the iDrive. great platform to build an xc or am or even a dh bike.
Weaknesses:

Similar Products Used:

Bike Setup:
almost nothing is stock on this bike anymore! its now has shimano xt gears and derailers, fox float in the rear, rock shox judy psylo xc fork, bontrager race disc rims, michelin XCR xtreame tubless, avid juicy ultimate hydraulic discs using the Therapy Components disc converter (frame didnt have place for the discs) and cane creek headset.
hope to upgrade to new 09 fox float RPL rear shock and Vanilla RLC fork, plus switch to full XTR shifters and derailers and all this spring (well we will see about the xtr)
Bottom Line:
this bike is great. throw on clips and you will climb like crazy. you can leave it stock and it rocks. upgrade to all new parts and well it looks and rides like a dream. i will run this bike into the ground, and then ill just buy another frame and swap it all over!

Strengths:
The gusseting and welds are superiorly strong. SoCal old GT style. Slill taking huge jumps at fast on rocky Boulder,CO trails, even through built in the late 90's. Look's very aggressive and is very very aggressive. Climbs flawlessly with that I-Drive assist. Downhills flawlessly. Dual air SID shock is top shelf.
Weaknesses:
LX drivetrain needed upgraded. Rockshox Judy Race bottoms out when needing high performance. Stock brakes are questionable.
I have an old GT Avalanche hardtail and it may climb a bit better but the XCR 3000 is unbelievable. It may surprise some people. After upgrading parts on this bike, I will take it on any Colorado trail and it ain't messing around. This bike climbs uphill rocky trails with no problem. I have went over the handle bars several times and it even wipes you out well. The frame alone on this bike is worth more than I paid for it. I got hooked up and will roll this bike for years. If I break the frame I will be on Craigslist searching for the same same. I can't rate this bike high enough and recommend it for anyone looking to do agressive riding.

Very nice balanced bike. Smooth ride. Great looks
Weaknesses:
The weight. It's on the heavy side (comming from a previously owned hardtail).
Mostly standard. Judy 100's Aftermarket Azonic bar, seatpole, seat, pedals, front brake booster.
Bottom Line:
This from an intermediate weekend rider. I like this bike. I bought it second hand for $1500AU or approx ($800US). Love the way it climbs rocky trails and you can really shoot through single trails with tight corners. I've taken it off 4ft drops and it's childs play. I like jumps but Im not one for flying though. The weight of the bike does mean more work but if you've got plenty of upper body strength then you wont be effected to much when ridding tricky trails and jumping. From the reviews I've read, I'll keep my eye on the frame but it looks and feels in top condition. Feels very solid too. The I-Drive takes a little getting used to. I notice the granks swinging inside the system from time to time but you get used to it. Someone made a good point how this system probably adds to the wieght of the bike. If you got the tension up on the back spring, it does feel like a hardtail at times and there is little bounce when pedaling. This is why I liked it over other softies I've trial ridden. This is the 1st softail I've owned but I am most certainly happy with it. I think if you can shave as much weight as possible from the bike then it'll be heaps better and fun to ride. If you pick one up second hand at a price I bought it, or cheaper, then you got yourself a great buy in my opinion.

The bike is pretty smooth going down.(After you replace the fork and shock)
Weaknesses:
This bike is very heavy, It is no fun to have to ride it up a hill. It is fairly cheaply made, Thin metal at the important spots. The components on this bike are crap. The XT rear hub has got to be the most backward designed hub in the history of mountain biking. I have bent both rims to the point of replacement. The deore shifters have fallen apart. I have broken teeth off of the LX crankset. The LX rear derailer broke after five rides. I bent the syncros handlebar after a year. About the only thing that I haven't had to replace is the rear cassette.
Similar Products Used:

Bike Setup:
1999 Jr. T fork, fox vanilla RC shock, XT disc brakes, XTR front derailer, Shorter Bontrager stem, XT rear derailer.
Bottom Line:
After I put the fox vanilla RC on it became a new bike. It climbed better. It decended much better, but I still would not recommend An I-drive frame to anyone. These frames are so heavy you couldn't believe it. I broke my first frame after about a year. It broke at the upper shock mount. I am not that big of a person 6'4" 190lbs. I ride hard, but it is not like I was hucking it off of eight foot drops or anything like that. GT took so long to do anthing about the warrenty that I just went out and replaced it with a Santa Cruz Bullit. The Bullit frame weighs as much or even a little less than the GT frame. On top of that the Bullit even climbs better. GT just a few weeks ago replaced my broken frame with a 2001 I-drive 1.0. It looks to be much stronger than my old frame, but I need new upper shock bushing for either of my shocks to fit it and I have no idea where I am going to find those at. The bottom line about this whole story is stay the hell away from GT. The I-Drive was a good idea in theory, but does not help at all, it just adds weight. Save your money and buy a little better frame from a more reliable company. All I have had with this frame is problems and trouble. Screw GT!!!

I am not a hardcore DH rider or do insane things on this bikes. Just like to give the equipment a rough ride. I have had to replace almost everything on this bike, the only thing original is the frame, seat post, handle bars and stem. It's not the bike shops fault. All components have failed and broke. Not made for free riding, it will last for a while but don't expect more than a summer. Bit of a pig on the hills, but it does give you a good ride and control on the downhill. The I Drive needs loads of TLC, grease disappears quick, keep that thing greased. I've had to take it apart and rebuild it with better lube. Rear shock has just torn apart, also sheared bolt off holding rear shock to frame. It was good to me but time for a change (an upgrade). It's a good bike for the price, but not if your hard on equipment and don't expect to spend money replacing parts.

But this bike does do the trick. My jr. t could run over small children, and makes a big difference on downhills, To anyone who doesnt like the way this bike descends i would recomend getting a fork with more travel or buy a downhill specific bike. Overall 3 chilis for the poor component selection, some people actually paid 1200.00 for this bike and i think they deserved more for their money. When I first got this bike my friends called it the couch, and laughed that all I needed was a remote and a place for your drink and you were ready to watch the tube. Great bike compared to what I had been riding before. This bike has fallen off of my rack on the interstate and lived--just a few scratches--amazing---GReat for downhill, but slower on the up hill.. Luckily I have not had any problems with a hanger breaking, however, I have had the i-drive replaced twice--which by GT standards, I have been the only one---When in actuality the bushings just needed to be replaced. I have had the bushing replaced about every year...My Judy 100 blew during a two day wet ride and my Rock Shox rear blew after returning from Jamaica. Could have been from releasing the shock for packing and air travel..This frame and the i-drive has been great--I would like to eventually get a new frame, since I have been upgrading as components have worn out. HOwever, this frame and I have been through so much, I would hate to give her up... I recommend this bike for the weekend warrior and up and coming racers..

After one year I,ve gone through 6 hangers. Rebuilt the eccentric twice and the seat tube is cracked or at least the paint shows it as well on other parts of the bike. Something is very wrong if after a 3 foot drop on a 2 hour old hanger that it breaks. 40 bucks each! Same drop 3 times and each time it broke and it was not hit or bent before.. Fairly stock.. new saddle, Raceface crank, Tioga DH 2.1 tires, Raceface riser bar,
Bottom Line:
Overall the bike tracks down root filled trails well but could use a slacker head tube angle. A fun bike to ride and good for tight technical trails and fast smooth descents, I,ve hit 75 on some rocky fire roads and it stuck with me. Droping 4-6 foot to flat pavement and the bike took it well but, repeated abuse will wreak it. Usual rides are hard trails on the shore or SFU and urban stuff. If you ride but not into big rock drops and jumping stairs then it's a great bike. I've outgrown mine after a year and am ready to buy a full free ride bike that can handle hard hits and drops a better than the 3000. I recommend this bike to the weekend rider that wants to blow away the hard tail bro's on the descents and keep up to them on the climbs. Very good value for the money. I wish GT would send me some drop outs.I'm looking at buying a DH-i, this is the only level to go after a XCR and it has that great i-Drive system.

Has proved to be reliable in the 25 months in my possession, only two problems (see below). I am very satisfied with my purchase.
Weaknesses:
I have ridden this bike in CA, TX, NY and for about 1.5 yrs in Mexico. In all that time I only broke the upper shock bolt, which was replaced at my local bike shop free of charge (GT warranty had lapsed about a year previously, but they GT still replaced it). Also my size Large was shipped with the "wrong" spring rate. Soft, is not very fun with a rider that needs a large bike. Judy 100 with firm springs is way too flexy, but med is good compromise
Similar Products Used:

Bike Setup:

Bottom Line:
This Large bike weighed in at 33.0 lbs stock. Which is fine. I like to have fun and find that it is easier and more desirable for me to lose 5 lbs from my gut than from my bike. Will eventually upgrade fork. RS deluxe shock will go when it fails as I am happy with it despite its portly countenance. GT warranty is great (see post here 11-27) No probs with my Zaskar LE or this bike except above. Very good value. Minus 1 chili for delivery of bike with Judy 100 with soft spring (on Large bike)

Strengths:
"reasonably priced"
Weaknesses:
1. Weight - My medium sized bike weighted about 30 lb. with OEM gear
2. Bushings - The rear swingarm has pressed in bushings that ware out quickly. This causes the reared travel and power distribution to be sloppy (and noisy!). I have replaced them 3 times for 00’! They should have used a ball bearing based design. In 00’ this changed at least for the XCR 1000 and up. I hope they implement this with the 01’ models
3. Advertised Travel- GT Claims that all of their XCRs has 4.6’ of travel. This is true if the 6.5’ eye-to-eye shock removed. With the original Rock Shox Deluxe rear shock, the bike only had 3´of travel with the spring completely removed!
4. Frame Cracked- A weld in the seatpost mask developed a hairline crack. On a possessive note, GT will be delivering a complete 01’ assemble for free. The new frame/shock/swingarm, should weight 1.5 lb lighter
Similar Products Used:

(dropped three pounds with this gear alone) An air fork and shock would have dropped another 2 lbs.
Bottom Line:
My XCR has served a long journey of drop-off, jack hammer descends and typical cross country adventures. It has been an OK bike overall. As many new products suffer from fundamental design flaws during initial product roll-out, the 3000 line of bikes differentially had its share of flaws. I understand that GT was trying to “target” the lower end of their customer base, but I think there stooped to low in the quality department when developing the XCR 3000.
I had a few unpleasant experiences with the service department when I was having swingarm bushing troubles. Warehouse personal would send only one side of the bushing or perhaps the wrong parts lengthening the mean time to repair.
I will have to say that GT is very cool for sending out a 01’ assembly in response to my hairline crack. I am getting an upgraded shock and swingarm because of it. I hope that I do not have the problems I had with the 99’ frame with the 01’ XCR 3.0.
Lastly, GT should be more honest about there frame specifications. They should be advertising the actual travel of their rear suspension assembly as is. Not with the shock removed from the bike! And or, the Dealers should be more honest with there Customers about the products they sell.

Bottom Line:
After just one week of use the seals on the forks had blown. I got them replaced and within a week they had blown again. I would swap the forks for a pair of marzocchi z1's or judy race's right away. The forks could also do with some adjustable dampening. I mean if you can adjust the rear why not the front?
The rear suspension was set up at the LBS and is very smooth on the downhill but bobs a lot on the flat. It does stiffen up if you stand and lean over the front but this causes the rear to break loose on gravel or mud. The dampening on the shock is not enough to handle anything big and I just left the dial turned all the way up. Considering I only weigh 55kg this is surprising. The bike is very heavy for something you are supposed to ride XC.
I would buy a higher level XCR if you wanted one because they come with the lighter frame design and a air shock. This model seems like a half-hearted downhill design being marketed for XC.

IDRIVE does what it claims. This bike climbs like a champ, and no squeaks and creaks like the FSR's I see(hear before seeing) all over the place.
Weaknesses:
Slightly on the heavy side. GT is in the process of mending that. As a new design the earlier bikes were purposely "overbuilt" to reduce chance of frame failure. They are getting lighter each year. Besides, what do you want for around 1000 bucks? Components could be better, and are getting there as the years progress, but yocan still upgrade for less than the price of a 1000 model.
Full XT setup, and SID front fork (got lucky when I bought it. Some knuckle head traded the SID off of a XCR 1000 for the Judy 100). Still have the STX shifters and front derailer.
Bottom Line:
This bike Kicks Serious Tail. I ride about 5 days a week in Wood Canyon (where the designer of the IDRIVE lives and rides) This bike does everything it was designed to do. It climbs like a hardtail, and in alot of cases better. By keeping the rear wheel on the ground I am able to get up and over rocky sections that are difficult at best on my hardtail. This thing downhills like a champ. I regularly power down the same stuff the Freeride guys are riding, and have often passed them by. If you want a great "dualie" for a great price, go for this one. It may take some time to get used to it, but once you do (and get in shape) you'll never go back. Some of the complaints I have read here sound like they come from lack of practice not shortcmings of the machine. Practice, and stick it out, and you will find this bikes FULL Potential.
PS-I have kicked alot of hardtail behinds (no pun intended) on this bike, and finished feeling stronger because I didn't have to take the full abuse of every little rut, and bump onthe trail. Long live GT.

Componets aren't awesome (stx, lx) but they get the job done. I haven't broken anything except for that bolt and that could have something to do with that accidental 5 foot drop off. I got it online for $899 so i am more than happy with it. The 4" up front and the 4.6" in the rear does the job well. For the weight weenies it might be a little heavy..... doesn't bother me though. Bottom Line:
Hot bike and it is so plush! When I used to go downhill with my old hardtail, I got a sore back the next day. No more! With the GT XCR-3000, even the toughest trails made my back a happy camper. The bike is definitely a keeper with only 1 exception. The bike's derailleur hanger shredded right out (Yes!!) on my very 1st ride in Alice Lake down at Squamish BC. I did not crash, did not hit any tree branches nor did I abuse the bike (I usually don't push the bike 100% before I work out the kinks). And on the very first relative steep hill after a few easy downhill section even a huffy can clear, I applied a couple of power strokes to my pedals to test out the I-Drive hype. A loud snap followed by my back wheel playing the guitar tune seized my bike and I fell. What a piece of JUNK! I've aced this hill many times with my Giant ATX-780 and my XT derailleur no problem. But if my GT XCR-3000 can't even take this, how am I going to ever trust this bike on more technical trails?
Now to the warranty problem. First, I bought the bike from Maynards in Vancouver, a liquation warehouse for a very good price. They were liquidating the bikes from a bike store called Big Daddy in Surrey. Suffice to say, the bike was brand new and was assembled right out of the box for me. Maynards says there is no warranty, but I say technically, since the bike is new and Big Daddy was the dealer for this bike, GT should honor the warranty. I am awaiting for GT's Rep for BC, Canada a reply and I hope it is promising. I hope that a current GT dealer which I have good association with will help me with my problem. Anyhow, I am extremely dissappointed with this 1999 GT XCR 3000 and am not confident to recommend this bike to anyone who ride hard. I am a light rider, weighing in only 150lbs. The piece of the derailleur hanger that is still attached to the frame is very thin metal, thinner than the derailleur hanger on my Giant ATX-780. Is GT shaving weight on this part and is that why it shredded right off its post?
I am going to give my rating to 0.5 chillies (since the lowest is 1 here) until I can resolve this warranty and product defect issue. I hope GT Canada is listening and would please get back to me ASAP. I can not wait for 1 month for that derailleur hanger like some guy in Squamish that had exactly the same problem as mine.
Thank you.
Btw, this is no a flame on the bike. This is a real experience and should be a warning to those who already own the bike to check the derailleur hanger for sign of stress.

Strengths:
My 1999 XCR-3000 has an amazing feeling of 'potential energy', meaning, it wants to take off the minute you sit down! Since I-drive allows for higher gears vs. other bikes under equal terrain, Bio-pacing can be minimized even further by grabbing a higher gear. (But it's not enough even to worry about!) The way the rear shock is set up, it seems to simulate a hard tail until you hit terrain needing rear shock absorbtion. This is a great advantage and mostly supports the "no bio-pacing" claim from GT. I really looked at the amount of welds and what direction they're pointing when I first bought this bike. The look is clean and the geometry of the bike makes good common sense when viewing the bike for strength factors. "It looks strong!"
Weaknesses:
The crankset looks and is heavy! (I'm jealous of the 2000 models' "Hollowtech" crankset.)and lighter rims. I'm glad I bought a 1999 model since the color scheme for the 2000's is 'tacky' in my opinion! GT needs to provide a wider selection of color schemes for their products! "like all black!!". Also, only the XCR-2000 and up have stainless steel main bearings and anything lower has the teflon coated brass bearings which I've been warned about for water riding! I don't do much h20 riding, so I can't comment on Judy 100's problems with water that I've been reading!
Similar Products Used:
I was so impressed with the bike, I bought my Fiance` a XCR-4000!!! "Judy XC long travel" = Nice looking shock/Bike!!
Bike Setup:

Bottom Line:
The I-drive concept is a success. GT needs to concentrate on offering more diverse option packages going forward for each level of XCR. (i.e. color choice, crankset choice and shock choice (SID vs. Judy). Right now, there are no alternative options for different components for any XCR unless you customize yourself after purchase. As well, there is only two choices for colors. They should offer 6 choices; "2 of their original choices and 4 different 'solid' color choices (i.e. black, white, blue and red)" All in all, I love my 1999 XCR-3000 and I urge people with "older model" dual shock bikes to give it a spin!

Overall I like the bike but I there are several things that keep me from loving it. No matter how you adjust them - the forks are junk - a pogo stick bounces less. I'm going to have to check out the mods that a previous writer suggested cuz they just wont do as is. The stx shifters are junk - I am constantly getting stuck between gears and having to feather the levers in order to get rid of that grinding chain noise. I guess it could be the LX rear derailleur, but I doubt it. The SDG saddle is like a vinyl covered rock - the Body Geometry seat is already on order.
Now for the good stuff - the iDrive seems to work well although I'm not sure if its that big of a deal. The Sun Tour cranks are under rated - I think they work well and havent noticed any creaking (yet, knock on wood). The stx front derailleur worked great once I got it adjsuted properly. The Avid brakes work very well. The Rock Shock rear shock is great - especially considering my size.
I paid too much but it was in stock and ready to ride - out here that means alot. I think with a little tweaking it will be a great bike. Start with the forks - if you are a big guy - dont leave the shop without stiffer springs at least.
Bottom line: Very good bike, but not great as is . Unless your paying well under a grand for it and dont mind upgrading and tweaking - I would ride a few others to be sure.

Scary, steep, rooty, muddy, torturous, but fun as hell. When you have to do the first maintenance on the RS Judy 100 fork or if you want to upgrade the springs (doesn't really help). I would replace all the internals with Englund Total Air cartridges! The new ones are reliable, easy to service, are wicked light (save over a 1/2 pound off the weight!). It basically turn it into a SID w/100mm of travel for only $89. The guys at BPP (http://www.bppbike.com) are awesome and if you have any problems they hook you up tommorrow not a couple weeks later like RS!. A SID 100 cost $550 and the only difference is the alloy steer tube and you don't have to work for NASA to service it. 15 minutes from teardown to relube, back together, and setup. Just need a pump thats all. I replaced the rear shock with a FoxShox Vanilla Float R (loses air) which eliminated all the problems I had with the RS Deluxe, which sucked after the first time I raced it. Highly reccommend upgrading the rear shock. Well to wrap this up I finally broke the frame by the Eccentric. A small little crack nothing major. GT warrantied it even though my dealer knew I raced and beat the piss out of it. I upgraded to a XCR-1000 for $270 more. GT is the bomb. I would highly reccommend the XCR-3000. I ride like a retard and the frame held up awesome. Later!

The bottom line is this bike rules! They have made the bike tons lighter with the SID rear shock. Right out of the box there really isn't much to up grade right away. The only bad thing is Rock Shox should provide its air shock customers with a standard shock pump. This bike is nice, even though I have only had it just a little while. Well, out of the box the bike can use some work, but what bike for $1300 doesn't? My first upgrade was the drivetrain. Everything except for the Crank, BB, and hubs are XT. Then I upgraded the Crank. At first I was going to go with XT or XTR, but then i realized how much a new big ring cost. So i just bought an LX (lighter than XT anyway). It's not as strong as XTR but saved me a lot of money. With all of this money I saved I bought a Cane Creek AD-10 rear shock. (I like this better than the fox RC, I think it gives a better ride). What ever your preference is definately get a new rear shock. It really lightens up the bike a lot. I also got a pair of Spin wheels. You might think that they are heavy, but THEY ARE LIGHTER THAN THE STOCK X-221s!!! The Spins are a little over 1100 grams (rear), the Mavics, and STX-RC hub, and spokes are 1300grams. Now the bike rides like a dream. Great shifting drivetrain, better crank, great climbing thanx to the i drive and Cane Creek, and I will never have to true my wheels again. All in all this bike rules.

After having my beloved Trek 7000 stolen out of my basement(#$!&ING THIEVES!!), I decided to go the full suspension route. I'm glad I did because the GT is one awesome bike. It seems more of a freerider than XC, but it excels at both. The 4 inches of travel in the front and back let me go down near vertical chutes and have complete control throughout. The first time out I hated the weight, but than I got used to it (what's a couple pounds anyways?) Now I firmly believe that this bike rocks. It is very plush going through all sorts of nasty bumps and rocks. I can hold a line through just about anything. Wherever I want to go this bike can take me. 5 CHILES for an awesome bike.

My first GT was the RTS-2 I purchased in college. I beat on it pretty bad, lots of rough riding and a couple of NORBA seasons. Then I moved to Guadalajara (from California) and in the summer of 1998 I managed to crack the frame on my trusty RTS-2 mount near the bottom bracket. I flew to San Diego for the warranty details (GT warranty is awesome). Anyway, I ended up with the XCR-3000 which is a huge improvement over the RTS-2. It is comfy to ride, and yet you can still get agro. The Judy 100 has given me a few problems with setup and now needs an overhaul, but I am very satified with the RS deluxe rear shock (despite its weight). Honestly, for the money I think GT did it perfectly. This is the kind of bike I should have bought to begin with. You see, GT was nice enough to give me a 1998 Zaskar LE frameset in lieu of my cracked RTS-2. So I now have a kickass Zaskar/easton carbon/azonic slalom bike to complement my XCR-3000 smooth speed machine. I highly recommend this approach!

I forgot to say last time that I replaced the hard saddle with a Serfas anatomically correct saddle with the deep grove. It makes riding much more enjoyable.
Bottom Line:
In my first review of this bicycle I said: For those having trouble with the front derailleur, I haven't had any trouble at all. I now retract that. I did have some trouble with it after I had a pretty good tumble. Apparently it can't take a little jarring because after the tumble, even though I would properly adjust it, somehow the set screw became too loose and it wouldn't be long before the derailleur was out of whack again. Therefore I upgraded to the Shimano Deore XT. The rear derailleur got bent in the tumble but my bicycle mechanic just straightened it out and it works fine! I will eventually replace the Judy shocks. Probably with Marsoki Bombers I also said in my first review: I'm getting a second one for my girlfriend. Well, I did, and she says that even though she liked her Diamondback she's absolutely thrilled with her XCR-3000. I still give it a 4 chilli pepper rating because of the weight and because I don't think that the derailleur is up to snuff for a bicycle in this price range . . . Again I say: IT'S A GREAT BIKE! Great riding and handling bike. On the heavy side, but I-drive efficiency offsets the weight somewhat. Ask your dealer to upgrade the Judy 100. Even with heavy weight oil the Judy rebound feels like someone hitting your handlebar with a hammer. Hopefully GT will use a different fork in 2000 that has rebound adjustment and weighs less. Just switching to a Manitou SX shaved 1/2 lb. Be sure to line up the dots on the I-drive while you're at the dealer to see if you need a higher rated spring on the Rock Shox deluxe. The stock spring is for lightweight riders. With a decent front fork this is a fun, bombproof ride that is easy to tune!

Clean when you buy it under all the makeup lights. Fun to ride. Balanced very well.I love the bike, just have a few words because of my need for a shock upgrade. One extra thing: I wheeled and dealed it down to $849. I hope it was a very good deal. The GT site says its manufacture sugg. price is $1,549.
Weaknesses:
The shocks just flat out is not good. I can't figure out why Mr. Turner wouldn't put better springs on the bike that is so up to date. The front shocks should be thrown as far away as you can. I really appreciate giving you all my money for a bike that can't even hold a 150Lb rider you .I am sorry, I am just bitter my dealer wouldn't let me get the tires dirty. I would have demanded a shock upgrade, and probably could have pulled it out of them if I new the shock was so plush feeling. I just needed a more dampening feel.

When you test ride the bike in a smooth parking lot, the bike feels like 20-25Lbs. It is far from it.Thanks for building a good bike and making it look like you spent some time on the thiing.Gave it a big fat 5 star because I am going through my cognitive dissonance and want to think I purchased the perfect bike.

I'm a 40 something weekend warrior just trying to get back into shape. I can tell you that this bike is definitely plush which is exactly what MY soft tail needs. Cornering is great. Acceleration is fabulous: the chain stays taught and responsive without a hint of slack even over bumps and dips. For those having trouble with the front derailleur, I haven't had any trouble at all. The shop where I purchased mine is run by two guys who are avid cyclists themselves. They KNOW how to set up and tune a bicycle. When I returned it for it's first tune up it was virtually in mint condition (with a little added trail dust). My point: If it's set up right the first time you shouldn't have any trouble with it. The only reason I gave it a 4 chilli pepper rating instead of 5 is because of the weight. Even so I'm getting a second one for my girlfriend. She loves mine. I have a hard time keeping her off it. I really like this bike allot. I-drive is by far the best full suspension system period. Great looking too, turns heads wherever I go. Flys on the jumps and downhills. This bike rocks for the price. Upgrades were minimal and cheap. The complaints about the front shock are unfounded. I am 180 and 5'11 and it may seem soft to a greenhorn but I get about 3.5 of travel out of this badboy. It is extremly well balanced. Once you get used to a long travel fork you will love the softness. This is how a fork is supposed to work. Flex's at speed in the corners though. Nothing a brake booster can't fix (hey they are only $13 and weight a couple of grams). All told my large weights a little over 26lbs. Tony says there great and I agree.

The things have motorcycle spokes on them for crying out load. This bike is amazing. XCR-3000 with Judy 100. The rest of the bike is decked out. Weighed in at 26 but felt like 36.
Bottom Line:
I want a good all around ride. Much to difficult on long climbs.Down hill so good almost forgot about the difficult climbs. Best downhiller ever. Bad climber. Hey.. at least I am getting a good workout.

The bike is the Cadillac of downhill bikes...It handles the downhill beautifully, handling both loose terrain and large divets in the road. I've taken two hard falls already and it's still in one piece. I ride very hard and everything is fine so far. The only real problem with the bike is on the uphill. It weighs 30 lbs.. Overall, it's a great bike if you ride hard and want control on the downhill.

Well this is for all thos epeople out there who complained about the wieght.ITS THE FIRST YEAR!So the wieght will go down besides you can upgrade to make it lighter. Also the shocks can be upgraded. The i-drive that has the bombers and the fow air on the rear gave the plushest ride also these two shocks work really well together and they are both very strong. All and all this bike is like riding on a cloud. When I have enough money its going to be mine. Some of the upgrades I would suggest are Race face I would not go any other way. Also Rino light rims will give you a totally different feal to the rear end of the bike it will give you better turning and will remain true for longer. So in the end this bike is awsome with some upgrades and such it will even be better.G.T. keep up the good work. But I would still wait a year on this new product just to be sure.

GT's Independant Drivetrain ROCKS - tracks the trail like you wouldn't believe. Frame is built like a tank. I go out of my way to pound this bike and it loves it. Floating URT rear with non-moving BB is the absolute dogs bollox. I don't care who says what, this design is killer.
Weaknesses:
Judy 100's need setting up from stock. OEM Rear spring is too light (for me at 73 Kgs) - although I do go for a bit of air time.
Similar Products Used:
You name it. Specialized FSR's, Mongoose NX 9.5, Scott Octane FX2, most of the Marin range, heaps of GT's (GT's rock !), Foes Weasel, KeeWee DH, DBR V Link....etc etc etc.
Bike Setup:
Mainly stock so far.CNC Aluminium Tektro Brake Booster - a must (cures fork flex).Replace the OEM fork oil with racing stuff (I use Bell Ray) and replace the fork springs with after market progressive ones, rather than linear items (sorts the front end).I found the stock 600 Lbs spring too light (I'm 73 Kgs), so I've now got a 700 Lbs on the rear. The Rock Shox Deluxe shock doesn't take much preload, or it kicks back - this is design fault - I've had it on good authority. KEEP the Rear preload under 4 turns, or you'll blow the shock apart !!!New light weight wheels coming shortly - either Chris King's, or Cane Creek - anyone with advice on this front please E-mail me.
Bottom Line:
This bike goes off. It's not the lightest stock - but I'm gonna get it to around the 25 - 27 Lbs mark (stock 30.5 Lbs), but it's built for abuse, loves to hammer gnarly terrain, it's the Jumping, bunny hopping, nose wheelie, slamming King of 2 Wheels bar none - I've never ridden anything that jumps and wheelie's like this is not good. All in all, if you want a really fun rig, that's gonna take the abuse, buy this bike. Throw a little $$$ at it and you can turn it into a reasonably light weight weapon...that's my goal....new wheels soon.

I'd been looking for an FS for a while and was immediately taken by the looks of the GT, and not so much taken in by the i-drive banter. In one weekend I test rode the Marin East Peak (various sizes) and then took a XCR 4000 outshortly after. The Marin had my vote. There was little bobbing when pushing hard, or standing. While the 4000 leapt up and down like a pogo stick, even with the spring wound up. It was when I was invited to test the 3000 that all was revealed. Yep it needs the damper pre-load adjuster, which the 4000 doesn't have. The Judy 100's are too soft for me and I'm not a heavy rider. All in all this machine has transformed my riding. IBOTTOM LINE: If you want one, either get a higher model (3000 up) or upgrade the rear shock. The fronts are way too soft for my liking and aren't going to get any harder as they wear in, so go for harder coils and maybe up the oil. But you will need to learn how to adjust your ride to FS. Oh yes, the i-drive, I think it makes a difference(!). MY ONE REGRET: I bought the Hot Mango colour. It attracts wasps like a thing that's very attractive to wasps! - But all the same, a beautiful ride.

I like this bike for one big reason, the I-drive. This new suspension technology is everything GT claims. Smooth pedal action even with the cheap cranks (Race Face or XTR upgrade recomended). Brakes work very well. Bike screams for wider tires but clearance makes it impossible to go wider. The Judy 100 tends to dive too much but some Speed Springs should cure that. Removable deraileur hanger a good touch. Pedals work great. Shifting is precise. What else can you ask for? And for those who think it's too heavy: If you can't handle a 31 lb. bike, I have a BMX for sale..........

I've also upgraded the saddle. All my upgrades were done because I am a 5'9 240 lb. rider. Bottom line, this bike is a wonderful, all-around (downhill, climbing, XC) bike that's worth every penny. I would think the average rider of my height would weigh at least 20 pounds more than me, and if the fork is this bad for me id hate to see someone of that weight ride it. in spite of the fork i ll give it four chilis because im very happy with the rest of the bike

This bike really did not impress me. The combination of the low-travel coil/oil rear shock made the i-drive unnecessary on this bike. This bike did not handle nearly as well as the GT XCR-2000 that I purchased. The cheap off-brand crank on this bike began to squeak after the first few rides. The bike as a whole rode worse than any other full suspension that i have ridden so far. The only decent part of this bike it its frame. I was overall disapointed that for the money slightly nicer components were not put on this bike.

Bottom Line:
I bought an XCR 3000, the other day, having ridden a demo XCR 4000 last August and loved it. The 3000 is quite a bit better and I must say it absolutely goes off. The Rear suspension, with the I-Drive bottom bracket feels a little weird at first (I came off riding an LTS for a wee while and I've ridden a lot of other full suspension bikes), but now that I'm starting to get used to it, it's very impressive. You can comfortably stand up whilst climbing and really put the power on and the rear end tracks very well and doesn't bob under pedalling as much as any other bike I've ridden. Off road, going over obstacles, the rear end allows you to keep the power on, with the rear end tracking very well and soaking the bumps up. The Rock Shox Judy 100's at first felt a little light in terms of damping and spring weight, but once the preload is adjusted and you get used to them, they are again VERY good, particularly at soaking up small ripples and hits. The weight of the bike is a little heavy, but I believe that's due to the componentry rather than the frame, so with a bit of swapping over time, it's quite feasible to get it to around 22 to 24 pounds. The Avid brakes are another impressive item, and all in all they perform every bit as good as (if not slightly better than) Shimano's XT V-brakes which I've used a lot.All in all, a VERY impressive bike. Handles like a dream and effectively gets you a full suspension rig without most people's complaint - rear end movement under pedalling.....well done GT, you've really done your homework. It will be interesting to see if they can shrink the size of the bottom bracket in future versions.

The GT XCR 3000... Hmmm, what to say about it? The suspension is so plush it puts new cannondales and specialized's to shame. The judy 100 has a little bit of flex but a break boost took care of that. This bike comes with everything you could want for a average priced bike. It also has the most wicked upgrade ability since your rear suspension is light years beond the closest competitors.

Bottom Line:
I test rode the GT XCR 3000 for two hours in September when it first came out. Needless to say it came home with me after the test ride. So far I’ve put around 300 miles of just single track on it. Coming from an Y-frame let me tell you this is a dream come true. The I-Drive has all the plushness in the world without taking from your pedal power. The only bobbing is coming from your body bouncing up and down, not from the pedaling. The bike climbs like a hardtail in the sense of the power going to the pedal, but it stills has the suspension. And the reason nobody list the weight is because it’s HEAVY. The 3000 comes in at 31lbs for all those trying to find out. I say ride it and ask yourself “Do I race?”. Cause if you don’t this is the bike for you. I plan to race, but it will be done on a hardtail. When you see the top riders racing on a cross-country full suspension let me know. About the heavy side, look at the construction. This is a very solid bike, my Fisher Y-Frame was very flexible and I managed to bust three welds on it in seven months. With compliments to the JUDY 100, The XCR handles like a dream. The XCR takes the turns, the sharp descents and climbs with a perfect balance. The cables are not sealed and will seize up after a wet ride. And I got this small clicking noise from the ‘Dog-Bone’. One more thing, Get rid of the stock wheels! Put the stock wheels on your old bike or sell them to a buddy and get a lighter wheelset with some good tires. You can do this for around two hundred dollars. This is the first and smartest upgrade you can do. Overall, I love my bike and look forward to ride it. Let this be your first FS and don’t get caught up in the Y-Frame crowd.

I thnk that the XCR 3000 is a great bike. It rides like a dream, with very little pedal induced bobbing, about 89%less than less than most full sus. w/ out i. drive. It shifts smoothly, and easily. The Judy 100's are extremely plush and resonsive. (I would like fork boots though). When I first got it i thought that I would need to replace the butted handelbar but I have come to realize that they give the bike a much more agressive, and responsive riding position. My only complaint is that the 2nd watterbottle is in a bad place and with my rear pack i am unable to use it.

I recently purchased my new GT in the first week of Dec. I have had it about 3 weeks now and am quite impressed with the frame design. I ride about 4-5 times a week so I have put the bike through the tests and it still works great. I been riding in mud, creeks, and various muck as well as doing technical and have yet to have had a problem with the I-Drive assembly. No noises no nothin. Can't compare to other full-susp. bikes cause this is my first one.Previous bike was GT Avalanche. The bike came with alivio cranks which my bike shop swapped up to Syncros with Black spire chainrings(sweet) 20-32-42. I weigh 215lbs so the rear 700 x 1.5 spring was changed after my first ride to 800,could have even gone 900, and the judy 100's is not good for my weight. I am still waiting for rockshox to get me the heavy springs.(have already been over the bars twice cause they bottomed out). The bike , a large, weighed in at 28.5 lbs with new cranks etc. Climbs well but does bobs when pedaling in a low gear to spin, not bad in higher gears. Can only give the bike 4 chillies cause how many 165lbs guys ride a large frame( I could be wrong ) wish it was done out for heavier guys cause the spring upgrades cost $120Can
