I have been ridding this bike for 7 years (2 years off for deployments) and have never had a significant problem with it. Rock Solid frame and the idrive system is outstanding up hills. This ride is great for my 220+ lbs!
Weaknesses:
A little heavy.

Mostly stock. Added XT shifters, new tires (every couple of years), a pair of stems, a lot of sweat, and changed out a ride damaged part here and there.
Bottom Line:
This bike has taken a punishment, it's paint is scratched & chiped, and there is a little rust on the bolts but I would sooner sell my jeep than lose this bike. I have ridden her along the rock of the Atlantic shore. In the swamps and mud. On the streets of Hartford and she has never let me down.

Similar Products Used:

Bike Setup:

Bottom Line:
This bike is my baby. The frame is tough as nails. I-Drive suspension works like a dream. Many components were adequate stock, but some had to go. Especially the tires. Upgrading to disc brakes was easy. My bike has almost full XTR, what a difference over stock Deore and Deore LX. When my road bike broke 1 week before a century ride I put skinny tires on my I-drive and rode the century with it. I was totally impressed. The suspension is super efficient. There was only 1 other fs bike in the ride(Trek Fuel 100)and that guy couldn't finish. This bike is a great all around bike and gets way more miles than my road bike. Have heard that the quality of I-Drive frames went down when GT went bankrupt so be carefull with newer models but don't pass up a chance to pick up a 2000 or 2001 I-Drive frame. In my opinion one of the best fs frames for all around riding. Mine looks like a motocross bike with its mud flaps and I get frequent compliments on it.

Very sturdy frame, geometry design is good and looks great. I-Drive is sweet and rides plush.
Weaknesses:
A couple of xtra pounds.
Bike Setup:
GT iDrive, Rock Shox SID Dual Air rear shock, 2003 Rock Shox Psylo XC U-Turn (adjustable travel) fork, Avid Mech. Disc in front, V brakes rear, Mavic Wheels, Panaracer 2.4 on front and 2.1 on rear, Shimano XT Drivetrain, and Syncros components.
Bottom Line:
The original setup on the bike was ok. I upgraded the old Judy Race for the Psylo U-turn, changed tires, added the front discs and replaced the LX to XT drivetrain. Since these mods were done, i've actually enjoyed ridin this bike a lot. I ride very rough singletracks, very fast and do 3-4 Ft. jumps. The frame feels strong and even though i'm the 2nd. owner of this frame, there isn't a sign of weakness on the frame anywhere. I was a bit skeptical about upgrading this bike after reading some of the reviews on the frame but took my chances anyways. This is a great bike frame. If you have and old one or are looking into getting a nice bike to get started in, i'd say go for it, after some upgrades this bike is up there with some of the newer $2500 out there for 1/2 the investment. I'm 5'10" and weigh 175lbs. and the frame is Medium size. I will ride this bike for as long as it holds up and I think it's gonna be a while before I spend any more $$$ on a new ride.

i-Drive ROCKS SOLID!!! factory set for disk brakes. hollowtech crankset is featherweight set and sealed... 3 year old bike is tighter than most 2003 species in its origional price range...This bike kickz azz!
Weaknesses:
origional Tioga extreme xc tires had to go..(the wear on these tires however tell me that this bike was previously owned by a fairy...they were like new and material wise very remnant of pencil erasor rubber!) plastic cap on syncros headset freaks me out a little (especially after reading some of the other reviews...)

Bottom Line:
i've had this bike for a mere 3 months and i've put well over 600 hard miles on it and it rides like a dream. i-drive is something i dont think i can live without after riding this machine.. its the last American made GT if you see one for under a grand BUY IT! The bikes a little heavy so its not for weight snobs (i added a few grams with the motoraptor 2.4s and the ride weight felt like it went down)I would still like to know why in the hell those tiogas were added to such a sweet frame..i think i got my $350 worth with the i-drive alone....i'm the dustcloud that just blew past you on the hill!! what more can i say....i-drive i-drive i-drive nothing compares (i'm giving it 5 cuz its 3 years old with all the factory origionals still above average)

Frame weld to seatmast post broke.I had to wait over 2 1/2 months for the replacement. However, it was very much worth the wait!!!
I really enjoyed the XCR-3000 until it broke! The wait totally sucked! However, Pacific replaced the XCR-3000 with a beautiful new 1.0(white/gold/charcoal color)! The new improvements are awesome and , the bike handles much better than the old one.GT reinforced every weakness into a strength. The weight comes in at @#31.5 which I know sounds heavy. What squishes this issue is the ride! The bike actually feels lighter to me! I'm sure this is because I weigh 225+ and lift weights regularly...but, I do believe that this bike will be an awesome trailbike for me (and many others). It will be interesting to see what others will say about the new '03 bikes! Bottom Line:
The problem with this bike is that it comes as a halfway house. Its too heavy and has too much travel for an XC race bike. Its fork has too little travel and the brakes are crap for a freeride bike. However, it has the makings of an excellent trailbike. Aslong as you clipped in it pedals well. Pop in a proper 100 - 125 mm fork and it kicks the bike back into a much nive ride position. Slam disc brakes on and it stops like a penny. Its a brilliant durable frame and it's now a dream bike. The problem is it hits a pricepoint and I know that the next bike I want will have full XTR, an even better fork but the same brakes. I love it.

This bike cost me a whopping $350 Canadian. That's like 5 Bucks in the U.S. (hehe) For that price I got the frame and SID rear shock, and have not had a problem with it yet. I am a freerider, about 185lbs, I do drops, hits, you name it. People who have had probs with their SIDs blowing, should have put in some effort to take care of things. I lent my bike to my buddy for a month, he weighs in at about 275lbs. Yeah big freakin' boy. I had to run the shock max PSI(250PSI) for the entire time. He beat the hell out of it, and it smiled, and asked for more. This bike rocks ass. The only thing bad thats ever happened is when I got my foot caught in the rear brake line and ate it. Not happy. The put all this kick ass technology into a smokin' bike, and the let something like this go? What the heck. Duck tape fixes the problem, but it shouldn't exist.

here is just a follow up reivew. I have experienced ABSOLUTELY NO PROBLEMS with the bike in the 2 years I have ridden it. The frame has held up superbly, and even with the abuse of landing off-camber and mulitple crashes (plus one endo), there is no play in the bushings or shock mount. I have only replaced some stock components, but mostly because I wanted to, not that the stock components failed.
Weaknesses:
Only downside? I wish it had more travel. Oh well, what can I say because I started out as a novice racer, but I have left the races and tried more light freeriding. Some stock components were bad choices (the syncros stem and bar combo were terribe) but otherwise everything was pretty strong, yet reasonably light.

Bottom Line:
This bike (frame anyway) has served its purpose through hard thrashing and 2 years of abuse. I weigh 125 lbs, so of course it has not experienced the wear of an average rider, but still it has held up VERY well. I used to be a weight weenie, but I now understand that sometimes the heavier something is, the stronger it is, and this seems to be the case with the XCR 3000. I imagine that I will bash this frame for about one or maybe two more years before I upgrade to a new frame. I have experienced the i-drive concept, and I am a true believer in it's abilities to isolate the cranks from any rear suspension movement ( you don't feel the trail jerking at your pedals when descending). If GT (or should I say Pacific) could just integrate the i-drive with some type of 4 bar linkage, it would truly shine because there would not be any suspension lockout under braking. I don't know if I will ever buy a GT again simply because their product developement probably took a huge hit in the merger, but we'll have to see what happens. Overall, a great, robust frame.

Bottom Line:
Apart from 3 months of waiting (during this time I was sent a totally bent bike) at the end of which the local bike store sourced a bike from a shop in England, this bike was great before I started experiencing problems with the rear shock mount to the frame. Unfortunately it has not withstood 2 years of riding the trails in Jersey. Problems started when the bolt at the top of the shock kept loosening because the bolt hole on the left was slightly ovalised. In attempting to solve this problem I overtightened the bolt and out on a ride the bolt snapped. Whilst awaiting a replacement from GT I used a DIY store bolt which did the job for the 2 months I had to wait. The new bolt (which had to be sourced from elsewhere because GT could not be bothered, but was the same as original, lasted two rides before snapping on a smooth trail causing an accident. I now await the replacements for the extra bits I lost in the crash, but I'm not holding my breath, and I will never buy a GT bike again!! minus five Chilis for GT Europe. Two for the Bike as its good for the cliff paths which I would describe as mild to medium in technicality, it just has some issues with that mount, oh and that plastic cap on the Syncros stem which i also had to replace with a customised metal cap.

The ULTIMATE Down-country setup – this bike is 3rd glove!
The Psylos forks better balances the bikes 4.6" rear, and the fox coil makes a 200% difference, not that untrusty airy pogo-sid rebound ride, the best upgrade for any I-D!
The Azonic shorty stem & bars, loose the XC feel & give the bike even more handling to describe, expecially with the Hope DH4 spot discs, (which I have reviewed on their own).
Now I have finished this bike, it rides and looks completely different, it does everything a downhill, trail & freeride bike does... Yes! 3 bikes in one! A bit heavier & stronger though, but not much more than originally specced, who cares, the ride is well worth it!

Bottom Line:
I tried a '99 XCR-3000 last year & hated it. The bike & rear Rock Shox Deluxe coil over both felt heavy & loose. Ugh. Then this past fall I tried the '00 model with the SID rear. What a difference air makes. I loved the biek, adn the falling prices as Christmas approached sure helped. I begged & pleaded but my wife said no. Which made it really nice when Santa surprised me with the bike on Christmas morning.
I have only had a chance to ride it since Christmas, but overall it feels great. I can crank the seatpost way up and ride a very efficient (albeit heavy) FS bike. It soaks up the bumps and ruts, and is a blast to go fast on (kinda makes it weird to switch to my fully rigid SS!). So far it works exactly as predicted. If I drop the saddle way down it is a blast to toss around on urban trials, and I look forwrd to learning to drop bigger drops and maybe even jump with this bike.
Overall impressions: Lose the stock Koski brakes ASAP. The levers are wimpy, too. The I-Drive works wonderfully, and keeps everything really smooth. The mounting position of the bottom shock bolt sucks - it is far too easy for water & gunk to accumulate under the shock body at that point & if enough mud packed up it could be bad. I noticed the shop has a 5000 model with a cool plastic mudguard for that location. The Judy Hydracoil and air rear shock seem to be a perfect pair for this frame. I may even try out the 100mm Judy option. The bike weight can leave the rider kind of bipolar - it seems inconsequential one minute, then you have to hoist the beast up by hand for some reason and it seems like a pig. Providing a disc-ready bike is sooo cool. Now all I have to get is the brakes themselves. Nice!
Like others have said - if you are looking for a lightweight XC racer - look someplace else (or at least at the GT XCR Team with way less weight and less travel). If you want a fun bike to do it all on - this is it. The only comlaint I have is that GT needs to spec better V brakes and why isn't the frigging company e-mail working after all this time??

I bought this bike for 700 english pounds, reduced from twice that price so I'm happy with it. I was also very happy to find that instead of cruddy Koski brakes, I had nice deore units with combi levers :) I'm not gonna lie, its much heavier than a hardtail on the climbs. I-drive helps, but its heavy. Dont expect it to be as fast on the ascent. However, it makes up for it because as soon as you make the top you are happier. Downhill it is soooo much fun :) My shock was a little too hard today, but it was still super. I know that if I'd been riding on my hardtail I would have found the rocks made it too hard to fly down at the speed I made. It's not a downhill race bike, but its not bad. Perhaps with different shocks and brakes it would be super... People used to ride with half of the travel this bike has. Which brings me onto the forks. I apparently have medium setup. I reckon this is a load of bull and if o they are far too soft. I have the turny things t the top has hard as they go and I'm not happy. They may be plush, but I am p*ssed off that I might have to pay 40 quid for new springs. As for the rear shock, its smashing. Its adjustable and I'm happy with it. I however, it might be nice to replace it with one with lockout when it packs in. On a level playing field with loads of turns, this bike comes into its own. It eats up bumps and you can bunny hop it over any small rivers in the way and if you screw it up, the rear shock takes care of it. Bottom line, I havnt ridden it for a month yet but Its good. After a few months, lets see if i'm in love :) If you dont mind a slower climb and enhoy your single and descents track fast its well worth 700 quid. I wouldnt have paid full price for it though.

Tried several models and none worked as well as the I-Drive.However...the Tioga tires were a total let down.Tried all kinds of different pressures and I pinch flatted about 50% of rides.Changed to Panaracer XC Pro....beauty!!The SDG saddle is harder than nipples in January.Syncros stem does slip a little although less than some of the reviews I've read. GT specs this bike with disc ready hubs? Not mine! What's up GT? Cheapin' out on us Canucks again? Also the Judy Race came with the soft springs and I'm 190 lbs. Stiff springs have been on order from Rockshox since August. These things aside I would recommend this bike to anyone who rides in a variety of situations with a variety of riders.

Bottom Line:
Well, I didn't plan to upgrade all of the parts, but couple of days ago, I found out that the only things that is left stock is the WTB headset and the frame. I bought this in Japan, as you probably know, so it took about 1.5 times more money than what you would pay in the States. If I knew I was going to upgrade everything I should have built a bike from a frame... Intense Tracer for example. I'm thinking about saving up some money to actually buy one and transfer all of my parts to the frame. The bottom line is, though, I love this bike! I think this bike performs so much better over other bikes around the same price range even w/ the stock parts. I-drive really works. As everyone have said before, this bike climbs just as well as it decends. I-drive can make things easier for begginers as well as more experienced riders. This is a good thing for me, but this bike may be boring for some experienced riders out there who like to control everything on their own. However if you are looking for top-notch parts, be sure not to be like me and build it from a frame! Anyways, this is the best bike for the money. Five flamin' chilis!!!!!

Bottom Line:
This is a follow-up to my earlier review. I've ridden the thing for a full season now and couldn't be any happier with it. I wore out the stock Tiogas (soft compounds don't like asphalt and I ride the damn thing everywhere!)and replaced them with the Panaracers. Both brands of tires seemed to work well enough around here (clay hardpack, mud, loam). The stock seat was literally a PITA when I first rode it, but either it broke in or my butt did, because I'm happy with it now. I didn't like the Judy Race all that much, but upon tearing it down for maintenance, found that it had the medium-soft spring setup. I'm changing it to the medium springs 'cause I'm a bit porky...hopefully $40 springs will make me happy enough to save the price of a new fork! It was an extremely wet spring so I the rust I found in the headset wasn't much of a surprise. There was a little rust in the right side bearing on the front wheel, but nothing worth worrying about. I haven't torn into the bottom bracket, the rear hub or the I-drive yet to find out what water has done in there, but hopefully it won't be too bad.

I drive works; I don't totally understand it yet but from the first mile I was happy with the bike. It climbs better than my 23 lb homegrown and weighs about 6 lbs more; go figure. I was scepticle about the judy race for at first (I'm a fan of marzocchi and have never really been too impressed with the front sid shocks) but so far it has performed pretty well.
The bike sticks to the ground on hills which is nice; just set up the rear sid correctly and like I said before the bike can climb. To add to that it descends well also.
I couldn't put them in the weakness column because of the level of the bike but the lx rear der. and the lx hollowtech cranks SUCK. Upgrade those two items and the rock hard seat and you're off with a bike that will keep you happy for some time. I would recomend changing the breaks if you are an aggresive rider but if not wait until they burn out.
This was the last year of the us handmade gt's in this line so pick one up if you can.

Strengths:
Strong and agressive looking frame. Confident ride as speeds increase. Great control over rocks, roots, ruts, and moderate drop-offs and switchbacks, especially for first-time mountain bikers. The I-drive system works as advertised, and inspires faster uphill and downhill riding because of excellent traction. Best stock components are SID dual-air rear shock, LX Hollowtech cranks, Deore rapid-fire shifters, and Syncros riser bar and seat post.
Weaknesses:
2000 line of XCR's are heavy - range 28-31 lbs. Component mix including tires and wheelsets probably should be upgraded to lighter parts to make bike a better climber and racer. I felt for the money that GT could have spec'ed bike with better seat (than SDG Comp), better brakes (than Koski), better rims (than Mavic 221), and better derailleurs (than LX). Rear shock mounts are a bit thin, and the cone and cup BB is harder to clean and maintain than the newer sealed bearings in the 2001 models.
Similar Products Used:
Tested, but never owned: Specialized FSR Enduro Comp, Giant Xtc NSR.
Bike Setup:
Stock except for XT front der., XTR rear der., '00 Marz. Z4 Flylight air fork, Selle Royale gel seat, Koolstop brake pads, Syncros hinged riser stem, and WTB Enduroraptor tires.
Bottom Line:
I am an older rider and new to mountain biking, so I wanted to start with a FS bike and one that was well-made and had a strong frame that would last. This is my first bike, and I couldn't be more pleased. This bike takes everything that I currently put it thru, given my skill level. It inspires confidence in riding technical terrain, especially downhill singletrack. The I-drive system really works well to keep the rear grounded without bobbing both seated and standing. I believe the I-drive technology should serve GT well for many years to come. The weight of the bike and its stock components, however, make XC racing, heavy freeriding, or DH-ing less of an option as configured. This bike has beautiful unclutterd lines, looks agressive, and to me (at least) is the "ideal" trail bike. The '00 RS Judy Race front shock is excellent, but wanted to try air fork for softer ride, and Z4 Flylight air with low pressure (27.5 psi with rider weight 160) and lower tire pressure (30 psi) gives an all-absorbing and stable front end to bike. I also switched to Shimano 545 pedals, and changed stock stem to 90 mm/40 degree rise to affect quicker steering and better downhill control - but this "GF Genesis" geometry on this bike puts a premium on weighting the front wheel and watching your line constantly, as small hand movements affect the direction greatly. All in all, I look forward to riding the XCR for many years, and only anticipate changing the brakes to better V's or discs when the current ones wear out. For ratings: 4 jalapenos for value (could have better stock components) and 5 for overall fun and quality.

Strengths:
The i-drive works! Period. The frame design is wonderful. Great welds. This bike is such an awesome ride. I tested out four other bikes before riding this one...and I fell in love with it. It felt RIGHT. Though I also really liked the GF sugar3. That damn i-drive system is what sold the bike. If my budget allowed me to spend more money, I would diffently have gone for a higher model. Im a sucker for quality stuff, even though this bike well serve me well for a long time. The componets are very good. I did Upgrade the front forks to mazzochi z3fly-light. They work very well. The drive-train, suspension, frame geometry, brakes, seat post, and controls are super. When I was shopping for a bike I knew I was going to be riding to work, cross-country rides. But never did I think I would be doing these north shore trails. The bike has handled awesome!! in these conditions. It can take your riding to higher levels.
Weaknesses:
The seat is on hard side. My commute to work is 33kms one way and when I first started to ride to work the seat was uncomfortable half way there. Im now proud to say that its ok...its not a real problem now. You just need to re-position your butt(it gets used to it) and to keep hammering. It pushes you to get there sooner!! I sometimes wish that I could lower my seat further. Im considering having an extra seat/post comb just for the freeride/trail stuff. I think GT could have designed a better rear shock mounts. But then again im no engineer! I sometimes wonder if the cables are too exposed and risk snagging they might be better off running along the top tube instead of along the side of the lower tube. No real concern, just a thought. I paid $1900cdn. plus another 150 for the fork upgrade. A fair price I think. Unsure of maintenance costs of i-drive??? Hopefully GT won't kill us on the parts.
WARNING!! Do not test ride a GT xcr unless you have the money to buy one. You will want one bad and won't be able to sleep! Im really happy with my choice. Even though there are some really good deals out there. Some bikes may come with better componets, but they have no i-drive...its sooo sweeet!!!! The ride is great. Im very happy with this machine. I ride 66k's to work in a day and the ride is great...I actually look forward to it(the ride that is, not work itself). Plus it takes all the crazy North Shore trails! Yahooo! Get yourself a 3000 or one of the higher models. Save! Save! Save! Its not a hardcore downhill shreddin' machine nor is it a trick cross-country racer..but its everything else. You can't go wrong thats forsure.

Great bike, haven't had a single complaint until a week ago. I ride around town and off road, so I needed a versatile bike and the GT was it. It does have a little trouble climbing with stock tires but still, it's better than any thing else in the whole scene. I used to get backaches from riding, now I arrive on a pillow.
Weaknesses:
The point of connection between the frame and rear shock, continuously rattled and was loose, took the bike to the place of sale last week and was told it is a known defect in the bushing. Come to find out the hole for the bushing is elongated and could crack!! So I have a brand new frame coming my way!! GT was great (from what I am told), didn't question the tech when he told them about the problem. Even sent me a letter of apology for inconvenience and thanked me for purchasing their product.
Similar Products Used:
Tried everything from a Huffy to a Litespeed, I found that most bikes have the same old shiznit. But GT pushed the normal and added the i-drive. They also have the greatest combination of components (each rider likes something different)
Bike Setup:
Completely Stock, dropped the front shock to lowest travel and rebound. But when I go out turn it up way high and bomb around.
Bottom Line:
Absolutely the BEST bike!! I have had such a great time on this bike that I am thinking about buying another GT. I have climbed the hardest trails (flown down them too) this bike is also a chick magnet, I meet girls all the time that are quite impressed.

I thought the GT was a lot smother bike and for the money had some better components. The only thing I did not like was the brakes compared to the Hayes brakes on the Giant XTC so I had the bike shop order Hayes disc brakes from GT and set the bike up that way. What a difference and well worth the money. After about a month of adjusting the brakes they work great, wet or dry they stop on a dime. The other thing that had to go was the hard as a rock seat and I think the stem is next. The Syncros stem has loosened up on me a couple of times and I realy don't like the design. This is one hecka fun bike! You only need to point and shoot this bike up any climb. If you can provide the power the bike will get you there- better and easier than my old hardtail. Standing or sitting while under extreme power or just "tiptoeing". Uphill obstacles are easily cleared with little strife. The balance and reflex of this bike is amazing!
The I-Drive really works well- believe the hype. Downhill was never more fun or fast. You float over lots of scary stuff at speed- if not over around at the last possible half second. Yes the steering is responsive. The combination of travel from both shocks let your free ride the buff stuff as well- almost like skiing.
When you buy this bike replace the stock tires and brakes. At the very least get some new softer rubber pads. My setup weighs in at about 29 1/4 lbs. a bit heftier than my old HT but well worth it. If your a freak about the weight of your bike you may not like it- or you can look at it this way get stronger on the XCR and race your hardtail.
3 flamers for value because the tires, brakes and stock gruppo should be better for this price point.
4 flamers overall because it's so fun to ride!

Bottom Line:
This is a follow-up review of the one I made back in April. I agree with many on the quality control problems that have seemed to plague the Syncros products. My stem was crap from the get-go, but I did get a replacement for free and it has never slipped on the steerer tube again. However, the plastic cap is crap, as my headset has come lose after almost every ride. Currently, it is cracked and awaiting a replacement.
I ended up breaking one of the shock mount bolts, as well as breaking the frame at the seat tube/mast junction. GT's warranty service replaced everything free of charge, but boy do the take a day and a year to ship the stuff. My replacement frame took something like three weeks to arrive; something about a frame shortage...yeah, right (but then, with the Giant XTC DS1 shortage, maybe it's true).
Deore shifters work, but they are not as fast acting as XT. As for durability, I have had no problems with shifting unless dirt contaminates the rear derailleur cable noodle.
Overall, an excellent bike, although a little heavy. I'll give the same rating as last time: 5 flaming turds for value, but only 4 overall because of weight/Syncros/Koski problems

The brakes do look a little flimsy, but as for light XC racer as myself, it doesn't make much difference. I have heard that the syncros stem and bar are bad, but I have experienced no problems.

I love it, and I expect most people to. The iDrive is a miracle in itself, and it can definetly improve your climbing skills. If I had to do anything, I would change the fork to a SID Race, if only I had the cash. but oh well! this bike kicks ass even stock. (the color is nice too) I give it 5 for both categories. It is a great value, and the bike is fantastic.

Strengths:
The design (sweeeet), looks (compliments all the time), I-Drive works really well climbing hills and general pedaling. SID Rear suspension works excellent in heavy pounding.
Weaknesses:
Syncros stem, a bit heavy, Tioga 2.1 bulky tires, Ritchey clipless, stiff saddle, not much space for adjusting seatpost height, LX component . . .
Similar Products Used:
Trek Y-11 OCLV
Bike Setup:
Marzocchi Z4 FlightAir, SNAFU flat pedals . . .
Bottom Line:
The bike gets heavy pounding but responds very well with my trials riding and some cross country rides. About Syncros stem, I rode with it once, didn't like & got it swapped out to Titec stem for free at LBS (didn't want to take a chance either after reading all the reviews about 'em) Titec looks & feel so much better!
The suspension, SID works very well, adjustable with an air pump, the front, I switched to Marzocchi's Z4 for better performance. Bike feels strong and comfortable otherwise. I really recommend getting a better seat because the first 30 minutes of the ride killed my butt. Expect to cut your seatpost to those who like to have it low. LX components are ok, but could swap out to XT/XTR components soon. Brakes, not much of complaint, disk brakes considered. (Wheels are compatible for disk brakes in stock)
Overall, the bike is great for some serious riding. Add and swap few components and it's a racing machine! I-Drive is not a hype, it works very well especially riding up hills. Cross country riders, trials rider (Hans Rey rides the XCR-1000) and mild downhiller should puchase this bike!

Bottom Line:
Here I am reporting back (see my ordeal and reveiw in April '00) after a few private inquiries. GT gets 5 stars now, but I did work for it. I had to b*tch and moan to them, but got a racing frame xcr-le for a couple hundred bucks more. I wanted it to shave some weight. Other than that, no real advantage in my opinion.
Buy the i-drive. Don't mess with the STS Carbon. It's as heavy as the 3000 (I weighed them on a digital scale). I'm now about 28lb with my new stuff. Spend as much or more money than you want to. Get the 1500 or better as components purchased later will cost you more in the long run.

As some of you may know, I was skeptical for a while about the bike after I had put it in layaway. I read alot of our reviews and their were alot of the same complaints; the stem, brakes, and I even heard someone tell me that after riding it for a while that the I-Drive developed a clunking noise and had it replaced and still did it. Well, after much agonizing, I am happy to say that I am very happy about my selection of a bike.I have had no problems at all with any of the things that people have complained about in previous reviews. The brakes do what they are suppsed to do and the stem doesn't seem the least bit loose to me. I also believe I saaw a few people complain about the tires, and also have no complaints about them either. This is my first "real" mountain bike and being a former atv lover, this bike has made my riding experiences live up to all my expectations of mountain biking. I am so happy taht I did choose this bike after all. It absolouteley flys on hardpack single track or dirt roads.

It is around 28 pounds which is heavier than say a Jekyll, and more than any hardtail, but man, all you gotta do is ride one to appreciate it. I will be hitting a couple of XC races this year on it too. The component selection is excellent for the price of the bike. You get the Judy Race fork which is flawless, just not as light as a SID, a SID rear shock, which is beautiful. The seat is even fairly comfortable. I've logged quite a few miles on it already both on and off the trails. It handles like a F1 race car, speeds up like a John Force funny car, and looks as beautiful as any Playbody model.....(does this mean I've been spending too much time at bike shops?)

unfortunately gt has realised that they have designed one awesome ride and they are going to charge us for it. one day before i die (i'm only 27), i hope someone comes out with an amazing product that isn't sold on supply and demand. i have had my 2000 xcr-3000 for almost six months now, it climbs very well and can take a beating. my philosophy is that if your don't crash or burn in a ride your probably not challenging yourself. here in kelowna we have trails that are only a knotch down from the north shore. suffice it to say my bike takes a licken, and keeps on rollin. i have enjoyed every ride on my i-drives(i had a 1999 xcr that my wife now rides) in over a year and a half. the bike i bought did need brakes and shifters bad so i looked into that, and after adding 2.3" dh tires she tracks well. if your looking for an all around freeride bike that does it all you've found it. i ride this at about 31 lbs for freeriding and by swapping forks tires and pedals get it down to 26lbs for 24hr races and xc. best bet, buy the frame and build to spec, that is what i'm doing with my 2001 xcr

Bottom Line:
I ride about 15 - 25 miles a week and have really put the bike through a beating. In that time the I could never get the syncros stem to stay tight. I even took the whole thing apart and remachined the wedges (I work at a machine shop) in a attempt to get it to work better. End result is that the stem now sits in my box of spare parts and I currently have a Bontager stem on it now (I like it A LOT better). I have also cut the bars down and put serfas grips on them. I have a set of Avid Arch rivals brakes on order and I'll see if that helps the bike stop better. My only other complaint is the tires. They just won't corner very well at all. I've almost worn them out and I can't wait to replace them.
Now that all of my whining is done, I would like to say that the bike as a whole is a dream come true. No other bike in the price range felt as smooth as the GT. I feel that the I-drive system is a work of mechanical art and certaintly makes it feel like it climbs better, it definately climbs better than any other full suspension bike I've tried. Overall, I love the bike and I wouldn't settle for anything else. I've been putting some real hard miles on it and its never really let me down (except the stem).

The Judy has really saved my ass a few times on new trails by cushioning huge suprising jolts (two thumbs). Once dialed in, the SID follows terrain well and soaks up knarly jumps. The stock riser bar along with other syncros stuff is nice and the frame design is super sweet. Corners good (without Tiogas). Jumps are super awsome on this bike. I drive works well when going up a hill compared to other FS bikes.
Weaknesses:
I am not sure about koski brakes; they feel funny and usually throw me off gaurd when braking going down a hill that winds through trees. Syncros stem came a little loose, but it tightened again. Tioga tires suck. The back end will continually slide from underneath you in wet/loose conditions, hills and turns. GT could lower the price on their frames a little.
Similar Products Used:
Sugar, Mongoose FS
Bike Setup:
All XCR 3000's come with a GT aluminum seat post; however, I noticed that in the back of the 2000 catolog the specs were for a Syncros machined aluminum 6061 seat post, so I had lbs call GT to send me my rightfull 100$(worth, by I got mine free) seat post to match the rest of my syncros stuff. After that I added a serfas deep v groove seat to take pressure off my taint.
Bottom Line:
This bike is cooler the faster you go on it. Wish I could afford STS 1000 Carbon with way better components, however. GT fs bikes are awsome and I believe that they are one of the best out there, except for weight. The fact of the matter is, however, the fastest rider I know rides a 31 lb. Trek Y fs and only has one lung. Sometimes I think that people use weight as an excuse when the real problem is they suck.

Bottom Line:
This is my first new bike in many years. When I started shopping for a sturdy mountain bike I was overwhelmed with what the market offered. I immediately turned to MTB for the ratings and found myself looking hard at full suspensions and especially the iDrive system. I test drove the XCR-4000, and was surprised at how much less of the “soft peddle” that I experienced with other FS makes and models, due entirely to the iDrive system. When it came to making the purchase, I went up to the XCR-3000 for the better crank and gear setup. Plus the rims and frame are disk brake ready. When I started asking around my circle of cycling friends, I found that a lot of them said that they were sorry that they did not consider and purchase a GT with iDrive. As a new GT XCR owner I come across a lot of folks that ask me about the bike and my opinion of the iDrive. I even ran into (not literally) a factory rider on a local trail who was conducting a test ride on a GT XCR that was equipped with an upgrade rear shock that was a gas filled coil over spring variety. Although I am certainly not in the market for a new rear shock yet, it still encouraged me that there are some equipment manufacturers that are designing more options for this bike.
I have not had this bike for too long, but I have ridden it very hard. Water, dirt and mud have not hindered this bike at all and the only thing that is holding me back from letting it all out is my inexperience. An absolutely great investment for any level of rider. I have to say that it serves me well at my level.

coming from a hardtail and being partial to them i think this bike is very comparable in the fact that it climbs very, very well if you set the sid up stiff. this is what sold me on the bike. the ability to stiffen it up or make it nice and plush is unheard of in other designs because of the idrive. as far as the weight goes, if you pick your parts wisely you can get it down to 25 easily. i have yet to upgrade to discs but that will be in the very near future. i think that gt should have went with avids instead of koski. those brakes were worthless. as far as syncros i have never heard anything good about them. the headset is not one of wtb's better products, but it is ok. overall i am very happy with the bike and would recommend it to anyone looking for a xc bike that performs very well but is not too concerned with weight although that can be changed very easily.

Bottom Line:
I agree fully with Mel from Sydney, Australia. It's hard to say more because he's right on with it, but: I like the bike. It's smooth for XC riding, yet can be a monster truck for knarly downhills. I don't like the feel or modulation of the Koski brakes, this may be a persoanl thing, but they don't help me on really steep, technical trails--therefore the Avids. GT could have offerred a lighter frame at a better price point, but the price difference between the 2000 and 3000 (same frames) and the Easton 1000 is pretty significant. The Sid rear shock is very smooth for an air shock and feels much better than the Rock Shox Judy Race front. The judy actually feels "noodely", and I think I might have to replace it with a Manitou SX-R or SX-Ti. Why is the Judy so flexy? I can really feel it. The stock headset self-destructed so replaced with a King. Overall, a very fun bike to ride, climbs well, even standing. I keep cutting the seatpost in incrments and am going to take another 1/4" off--to make descending the knarly stuff easier to get my weight back. The bike descends good, and again like Mel Said, feels more smooth and the susspenion comes alive with speed. I do like the width and profile of the stock Tiogas, but they seem to slide out too easy. Overall GT did a good job and I'm very happy to have this bike, and to be involved in this awesome, incredible sport!

Weaknesses:
Discovered that Syncros isnt proven stuff, stem comes loose after a hard ride, plastic topcap? 2 later, still waiting on steel, or new stem! as it stresses the WTB headset which stresses the frame. The Judy forks can go on the stack too, why didnt GT stick to Marzocchi as on 99 spec? Judys flex too much, understeer and bottom out, basically the front end is woeful compared to the excellent SID setup rear. Grips & seat didnt last long, not bad though, tyres are going too, sorry but tiogos dont grip and they are wear easily. The rims could be better, they buckle easy, recreational set to move over for mavic disc rims.
Similar Products Used:

Bike Setup:
To suit my style this bike needs; azonic stem, Z1 forks, disc brakes, 321 rims, IRC tyres, better seat
Bottom Line:
Good bike for an allrounder, on the track the bike can be knarly on tight twists and turns, but excellent through a fast line or downhill, as the bike does not come alive until the speed is up, which isnt too hard. It likes to swallow up everything underneath it (full float rear effect), over technical terrain it can give rear feedback as it finds traction.
The weight factor isnt much, but GT could make it lighter i suppose, anyway this bike is as light & fast as a decent HT, the engineering is right on, just needs a few custom tweaks to suit.

Bottom Line:
Let me first start by stating my old ride is a GT Korakarom, circa 1990. I stuck with GT because I felt they are a solid company and have solid equipment. The geometry felt good, hence my decision for xcr 3000. Paid $1300 at lbs.
Onto the grim reality.... 1st weekend in Moab, minor crash yields loose Syncros stem. Unable to repair it... miles into the ride. Walk out. LBS in Moab can't get it to tighten, so I bite the bullet and purchase Titec stem (with double clamp) and WTB headset (old one bent in process of trying to ride out -- my sacrifice).
GT says everything is fine with syncros (rep visit at lbs) and my fault for purchasing new stuff. Yeah, right. I told them to keep their Syncros crap and I'll stay with a more secure stem. Who knows -- could be LBS didn't properly pre-grease and torque the stem, but I'm not willing to gamble with that Syncros design.
So everything is great until yesterday when I purchase a repair stand and look at the bike upside down -- inspecting paint chips. Find a hairline stress fracture on the frame, where the rear SID shock mounts to the top bushing. (88 miles on the bike FYI) Call GT in distress, they say rush to LBS, and call them back. LBS confirms frame is cracked, and GT says they'll send a new one asap (I prodded them to expedite the process and hurry).
We'll see how long I'm without my ride. Quite disappointed as I've had my fair share of crap to deal with on this new bike. I weigh 160lb and had the rear shock set at 165 load/185 rebound psi, which is a little stiff for me. GT warranty tells me today (pleading for them to overnight me the frame) says that if the shock/preload isn't set properly, one could bottom out and cause stress to the frame. Are they serious? I'm light, running the shock stiff, and still cracked the frame. Hopefully, just got a lemon (perhaps the frame was damaged in shipping to shop).
I love this bike, but can't wait to work out the problems. Would rank it 5/5, but for now 3 b/c of the stem/headset issue and 4 for frame issue, yet eagerness of GT to replace it. I'll report back hopefully in bliss in 1 month.

Faux aftermarker components (Syncros), I-drive, color scheme (get a flashing woopie light and pretend you are a cop on Pacific Blue!)
Weaknesses:
Weight (29 lbs stock) GT warranty service (had a problem with the stem not holding onto the steerer tube very well. It took about three weeks to finall get in my new stem. Also, frame started creaking...took to LBS and figured out problem...took GT another two weeks to mail the part that I needed...something to do with the dogbone bearings)
Stock, except for Michelin Wildgripper Lite tires.
Bottom Line:
The bike is like riding a couch through the woods. The suspension is great. The I drive isolates pedal feedback, but weight shifts will activate the rear, so you still have to have a smooth pedal stroke.
Besides the problem with the stem, the only other thing that I had gripes with were the tires. The terrain that I ride on always has loose soil and debris on it, so I needed a tire that could bite through that stuff. The knobs are just too blunt. I switched to Michelin Wildgripper Lite (1.95). I also didn't like the size of the Tioga's. They were 2.10 and I could hardly get them through the brakes when removing the wheel.
The bike does not turn quick enough, which I found out riding through tight twisty singletrack. While it is 29 lbs, it does climb well, albeit with a little more effort that a XC steed. Sprinting this bike will also let you know that you are on a dualie and not some race machine; getting up to speed takes a little while.
It comes with disc brake compatible wheels, but I have yet to decide to upgrade. I suppose I could save a few ounces by switching back to canti wheels. Also, I am quite sure that the saddle, while comfortable, is also a weight culprit.
No problems with the shifting. LX seems pretty dirt worthy to me. Lever throw is a little long, but nothing that I can't live with.
Overall, the value of this bike (I paid 13 something) is pretty good, considering you are getting Syncros stuff...5 flaming turds. Overall, rating will have to take a hit for the weight. The bike design is two years old. I am quite sure they can find more areas to reduce the weight down to 26, 27 lbs. 4 turds

Strengths:
Build quality, i-drive engineering (it works), you can actually ride this thing around in top cog, standing up and it wont bob! Blows hardtails.. Fast, takes any hit possible. Best bike me and everyone I know has ridden!
Weaknesses:
Only a few such as the Koski seat is too hard, the Deore chainrings are to recreational, might change to 2 up front as this bike flies, engineering surpasses the components. Have had 2 flats, loose headset & gooseneck, thats all.
Similar Products Used:
Giant, Specialised, Trek, Craftworks, Zaskar
Bike Setup:
Stock, primo platform pedals, Downhill seat & Disc brakes to come, might put azonic bars with more rise & sweep on them.
Bottom Line:
This is my first duallie, have always had a hard tails, this duallie has transformed me, i nearly bought a Zaskar hT, glad i didnt, cause this GT duallie is like my old dirt bike without a motor! Its about time that a decent duallie came out you can ride on the road, which isnt a pogo stick! My old GT palomar bush basher lasted, but my kidneys didnt.
I will launch the i-drive through good ol' ozzie terrain soon, (its getting its 1st service now), will keep you posted..

Strengths:
Great value with this componentry. The XL frame carries my six-five 240 lb frame with no sweat, while the SID in back combined with the I-drive don't buckle even on serious downhill trauma. My friend bought the '99 XCR 2000 last year, and he has been punishing his I-drive with no abandon, and it keeps asking for more. Kudos to GT for the I-drive. I am stoked on the ability of this bike to deal with my size (it was either the GT or a K2 waybig) as a stock piece of equipment. The price was easily reasonable while the payoff is huge. I'm also stoked that the hubs are disc ready for that ominous upgrade! I truly feel like this machine is a great purchase for anybody in the mid-range money who wants a bike to crush the downhill (it'll take anything!) while still being able to eat up flat stretches (it's all about the nine ring!) and hang in there on the uphills. THIS BIKE RULES! Every piece of equipment on this thing serves its purpose beyond the call of duty, from the fat Tiogas to the SDG saddle. Even the GT standard grips work great!
Weaknesses:
I had to change my Judy Race coils out, as they came with one medium and one soft(!?). I swapped in the extra heavies and it results in a stiff and responsive front end. The uphill battle is never fun, and the weight of the bike might wear on lighter riders. The KIOSK brakes seem okay, but I am leary of them. I'll let you know about them in a few months (provided they last).

Giant DS, Specialized FSR,

Mine is stock, except for the xtraheavy coils in the Judy Race.
Bottom Line:
This is a stellar bike. You can't go wrong. There aren't enough flamin' chilis for it...

Strengths:
GT i-drive (it really works, it is not just hype). Relatively light weight (lighter than most of my friends steel frames and the Specialized FSR's). Easier to clean after tough muddy trails than most F/S bikes because the i-drive shields some of the usual tough spots and has nice round cavities for cleaning. Nice stock specs (see below for the exception). i-drive sets up easily and eliminates all bob when riding in the saddle. It configures quickly and painlessly for harsher trails and lighter "road" work. I can't count the number of times the i-drive saved my tail from being ejected during technical XC descents. It responds in a very active fashion to ground input without any noticeable impact on the pedal stroke. GT's literature claims that to understand the i-drive you need "a physics degree or about 30 seconds in the saddle." I have both and I can assure you that this is a very solid bike with a very theoretically accurate design behind it. The Rock Shox devices in the front and rear are well suited to this bike. The drive train is LX/XT but I can out drive a friend of mine with full 1999 XTR. The 2000 Shimano LX stuff is much better than the 1999. The Shimano Hollowtech crankset is a dream. E-mail me if you have a specific concern and can’t get an answer out of GT (which shouldn’t happen).
Weaknesses:
Koski brake system is only mediocre and not very adjustable. No cartridge brake pads as standard equipment.
Similar Products Used:
Compares to Giant DS1/DS2, Specialized FSR Expert, Schwinn Homegrown among others...
Bike Setup:
XCR3000; SRAM 9.0 brakes/levers; YETI hardcore grips; Bontrager Race Lite Bar Ends (though not all that necessary b/c of the great Syncros riser bar);
Bottom Line:
If you are looking for top of the line F/S performance for XC or XC racing and doing it on a budget this is THE bike to buy.
