Bottom Line:
The only original parts are the seat post and stem. The tires and chain sucked, those were the first things off the bike, (chain first) then came the shifters and cassette. The fork, shock and wheeelset were OK for the price of the bike. Over all the stock bike was great once I changed the chain and tires it rode well. It took a lot of pounding, and had a plush ride, good handling skills. I changed the wheelset and put on disc's big change of control when you stop on a dime, then I changed the fork and shock it turned into a great ride. I'm not a racer, but I like to ride in comfort, do long rides and the downhills in N.C. , climbs well, it's good all around the bike with it's changes has kept me happy since Jan. 2000 that's a month away from 5 years. It's not on the market any more but if you can find an old frame it's well worth buying. The biggest change in shifting came in the chain replacement, after that the parts that come stock are OK for the price of the bike. BIG THUMBS UP FOR THE OLD BIKE

Same as the rest of the reviews, sweet frame. I-Drive is great. I like the front suspension. I do 3-4 foot drops every now and then and I bottom it out once in a while. You don't want a super stiff suspension. This is a nice one, better than Judy's. Nice looking bike (scuba yellow), I always get complements.

Great bike for the person who doesn't like it when their bikes break. The only thing you may have to replace are the derailleurs, the rest should last a long time. Great bike for the price. I like the stock fork. Next upgrade will be new rims (after almost 3 years of riding they will be replaced).
Great bike to slowly upgrade.
THE BAD THING IS: GT bankruptcy. Hard time finding derailleur hangers now!!!

This bike rocks! I personaly love it. When first bought, it had some pretty crapy components on it. I rode it how it was for about 5 months, and they were all dead. Ive totaly rebuilt my bike and now the only original part on it is the frame. But even before I rebuilt it, this bike could take anything I put infront of it. I put about $500 into it and I love it. If you are looking for a nice mountain bike for those weekend rides, this is the bike for you. Put some money into it and you will have yourself a great bike. Take My word for it.

7.0 brakes and grip shift and 9.0 rear derailer when I bought it. Since then, I have broken 4 rear derailleurs, the rear wheel, the crankset, the bottom bracket, one brake. Replaced with 2 more 9.0 rear deraileurs, then a 7.o because I couldn't afford any more 9.0s, Rhino rear wheel w/deore hub, LX crankset.
Bottom Line:
This bike has broken more times in the two years I have owned it than my $350 GT Tempest has broken since '96. I don't know if SRAM's derailleurs are weak or if the frame flex causes it. None of the deraileurs broke during a wreck, only while pedeling on a flat trail. I can see the bottom bracket flex a half inch when I crank down on it. The I drive has developed a looseness which makes a clunking noise while riding. Really annoying. I like the ride alot, but I find my self riding my old hard tail because something breaks on the XCR every other time I ride it (which screws up my ride and costs more $$$). If any one knows a fix for that clunk in the I drive, let me know. The Bike shop can't help it.

Says so right on me frame!!! no not designed in usa, made in usa. Its a great bike, kinda heavy, but very upgradeable and the idrive rules. Just hope pacific will keep making parts for it. I speak only for the frame. Tough ass frame! I've smashed the thing on rails and not a dent. Soaks up big hits very well (5ft+). Love the I-Drive no problems. Good ride all around feel safe on the DH. Don't mind the uphill comments you hear about, it's the components that make it suck uphill. I climb up hill without a problem since I got new components.
Weaknesses:
Components are total crap. If you ride any style tougher than sidewalks with occasional sticks, your going to be due for a component make over. Expect to put about 400.00 worth of used parts into it. Rims are not tough, you will have to change the rear rim, or true it everyday. Stock panaracer tires suck. Gears try to destroy you with their worth crap strength. Brakes are fine but will rub against the total waste of metal, rear rim. Don't get me wrong it will last you for a about 2 months. Pedals suprisingly seem to last though it scares me to have plastic. The front/rear shocks I feel are worth what I paid for the bike no disappointment their. The bike is heavy, but I like the beef for taking the hits. GT OUT OF BUSINESS, DAMN!
Bike Setup:
Had Acera components changed over to SRAM 9.0 and Avid Mechanicals. Also changed the for junk rim with a WTB. I also changed the cheap Panaracers for a Michelin Wildgripper.
Bottom Line:
Get this bike! and put the extra investment into it. You'll have lots of fun with it. I give it 5 chilis because for the money you pay, it makes up for the components. For something I paid 600.00 for two years ago, is making me very happy this year for only another 400.00. The bottom line... " I HAVE FUN WITH THIS BIKE! "

The I-Drive works great, standing on the pedals will kick you off like a hard tail. The high positioning needs to get use to at the beginning. You should upgrade most of the components, but wait until they brake down and then replace them for a better quality. Replace tha Acera front derailleur and shifters ASAP, that will improve gear shiftting. This is a very good bike for having fun. All you need to do is keep the excillent frame and upgrade according to your needs.

Weaknesses:
The stock Velo seat hurts!. It is so uncomfortable, I have to stand up for the entire ride. The flaky front derailleur will have to go on the next upgrade. Suntour fork mushy. A little heavy going uphill, but not a big deal. Handlebar too wide.

Good looks, good looks, good looks .. and good looks! I initially bought the bike thinking that was the only reason to get it, but I've been nothing but pleased with it otherwise. It has taken me down some crazy hills and rode fast x-country. The frame itself isn't exactly light, but add the components that it comes stock with and it's a bit hefty. I vowed to ride like mad since I got it (and have), and knew that upgrades would be the key to making it what I wanted. So, a few hundred.. or maybe a thousand $$ more, I have my dream. If you can get your hands on one, and your not quite sure that you want to ride alot and yet have a good bike for the $, this is the deal.
Weaknesses:
I vaguely remember that there was a SR Suntour fork and some goofy little rear shock? Oh, yeah, I got rid of those :) The rims were a little heavy and not too sturdy from the git-go.. replaced the tires with something lighter (get the Panaracer Fire XC PRO w/ the yellow sidewalls.. it looks tight!)

Bottom Line:
Bottom line? This thing obviously rocks now. Sure, I spent a bunch more mulah to get it there, but heck, when I bought it, it suited my needs to the t, and I didn't expect anything more of it. It is a good frame at least to start off with, and if you get serious about riding, the basis for the bike is there, and you can just make it to your liking from there on. For all the whiners of the Suntour and rear shock, just buy another shock. I doubt any of us bought the bike thinking that, and what can you expect for so little investment and such great upgradablity. I'm biased, sure, but I love my GT.

The bike is a joy to ride, I've put over 150 miles on it in the month I've owned it, all easy stuff though, need to find people to show me some 'real' trails. But the bike goes off curbs, 2-3 ft drops with no real trouble (bent back rim a bit on a 3 footer, spoke wrench and 5 mins fixed it though, I was on the seat on the landing). All in all, a great bike from a great company, I would recommend to anyone on a budget. Great value, -1 chili for the suntour components.

I've decided to try one of these suspension xc bikes for the fun of it. My wife and I will be hitting the backwoods trails around wisconsin this summer. I bought her a "comfort" bike "Trek" for valentines. The GT was purchased for me to go off trail when the passion hits. I will submit another review later this summer after a few trails.- Great site, I purchased the bike w/o benifit of research, looks i have found a great deal after reading other reviews.

One of the best frames around, alot stronger than the welded monocoque seat masts on the newer models. Same frame Steve Peat and gt team raced for dual in 1999. Great fro beginner racing and just messing around, oh sorry, i mean 'freeriding'
Weaknesses:
those forks, chainset, shifters, rear mech and tyres. Can all be upgraded though, could upgrade for just over $100 (leaving the forks that is)
Similar Products Used:
most other bikes in price range, hard and soft tails, all suffered in long term,

Bottom Line:
This is one bargin bike, for most people stock parts are fine, the forks are suntour but they work ok (remember Some of the giant europe team use these) the shock is basic but works, and all other parts are fine, upgrade when they break. i only changed mine becasue i work in a bike shop (cheaper parts) and i need stuff i know will survive racing. i drive is a gift, she climbs great for a full suspension, 7000 aluminum frame might be a little heavy but at least you know she'll take a pounding, had this bike for about a month and allready climbed a few tractor roads here in the west coast of norway,
Weaknesses:
she didnt respond so great on the downhill, i think a fork upgrade should remedy this, the breaks seem iffy to me will get them replaced soon, havnt rode the bike a whole weak before i had to adjust the derailers, guess the cost of the i-drive took a little quality out of the rest of the components.

great bike for the price, the i-drive is genius, sure with a few upgrades here and there this bike goes beyond the entry level gt was aiming for, the frame is a bit heavy but unless your a serious trailer it shouldnt be a problem, under 800 im exctatic a few more dollars in the bike shop will turn her into a serious contender for some serious trails, now if only i was skilled enough to maximize her.
i drive woulda got her a five for value if gt didnt stump us on the rest of the setup.
800 will only go so far, she deserves a five but after realizing you'll need a few trips to the bike shop to turn her into something more than just an i-drive i could only find it in my hear to give her a 4 overall

Overall, a great start. I-drive FS for under 800 bones... The weight (especially with the stock components) will test you on the inclines, but you'll fly DH.
