The parts are now all on a new hardtail frame.

Strengths:Good parts and frame, Light, great climber, works very well in the tight woods of southeast alaska.
Weaknesses:the i-drive will eventually become worn and loose when used excessively and used on drops and jumps. Rims die quickly but would probably be fine if used only for cross country.
Similar Products Used:GT LTS, Giant, Scott.
Bike Setup:All stock with rhyno lites.
Bottom Line:Awesome bike, I abused the bike soo badly. I took a 15' drop to almost flat several times and quite a few 8' drops to flat those being the harshest, but took constant jumping and very hard trail riding with lots of fast rocky stump laiden stair using trails. The frame eventually broke but i sold all the parts to my friend who put them on his giant XTC. the rear shock was toast by that time, but the psylo is still working good after blowing it out 3 times. All it needed was new seals and back to new everytime. The bike had very comfortable geometry standing or sitting. I cut the bars down to make it more my kind of bike and enjoyed every minute of it. Had as much fun on it as my RM7 and much more than my RM9. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a fun bike and a great all purpose cross country bike. If your going to treat it like it did it will last a good 4-5 months with everyday use, but id get something a bit heavier.

Strengths:very good value for money good spec and quite well made.
Weaknesses:standard seatpost creaks if you have the saddle back a bit, it's a bid on the heavy side (then again so am I) formula B4's are ok-ish
Similar Products Used:I also own a 1999 GT zaskar and have just bought a 2004 enduro expert so I'm selling the i-drive.
Bike Setup:standard except for hope mini's and a raceface XY lay back seatpost (stops the creaking and gives me more room) put some green wildgripper tyres on, it looks the muts nuts.
Bottom Line:I think GT should have just stuck to hardtails and BMX's the large frame is a little small for me and i feel cramped on it (if your over 6' i would buy the XL). the i-drive system is great on single track but struggles on climbs due to its weight. MUCH PREFER MY HARDTAIL FOR LONG RIDES!! despite the loss of traction.
to be fair the bike is great on downhills.
never had any frame or pivot bushes problems it just gets regular services and a good clean

Strengths:Cool looking bike, Very plush ride
Weaknesses:Heavy, poor geometry

Bottom Line:You can pick up secondhand i-drives very cheaply for a very good reason. Firstly, it has a very high bottom bracket (14") so check you have the right size. Secondly, they have a very short top tube (20") You sit very high on these bikes which means backaches and a trip over the handlebars at the slightest excuse. Personally, I hated mine and don't own it anymore!

Bottom Line:I love this bike, it's been ridden hard in the worst possible conditions for over one year. Only had to pay for a couple of tune-ups (and three sets of tires). Just got a new '03 1.0 to build my dream bike. Had reason to call GT direct yesterday and was very happy to hear that they are back in full action and eager to see that every one gets the parts needed to keep the I-Drive riding. They provided me with the necessary rear shock bushings, mud flap and cable proctector for under the bottom bracket for my new frame.

Strengths:This is an update to my earlier review (see below).
My frame is still performing well, and I'm reasonably happy with the custom components I built the bike up with (especially the Hayes Comp brakes and XTR shifters/derailleur). It really is a great trailbike, even moreso now that I've gotten more familiar with how it rides. This is a trail bike, though, definitely not a freeride frame.

I find now that I don't really need a lockout on the rear shock - the bike pedals very well without a lockout.

In terms of pedalling efficiency, it still compares very favourably to everything else out there in its class, and even stacks up well against the newer (2002 model) refined efficiency bikes (e.g. Rocky Mountain ETSX-70) but has more travel than most of the others. From several short tests of the Specialized Enduro models, I found that it rides quite similarly (similar suspension plushness and comparable bobbing efficiency), although it does weigh a bit more.

I am really happy with the 2002 Pyslo SL fork - I did get the stiffer spring upgrade as my body weight seemed to warrant it. Now it feels more like a Marzocchi, and the travel adjustment and compression/rebound damping and lockout work very well.
Weaknesses:A bit of seatpost creak that I can't quite pin down and locate, nor entirely get rid of. No apparent cracks or weld problems with the frame that I can find, however, so I think it's ok.

I would really prefer it if the 2001 i-Drive eccentrics had been designed to be sealed better against mud, water and sand - it is a real chore to have to tear it apart, clean it and re-pack the bearings and other components.

I have had to get the rear (SID) shock serviced, as the negative air chamber began to leak all of its air pressure after about 8 months of use. About 3 weeks turnaround time, and I was back in business for about $75(CDN)including shipping charges. Rock Shox recommends keeping the shock ultra-clean to help prevent this problem. I'll pay more attention to this from now on.

My biggest disappointment has not been with the frame, but
with my custom-picked bottom bracket (Race Face Signature XS - ISIS drive). Apparently they had some manufacturing problems with the cups, and the end result was that my BB kept coming loose. Once they were notified about my chronic problem, however, Race Face sent brand new BB cups to me (free of charge and pretty quickly), which seems to have resolved the issue.

Similar Products Used:Specialized Enduro (2002 Pro, Expert), Rocky Mountain ETS X-70, Rocky Mountain Slayer (2002).
Bike Setup:Custom-build - same as my earlier review (see below), except: changed the rear cogset to Shimano XT (11-34 tooth) - the SRAM 9.0 cogs bent when a little twig wrapped around them. I was not impressed. I've also added a Blackspire Big Ring Protector to the big chainring for that extra comfort getting over obstacles.
Bottom Line:I still love this bike.

Strengths:Components for the price paid. Psylo is really plush and is nice over small and big hits. SID's dual air lets the rider get that oh-so-perfect ride on the rough stuff. Time pedals, can't be beat.
Weaknesses:Psylo, stiff as a wet noodle. GT hubs, they just sucked. Syncros stem, whenever I crash, it always gets knocked out of place, even when its really cranked down. This gets annoying when racing.
Similar Products Used:Cannondale Jekyl, Rocky Mountain Element
Bike Setup:XT shifters, hubs, rear brake and front derailure. Cannondale bar(POS). ControlTech bar ends.
Bottom Line:Great bike for trail riding and light freeriding, I am considering racing Dual Slalom with it. Not a great bike for XC racing, which I do. Holds up well, but the shock mounts come loose often and the bottom braket and be very difficult when just a little, and continues to get worse as it gets wetter and wetter, not good for races in the rain.

Bottom Line:The bike performs great. Came with quality componets.
Unfortunately...after about 4 months of use. The welds on the frame below the seat have started to go.
The bike is creaking and ready to go anyday now.
I luckily found a 3.0 frame which is of the same type.

The bike overall is still a good deal due to most of the componets it came with.

Hope all the frames out there aren't like this!

Strengths:Climbs better than my hardtail; Soaks up the rough stuff on the trail; Fits like it was custom built for me.
Weaknesses:A tad on the heavy side; GT isn't really GT anymore (but then again, that's why I got such a great deal on the bike).
Similar Products Used:Trek Fuel, Giant NRS, Fisher Sugar, Cannondale Jekyl & Scalpel
Bike Setup:Stock, except for a new Body Geometry saddle
Bottom Line:This bike has made me love mountain biking again. The bike literally climbs better than my hardtail. The active suspension while climbing allows the bike to maintain better traction. All this and no pedal-bob.

I looked at other bikes where you can lock-out the suspension, but that seems idiotic. Why would you want to flip a switch every time you're going up or down a hill? I want the suspension active all the time and the i-Drive makes this possible.

Then there's the other solution for rear suspension which eliminates pedal-bob by simply making the suspesion so stiff that seem to have no suspension at all (Giant, Trek, etc.). The i-Drive is plush all the time and eliminates the wasted energy of the dreaded "bob".

I hope they keep making this bike (in some form) because it really is a great design. If you can find one, buy it!!

Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $3425.00
Purchased At:Gerick Cycles, Kelowna, B.C.(Frame only) - components from PricePoint & Overlander Sports, YK
Strengths:Excellent trailbike. Superb handling at high speed and over technical terrain. An instant confidence booster compared with my hardtail, but with a subtlety that takes some time to develop an appreciation for. Climbs very well, and much better than my hardtail, even though it's a heavier bike. GT had a winner with this design and I sincerely hope Pacific Bicycles will not compromise the quality, parts availability and further research and development on the i-Drive concept. With a few improvements, I am confident this design could stay on top of the trailbike/enduro market for a long time.
Weaknesses:#1)GT is not being carried by Norco in Canada this year (2002), because of the recent takeover by Pacific Bicycles. This means that replacement parts - i.e. replacement bushings and bearings for the suspension pivots (including the i-Drive eccentric and dogbone assembly) currently seem to be impossible to get in Canada. If Pacific is now offering replacement parts to their GT customers again, my suggestion is that they put this information on the GT website, along with all required contact information for people to order parts. It is very frustrating that they seem to not be reachable at present.

(#2) Replaceable cartridge bearings (rather than bushings) would have been a better design for the suspension pivots. I would have gladly paid a higher purchase price for those improvements, if they are technically feasible.

(#3) While I have not had any problems at all with the frame to date, having read all the other reviews plus RC's comments on the MBAction.com website, I am somewhat fearful of frame breakage. I feel as though I will have to baby this frame to make it last.

(#4) I would prefer to have the lockout feature on the SID rear shock. On hard climbs over smoother terrain, the suspension bobs enough to be a noticeable detractor from the "feel" of the bike's performance (maybe I'm just too used to hardtails). The lockout feature would fix this problem entirely.

I would like to see GT/Pacific put a technical manual available for download on their website - this would answer a bunch a questions I have about rear suspension/pivot maintenance.

Similar Products Used:Tested the GIANT NRS-1, Rocky Mountain Slayer, Rocky Mountain Edge, Specialized Enduro Pro, Santa Cruz Superlite, Cannondale Jekyl 800, and the Kona Bear. From my perspective, the Giant was the only full-suspension design with superior efficiency while under hard pedalling, but it lacked the plushness of my GT's suspension, for understandable reasons (i.e. the NRS is built primarily as a XC racer, not a trailbike). So from my perspective, the only two bikes that even came close (from a rideability perspective) were the Cannondale and the Specialized. My criteria: I'm not a freerider (too old and fragile), so I am less concerned about having big hit capability and more concerned about pedalling efficiency while still having a decent amount of suspension travel (front and rear) and a decent overall weight. I would love to test the new Rocky Mountain ETS X-70 model to compare, but so far, the GT compares very favourably against everything I've tried.
Bike Setup:Custom build: Medium-size frame, Rockshox Psylo SL(2002 model), Race Face Turbine LP crankset and chainrings, Race Face Signature XS bottom bracket, Shimano XTR chain, SRAM 9.0 cogset (11-34), Shimano XT Disc hubs, XTR shifters, XTR rear derailleur, Hayes Comp hydraulic brakes, Easton EA-50(1 and 1/2") riser bars, Yeti Grips with ODI locking rings, Thomson seatpost (31.6mm), Thomson stem (90mm, 5 degree), Sun Rhynolite welded and machined rims, Panaracer Pyro Suspension XC tires, Specialized Comp saddle, Axiom flat pedals, Lizard Skin forkboots and shockboot, Roach Chainstay guard. The only stock component is the Rockshox SID rear shock (no lockout).
Bottom Line:I absolutely love this bike. It is a superb ride for people seeking a very efficient but very plush full-suspension trailbike. The cockpit is quite short, which is the way I like it, but it is definitely not a racing setup, nor is it light enough to race - look at the GIANT NRS-1 if that's what you want to do. While I could have built the bike lighter - the overall weight is about 31 lbs with the heaviier rims and tires which I feel are needed for the rocky terrain around Yellowknife - the bike pedals light and feels light, even on hard, long climbs.

With a rear lockout for those long, smoother surface climbs, the rideability of this bike would be as close to perfection as I can imagine. It initially feels very tall when mounting up, but once you get going, the feeling disappears. The standover clearance could use some improvement for riders my height (5' 9"), but it's not a big deal.

I got the frame itself at a very good price, so I give the bike itself 5 flamin' chilis in both value and for the overall rating, even though it could be improved with cartridge bearings on the suspension pivots, and by strengthening the frame at the critical spots, and possibly by exerting better quality control. Maybe Easton's tubing would be better suited for use on this bike?

I just wish GT/Pacific's support would be there for needed replacement parts and potential warranty requirements, and to produce future high quality i-Drive models with the improvements I listed above. If there were a separate rating on this website for product support, I would not be giving Pacific a good rating until I see some proof they'll start supporting GT's past products with replacement parts and technical documentation.

Strengths:Rides nice, doesnt bob.
Weaknesses:The friggen frame's thickness. Cause the i drive mechanics are so heavy gt decided to make all the tubeing wicked thin, especialy the seat stay. I had one frame break on me at the seat stay, and the replacement frame also broke at the exact same place. And they happend during normal circumstances that normal bikes should be able to take.
Bottom Line:The frame is bad. Gt has been bought out, they only serve 1 year warranties now, so be carefull. Their customer service sucks. I wish it was lighter but it is the frame. The brakes work great (Avid Mag's). I used a set of Arch Rivals and the Mag's definitely out did the Arch's. I only felt bobbing when I pedaled quickly and very hard (standing up). I would give is 5 flaming chilis if it was lighter. Great bike though. Definitely am pleased with it.

Weaknesses:Frame, it has held up for me except for when my friend picked it up, he held real hard and bent part of the top tube, that sucks. The rear Sid doesn't have lockout, that would be helpful cause when I'm quad jamming, it bobs A LOT!

Strengths:This was a great bike for the first three weeks i had it.
Weaknesses:Then one day i was in a race at lake fontana and i was on the sixth mile of an 8 mile race just coming off of a downhill section getting ready for a long uphill trek when i fell off of a berm. It wasnt a major fall just a few scratches on my face and elbows from it but when i got up to get on the bike my first thought was that i had bent the seatpost. I couldnt get it straight but i was in fourth place so quickly hopped back on the bike to finish up the race. Then i finished it and all and after getting some water i looked more closely at the frame and on the part right above the rear shock the whole frame was bent to the right. Thus causing the seatpost to point to the right. I contacted my local bikeshop Bio-Wheels and got them to look at it and the problem was a poor welding on that part of the bike. I havent heard from GT's "warranty department" but they said that i was still going to have to pay for it which is not cool. I am very dissatisfied with GT's handling of this situation.

Weaknesses:HUBS, HUBS, HUBS...I've ridden the bike for less than 6 months and I kept breaking drive side spokes on rear wheel...because the rear axle had broken!!!!! The seat SUCKS!!!! Riser bars....much better for climbing with flat bars. Tires have very limited area of performance. Crappy grips....Frame dents easily

Bottom Line:I LOVE THIS BIKE!!!! It is fast, and very nimble in all conditions. I've ridden a hardtail for almost 7 years and this took a little getting used to but OH MY GOD is this thing SWEET!! I am having a problem right now though...I kept breaking rear spokes for no apparent reason (first one was while making a turn on a paved bike trail!!) so I took it back in and the shop discovered that I had split my rear axle...already. Well, Pacific Bikes (GT's new owners) apparently going to send me a new wheelset (NOT GT!!) of equal or better quality as a replacement. They are not yet totally aware of what parts they have in stock for GT bikes because of inventory issues with the new "merger." Aside from the corporate problems of GT I still stand behind my bike despite my current problems. I haven't had so much fun on a bike in a long time until I bought this one...I have always loved this sport, but now....This bike has taken it to another level!!!! As far as the frame denting...I tried to pass a buddy on a climb and we locked bar ends and fell over...I ended up underneath him and his handlebar struck my downtube...and left a noticeable dent...not terribly bad, but a dent nonetheless. I'll have to rate the value rating a little low because I didn't buy man online so I paid full retail and for 2 grand I would have expected better hubs...but I had to say at least one thing bad or I would sound like a GT factory rep. :>
This bike is an excellent choice for a "mature" rider who has been riding long enough to have developed a "technique" and a thorough understanding of handling skills. This bike WILL make up for the lack of experience in most situations, but in the hands of an experienced rider....I can't even speculate the possibilities!!!!

But if you have the money, this is one of the best bikes you can get and is also one of the best deals. Very high quality. Gets a little loose here and there but if you have a good dealer to toon it up then you can keep it is good shape. Everyone talks about how great the i-drive is but i can't reall feel the difference. If rides really great and smooth though, accelerates good and is pretty light. But still it doesn't have 100% perfect componets so i'm only giving it 4 flamin' chilis overall. Bottom line: It is a great bike for the money ever at MSRP. Plus it rides awsome.

I rode it side by side against the Giant, Specialized, etc, and no matter how many times I did it always came out on top, so I decided to go for it, and am I ever glad I did! I love this bike! Climbs great. Silky smooth on the downhills. Tight in the corners. Plenty of BB clearance. Every time I ride this bike I love it more. Very solid frame construction. Bottom Line:This is the best FS ride I've ever tried! The i-drive eliminates the typical FS cross-country problem of pogo - it's an engineer's dream (Well, this engineer's, anyway).

Amazing ride on cross-country, just as incredible on downhill... this bike is a joy to ride.

Two primary concerns:
XT Splined BB is wearing prematurely... creaks and clicks. A 190# rider shouldn't kill a BB in 6 months of XC riding! I haven't heard of similar failures, so hopefully mine was just a bum part off the line.

The GT disc-ready hubs are horribly weak. I actually sheared my rear hub in half! Had I not known from MTBR reviews that the hubs were garbage, I would have been pretty furious. The sub-par hubs are the only component where GT cut a corner when spec'ing this bike. Everything else has performed flawlessly.

I'm upgrading to XT disc hubs and Avid mechanicals... will post an update in a few months. The stock brakes are awesome -- a little noisy, but plenty of stopping power. Only "upgrading" to the heavier discs because I'm moving to an area with rain and mud.

Despite some mechanical problems this is still the best all-around FS bike I've ridden. Buy it, upgrade the hubs immediately, and love it.

The suspension provides a Cadillac like ride, while it can outclimb my hardtail!! You can even stand-up and pedal on this bike up a tough climb on loose ground without spinning your rear wheel! A real "point and shoot" bike. What I mean is - where and when I use to get into trouble on very steep and/or technical stuff on my Specialized hardtail, this bike just goes thru it effortlessly. A great buy. In my opinion, it does need alittle upgrading here and there (see above), but you cannot go wrong buying one of these. I great bike for cross-country to downhill riding.

Climbs pretty good (flat xc bar could help that), descends like a champ, is fun for all kinds of trails (paved trails, Urban Assaults, XC/technical riding, and free riding). Make sure that the bolts that hold the dog-bone link are tight, if they aren't, remove, grease, replace. That will keep that part in good shape. Strengths:If your a cross country rider, you will love this bike! It sits up high, 100mm front fork travel, 4.6" of travel in the back make for a very smooth comfortable ride.

I had a trek 8000 hardtail before this and its night and day. The gt took some getting use to at first, its definitely a bit heavier than I expected and may seem slow at first. I still cant climb as good as the trek can.
On the downhills though..see you later if your on a HT.
My body feels great after 3 hours of riding. The HT always killed my back..

I could not say no to the price. The bike comes with good componets for the price.
Weaknesses:Get rid of those riser bars! The bikes high enough as it is.

The bike is a bit heavy compared to other FS I've tried. But much more comfortable and better suspensioned from the specialized and cannondales I rode recently.
This is not the best racer..its a great cross country bike.

I took off the time pedals. You'll either like'em or hate'em. I hate them..I just could not clip out of them easily enough. The WTB tires suck also. The side walls are not durable.

Warranty work maybe a problem with GT being bought recently.

No warranty for the frame. But at this price..who cares...

It also wont fit on my bike rack on the trunk due to the rear suspension design. Keep this in mind!

Bike Setup:Marzocchi Z.1MCR, Fox Float RC. Shimano XT everything, WTB Motoraptors 2.4
Bottom Line:I love the way the bike performs. I has alot of rear wheel travel(4.6") for a cross country bike, and yet climbs very well. The bike is very smooth over big and small bumps due to the Marzocchi Bomber and the Fox rear shock. I can say I will never ride a GT again only because I have broken two frames in less than a year. Don't worry about the SID rear shock...you're going to save enough money on the price of the bike to replace the shock if it dies.

On personal fit.... this is a very TALL bike, especially the front end. I usually ride moderately technical single track and a little XC. I like my bars the same height as my saddle, maybe a little lower. If you're the same you'll want to chuck the Syncros stem and possibly the handle bars too. Just be prepared to cut your fork steering tube if you put on any other stem. I took an inch off mine just by switching to a Thompson stem. Also, cockpit is a little small so 130mm stem helped.

Don't buy this bike if:
You are an overpaid superficial vain cycleweenie that thinks spending over $3000 on a bike makes you a better rider.

This bike is really fun to ride. I am 210# so I chose to replace the front and rear suspension with better aftermarket products. The Z1 and Stratos w/ lock out is a perfect match for this bike. I sold the OEM suspension parts on ebay before I even used them and put the $ towards the new shock and fork. I still came out of the deal spending only $1500!! And that is with XTR, XT, LX components!! Look at any other brand model with those specs and upgraded suspension parts and you are looking at $2500 easy.

The bike is fun to rise up or down. I am constantly getting compliments on it and my butt is not sore at the end of the day. If you want a great bike for a great price, give this a test ride.

Strengths:Almost everything.
Weaknesses:Maybe a bit too much weight cut from parts of the frame. Very basic headset and chain, hubs are an unknown quality and stem and bars aren't great.
Bike Setup:Stock
Bottom Line:Not the lightest, but an excellent all-rounder. Pity about that bile green! So far I’ve had none of the problems others have had with the size small frame, but the sheet alloy that makes up the seat post mount seems disturbingly thin. Actually the main downtube is as well since its very easy to dent - the cost of trying to counter the i-drive bulk I guess. The i-drive system seems excellent - as reviews have pointed out, its a subtle system which you don’t really appreciate it till you realise what you can ride over. The i-drive/bottom bracket seems well sealed for minimum maintenance but sits quite high - puts your weight high which can be a hassle for some slow technical stuff for those with short legs. Suspension components and Time pedals are brilliant, as is the drivetrain (XT shifters on the Euro spec models) although the chain itself is Shimano’s most basic 9-speed model. Also a very basic headset. In contrast, the Formula B4 Hydraulic brakes are excellent - standard on the Euro spec models. The hubs are labeled GT but apparently are Formula made. I found the freewheel mechanism full of water after about a month - the seal in the freewheel side of the rear is either useless or an O-ring was missing but I found an O-ring to do the job and its been ok since - still, its an area of poor design. The other seals seem fine and the hubs are otherwise holding out ok. The SDG saddle looks torturous yet is remarkably comfortable, but the Syncros stem and bar are negatives - too little back sweep an no sweep up in the bar, and the steerer clamp of the stem is a pain in the arse to get tight enough. Overall, a great bike which seems to handle it all and makes every ride a blast.

Strengths:Nice paint, relatively light, Psylo fork/SID XC shock, nice Shimano driveline bits. Good ground clearance is also a plus. Also very happy with the dealer, Bicycle Centre in Everett.
Weaknesses:Brakes, shortish top tube, saddle, less than grippy tires. QR's seem a little chinsy, but seem to work okay.
Similar Products Used:None. It's my first full-suspension bike.
Bike Setup:Stock, except for Azonic A-Frame pedals, Raceface XY seatpost, WTB saddle, Kool-Stop pads. Added a THE XC fender for "style points".
Bottom Line:While there a few things I would change, overall, it's a great bike. It's a nice climber, it rides great, and handles well.

On the negative side, the Avid Ti's are disappointing, making an upgrade to discs a forgone conclusion. The Kool-Stop pads have helped, but again, they're only a bandaid until I get discs. I test rode the bike with the SDG saddle, and knew immediately it wasn't for me. I replaced it with my old faithful WTB saddle. The shortish top tube didn't bother me until after I'd ridden it a bit. The addition of the RaceFace XY post has fixed that problem. The Moto Raptor tires are okay, but are less than confidence inspiring in loose dirt or damp conditions.

In conclusion, I love the bike. It's neat looking, works great, and (due to the deal I got) I feel lucky to own one.

Strengths:The bike is great, it climbs like a hardtail and downhills very well too. The I-drive works flawlessly. It is a heavy bike but once you are riding it, it is nimble and quick, basically a point and shoot bike. I was a very successful BMX racer and it has the GT quality I have come to know over the years. The brakes are just great, even in mud they still do their job very well. The Psylo is plush and soaks up everything you throw at it.
Weaknesses:The tres suck for hardpack and mud, changed them for velocirraptors and it now handles like a charm. The bars were also crap, they have a weird bend, switched them for some taper lites and it feels much better. Also swapped the stem for a shorter one and it helped the handling a lot. Of course I like a more BMX oriented feel, so this might not help you. The Psylo comes with to soft springs for my weight (75 kilos) maybe they should go with stiffer ones.

Frame breakage has not been a concern, I have done 5-7 foot drop offs no problem, and dowhilled into large rocks and boulders. I give it 4 flaming turds, not five just because of the crap tires and bars. If you rde hard and wan't an all around good bike, say downhill, free riding and just plain old weekend riding instead of having 3 or 4 different bikes, this is the bike for you!

Strengths:Plush ride and the ability to roll over rocky technical terrain. Overall weight of 28 lbs. is competitive with other bikes with 4" - 5" travel front and rear. Excellent downhill and quite good as a climber.
Weaknesses:WTB rims are difficult to get tires on/off.
SDG seat not the most comfortable.
Psylo SL fork had to be returned to Rockshox to have bushings replaced.
Color - I just can't get used to the Green/Black color scheme. Wish there was another option.
Frame breakage. I have never broken one but have heard of others who have had problems with broken frames in the area of the seat post tower.
Similar Products Used:Santa Cruz Heckler, Giant AC2, Giant XTC NRS, Sepcialized FSR, GT LTS-2, Titus
Bike Setup:Standard except I have added Salsa break boosters front and rear and replaced the front 2.1 motoraptor with a 2.1 Tioga Extreme XC.
Bottom Line:I ride other fs bikes whenever I get a chance but still have not found one that meets my requirements as completely as the I-Drive.

To date, the bike has been excellent but all the reports of frame breakage I've read about do give me some concern.

Would I buy another? Not sure because of the fore mentioned breakage reports. I'm confident that GT would take care of any problems under warranty but it is still a concern.

Strengths:Psylo fork, rear suspension, great ride and great gearing. Handles great, climbs very well, blasts down hill.
Weaknesses:Saddle killed my rear, had to change it right away. Handlebars are too wide. Needed bar ends. Time pedals take some getting used to.
Similar Products Used:Had a Proflex Animal from 96. Tested Giant NTC and Trek Fuel 90. Giant a great buy, but doesn't ride as well
Bike Setup:Stock except for seat and probably will put on flat handlebar.
Bottom Line:Got a great deal at Westlake Cyclery. Bike is awesome. I climbed over some tough, technical single track that no one else would even tackle. It just goes over rough stuff down hill without a problem. The Psylo is wonderful, soaks up big hits and the lockout is very good. I found the front end sometimes pulls up on very steep climbs if I have the fork locked out, but it doesn't come up when the fork is left active. The rear suspension soaks up bumps well. No bobbing. I don't think there is the need for a rear lockout. I can ride up, and down, much faster than before. I have had it just over a week and have over 80 miles on it. Done some serious trails. Very comfortable with different seat, and blows away other bikes. It feels heavy to lift, but rides light. Brakes are good, too. A friend has the Hayes discs, but I did not like them. The Avids have strong grip. So far, no problems. The Giant and Fuel have similar suspensions to each other and ride much rougher than the GT. No hard tail can touch this bike. Those who complain about its weight haven't ridden it uphill. The 9 speed lets me stay in the middle ring longer, and thus I am faster than friends in the small ring. Handles tight turns well. Had a problem with the Time pedals at first. They were hard to get out of, but once I realized it and lubed them, they were fine.

Strengths:handling, suspension action, suspension adjustability, xt splined cranks, disc-ready
Weaknesses:crappy qrs; cheapo cassette & chain (no big deal to replace); mushy rear brake
Similar Products Used:demo'd: ellsworth truth, spec fsr, rocket 88. This is bike #6 in my garage.
Bike Setup:stock - will upgrade to xt discs, add salsa qrs, and replace cassette, chain, shifters w/ xt when they wear out
Bottom Line:Don't think the negatives listed degrade the overall ride of this puppy. Just thinking about my hawg makes me want to bail my stress-factory job and ride all day and night. This bike is incredibly fun to ride! This is my first dually and I did a LOT of research before I laid down the cash. The handling is amazing, both in technical stuff and in the really fast stuff. Even at warp 9 through parallel ruts and cobbles it's on rails. Climbing is great traction-wise...I haven't been stymied yet on stuff that's on the edge of my ability. There is virtually no pedal-induced bobbing. Sure, it's a porker (mine, stock, is a solid 29 lbs, size L) but it doesn't matter. It rides light and if I don't want to deal with it, I hop on my 23 lb hardtail. The only things I hate are the mushy rear brake and the stupid GT qrs...they spent the cash on the SID shock (very nice) and the phenomenal Psylo SL. I almost didn't buy this hawg because of the RS products, but they are so far, so good. If you want a bike to do it all, this is it! I would recommend it to anyone who has spent the time learning how to ride up to a fairly high level to really appreciate the ability of the chassis. It rides like a hardtail suspended by a 4 inch cushion of air.

Purchased At:Westside Schwinn
Strengths:I-drive, climbing, Psylo fork, crank, looks, whole package.
Weaknesses:Afraid to break it! This does not look like a well constructed frame. The welds are not straight and the paint ran a little on the down tube. Not terribly stable on high speed decents (due to wheelbase), but makes up for it being so nimble on switchbacks and technical riding.
Similar Products Used:Moab 2, Klein attitude comp
Bike Setup:Mavic 517w/XT hubs. Easton flat carbon bars.
Bottom Line:I've heard so much about people bending and cracking frames but my dealer (very reputable) said they have never seen a problem on one so I try not to worry about it. This is the only FS bike I could find with a psylo, mag brakes, XT crank, lots of plush suspension travel and what I feel is the most durable suspension design. Time will tell, but if I have one problem with the frame I'll be furious. I just expect a lot when I drop 2 grand on a BICYCLE. This is however a fantastic bike and has taken my riding to a whole new level of fun.

Strengths:The suspention design works like a dream to soak up roots and rocks. Holds a line very well. It climbs very well, most of the time I don't ever get out of the saddle even for the most technical climbs The idrive system works like a champ.
Weaknesses:Unfortunatley there were a few weak points about it. I have so far had a cracked rear hub(3 weeks no bike) GT replaced whole rear wheel. Bent the frame at the top rear shock mount( 1 month no bike) GT replaced with a TEAM LE frame WOOHOO! A blown negative seal on the SID rear shock (2 weeks no bike).GT replaced with a new SID. I'm pretty sure the SID failed because of the stress caused by the frame bending. I weigh 200lb, I did ask if I was too heavy for the frame and was told no by the LBS , still a little sceptical since I did manage to bend my frame on a small drop (1.5 to 2ft drop) Maybe it was a fluke or something. Last but not least the Psylo SL fork is very plush, but makes more noise than a busted chainsaw. (Rock Shock says this is normal because of the type of fork it is.) Uh yeah right! Anyway these things happen sometimes I guess, it is just frustrating to spend so much time waiting around and only get a ride or two in before the next problem. On a good note the bike has been out of the shop for a little over a month and it's all holding together very well at the moment.

Bike Setup:psylo sl fork, sid rear xc shock, SDG saddle, WTB laser beam rims, XT hollow tech cranks, XTR r derailer, LX f derailer, LX rapid fire shifters, TIME attack alum. pedals, syncros post, stem, and bars. Bike is pretty much stock still with the exception of the front tire( old speacialized team control, still love this tire) and the fact that I have an LE frame now instead of the 2.0 frame. Plan on changing out the bars ,stem and headset very soon.
Bottom Line:Now that all the defects and bugs have been worked out it is one of the best FS bikes I've ever riden. If I had it to do all over again I might not pick GT as my first choice. This time around I did because it seemed to be a very well rounded bike for xc rider who likes to hit some jumps and drops every once in a while. Being that I live in Florida a very flat state, the GT should do just fine for now. If you are thinking of freeriding on this bike think again. Unless you only weigh in at about 150 or less you will probably be bending frames just like I did. The real bottom line is this is still a great cross country bike I'm just still a little pissed about spending what is a lot of money to me on a quality bike and having all this down time.

Strengths:Bike is strong all around; climbs great for a FS, yet the rear SID and long travel psylo invite huge drops. Coming from a BMX background way back when, this is one tight bike.
I am happy with the AVIDS, may upgrade to hydraulics eventually, but right now these puppies seem to do just fine. However in my research I noticed that the 2.0 comes stock with them in Europe...
General componentry outfit works well for an all around FS/XC bike.
Weaknesses:Syncros stem - within the first month I cracked the endcap, why they went with plastic to shave minimal grams is beyond me. I am on number two right now, and am quite conscious about the torque at all times.
Only other major upgrade was from the TIME ATACs to Shimano 646s - not so much for downhilling but for me it is nice to hit a jump head on and not be attached to 27-lbs of aluminum - as well as have clip-in capability. The TIMEs did their job, pretty easy in and out, but I prefer the best of both worlds.
Similar Products Used:Trek 6000, FSR demoed.
Bike Setup:Stock except Shimano M646 pedals and IRC Mythos tires
Bottom Line:Great bike if you have the cash and are looking for a nice tight ride. Performs well in all conditions (including flat pavement - I did a bike-a-thon through NYC, locked out the front shock and increased pressure in the rear SID, and it served me well. Especially passing the road-bikes walking their bikes up the hills). Front der. requires frequent tuning, XTR would be a well received upgrade on the stock setup, but the back functions perfectly.
Handles tight tracks, big jumps, and is super in sand. All around fast bike, with the great i-drive technology (when set up properly) and great dial-in ability to personalize your ride.
Value is 4 burning torpedos (want more XTR for the $ and maybe a better rim/brakeset)
Overall is 5.
They say that mountain biking is 90% rider and 10% bike; I feel confident that this bike is between my legs making up that 10%.

Strengths:Fun bike...Oh yeah. Fast on downhills. Buttery smooth rear suspension. handles well in air. Cool handlebar.
Weaknesses:Mass. Psylo fork not quite as plush as my Z1 on my old stumpy. Psylo seems too tall (I have it set at 4" of travel, and I measure it 3/4 in taller than my Z1.
The hubs (I think they are formula, under the "GT highside disc" label) and wheelbuilding on this thing suck. My rear wheel went out of true after about 3 rides. The spokes are too skinny ad flimsy. Then, the freehub went bad after less than 200 miles. It took the dealer 1 month to get another one. Lame. I finally got a completely new rear wheel. Now the freehub seems to be acting up again (I've ridden about 500 miles on it). I think I'll just buy a good rear wheel/hub.

Weaknesses:SDG Satellite saddle
Similar Products Used:Just about all FS and hardtails demo'd
Bike Setup:stock except for Serfas Dual Density saddle and Panaracer tires
Bottom Line:Over 500 miles, and the bike has been pretty flawless. The saddle was hard as a rock and not very good for rides over an hour, the tires wouldn't grip on the sand-over-hardpack
prevalent on the trails here. But those were easy fixes. The I-drive system does its job. The bike could be lighter, but at a true 27 lbs for a large frame full suspension for $2000 (I've seen it for as little as $1699), and long travel front forks is pretty damn good. Time will tell if I see any weakness problems with the frame at the seatpost like other people have had, but so far it is ok. Make sure to get the rear fender/mudflap included on the bike. Mine didn't come with one, but all of the bikes in the shops now have them. It would go a long way in keeping the trail crap off of the rear suspension and front derailleur. I'm having a hard time getting one as GT says they are out of them.
