Strengths:
Lightweight for what it is, can take a hit, rims have stayed true despite abuse, fork adjustability is useful. Can't fault the rear shock. Shifting is good despite the mech taking hard hits, SRAM is quite impressive after having always used Shimano. Brakes are also quite good for a low end hydro setup. Very versatile bike.
Weaknesses:
Feels cramped for top tube length. Bottom bracket clearance is an issue when sagging on the shock, pedal often scrapes on the ground. Comes with clipless pedals. French valves, why? Stock tyres aren' great. Brake rotors were never straight.
Similar Products Used:
Giant Trance, Giant Reign (just a quick test ride).
Bike Setup:
Maxxis Minion on the front, DMR V8 pedals, replaced the flimsy 3rd chainring with a bashy. Cut the seatpost so i could drop it for doing DH.
Bottom Line:
Although i'm talking about the 08 Pitch Pro, its prettymuch identical to the 09. This bike is versatile! I use it for all types of riding. It pedals well on the uphill xc, does beautifully on the steep technical xc stuff, right at home on flowing singletrack, and is surprisingly competent on the DH and freeride stuff. I have put it through some drops of 6 foot and it handles it fine. The rims have stood up to bad landings very well, there is virtually no evidence of the wobbles.
After a bit of getting used to the shorter top tube feel, and adjusting pedalling style to avoid pedal scraping, I am reasonaly happy with my purchase. A great all round bike at a good price point.

Weaknesses:
Front wheel now has developed a looseness around the spindle are.Bike shop says 'this is normal'-I don't think so!Front brake- I hit a rock which cAused the front nipple to come loose.Result no front brake going down a rocky hill section.Easy repair. Rear brake cable bust, the cable hangs under the frame so is suspect to 'snagging',I pulled the rear brake on , nothing was there , all the hydraulic fluid hadleaked out. Front wheel spindle I had to replace this because the original one got 'jammed in'. I have done around 1100 miles (mainly off road), and I have replaced fron and rear pads once. The rear tyre is starting to lose its grip now. Please don't think this is a bad bike I actually think its ace!Plus I am sure that any other bike on the market is not perfect!

Climbs like a mountain goat. Same geometry that allows to climb so well shines on the downhill as well. Point and shoot. Fox RP2 shock with Pro-Pedal makes a noticeable difference for me uphill. Super plush downhill when full open. Components hold their own.
Weaknesses:
Stock components could be better, some of the stuff is near entry level. I would expect a little better on a bike at this pricepoint (MSRP that is). Pike is super plush and really did surprise me but would be nice to have something that matches the back end a bit better like as another reviewer mentioned (I upgraded to a Lyrik Coil U-Turn and it's a beautiful match).

Custom built bike I've been working on for the past 6 years that was stolen a few weeks ago.
Bike Setup:
Stock + ORI lock-on grips and a RockShox Lyrik U-Turn fork (though I rode the bike quite a bit with the Pike)
Bottom Line:
This bike is fantastic. It's the first complete bike I've bought since my parents gave me a Trek 4900 in 6th grade but it's made me realize that Specialized knows maybe just a liiittle bit more than I do about building a bike ;). It really fills the all mountain niche. It has more suspension than the bike I built up yet it climbs 5 times better. If you're looking for a true all mountain bike, buy this bike. It's obvious that it's design comes from the years that Specialized put into the Enduro and that's why you may pay a bit more for this bike than for a comparable bike from another brand but it's worth the extra. I'm loving this bike downhill so much I'm thinking of taking it up to the mountains to ride some medium sized freeride/downhill courses.

Simple design, Fox RP2 rear shock, big 8" front brake rotor, fairly light for an all mountain bike (size medium 31 lbs), very reliable.
Weaknesses:
Pike fork - I am 130 lbs / 5'8". For me, the spring in the fork is a little to stiff. Unfortunatly, according to a local dealer the stock spring is as light as they come. Another weakess is the wheels. I haven't taco'd one yet, but the spokes seem to keep coming loose. I have to tighten them about every 3 rides outs.
Similar Products Used:

Bottom Line:
I am reviewing a 2008 model. The simplistic geometry is great. As in other reviews, this bike climbs well. The Fox RP2 is plush when full open for blasting the downhills, and the pro pedal woks well. Many are fans of the Juicy 3 brakes, but I haven't had any issues yet. I would like the adjustability of juicy 5 or 7. The front 8" rotor gives me all brake I need. As mentioned above, I don't care for the Pike fork. I will replace it with a 150mm Fox Talas or something Fox air fork in the future.
Overall, This bike take anything you throw at it. As mentioned in many other reviews, it is a do all bike.

Similar Products Used:

Bottom Line:
I bought this bike to have something lighter for longer AM rides. This bike climbs better than any FS I've ever ridden. I pedals so well that I actually sold my hardtail that I used to ride the flat XC trails in Charlotte, cause this bike is so much fun on anything I put it on. When you get this thing up to speed, it really comes to life.
Alot of people complained about the Juicy 3's, but I have yet to need more brake with the 8" rotor in the front (I also only weigh 155).
The other complaint I've seen has been about the Eskar Control tires. Im running mine with tubes still, and have no complaints at all. The Eskar's have proven to be a good AM tire for me, and I plan to replace them with the same when they wear out.
Bottom line, if you want a bike that can do everything good, the Pitch will be a good bike for you. This is by far one of the most fun bikes I've ever owned.

Really great bike. The Pike will take whatever you throw at it and then some. Same thing with the Fox RP2. I have the rebound on both set at 1/4ths the regular coming down-hill and they work great! The Pitch can climb uphill like a less-slack XC bike when you crank down the pike. When you ride on roads or hardpack fire roads, you can flip on the lock-out and you'll ride really efficiently. You can also turn on lock-out if you can take the abuse uphill. The Pitch is one of those bike that you can take anywhere and do anything. It's the little brother to the Enduro. If you're buying a low-end enduro, don't bother. Jump on the Pitch Pro. Much better. Very reliable bike and very consistent in it's riding patterns. The Fox RP2 has Pro-Pedal which is like a semi-lockout, great for trail riding.
The Slack head-angle allows you to take it to jumps and ride down trails as fast as you can! The Pike only has 140mm on it but I wouldn't trade it for a 150/160mm without shock height adjustment! I love the thing.
If you think you can't do a trail; this bike will show you that you can do it!
Weaknesses:
I fell hard once, and the rear derailuer is acting up and giving me a hard time on the first gear (rear). Keeps slipping off. Easy fix though, just take it to the bike shop and fix it up. The Brakes are ok. Not the best, but still adequate for a lot of DH/FR trails. Throwing on some Avid Code's or Avid 7's would make this a perfect bike.
The Eskars have thin side-walls and may have trouble with sections containing rocky juts on the sides. Fine for the type of riding I do. Maybe switch the rear to Specialized 2.3 Chunder.
The Shimano 505 Clip-ins are kind of hard to get out of if you don't set them up correctly. You have to play around with the tension. Once you get it dialed in, you can clipin and clip out like a charm.
I haven't had any problems with the rims, but I've heard they taco easily and need to be replaced. No complains.
-Most of these things are being knit-picky about me. I'd rather say something than say this is a perfect bike.
Bike Setup:
Stock; WTB Shadow V Saddle
Bottom Line:
Great bike for anything you throw at it. It's basically a DH Bike that can go up and down-hill. Unless you're racing DH such as Fontana or Leaping Lizard (Laguna Beach), this bike is just as good as those other bikes. This bike won't disappoint if you're an XC rider, DJer, or any of those. This bike is the ultimate gap between XC, DJ, AM, and DH.
Replacement: Things that should be replaced in my opinion.
Cheap Gel Grips (Get ODI Lock-Ons!)
Saddle (If anything, replace this first. No channel in the stock model, very unconfortable, YOU WILL GET NUMB).
Avid 3 Brakes - Go for Codes or 7's.
Shimano 505's - Not very necessary change out, but some Crank Brother's would be nice!
[ONCE AGAIN I AM BEING KNIT PICKY IN ORDER TO GIVE THE OPTIMUM REVIEW. I DO NOT WANT TO LEAVE OUT ANY FLAWS]
-1 Overall Chili for my Dad making me his slave for eternity for funding half of the bike.

Unless you have some spare dough (who does in this economy?) stick with the enduro from a couple years ago and get one on ebay for much cheaper than the $2700 price tag. Been downhilling for the last couple of years but wanted to get a bike I could pedal again, whilst still being able to do some DH and singletrack at speed. This bike has not disappointed. I've waited 3 months to give this review as I wanted to see if anything went wrong.
This bike climbs like a yak and descends like a demon. The head angle is very slack 67o so almost like a DH/FR bike, meaning you can punish the downhill sections. That said I find this bike very precise on the flat and uphill as well.
The FSR suspension link is simply the best. virtually no pedal bob and fully active. Although even in mild braking the back end can buck when hitting bumps and rocks....but maybe i shouldn't be braking in the sections....
The Pike and Fox shock perform brilliantly. The Juicy threes on a 8" rotor (front) and 7" rotor(back) do the business and I've no complaints at all.
The running gear is good quality SRAM components except the SRAM X5 shifters. These are a bit clunky and can cause jumping gear changes at time. Probably need to give them a fine tunning.
Tubing and frame. Awesome rock solid Specialized quality. Pictures of this bike do not do it justice. The rear sub frame is actually really beefy. Go look at it in a shop if you have any doubts from the pics. I'm over 100 kgs and wanted a rear end that wasnt going to wandered and squirm. The rear triangle is stiff and planted. Combined with the FSR and this thing rails!!
Weaknesses:
Sadly for all Specialized's great design and attention to deal they do seem to fail in the same areas time and time again.
This bike has no lock on grips as standard. Come on Specialized all bikes have these now. Leave the crappy rubber grips for the kids bikes and commuters.
DT Swiss Rims. Very light, but crap. Both wheels need to be replaced as they taco'd. I had the same problems with my Spesh DH rig - it came with DT Swiss rims. I think Specialized do this to reduce the weight of the bike for the sales blurb, but the bottom line is they always need replacing because they suck. Gonna get Mavic 729 or 823 to beef up the wheel set. This bike can pummel DH sections and needs the rims to do it justice.
Pike fork blew a compression circuit seal in less than 2 months. Rock Shoxs are great when they work, but can be prone to annoyingly regular servicing and repairs. Had to get upset with Specialized to get some immediate action on this, so warranty issues in Aus can be frustrating.
Specialized Control tyres are great for grip and especially weight (only 700g) but have worn out very quickly managed to tear a side wall when scrapping past rocks. Gonna replace with Maxxis high rollers with 60a rubber for better life.
Everything stock except:
Lock on grips
ethirteen bash ring and guide
Flat - pedals
but will be replacing sh t DT Swiss rims
Bottom Line:
I love this bike.
It does everything I want it too. Its a reasonable weight and cost.
The suspension systems are brilliant and have saved me on numerous occasions... especially the Pike fork which has saved my on some really awkward landings and front wheel slides. It pedals really well and makes uphills virtually like a hardtail.
Rear triangle is stiff and planted and makes cornering and rock gardens a breeze.
Only downer is that you are likely to need to replace the rims. I'm taking one chilli off for this reason.
Definitely one of the best all mountain bikes of the year. Get one - you'll love it.

Nice Frame Geometry. Stock Setup is Good. Excellent Value. Good parts pick.
Weaknesses:
The grips are aweful and need to be replaced with lock-ons. Juicy 3's are good, but not great. Stock tires have little transition (ie: not good at slow speed cornering) on them and are slick in the wet. Good tire only for fast, smooth and dry terrain. Seat is very uncomfortable- only notice it about 30 mins into a ride.
Bike Setup:
Odi lock on grips, Kenda Nevegal sticky compound tires, RS domain fork
Bottom Line:
I like this bike. Amazing value, amazing ride. It climbs and descends well.
The grips need changing immediately and as I am 210 lbs I found the Pike to be abit flexy for free ride use (I ride primarily downhill but bought this bike as sometimes I like to xc and don't want 2 bikes). I switched the fork out for a RS Domain which I haven't tried yet. Having said this, the Pike is a good fork, and most riders will love it. My current bike setup weighs in at 32 lbs. With the new stickier tires the bike really handles well, however at downhill high speeds the bike's suspension is overwhelmed as expected.
The bottom line is that this bike has a super strong chassis, great geometry and is easily upgrade-able if you require it. I noticed another user switched the juicy's out for a more powerful brake- I would do this as well if I had the money (Probably switch it for another brake in the juicy line-up as I like their levers and liked the juicy 5's on my previous bike). For the money, this bike cannot be beaten.
My last point is a small niggle but worth mentioning. Specialized claims their FSR suspension works with virtually no braking interference... I can tell you that this is not totally true. I have noticed that when I brake, the rear wants to jack up abit which puts the rider more over the front end (bad for going downhill). The effect is minor but noticeable when using the back brake only.
Overall I would say that I would definately buy this bike again especially given the price and that I am really happy with it and how it performs. I would recommend this to any friend.

The Fox Float RP2 is a revolutionary shock. Great geometry, amazing stability on descents and in the air that gives you point and shoot confidence. My setup ensures I can keep up with my DH mates, but still tag along with my XC mates - a true all-rounder
Weaknesses:
This bike is not perfect. It took me a whike to get it setup for me, but now it rocks. Pike fork has no high speed damping, changed it for a Fox 36 Talas R which transformed the bike. Juicy 3 brakes are crap, swapped for Hope M4s. Front hub comes loose far too often, along with the loosening spokes at the rear, so swapped for Hope Hoops. The biggest ballache has been geting a decent chain device fitted. I would recommend a e13 DRS with a BB fitting backplate. I got a E-type backplate and is making the front derailleur bots shear off the fixing!

People who are into top-end bikes might scoff at the spec of gears etc. but for me they work brilliantly.
Some people criticise the juicy 3s - so far they are awesome and give much greater modulation than the hayes breaks I have tried on other bikes.

I sold my spec enduro SL, due to having to many problems with the front forx. I wanted a bike as versitile as the enduro with out the suspension problems, and to my rescue came the pitch. I am very pleased withe the bike, it looks great in Brown and is great value for money.
If there is anything i would upgrade it would have to be the brakes and shifters. apart from that the bike is great as is, it feels very stable desending and offers heaps of confidence and control in the air, As for climbing the bike tracks real well it will get you to the top, to be honest it does not climb as well as the Enduro but That is forgiven when flying down the same trail.
I am extreamly happy with the pitch, i have been changing bikes all year(this is my Fourth) and this one is a keeper. If you like Technical xc riding steep descents and all mountain riding up and down the hills, This is the Bike for you.

Strengths:
Price, weight, suspension, looks, wheels, price SINGLE CROWN FORK! This really is the most underated bike of the year. I was weirdly impressed that the bike comes with a quicklink (shows specialized actually listen) and the standard tyres are really very good. It climbs like a beast and descends like a large cheese.
Weaknesses:
Specialized have put some less than top bits on to keep to a price, especially the brakes. I changed the shifters (purely 'cause I don't like SRAM triggers), cassette (it weighed 500g), cranks (bo don't ride deore) and rear mech (despite the really nice X9 one on it)
The other strangeness is the sizing: I am 5'11" and rode the Medium; then quickly bought a small. The medium is way too long and has a limo length wheelbase.

I have owned more bikes than Elvis had sparkly uniforms.
Bike Setup:
Standard apart from: XT cassette, rear mech, shifters, chainset (brakes next) and flames on the forks
Bottom Line:
Buy a more expensive bike and you're just stroking your ego! This bike is the schnizz.

Strengths:
Price - Relatively affordable compared to other models Suspension - Nice and plush! Fox rear and RS Pike up front. What else could you want? Weight - Actually weighed about the same as my old bike.
Weaknesses:
None whatsoever

Bike Setup:
Mostly stock except for a DHX 5.0 coil shock, Hope Pro II Hubs laced to DT Swiss 4.2D's, Specialized Indie saddle, Wellgo MG-1 pedals and Juicy 7's
Bottom Line:
Yeah, they say its the "Poor Man's Enduro" but who cares! I love everything about my bike. This bike has given me the confidence to ride some trails that I only walked before. Riding my Pitch is like riding a couch down a single track! After test riding this bike, I sold my FSR XC after only riding it 9 months and got the Pitch.
