Was pretty much stock until i moved to wales - now: 2008 RS Recon 351, fox float rl w/ pro deal rear shock, Sram x7/x9 groupset w/ shimano triple chainset, mavic 319 disc rims laced to hope xc front and xt rear hubs, Hope e4 pro f&r disc brakes using rear a2z disc adapter
Bottom Line:
Great AM bike, if rather heavy for the climbs! bought the bike brand new in early 2000 and its done me very well. no probs with it at all, just a pity there is no rear disc mount and it is a rather heavy bike by today's standards. I've got it in red and it looks amazing! The bike with all its new set up currently weighs 33.0 lbs

A great ride with almost no mechanical problems after 9 years of use.

This Bike held up very well for the last 6 years and I have had a few weaknesses.
Weaknesses:
in order they arrived - Chain, Seat, Rear (Whole)Wheelset, Rear Triangle(topleft)(fixed), Idrive became loose and sloppy. (fixed). and then once again Rear traingle(topright).which I got re-welded and re-supported.

Bike Setup:

Bottom Line:
The Bottom Line on this Bike is great although I don't recomend Buying another GT at any cost unless to fix the orginal these 99' models are great at any cost fix it I recomend it I have fixed my rear triangle twice due to it snapping at the top where the shock mounts, I have a tig welder next door so it was nice to have. I have tried to get service out of this company for the last 5 years and they wouldnt help me at all I bought this bike brand new and 1 year later things happened with the bike, I e-mailed them and they said there was nothing to be done. I have a great bike delear who eventually fixed it, almost 1 year later. and I had the frame snap twice in two years. My Idrive was simple to figure out once you take the bolts out and unscrew the thing clean all the grease off and put back in the same way you took it out, those of you who need new bearings check out automotive shops. tighten all the way and lock in with three remaining bolts. it's very simple if you work on your own bikes. GT NOW SUCKS THERE MODELS ARE ALL LIKE OURS. BUT, The 2006 Models are awesome looking if you get the GT Idrive Ruckus 7 1.0 2.0 3.0 models just like ours way better. other than that FIX YOUR OWN BIKE UP I HAVE BROKE IT AND FIXED IT ia took it apart completly and put it all back together myself dozens of times and this bike rocked while it lasts I think I will get another 12 years out of it. UNTIL THE FRAME SNAPS

Strengths:
1) Cool solar citrus colour - matches my eyes! 2) People compliment you on a truely excellant bike, time and time again! ok - its being 6 years - you can stop now! 3) I-drive does exactly what it says on the box - it works! 4) I believe its the same frame as the higher models (but only on the 1999 models (from memory)) with cheaper components which are easily upgradable. 5) lightweight - and if you dont think it is - your a wuss! dont argue - your a wuss and you know it!
Weaknesses:
1) tricky to service but not impossible, needs to be kept clean! (no pressure washers!) 2) It needs something to stop dirt gettin in the I-drive mechanism! 3) Everything needs upgrading (except the frame) or just buy the xcr1000 - yea... like we all have money to burn! 4) After 6 years (on average 300 mile per year) of hard riding XC with a few DH and jumps about 4-5 footers and a few hard landings and few tricks - only now the bearings in the pivot start to go and "GT" (bearing in mind this isnt GT anymore just a brandname!) wont sell me the tools to service the pivot point! USELESS! *** WARNING: The WTB saddle gave me terrible down below pains! ***

I bought this bike from my friend who wheighs in at about 280lbs and he had the bike for a year and it lasted through what he took it through even though he was just a weekend worrior who just rode the street but with the wear and tear I've had to replace a few bearings but it's an exceptional bike this bike is only 900 dollars american but here in canada brand new it was way to much but well worth every penny

Strong frame, plush travel, compact size so easily flickable, looks pretty good, pedals OK, worthy of upgrade, better on the downs than on the ups (a good thing in my book), cheap, it's a GT (RiP)
Weaknesses:
Heavy, cables subject to clogging with crap, weedy wheels (foldded front one in half), rear shock is bouncy bouncy with npot much adjustment, no rear disk mount, poor rear tyre clearence, can't get a single ring chain device for it

Bottom Line:
This is a really good starter bike if you are looking to build up a relatively inexpensive do everything machine. It is more suited to playriding rather than XC but too little travel for serious DH. There are a number of faults with the frame, but remember that this was the first geneeration of I-drives and some things did get better. Components arn't great but replace as you trash and you can't go wrong. I have mine set up as a 'freeride' type bike (long travel forks, single ring, short stem, solid wheels etc) and it has done me well but now having to sell up for a Bullit.

Strengths:
Tough bike... handles lots of punishment such as constant stumps, roots, rocks, and 2-4 ft drops. The bike has a great price, especially since it will be used and the company is going out of business.
Weaknesses:
The components are pretty low grade (see overall description). The bike is a little heavy, but when the low grade components start going bad, you can upgrade and start dropping weight.
Similar Products Used:
Not much really. I have a GT hardtail but that doesn't really compare.
Bike Setup:
Lets see... I have upgraded the shifters to XTRs ($120) XT Cranks ($90), XT Bottom bracket ($20), Panaracer fire xc tires ($50)... I plan on swapping out the rear derailer next.
Bottom Line:
Here's the deal... If you are looking for a beginner bike to do some agressive riding, this is it. I ride this bike on melon size rocks as well as technical trails with everything from 4 foot jumps and see-saws to stumps and roots. It also holds up to some nasty wrecks too. The bike really is tough.
What makes this even better as a beginners bike is the fact that you will learn from it. If you truly want to get into mountain biking, you need to learn how to work on your ride. The components on this thing will die! And you will have to replace them... but you will learn so much in the process. I now know how to take my bike apart and put it back together again. That means I know how to take care of it too. If you can't take care of a cheap bike, you can't take care of an expensive bike. If you can't take care of it, then you better be made of money.
DON'T BUY THIS BIKE IF....
1. If you want to ride smooth trails with little or no technical sections. If this is what you want, get a hard tail.
2. If you aren't willing to get a little dirty doing repairs.
3. If you have a ton of cash to afford a brand new high end bike.
BUY THIS BIKE IF....
1. You ride hard and expect your bike frame to hold up.
2. You like technical, rough trails that include lots of technical sections.
3. You want to be a real biker and are willing to actually work on and learn about your bike.
4. You don't have the cash for a higher end bike.
BOTTOM LINE....
This bike has a great price and even after you replace the components, you will still have saved some cash... and you'll get an education for free! It might be a little heavy, but the weight to price ratio is really good. Do lots of research and get a bike that fits the riding that you want to do.

It's a great starter bike for switching to a FS but definitely not a great long term investment. I'm switching to a Fisher Sugar 2 (and shedding about 10 pounds off the bike in the process). I will say that it has stood up under some pretty punishing wrecks (with me getting punished alot more than the bike !) Bottom Line:
I bought this bike over all the others because it does so many things so well. Many may find it to be a heavy machine but it just seems to float over terrain.Climbing is a little daunting at first but even without lockout the suspension works with you to propell you upward. Pedalling is amazing, regardless of what you are negotiating the smoothness of the drivetrain cannot be beaten. On singletrack this bike is really in it's element, fire roads and XC work is what this bike was designed for. Freeriding this bike can lead to tears but you just have to find out the limits of what this incredible machine can do. I also have a Giant XTC AC1 and I have found the GT to be just as versatile.Later models are a little better in terms of weight and the addition of disk brake bosses. Even just for the frame you must have an i-drive.

This is an update from an earlier review. I finally got tired of fussing with the front derailleur so I decided to try replacing the crank (stock SR Suntour). For an 8-speed I could only get a Deore Hollowtech or an Alivio. I went with the Deore (lighter) and now the front shifting is much improved. It's much more compliant when shifting; I don't have to finesse it as much and I no longer have to choose between being able to shift easily from 2-3 or from 1-2. Try replacing the crank before replacing the derailleur, it might work for you. P.S.: The ATACs are awesome pedals!

I have snapped the bolt on the rear suspension linkage twice in 6 months. As a result, I first bent that sheetmetal stuff on the frame and now I can see stress marks all around the bolt holes. The first time it happened at Ringwood Park in NJ on the cannonball trail (yellow trail that goes to 287 I think)and the race course which are rocky. The second time I was jumping at Bethpage S.P. on LI. Not big jummps though, like maybe landing from 2-3 ft. in the air at best. I am 165 lbs. I like the bike, but it doesn't seem to hold up well to punishment. I can't believe I haven't read this in any other reviews. My friend has the same bike and this has happend to him. My brother did the same thing on his FSR which has a similar linkage at the frame. I don't like the shifters because I can't seem to be able to push the lever more than 1 gear at a time. These shifters are definitely designed for bigger hands than mine. Sounds like I don't like the bike but I do. Really. Its a comfy ride, and a fantastic value (if you don't bust the frame). Unfortunately, I think the frame problem is fatal. I'm getting a special bolt and will double check the condition of the bushings.

4.6 inches of plush travel that still lets it climb like a hardtail I-drive is awesome Components Judy
Weaknesses:
Rock Shox Deluxe is crap i creaks and is really stiff (I'm a 14 year old 175 pounder) I also blew it out after 6 months of hard riding The judy I got rid of cause I live in Canada and we only ride BOMBERS...eh!
Fox Float R/C, 2001 Marzocchi Bomber Z5 Coil 100, Rokko DH 2.4 (Front) and Gazzolodi 2.3 (Rear), LX Freehub
Bottom Line:
This is an awesome bike for the money. The I-Drive works great and has tons of travel for a so called XC bike. I just had to replace the free hub after 2 years of abuse. The only problems I had with this bike was the Rock Shox Super Deluxe which was pitiful and the Judy which was actually a nice fork but not plush enough compared to my Z5. If u want a bike that can do everything this is it....P.S. I have the red model and it looks awesome

Great bike for the weekend warrior or cross country rider. Don't recommend riding it off the trails too much as the loss of power due to the full suspension will kill you on the pavement.
I have ridden it through VA, TN, NC, CO and it has proven to be a great XC rider and downhill bike for the $$. Looking forward to upgrading the components for smoother shifting. Oh, and as I weigh about 210lbs, I had to tighten the shocks substantially to keep from losing too much pedal energy to shock compression.

I submitted a review of this bike in May of laat year when it was still stock components. As my riding has progressed I've spent a fair bit on upgrading the wheelset, groupset and saddle/seatpost. These were the main gripes that I has last time and now that I've changed to what I wanted, I can't fault this bike at all. It currently weighs in at just under 28lb so it is light enough for me and the I-Drive is still as good as ever. The post below states that it is no good for downhill - the first I-Drives were not designed for downhill, they were made for XC which they excel at. I've ridden all sorts of full sussers over the past year from Kona KuKu's to Klein Mantra's and can honestly say that nothing I've used can touch the I-Drive for consistency on the trails.

Bottom Line:
I've done miles on the road, miles downhilling, miles X-Cing and the bike hasn't faultered. It out shone my Saracen Frenzy going through some serious single track, it stayed plush right through some nasty gubbins and took a verticle descent with an instantaniouse rapid rise through a river like nothing i've ever ridden-bar the Whyte. And it took some serious beating on the DH course, simply because its rained some serious amount here and it moved a rather large boulder, and its entire family on to the course. OK, so, its a super bike, not to heavy for the price, good value, and great versitility. If you don't catagorise yourself, or can't, then this might be the bike for you. But if you can, and you do more than 70% of the same thing, get something else. GT hit a good idea here, but frankly, bike won't change for this benchmark

All around sturdy bike. Feels great all around. Climbs, downhills and cross country. The I-drive works. Yes it does if your a non believer you havent ridden it enough.Buy it if you your not gonna piss and moan over a pound or two and if your an all around biker.
Weaknesses:
Heavy at times. But if you can't handle a few extra pounds.. get off a trial. Seat is not so comfy but if your hittin nice trails you shouldn't be on the seat much. Don't buy it if your into DH, its not set up for that. If you got the cash go higher up in model or try a bike with better components.
Similar Products Used:

Bottom Line:
This is a great value bike. Bit on the heafty side but a few pounds shouldn't matter. I-drive feels great all around and more so on terrain that testes your shocks. After ridding this bike with the I-drive for a good while you will notice the difference if you hop on any other. This bike is great right out the box. The newer model seams to be lesser in quality so you may want to opt for a higher model than the 4000. In time after I beat the crapp out of this bike on some nice trials I will upgrade to some higher end components and parts... can't wait!

A good bike for making the transition from hardtail to full sus, as it does ride as close to a hardtail as a full sus bike in this price range can get. Good points as listed above, in particular the I-Drive really does work (if you dot your I) and the Judys work second to none. Bad points are few and far between, but the STX-RC & Alivio drivetrain really does need upgrading ASAP (I'M currently saving for XT now) as it is really clunky, and missfires a lot in the lower gears if not serviced/adjusted regularly. The bike is quite heavy, but no more than a similar full sus bike.
Bottom line is that this bike does exactly what is expected of it and then some. Just lose the STX-RC ASAP.

Can't go wrong with the price on this baby. I picked mine up as a leftover 99 model. It's more or less the same bike as the 2000, only I saved a few hundred bucks. Super plush ride. I had an old GT hardtail which I liked a lot, but the ride is so much nicer on the XCR. If you don't have a lot of cash and want to go full suspension this is a great choice.
Weaknesses:
Some of the components were sub-par. I upgraded the derailleurs (front and rear) to XT, put on a Bontrager Race wheelset and changed the seat. I've heard people complain about the Judy C fork, but I have no complaints with it. Possibly my only gripe is the weight, but if you're that concerned about weight you shouldn't be buying full suspension.

Bike Setup:

Bottom Line:
Absolutely the best bike you can buy in this price range. Most of us don't have $1500 or $2000 to spend on a bike. Heck, the $1000 I spent (with above mentioned upgrades) nearly put me in the poorhouse. But I love it so much I honestly feel that it's the best $1000 I ever spent. The I-Drive is wonderful. If you haven't ridden one, do yourself a favor and get to your nearest GT dealer (no, I don't work for GT or a bike shop)and try it. Some people will complain about the components, but I suppose that's what happens at this price. My advice: chuck the derailleurs immediately, put on some lighter wheels and replace everything else as they break (if you abuse the bike properly they will).

GT's I-drive is a great design. Ride is great. Bike feels very solid. Shimano shifter works great and so does the Avid brake setup...it stops on a dime. Great price (I got the last 99' model for $699) I can't wait to go on a good hard ride to really thrash it, or more likely myself. Great entry level f/s bike. Good bang for the buck.
Weaknesses:
I just bought it from the local dealer in town and so far I haven't found any except the crap seat they put on it. My ass is killing me. The front derailer needed some minor tweaking, but it works great now. I'm a newbie, so this bike is a like a BMW compared to anything I've had before.

Bottom Line:
This is my first "real" mtn bike and it's been great so far. A few of my friends ride GT's w/ the i-drive and love them. I got a great deal on this 99' model and although it was still a little more then I wanted to spend, everyone tells me it's worth it for the f/s. I took it out on some trails the other day and on a short 12 mile trek on the road today. Aside from the hard ass seat, everything worked great. I had to mess with the front derailer a bit, but once I did, it worked great. I cleaned the bike thourghly, especially the gears and derailers and have been told by many that that is the secret to keeping everything working for a long time. I'm planning to get a new seat VERY soon and may possibly upgrade the derailers, if I have any more problems with them. The next thing to be replaced is the front springs possibly. It works great now, but feels a little soft. The stock springs in the Judy C are only rated up to 185, which is my weight, so I have them set as firm as they go. I also had to adjust the rear spring a little to align the i-drive up correctly. Make sure your dealer tells you about lining up the i-drive correctly for your weight. My dealer didn't, but I spent a couple of hours going through all the manuals for the bike and found out about it. If and when the rear shock goes out (and when I save the extra $250), I will replace it with an adjustable air shock w/ lockout. Other then that the bike is a great buy. I read a lot of reviews about concerns with the weight of the bike, but I don't think it's that bad. You can spend a lot more for a lighter frame, but it only saves a couple of lbs (BFD). Can't wait until next weekend to pull it out and do it again...my butt should be OK by then.

Seems to have trouble shifting from 1 to 2 in front. (I might just need to adjust it.) I did notice some bobbing when I was out of the saddle but I don't know how it would compare to other FS models. Feels heavy if you lift it (but see below).

Bottom Line:
I bought this bike in December on closeout. While it was sitting in my house I kept picking it up and wondering if I was crazy for buying such a heavy bike. I would go out to bike shops and just pick up other FS bikes to compare them. (The XCR-4000 doesn't seem significantly heavier than other bikes in its price range, but go up a few hundred dollars and the weights seem to drop dramatically).
Anyway, I finally got to ride it recently, when I took it to Tsali and Bent Creek in North Carolina. Out on the trail, it doesn't feel heavy at all. It climbs very well; I spent significantly more time sitting down, even on steep, rough ascents. On the downhills, the thing just flies. Shifting is very smooth except as noted above. Seems to be well-built. I took the obligatory falls (I'm new to clipless pedals) and the only thing I damaged was myself.

this bike is the bomb! it makes my hardtail feel like it's on square wheels. i put a profile stem and handle bar in place of the stock setup, and put on a z-2 bomber instead of the judy xc, and the crosslands. this took off a little weight. the ride is so smooth. i could take hills that were a problem on my hardtail, and i don't have to mention downhill.

Once you've had your screwdriver round the front mech everything works fine. The GT is actually lighter than the Carrera and the crappy Voodoo I tested. The I-drive certainly does add a little-something to the ride. The bike if very rigid and great for amateur downhill, it even climbs well (for a f/s bike).A great bike for those who like a bit of non-competitive riding (it probably isn't up-to-scratch for racing). Great vaule for about $8-900. The ony real weakness is the front shifting, which I think is combonation of the Derailleur moving in relation to the crank and the crankset(suntour) being a non-ramped one. The shifting acts a lot like my old touring bike, which was also a suntour that didm't have all of Shimano's innovations. Works fine if you pedal smoothly, but you can't force it like a more modern system. Also the shifter units themsleves are a litte stiff, i.e. they won't spring back unles you loosen up the nut that hold the pods on. Otherwise, a good value.

Similar Products Used:

Bike Setup:
Proflex
Bottom Line:
If this could have compared to the price and value of the Proflex I bought, I would have definitely gotten the I-drive. If you are interested, DO NOT BUY WITHOUT DOING THIS: tell the dealer that you researched and heard that the drivetrain - notably the derailleurs - sucks and you have been shopping around and this comparable bike (your choice) is a better value, but you really want the GT and then say you will only buy it if you can get the derailleurs switched out to XT's for free (go for that, but if they want to charge you, it should cost around $30 for an upgrade to both F/R d's). From what I have heard, the derailleurs go out real fast, so having your shop upgrade them before you buy is a MUST b/c they are much cheaper (due to trade in) and the shop installs them free so that you don't have to mess w/ all that wiring and routing stuff a week later when they break. The components here are compromised to give a great value on the suspension, and a great value it is! This bike is a blast to ride! If you do not keep a steady cadence when you are out of the saddle, though, prepare for biopacing like a mofo. With regards to the weight, it really feels well distributed on this design - I did not really notice it until I did research after my tests of this product, but prolonged testing would likely cause it to be much more apparent (i.e., more climbing time). However, if you are looking at this version of the bike, you probably do not have the lightest bike out there on the trails right now, so you can deal with it. The bottom line is this: ride an XCR and you will love it; the suspension is superb, it is a great value once you UPGRADE TO XT DERAILLEURS(!!!!), and extremely high weight is not even that noticeable. An excellent bike!!!

The bottom line is nothing more then, this is the greatest bike there is for the money. You get a very nice shock for the price, the amazing I-drive,( I'm sick of people saying that the I-drive does nothing. The only reason that anyone would say something like that is because they settled for something less. I recently broke my back shock, bad seal on it, but I have to ride my bike about 6 miles every day just for work, and because of the I-drive my chain staid tight, all the gears still work great, and I have riden it about 30 miles on a broken shock. I would like to hear anyone else say that they can do THAT!). The weight on this bike isn't as much as people think it is, it weighs in at a lot less then many of the full suspention bikes I have tried. The components are not all that great, but anyone that knows ANYTHING about bikes will tell you that most of the shimano derailures change not in quality, but mostly in how much they weigh. If you take good care of them, you will have little or no probs. The rear shock is nothing more then garbage, but it works. All around, this bike is the best you can get for the money. Its design is going to change how bikes are made, and I will bet that we will start to see a lot more bikes with ideas like the I-drive in the future. I think this bike deserves no less then 4 flamers, but because it has been so well to me, I'm giving it 5. GT all the way!!

I sold my MOAB to get a full suspension, and the GT had the sweetest ride. After the first ride, I couldn't believe the difference. The I-drive flies down the trails. It eats all bumps and jumps like a pro. Kinda bouncy up smooth hills, though. I wasn't worn out or sore the next day as I was on my hardtail. Pretty good bike for $1000. Paint quality could be better, though. Rear suspension pivots creak unless kept lubed.

I like this bike becauseof the speed you can get racing XC on this bike. With a DualSport bike like the LTS, you can end up riding into the travel, thus exerting more energy then needed. Yes, you can tighten up the shock, but it is still too big. The XCR with its well balanced susupension, and the i-drive, makes for a smooth, plush ride, for more speed. However the weight can be a problem, especially when climbing. The front derallieur is junk, so replace it quickly. Otherwise it is an exellent bike.

I've seen the Bottom bracket move while I'm pedaling and I can't beleive what I see the thing moves back and forth but I don't feel it... If I didn't see it with my own eyes, I wouldn't have even know the I-Drive was working....Great looks, Great company, but subtracting one star because it is so heavy... but then again what do you expect for under $900.00 and I-Drive...

U will have to be a very smooth rider , which demands U to be conscious at the way U peddle , and I didnt like that idea . The rear suspension overwhelms the front , accpunting for an imbalance ride . I dont exactly feel that the I drive technology does very much , it is probably just a gimmick , in fact the LTS seems better . It bobs more then other 4 linkages , yet arent as sensitive as they are ( aka FSR , LTS ) . Its also very heavy , but this can be forgiven at the given price . Definitely not a racy bike .
Overall , a good bike for its price . Great for weekend rides around town or rides in parks with the family . But take it down to a technical trail , U will find itdifficult even to keep up with your buddies . Hmm .... if U wanna race , look else where . If U wanna pose , looks else where . If U just want a fun bike , maybe U can look here .

I love this bike. It has the ability to make you look like you know what you're doing, even if you don't! Pivots squeek if you don't lube them regularly, but a shot of WD40 from time to time stops that. Only thing I didn't like are the ALivio shifters, which stick too much unless I loosen the screws which causes the casing to almost come off. My first full suspension bike and I am very impressed.

well, Ive put some miles on it, and this is an update from my previous posting. Overall I am pleased with the bike. Off road it handles VERY well. puts you in a real good position to handle obstacles. Real smooth pedalling technique is a must to let this bike show what it can do. If you stomp on your down stroke, and use a lot of pull up on the bars, its just ridicolously bad. What it does do well, is keep the distance of the cranks to the seat even reguardless of what the back wheel is doing, and also chain tension doesnt seem to fluctuate. Steering is neutral, a bit on the slow side compared to some other bikes. I have a heavier rear spring on order, so I can achieve proper preload without cranking down on the collar as much. My future upgrades for this bike, which I believe I'll be keeping, will be a new wheelset(so I can keep a set of road wheels instead of changing tires), clipless pedals, a new seat, and maybe some new cranks. It woud have gotten 5 big stars if it did what it claimed, but it gets 4 for a real good effort. FS without compromise isnt out just yet....

Bottom Line:
I am picking mine up this week. The bike I had been riding before this was a rigid Trek. While looking for a new ride, I had tried a used 98 model Super V. Maybe the setup was wrong for me, but the front shock seemed WAY too stiff. The test ride I took on the XCR was wonderful. Plush front end with no apparent bottoming, and the rear shock was set up perfectly for my 250 lb frame. I know I dont need a bike like this for the riding I am presently doing, but I would imagine I can ride a bike like this for much longer, and not be as fatigued from the pounding of a non suspended bike. Also, the creeper gears seem much lower than what Im used to. Good brakes, and room for component improvenemt next season (cranks, wheelset) I will post again after a few miles to give better feedback. But for now, it gets 5 stars. Oh, and to all those who claim bobbing on this bike....learn to spin real good. Do some serious road riding, and get the technique down, then give this bike another try.

Weaknesses:
A little heavy. Front derailer is junk!!!
Bottom Line:
I am a 29yo 175lb EVERY DAY warrior who loves the air up there and pushing the envelope!! In the short time that I have owned it, I have beaten this fine piece of machinery. It has been subjected to every condition imaginable and a triple dose of BIG-AIR. It handles the rutty, rocky down hills exceptionaly well and if you know how to ride an f/s, it climbs beautifully. Like me, if you love hitting the launch pads, you'll love the way it lands!! It's very predictable, reliable and forgiving. The i-drive performs great in all conditions. MONEY WELL SPENT!! If you have it properly adjusted and it still bottoms out then get with the program and get a heavier spring or loose some weight!!!Despite losing the bolt on the dog bone and having to upgrade the front derailer in the first few weeks I don't have a single complaint! I am very, very pleased with my investment!!!

Bottom Line:
This is a follow up to my initial review. Had the bike for close to 3 months. One bolt loosened up on the Dog bone, but after tightening, no problems. Like the bike so much, I raced it in the SRAM Sea Otter, beginners class. Race conditions ranged from soft mud to sloppy mud, to nice and easy packed soil. The suspension saved my butt numerous times, on the changing conditions. I had several flashes of brilliance due to the handling of the bike. I know it may be a heavy ride, I know it may not compare to a similar priced hardtail, but I know I was living large, secure in having a lot of fun, when I crossed the finish line. Big atta boy award to GT, for a fun bike. I didn't win in my class (train more!), but I definitely won, when I bought this bike. Big plug for the local bike shop, Sports Center Bicycles for helping me choose this bike!

I consider my recent purchase of a XCR4000 the best bike purchase I've ever made. I've owned alot of bikes in my day but this one is by far my favorite. My aching back, sore knees, and stiff ankles than kme ever so kindly. The ride is cadillac style. It smoothes out rocks and roots that normally shake your eyes out. I was at first a bit leary of the Judy C up front and the deluxe in the rear. First of all because I am a heavy rider. The large bike comes stock with a 700lb spring....I still upgraded to a 750 just to be on the safe side. The Judy is actually perfect! It needed nothing to handle my 6'5 270lb girth. The only parts I can see myself swapping out in the near future are the WTB raptor tires and the toe clip pedals. For less than a grand this bike awesome!

Super ,super plush. Rebounds very well. All those riders who think the rear suspension sucks just haven't dialed it in correctly yet. I'm a heavy rider (230 lbs), and I adjusted the preload to be a little stiffer- It's too sweet. Has basically the same frame geometries as the K2, but the I-Drive walks all over it. Has a Judy and a Deluxe on it, brakes are just fine- Will need to eventually replace stx/alivio components, but they should be good for a year or so of hard riding. Incredible deal for the money (about $900) and if you aren't so worried about super lightness, this is by far the best deal for the money.

Bottom Line:
Previous bike was a GT Timberline FS. Riding the XCR-4000 was a major improvement. The bike seems a little on the heavy side, but I like the way it rides. Keep in mind, my review is based on riding it at the dealer, and around the neighborhood. Things may be different, once I take it on some harsher terrain. I rode several 1998 leftovers, from Schwinn and Cannondale, but I could not get my desired frame size. The 98 models were definitely better bikes, and I would recommend searching for last year's models if you are on a budget. You will get more bike for the buck. In my case, the XCR-4000, was the bike that fit my price range, and EZ riding style.
