Submitted by Daryl Roberts a Racer from Webster, Texas
Date Reviewed: February 14, 2001
Favorite Trail:Rocky Hill Ranch (Smithville)
Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $900.00
Purchased At:The Bike Co
Strengths:Breezer style dropouts. Great welds. 853 Steel. Stratos Pro w/lockout (rear shock). Charcoal color option.
Weaknesses:Needs S-bend seat stays. The rear brake has to hang out to far. Need to chase the Bottom Bracket before sending out. Steel is corrosive (had to sand and repaint some spots after a 24-hour race). The wait for the frame. Need to route the cables like Litespeed. Need to drop the weight.
Similar Products Used:None Similar.
Bike Setup:Full XTR 8-speed. (stayed with the better shifting 8-speed) Thomson stem and post. Noleen Mega-air Fork. Time ATAC Carbon pedals. Easton Ea-70 bar. Titec Bar-ends (short) XTR Hubs w/Mavic 517 rims. Hutchinson Python Air-lites. Ringle Slamma Jamma headset. Avid Cables (brake & Der.)
Bottom Line:This is a great Bike when you have the right components. I truly think that DEAN puts quality work into their frames at a little less expensive than the Moots or Merlin brands. I will definitly buy another DEAN, but next time it will be titanium. I love the way this bike gives you the cushion to take off the edge of the rugged terrain. I can honestly say that this frame is worth the wait or price.
