Versatile, it can be a light trail bike or a burly all mountain machine. Price.
Weaknesses:
Weight, only because I went with a lower end build kit.

Bike Setup:

Bottom Line:
AMAZING bike for my first full suspension ride. I really thought I was buying too much bike for Houston trails, but I have been very pleased with my performance. I find myself riding for 4 hours at a time and not tiring. Maybe I am having too much fun and I just dont notice any fatigue. I have some parts to upgrade, fork, crank, handlebars, seatpost. But I couldn't be happier with the performance I get and the price I paid. I have never noticed any pedal bob while climbing. The rest of the reviews really helped me make my mind up. Thanks fellow Heckler owners for the great advice!!!

Strengths:
Unbelievably light all mountain bike. Anodized frame

Weaknesses:
Size Large wheelbase and cockpit length a bit short

Similar Products Used:

Stock 2008 Heckler in anodized silver with RP23 and TALAS.
140 mm travel, all XTR. Added Rase seatpost and changed
DT Swiss 4.2 wheels to XTR.
Bottom Line:
Couldn't believe advertised weight of 26.5 lbs, so had to confirm with my own scale.
Added Rase seatpost (fantastic!) and Specialized Eskar
tires, so now it's 28 lbs.
Propedal lockouts work great; manual control is often better
than Specialized Brain(Stumpjumper).
Suspensions need to be set to lower pressure than spec'ed for
softer downhill ride.
Great bike for 'mostly X-country', all mountain riding!

This bike literally is made to do it all. Sure you might not want to hit the biggest downhill course on it, or climb 5000 feet in a day, but other than that, this is a true ALL mountain bike.
Coming from a hard tail, this bike is a huge change up to the norm for me. It soaks up parts of trails that I used to have to pick around and through. It climb like a champ (granted, not as well as a hard tail) but you barely notice the 6 inches of travel while climbing, let alone any travel at all. I have to be on a really really steep hill pedaling very hard to even notice pedal bobbing at all.
I have ridden a few mini-downhill courses on the bike. I haven't dropped anything over 2-3 feet high, as I am just getting used to the bike, but it soaks up small drops and jumps really well...to the point that sometimes if you didn't know better you might not even think you left the ground. The rear shock on this bike is the Fox Float R so it always has pro-pedal turned on. This means that the first few inches of travel are very stiff, but once you break through that threshold you can definitely feel the shock in action. I might eventually upgrade to an RP23 or DHX shock just so I have more options on turning the pro-pedal on and off, but for now the Float R is doing quite well.
I am 5'10" and went with a medium. About half the people I asked said I should go with a large and the other half said I should go with a medium. I measured and measured and finally decided to go with the medium. It does feel slightly cramped on the climb, but nothing so severe that I am not getting used to it. The smaller frame size does help in riding a little more FR on the way down.
Like other reviewers have said, I had to tighten the cables after a few days of riding in order to get the Front Derailleur to shift properly. Not a big deal. I have no complaints about this bike thus far. Granted, I am not the best biker in the world, but I am progressing fast and this bike has helped me immensely to be more aggressive. If I add any upgrades or find anything I don't like (not likely) I will be sure to update this review. For now, this is the best bike I could ever recommend.

Bottom Line:
Bike is ferocious. Uphill it can climb practically anything I put in front of it. Head tube angle isn't too slack or too steep. ProPedal elevates any single pivot bike and this is no different. Downhill I can honestly say I've never been passed up. I'm always yelling 'trail.' Bike loves to carve around the turns, descend and own big nasty rocks; drop-offs. Great trail bike. A bit heavy so it only gets 4 chilis on overall rating. BUY this bike.

I bought this bike to replace my Rocky Mountain Element 50 which was and still is an amazing XC bike. I wanted more travel AM setup and decided to go with the Heckler. I read the reviews online and decided to take a chance with the Heckler w/o even test riding it. I live in the middle of nowhere so it was a gamble.
The first ride I did was on a trail that had several 3' drops which I have NEVER cleaned on my Rocky Mountain. On my first Heckler ride, I clean each and every drop and felt that I could have done even larger drops. I was impressed to say the least.
While there may be better bikes on the market, the Heckler out of the box felt like the best bike I have ridden and I see no reason to nit pick the subtleties of single pivot vs. VPP. Whatever. Keep it simple stupid, is my motto.
My only grip is with the Avid Juicy Seven brakes which started to Turkey Gobble after a few months of riding. My LX Shimano's on my Rocky Mountain have been flawless.
Other than that, the Heck has been a dream and I can now keep up with riders half my age. Santa Cruz rocks!

At this point the only dowm fall I can see with this bike is the weight, maybe 5-7 lbs more then most of the guys I ride with, but I'm 190lbs, so will a 5lb lighter bike make that much differants? Strengths:
Simplicity of the single pivot system. I really don't understand it, but it seems that Heckler is also a good climber, which I found surprising for a single pivot system bike.
Weaknesses:
The factory tire (Nevegal 2.35) is not working with sticky mud, the tire just turned into a donut. However I would say that overall the bike itself does not have any weaknesses.
Default factory setup (D AM package), however changed the fork to Revelation 426 Dual Air, rearshock from Float R to RP23 and crankset from Deore to SLX. So far so good.....
Bottom Line:
This bike changed the way I ride, it gave me more confidence to go over trail that previously I was too worry to ride. I used to ride around the foothills of the volcanic mountain around Jakarta, Indonesia. I would say that a rearshock with Propedal capability is a must, it helped the suspension system to really eliminate bobbing (which a single pivot system is suspect to). I gave 4 chillis for value because I still think the price is still too expensive, however I gave 5 chillis to the overall rating without any doubt. This bike really rocks!!!

Simple and reliable single pivot design. Light enough for XC, strong enough for AM.
Weaknesses:
Swing arm seems to stiffen while braking, and climbing in the granny. This is typical for single high pivot design. Just means I do my braking BEFORE the turn or bumpy section which is what I should do regardless. Stock Nevegal DTC tires are lousy when the trail gets wet (which is most of the time in the rainy Pac NW.)
Similar Products Used:
Nothing quite like it.
Bike Setup:
XL frame, white powdercoat, X9 AM build kit. Replaced 110mm stem with 90mm to improve steering precision. Replaced 7in rear rotor with 6in because it was too easy to lock up the rear wheel.
Bottom Line:
Would have considered the new Blur LT if it had been available when I chose the Heckler. The old Blur LT didn't seem stout enough for my riding style. Buy this if you want the one do-it-all bike.

Is this an individual experience - maybe, but you should try it. Infinitely rideable and is an absolute blast to ride. Handles all the bumps and twists with aplomb and instills great rider confidence. I find myself riding much harder and aggressively than on any previous bike I've owned, and feel much more confident doing so. The suspension travel is very well controlled, with no rebound, and offers a terrific ride. I find myself far less fatigued on the long bumpy downhills, as I don't have to use my legs and arms to absorb the shock like on previous bikes. You can run right over a large rock, tree root or a parking curb on this thing and barely notice, and landing from a good drop yields no rebound and steady control. Very nimble and easy to dive into hairpin turns as well. I now look for trails I used to avoid and enjoy every minute of it.

The rear suspension not even once bottomed out (even though I am 210 lbs). Before I was not a jumper, with this bike I made my first 3 feet drops and it felt like a speedbump. Had an 04 Enduro and was basically looking for a replacement. Heckler climbs even better and descending is a little more lively and fun, probabaly not quite as quick as slightly less stable (higher BB?). Blown away by how good a single pivot can be. If your looking for one bike that is ideally suited to UK riding and can do a week in the Alps, then this should be very high on your list. RP23 is amazing on regular riding but you can blow your way thu the travel quite easily and pinch on bigger suff. Smaller air can would probably be a better idea to make it ramp up a little more, but not tried it. Built it as tough all moutain and got it to 30ibs (XL). Only problems have been 2 pinch bolt heads have snapped off on main pivot. Suspect this is a design issue so I would recommend replacing them with top quality, longer M6 bolts threaded full length. If the heads snap off you can then wind them out from the back with mole grips, otherwise its a nightmare getting the remnants out. Overall, really impressed, amazingly refined do it all single pivot design.

Climbing, Cornering, Suspension Travel, low maintenance single pivot suspension design, tough looking bike
Weaknesses:
Poor paint and decals are not on par with previous Specialized Stumpjumper FSR. I expected more from a top of the line bike manufacturer.
Similar Products Used:

Bottom Line:
I read every review on this site about the Heckler before I purchased it 3 months ago. This bike rocks and is the most capable I have ever ridden. I run the Fox Talas 36 R fork and its great for adjusting from 160mm travel down to 130/100mm for climbing. The Heckler handles five ft. drops and laughs. This bike climbs well and descends even better. I was worried about weight and pedal bob coming from my Stumpjumper FSR but It has not been an issue. The Heckler kills the Stumpy. I ride on very rocky terrain and this bike opens the trail in ways I thought were impossible. The Fox rp23 is a great choice for All- Mountain rididng with its propedal function and easy setup. It took a couple of rides to dial it in but once its set up you can forget about it. This bike makes me smile everytime I ride it and it's worth every penny. That is the bottom line.

Bottom Line:
I bought this frame new and cheap off ebay, it's the sweet liquid blue colour and 18" (i'm 6ft - perfect fit for me with a 90mm stem). Built the bike up in a lightweight (30lbs) allmountain style using a selection of parts from old bikes and new stuff too and, it works!
For a simple, single pivot frame it handles everything with ease and seems to push me into riding harder, longer and faster.
For almost two years now, this heckler has been riden on all sorts of terrain - from fast flat singletrack, trail centre action, to overnight mountain epics and i can honestly say it has not caused me a single problem: no creaks, no cracks, no loose bearings, not even any dents or serious scratches.
I normally swap my bikes after a couple of years, but i can't really think of a good enough excuse to part with this one, the bottom line is - it's a fun, good-looking, reliable, do-it-all frame. Then again, the new '08 heckler looks damn fine!

Built to last, Perfect balance of lightweight and bulletproof durability. Climbs and corners like a XC Racer and bombs the Downhill like it was built for it. Incredibly all around balanced bike!

Bottom Line:
This bike has been bullet proof! Every bike I have owned I have broken the frame & fork. I have raced this bike in a downhill event and XC event in the same day. Depending on the shock, fork and tires you use it can be set up to be a low 26.3 pounds for XC or heavier for trail riding & DH. It climbs & handles like my Fuel 100 did, but yet descends amazingly smooth and stable like a DH bike, the bike just corners like it is on rails at all speeds! It is incredibly forgiving & stable under any circumstances. This bike could be used by just a weekend warrior that likes to cruise on the local trails or the hard-core trail rider that will go for a few DH events during the season just to get the blood going! I did not think it was possible after 28 years of riding, but I believe this may be the best bike ever produced for high durability, low maintenance & with excellent performance & feel during all riding situations! My Heckler is over four years old and performs as good as the day I bought it!

Bottom Line:
Only had this bike for a few months, but am really pleased with its performance. I built it relitively strong, but even so it came in at sub 31lbs. Being just over 6ft 2" tall, I was on the border line of a large and XL frame. I chose the XL, and run it with a 90mm stem, which works great. I initially built the bike with Pike's, but changed to the Fox 36's which is what I had on my Patriot. The 160mm fork gives the bike a more all mountain feel, and relaxes the head angle by about 3/4 degree. I would class myself as an "all mountain" rider who likes to do a bit of everything, from long XC type rides to messing about on jumps, drops etc, and this bike is perfect. The single pivot and Fox RP23 works an absolute treat on the climbs. For the rider that wants a good all rounder, that looks great, definately try out the new SC Heckler.

Marz 55eta, Fox rp23, all 08 XT drivetrain and brakes, Easton Havoc wheels with 2.35 minions f/r, Easton monkey light bars, Thomson stem and seatpost. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2208/2432527643_73220cc43a_o.jpg
Bottom Line:
This bike loves to go fast downhill and take to the air. It climbs with less effort and accelerates faster than my last 02 Heckler- this may be somewhat due to lighter wheels and bike. Complete bike weighs 31.3 pounds which is quite good for a bomb proof 160mmF/150mmR suspension bike. The wheelbase is 1" longer and bb is about 3/4" inch higher than my 02 Heckler, which changes the handling a little. The longer wheelbase could be shortened and steering sharpened slightly with a 140mm fork (my Marz 55eta is 160mm), but I'm happy with it's current handling. Using the eta feature on the fork to shorten travel length is key for good climbing ability. If you're thinking about this bike and will be climbing a lot, get a fork that has an on-the-fly travel reduction feature.
For 07/08, Santa Cruz really improved upon the last version of Heckler with newer hydro-formed tubes (lighter and stiffer), and an improved main pivot with better bearings=longer life span and stiffer.
Regarding the previous posters that had problems. I think they are an extremely small minority. I put 5.5 solid seasons of extremely hard riding (xc, dirt jumping, and hard downhilling) on my last Heckler and the frame never complained once. On top of regular maintenance, I also overhualed my bike twice a year and only replaced the main pivot bearings 2 times in those 5.5 years. I don't know anyone who can make the same claim about ease and cost of maintenance for their frames!

The geometry is perfect for all day epics that include very technical sections and steep chutes. I was riding an 07 Kona Dawg that I loved, but the difference is huge as far as capability goes. I have mine built up pretty light (29 lbs for a large), but it still eats up descents like they're nothing. Colorado Cyclist did an exceptional job on the build and their customer service is top notch, they built it to my specs and had it shipped to me in less than a week. All this and it was the cheapest full XT, serious all mountain bike I could find!

Wow. More relaxed feel than a 07 Blur LT I rode in comparison, just a perfect fit. I'm 5' 10" and I went with a size large even though I was on a medium SL before. The Heckler looks and feels big in the parking lot but disappears underneath you when you're riding. I'm a mellow rider, you don't have to be a young gun to appreciate this bike. As far as paint goes, I put clear Veloskin (excelsports.com)on the cable wear points and have no issues. The Gangreen color is the bomb - looks like a friggin' army Hummer but gets unlimited MPG in peace. A gorgeous monster.

I'm going to try a fox float 36 r or maybe the 32. I think that will help in the steep stuff.

**This is a Follow up review to my '06 frame (last of the H5 series).**
Tough as nails. Afraid of nothing. It dares the rider to push the envelope. Who needs a 29er when you have an athletic bike like the Heckler.
*my first review was around 148-150th - check it out*
Weaknesses:
Keep an eye on the pivot bolts. Mine loosened up slightly after about a half summer of really hard trail riding. Caught it early enough with no ovalizing of the bearings.
I Weebled off balance once at a slow pace and layed the bike over softly (so I thought) and, to my surprise back at the car, there was a dent on the driveside seatstay. No structural weekness, mostly a cosmetic bummer as was reaffirmed by my LBS.

Bottom Line:
I never feel out of place in any terrain on this bike. I even started hucking a little here and there after I bought this bike. I am super confident in rock gardens and slick rooty areas. I like the technical climbs, because it is when I can show off and my buddies think it's my skill when it's really the bike....I'm serious, don't laugh. This damn bike scares the daylights out of me when I let go of the brakes. At the top of a descent my regular riding buds usually turn to me and say "You go first cause you'll be on our a$$ anyway!" I never felt the true sentrifugal bliss of a high speed turn until I rode this bike for about 6-8 months. This bike has raised my personal bar for riding.
This is the first year in the last 8 that I didn't spend the winter paging thru catologs and surfing the net for my next bike. I already own my next bike, and the next and the next. On the Heckler, I'm Home!

It's solid and no flex and I can see myself keeping this bike as there's just one pivot to replace. By far the best ride I have ever had. The Heckler is like riding your couch everywhere. TBH I cant find anything I dislike about this ride. Sure, some less educated people think that made in the USA is best. Unfortunately, it ain't. The welds, materials and construction are far better and cheaper in Taiwan. You only pay more for US made because of the disparity in labor costs. Anyway, back to the bike. There is aboslutely no bob on the climbs if you have the RP23. The bike is so responsive on climbs & descents that I fell in love with riding all over again. I have managed to get the whole build to around 30lbs which aint bad for a 5"+ all mountain ride. There is a reason that this frame has won so many awards and if you test ride one you will see.

I was warned by many bike shops against going single pivot. I have put 4300 miles on a Blur LT, and had to get used to the difference from a Blur Classic. No joke, the first time I rode the '08 Heckler, it was like I had ridden it for years. I changed over parts from the LT to the Heckler to fairly compare the two, but in my eyes, there is no comparison. The heckler can climb techy stuff better, the brake jack is a myth, maybe because I use a lot more front brake. Descending is at much, much higher speeds, and 5' flat drop offs to asphalt are very smooth. Can you tell, I love the simple, single pivot masterpiece that is the '08 Heckler.

Strengths:
Strength and simplicity - this design has been slowly refined since the dawn of time, becoming the perfect all-mountain or light freeride frame.
Weaknesses:
Big freaking pivots interfere with larger chainrings in the middle position
Similar Products Used:
Nomad, 5 spot, Slayer, Uzzi, etc.
Bike Setup:
DHX5.0 coil, Vanilla 32, Atlas 180mm cranks, 26t+34t+bash, DTSwiss340+LaserDisc Trails, Juicy7s, Azonic Pokeys (awesome!), various tires from 2.3 to 2.5's (mostly WTBs), etc.
Bottom Line:
I should have bought this frame years ago instead of messing around with multi-link designs. Utterly stout, squeak-free, and simple. Rides awesome.
If you've tuned a shock before, then it is child's play to get efficient pedaling out of the DHX 5.0, while still keeping it plush. My setup lets me stand and mash on the pedals with very little movement. Be sure to run the correct spring rate. If you're not sure, get another and try it out. The effort to get this right pays off tenfold. You need to dial in sag FIRST, then rebound, THEN mess around with everything else.
From all the talk, I was worried about brake jack. No worries. All bikes should be set up with bigger front and smaller rear rotors - ever wonder why every single seriously fast vehicle outside of mountain biking is set up that way? (Hint - you should be getting 75% of your braking force from the front, which is where the weight transfers... If you're braking late with the rear... then for god's sake please stop. You're the one causing all the braking bumps. Man up and carry some speed through the turns.)
Was definitely surprised to find this the sweetest riding full suspension frame I've ever tried, since was expecting to give something away with the single pivot. Nope. Took about 10 rides to sort out the suspension and the stem/spacer/bars combo. Now is 100% gangster on any all-mountain terrain. Eats up drops, rock gardens, roots, and gnarly technical descents. Also to my amazement eats up climbs, pedals like crazy, eats riders in lycra on their $5k bikes, etc...
In its first three months my Heckler has spent several weeks riding in Moab, Fruita, Downieville and the Bay Area. This bike can take it all. For lift-served or sustained Moab duty, the only change I'd want to make is a bigger fork w/ 20mm through axle. Otherwise could even take it in the park.
I sized it larger than SC recommended, and am very happy w/ a XL. I'm 6'2' and 165, running a 90mm stem. Very stable at speed and still plenty of room to move it around with body english in the technical or in the air, or to quickly bail off when things go all pear-shaped.
Only regret? Am running a 2 ring+bashguard setup, and am kinda limited to 34t in the mid-ring position without doing weird things to the bottom bracket alignment and chainline. Wish I could do 36t - would seem a pretty obvious need on this type of bike.
So I give this 5 chilis for both value AND overall. Some others have said they think it gives something up to the very highest-end frames. I call BS on that. I've ridden many of those frames, and I don't think the Heckler+DHX5.0 combo gives up anything. Maybe it just happens to be a perfect fit for my riding style - so be it. If you can find something better, ride it instead.
But remember, there's a reason Santa Cruz has kept this around since the dawn of time.

He said the rear had almost no movement. I tried some more hills with the fork locked out and it feels almost like a hardtail. It is as good or maybe a little better than my SL with a Pushed shock. On small drops(2ft) it feels like my SL,but it just soaks up the larger drops. My only real complaint is how crampd the cockpit feels, but I am used to the cross country feel of my SL.I also wish Santa Cruz offered Anodized frames with there complete kits. The paint on my Chameleon is not good, but the anodized on my SL is great. I bought the painted Heckler because it is cheaper. I hope it holds up.

This bike is exactly what I've been looking for. I previously owned a Bullit and Rocky Mtn Element...both great bikes but the one thing they lacked was the middle ground that I was looking for...that was a bike that could take some abuse yet be able to go on longer rides. After moving to a smaller space I decided to finally sell the 2 bikes and get what I've always been looking for...a bike that gives me the best of both worlds in one package. My old Bullit was a bike that felt like a tank going over everything in a simplistic design whereas the Element was light enough to go long distances yet not giving me enough travel that I longed for in a bike. In the Heckler I have found the best of both worlds. I can't rave enough about the simplistic design and low maintenance that comes with Santa Cruz single pivot designs. I've seen this bike set up for XC and I've seen it set up for more extreme riding at DH trails. I think I've found a good mix with mine tipping the scales at around 31lbs. Could I lighten it up - yes...could i beef it up - sure....but why would I when this bike doesn't limit me to any one type of riding. Go buy one...you won't be disappointed. I'll review down the road after riding it more and seeing more of the benefits than the ones I've just written about.

New 2007 Frame with Shimano XT/Fox "trail riding" build (31 pounds).
Bottom Line:
I've put a lot of miles on this frame in the last 4 months. They have been mostly mellow trail rides, but my 210 pounds adds a lot of stress. After much thought and research (and 6 years on a Bullit), I decided to buy the new 2007 Heckler. It feels a lot like the Bullit, but lighter and more snappy. With Kenda Small Block 8's and a Fox RP23, it accelerates quickly (even at 31 pounds). It handles extremely well going downhill (a lot like the Bullit). It climbs respectably with the propedal turned on or off (even though I think a frame's "climbing performance" should be based more on rider fitness...I climb faster on any bike when I am in better shape). The Heckler's climbing performance changes depending on the ride. On short to epic recreational rides, it "climbs" better. During the occasional race (2-4 times per year for me), it "climbs" slower than other race-specific frames. See what I mean? It all depends on your expectations. So far I've used it for trail riding, 24 hour races, long training days in the dirt and on the road, and even a 13+ hour day in the saddle. I needed a frame that fit my budget ($1,400); required very little maintenance (I'm not a good mechanic); would hold up for 5+ years; and provide above-average to excellent performance in a wide variety of conditions. That is exactly what the Heckler gives me every time. I agree with another reviewer who gave it 5 chilis for "value" (I think it's hard to beat a Heckler in this category) and 4 chilis "overall" (it's a "great" frame, but there are others out there that are better). Happy shopping!

Strengths:
I have the original Heckler, before it became the Superlight and then, apparently, the Heckler again. As far as I know, the only difference between my bike, which is 8 years old, and the new Heckler is that the swingarm on my bike is heavier (not by much).
I've ridden thousands of hours on it, traveled all over California, Utah, and Colorado with it, and adventure raced it on more than a few occasions. Simply put, this is a hall of fame design. There are better bikes, without a doubt, but few that can stand the test of time like the Heckler. It's still competitive against much newer bikes.
- lightweight without sacrificing durability - great clearance - compact cockpit makes for very efficient riding position - quick and maneuverable on tight trails yet confidence inspiring on fast washboard
Weaknesses:
- the one piece rear swingarm doesn't give you the feel that a multilink does
Similar Products Used:

old school... Marzocchi Bomber, XTR controls, Avid mechanical discs, Race Face cranks, Hayes Superlight hubs on whatever rims I can get a good deal on (I think I have Sun and Mavic right now), Thomson seatpost, King headset, and a Easton handlebar... but seriously, I haven't replaced anything on this bike in years other than a saddle that wore out. It's like the energizer bunny, just keeps going and going.
Bottom Line:
Everyone loves their new bike but how many people can say after 8 years on a single bike that it's still a five chili?
The Heckler lives up to the task and then some, and the durability means you won't get stranded somewhere when you really need it. I rode 40 miles a day over a week in Moab and while my friends needed trailside repairs, or outright new bikes, my Heckler never flinched.
You will notice that I gave the bike a 5 chili value rating, for the reasons stated above, but only 4 on overall. The reason for that is it's clear that there are some really amazing bikes that are capable of a higher level of performance and I think that on overall ratings you have to take into account relative performance, so when compared to other bikes the Heckler is still competitive but not superior to the top shelf bikes on the market today.

Bottom Line:
This is an update to a previous review that I posted.(actually several reviews) At the time of my last review I had just bolted a bunch of new components on my 2003 Heckler, thinking that I had arrived at the perfect bike. Well I was a bit off. The Saint Double Cranks and Shimano M647 Pedals, along with my original Progressive Coil Shock, pushed the weight of the bike over the 33 pound mark. When the winter snows melted and I actually started riding the bike, I immediately realized that this setup was better suited to a young gravity freak than to my 57 year old trail riding style.
The bike would roll over anything but getting it there was not a fun chore. I started to seriously consider getting a new bike, but my old Heckler was too good a friend to part with. So off came the Saints and 647's and on went an XTR Cranset and pedals. I also went to tubless Continental Vertical tires. The final part of my plan was switching to an air shock. I decided on a 2008 Fox DHX 5.0. I ran into a little glitch when I went to mount the shock. It simply would not clear the frame at the front mount. I called Santa Cruz and the tech rep said they had started putting a dimple in the later frames to clear the DHX, but the 2003 frames presented a problem. I knew better than to put my own dimple in the frame, but I was also determined to get the shock mounted. Let's just say that I succeded.(OK, maybe my Fox Warranty is now void) When I weighed the bike it registered just over 28 pounds.
An epic ride yesterday just north of Toronto Ontario has inspired this new review. As it is now configured, my Heckler has taken on a whole new life. It still rolls over just about anything, but the lost weight has turned it into a nimble trail bike that can be ridden all day without me having to take a day off from work to recover. I tried a lot of settings on the shock before I got it dialed in and finally hit on the right combo. The Fox fork and shock now work like they were made for each other. The bike pedals like a dream and soaks up any hits the trail throws at it. At the end of the ride I renewed my vows with the old Heckler. She is an absolute joy to ride.
I felt stupid for thinking that I needed a new bike. She has a few scars here and there, but scars are not flaws. This simple, single pivot design can roll with any of the techno heavy, multi pivot trail bike wonders out there and it does so without the headache of constant maintenance. She has rewarded me with many hours of fun riding and gracefully put up with my experimentation on components. I have seen the light and I am now in touch with my inner Heckler.

the interwebby!
Strengths:
Durability and reliability, the single pivot bearings last ages and are cheap and easy to replace when the inevitable strikes. Versatility, it can be used for virtually any type of riding - and it's pretty good at most of them too. Pedals efficiently, weight is very reasonable considering the beating it can withstand. Anodized finish is very durable. The frame is still in one piece despite much abuse.
Weaknesses:
Displays some of the tenancies that are inherent in single pivot designs: some stiffening of suspension while braking, some pedal feedback on square edged bumps when climbing. It really isn't that bad though, much better than some other single pivot bikes ie crackenfail... Also, lateral flex is noticeable when landing big jumps or really thrashing the downhills - though this is to be expected given the relatively light weight of the frame
Similar Products Used:
Many, many different bikes.
Bike Setup:
I've had this frame 2.5 years. It's on its 4th set of forks and drivetrain, and 3rd rear shock and set of wheels. Current build is a Pike, XT/sram drivetrain, DT wheels and juicy brakes.
Bottom Line:
I've given this bike a good workout over the years, it's been built up with heavy wheels and dual crown forks and raced downhill - and has also been built up light and seen many epic backcounty rides and the odd 24hr race. In short, build it how you want and thrash it as hard as you can, it delivers the goods. Yes you do notice a bit of pedal feedback, some lateral flex when ridden really hard and some loss of sensitivity under brakes (typical of single pivots) but it's more than made up for it by the bikes predictable stable handling. It's also tough. I've landed awkward drops hard enough to shear off the replaceable dropout (lucky it's replaceable eh?), blow shocks and demolish wheels, and the frame itself is still going strong. It's not the one perfect bike - I doubt that exists, but this mix of reliability, well mannered handling and true all mountain versatility at a very reasonable weight has yet to be matched by any other frame. Considering you'll get years of faithful service it's also excellent value.

Bottom Line:
One of the first of the newly designed 2007 Hecklers sold in the Seattle area, the bike immediately felt like I had been riding it for years. My first ride after the bike was built up was "A River Runs Through It," one of the Whistler Valley's black diamond cross country trails. This bike handled everything that trail has to offer, taking ladders, rocky, rooted, technical uphill climbs and descents, and jumps like it was built specifically with that trail in mind. After riding that trail repeatedly backward and forward, I took it into the bike park and rode the downhill blue trails and black diamond trails for four days. It handled beautifully. The only thing that had me a little concerned was riding the bike hard with the Fox RP23 rear shock and Fox 140mm forks where most people were riding downhill or free ride set ups with 8 inches of front and rear travel and dual crown forks. I was amazed at how tough the Fox components turned out to be. My 5.9 inches of rear travel and 5.5 inches in the front are awesome, but a Fox DHX5 spring loaded rear shock and Fox Vanilla RLC 160mm forks would handle technical downhill trails like those in Whistler's bike park a lot more effectively. I still had a great time up there pushing the bike (and my riding skills) to the limit! I have since taken the bike to Seattle's Tapeworm, a twisty, technical trail laden with tight switchbacks, and it performs really well on that type of trail with the RP23 shock and 140mm forks.

After a few hours or 20-30k it starts to feel really heavy. No problems with durability. Original pivots. Only replaced the chain, cassette and chain rings. Rebuilt the hubs too. Good to do every once in ahile around here. Lots of mud and clay. Will last a very long time. The only thing I would change is maybe a new rear shock. Sick!!!

Bottom Line:
As said in most of the other reviews: excellent all-rounder.
The DHX Coil is a really a great shock for this frame. Not the lightest but it doesn't bob and I have never felt it bottom out. It probably does, I just never feel it.
It's really at it's best when you just push it forward and don't hesitate. The rear-end has a habit of stiffening up when hitting the brake. Good thing is that you don't really need the brakes once you know where you want to be headin'..
I do get surprised everytime I hit a nasty climb, when this thing can take me to the top painless. Then I will awe myself at the speed it will handle on the rockiest descents.
This is the Corvette of bikes: classic, not too sophisticated, not high-tech, but still the fastest thing on the block. Don't forget great value!
Easy 5 chilis for value, but I'll save my 5 overall chilis for a design that can avoid the single pivot downsides but retain the upsides. It would really deserve 4.5 though..

Bottom Line:
This bike is fantastic if you want to do a bit of everything. Sure there are no doubt better DH bikes (big rigs), and better XC bikes (weight weenies): if you are totally into a particular mtb 'discipline' then go buy the appropriate rig. BUT to ride your local trail, ride some structures, make some hits/drops, a few epic rides, and a bit of DH or 4X or jumps then this is your puppy. If you're thinking about it, BUY ONE

Bottom Line:
A good quality shock with a platform is essential to get the best out of the suspension. The bike swallows everything I'm brave enough to try (including local downhill courses, Cwmcarn downhill, anything any part of the 7 stanes dishes out) with aplomb. Pikes are a great match. I often look at multi link hype bikes and think that maybe I could ride better if I had one but then remember that so far anything I've failed to ride has been most definitely due to pilot error. 1 pivot keeps things simple and the bearings have lasted 2 British winters of frequent riding which is better than most of my friends bikes with lots of pivots.

I must say I made a wise decision. This bike does it all. 10' drops, 20' gaps no sweat. I will only ride my big bikes at the lifts or extremely rough trails. The lighter weight took a while to get used to because it does move around alot more in the rough. But it is so manageable and responsive it makes the rough more fun. everything, best bang for the buck, flexibility in that you can build it as a fairly light super tough trailbike, or take the same frame and build it up to a burly freeride bike. It's fun to change out components and explore the bikes potential
Weaknesses:
The only weekness to me was the sizing jump from the large frame to the extra large frame. With the brand new frames it's not so bad anymore. But for a while it went from a 23.3 top tube all the way up to a 25??? That's a huge jump in sizing. I think it's now at a 23.5 and then a 24.5 which is better. Although I still wish they came in a 24! :)
Bike Setup:
at the moment it's all saint with XT shifters, 8 inch rotors front and back thompson, easton, a boxxer on the front with 2.5 and 2.7 inch tires. I know silly overbuilt, but it's been fun! I am about to go back to a pike on the front and 2.35 high rollers since it needs to pull some trail bike duty again.
Bottom Line:
As I said it's one of the best bang for the buck frame deals out there. The previous poster stating the rear end had FLEX is either full of it, or he had something wrong with the frame/bushings or shock he was using. That goes the same for the falling rate linkage, again the ride depends greatly on the shock your using and the set-up. And then there is the consideration that some people just don't like the way a single pivot feels. Alot of it is just in their heads, but...? :)
This is the 151st review of this bike, the next highest number of reviews is the Intense 5.5 another amazing bike, but consider the frame costs twice as much...
I have no doubt there are better bikes out there, but you just can't beat this bike for the money. It does everything well, it's tough as heck, and the only reason I would even think of getting rid of mine is to get a new one...

Before I begin I should say I am a big SC fan, my big bike is a VP-Free which I love. I really wanted to like this bike but should have spent more time doing some real trail testing first. The lack of lateral stiffness is alarming. Side hopping the bike causes massive flexing. It is also very noticeable when loading the rear end in a corner or pedal kicking up and over obstacles. The falling rate suspension also doesn't take too kindly to pre-loading for bunny-hops. On a positive note, when just flat out bombing down a rough patch of trail where you're not having to work the bike side to side the thing rips and the suspension feels bottomless. My buddy loves it though and is buying it from me as soon as the new Turner Spot arrives.......

this is my second review; the heckler rules; it just goes and goes. beautiful frame. light, cheap too. new version's out, don't care. this frame still looks better. the rp23 needs to be banned on this frame. its not fair; makes it float over anything, and greatly reduces bobbing. feels like a hardtail when set to 3, imagine that. and fast. couple that with a handling engineered by santa cruz, its one of a kind. begs to be ridden. yup, it mine is built light. overkill frame? yup. don't care. will i sell it? nope. that's what the heckler is. overkill. its for keeps. it is a non specific frame, you build it up. ya want it fast, its fast. ya want it tough, its tough. best part is, few frames out there have this magical quality. to have one is to believe. try it. but not mine. get one yourself, and then you'll see why. there's no turning back.

Bottom Line:
Pinch Me! Ouch, I must not be dreaming. This is the BMW of bicycles. I'm telling all of you right now, if you are considering a Heckler, good for you....go get one! You will love it to death.
Before I continue I have to give some background. I had a difficult decision in the shop at the time of purchase. Do I go with a spanking new '07 and get the upgrade to the RP23 for the extra $90; OR do I get the '06 for $110 less and it has the DHX Air 5.0. If you have been paying attention you already know what I did, so this is a review on the '06 frame.
I used to be the guy struggling to keep pace going uphill, and have to pause for a breather before heading down. In my first 2 rides I have not only cruised uphill easily, but I lead, and then charge downhill screaming - both figuratively and literally. Speed with no side effects (like getting bounced offline) is addicting on this bike. Plush is a severe understatement on the DHX and the ProPedal is the best thing since twist off beer caps (Heckler has an opener just in case). The frame is super responsive when you hit the gas and work it through the boulder fields. I could go on and on and I've only ridden it twice. All I think about now is how soon I can get back on my Liquid Blue Heckler and flow.

the heckler D AM kit has been a dream to me. I was able to get a great santa cruz frame with some great componentry within my price range, which you can't really say about the blur lx. my only wish is that i could have gotten a fox fork, but the tora has been great to me so far so i can't even really complain about that.
i had one panic moment when i bought the bike because every time i climbed something single track and moderately steep, i would end up wheelieing out and have to walk. i dropped the stem all the way to to headset and cut the fork down and since then i have the perfect balance of being able to pick up my front end enough to place the bike where i want it to go, but also haven't had any problems keeping my weight over the bike while going uphill.
downhill its been a dream, i can keep up with my friend and his freeride bike down some dicey technical downhills and have been able to hit most everything that comes my way in the way of jumps / ledges. my heckler has taken everything i've put it through and i'm looking forward to a healthy relationship with this bike for years to come.

frame only, built to my liking
Strengths:
SOLID, forgiving, encouraging, straight forward, easy to maintain, hard to damage, capable in an assortment of riding styles and conditions- most rounded bike I have ever owned.
Weaknesses:
none. really, it is a great catch-all ride. Not a light bike, but cracked frames and bending tubes are no longer a concern when riding anymore.
Similar Products Used:
a bunch
Bike Setup:
Minute :03 IT forks, Cloud Nine rear shock, XT Cranks/BB, Avid 203 mech disc, IRC Mibro 2.25UST front, Conti Gravity 2.3 rear (the conti is actually bigger, and both run tubeless via Stan's), SRAM X9 Med Cage rear, XT front...uh, thats about it
Bottom Line:
At 250+lbs I need a solid ride. Two years into my quest I returned where I first looked, w/ the Heckler. I wish I had my money back from all the mis-adventures, because this is where it is at. Every other frame broke under me.
The Heckler is a great handling bike, the only complaint is w/ MY set-up not with SC. I need a 20mm Thru-axle to finish off the best bike ever, as it would not be as twitchy in rough terrain. I love the Minute, but I will upgrade it to a 145-150mm fork w/ that axle option as soon as I find one that I really like.
For those of you wondering about the Cloud Nine shock- it is really nice and fits well with the Heckler. It only comes in a 2" stroke which is a shame because you lose an effective 1" of travel, but I don't really miss it. It is light and tough as nails- holding 240psi steady for a year now. I have come close to bottoming it out but never have (I don't think), and that was off of 4' to flat asphalt drops. The 5th Element is not a fair comparison to this shock, and because of user serviceability neither is Fox. Never tried a Manatou.
It took me all of 30 seconds to realize the trick to riding this bike- stay off the brakes and gently point down your line- the bike is capable of correcting your errors and keeping you upright through just about anything. All of the crashes I have endured happened when I second guessed what IT could handle. Not the same could be said about the other bikes I have ridden, which would buck you off on big hits, lacked proper geo to get you into a good position, or had either too great a head angle or too little for control to be maintained through varying conditions.
This bike is a star for a reason, and it is well deserved. If you are a big guy like me buy this bike with confidence.

I bought this frame in January of 03', and have yet to experience any notable issues. I have ridden badly in several states (of the union… not mind), on a variety of reasonably famous trails. The frame is in the same, mechanically sound condition that it was in when I bought it! Single pivot suspension is the way to go… unless you savor the intrigue of a multi-pivot ticking bomb, or live with a mechanic. If you simply can’t live with the performance (i.e. possible pedal bob) of the newer, stable platform suspension designs, then you should probably be riding a hard tail. I still use the OEM Fox Float AVA (with no Pro-Pedal features) with absolutely no complaints.
I would highly recommend the Heckler Pro-Pack as part of a yearly maintenance regime. I let mine go a little too long (okay… three years) and the pivot bearings were in pretty sad shape. $20 (on the Santa Cruz website) gets you all the necessary parts (and bearings) needed to overhaul the entire suspension. It’s worth every penny!
Speaking of maintenance, the technical support staff at Santa Cruz is phenomenal. I have needed their assistance on three or four separate occasions to double check some tuning and maintenance issues (my mechanical ignorance, not their designs). In each circumstance my e-mails and phone calls were returned in a very timely manner, with well-articulated instructions. Nice job guys!

Strengths:
Frame Stiffness, Simplicity of Design, Bang for the Buck
XTR Drivetrain, Saint Double Cranks, Fox Vanilla RLC Fork, Progressive 5th Element, Hayes 7" discs, Sun SUV wheels, Kenda Nevegal 2.35 tires, Monkey Lite Carbon DH Bars
Bottom Line:
I've reviewed this bike before but feel that it deserves another. This is a 4 year old frame, so it was made in the USA before the shift to Taiwan when the popularity of the bike went through the roof.(following a review in MBE that elevated the frame to cult status) I'm suffering through a Toronto winter so the old Cruz is leaned up against the wall downstairs. I have freshened her up with new stem, bars, cranks, pedals, seatpost, and tires and cannot wait for Spring! I made the switch to a Saint Double Ring crankset. I knocked the teeth silly on my XTR Triple on a rock in Utah and Jenson had the Saints on sale for $149 before Christmas. Could'nt pass that up. With 2 rings and a bash guard the bike just looks better even though she gained a few ounces. I'll review the cranks after next summer. That cures the low bottom bracket issue for me.There really is no need for 3 rings on a bike like this anyway. Forget the weight and just ride. This bike will roll over anything as long as you keep the speed up. The suspension feels bottomless and the fork lockout takes care of your uphill business. I have not experienced the powder coat issues that a few others have mentioned. A couple of well placed lizard skin patches will prevent all the hose and cable rub spots. I chose white because it is way more forgiving when it comes to showing scratches. Last month's Mountain Bike Action reviewed the new Superlite from Santa Cruz. Take a close look. It's an exact clone of the Heckler, just built lighter. This ought to be proof enough for anybody that one pivot works. So now you have 2 choices, lite or chunky. The Heckler was discontinued by Santa Cruz but resurrected due to popular demand. Grab one now before the "next big thing" pushes these bullet proof frames into the museum of great mountain bikes. You won't be dissapointed. A bowl full of red chilis for my old friend.

Strengths:
same as stated in my first review
Weaknesses:
Occasionaly (high logs and rocks) the bottom bracket is too low, but you get used to time your pedal strokes
Bike Setup:
Same as stated in my first review...except for: -Lizard skin grips changed with Raceface GoodNEvil (much better), cause the lizards were killing my hands -Maxxis HR DH 2ply 2*35 changed with Minion 1ply 2*35 (better for my style of riding)
Bottom Line:
The frame is holding up very good, except for some shock bolt noise which was remedied with overtorquing them (done by FOX rep.) and a funny feeling of rear flex, which also went away by itself after 100km. I bought a spare PROPACK just in case, but have yet too use it (seems fine for the moment). I have still to hone my riding skills before I can reach the max. potential of this bike, but getting closer every day :-) I have become a better rider since I bought the bike. Anybody who would like to use the bike as a true hardcore AM rig, with the occasional drop in between, should get it equipped with a DHX5 coil, since it complements the bike very well. A match made in heaven. All out adjustable, and once set up properly...PLUSH... Had too fiddle around with diff. coils (400/450/500) a little (came with #400 which turned out too be too weak) but the time spend fine tuning the shock is necessary if you want the most out of the bike!!!! If you fit the most heavy spring on it (at the right sag) with minimal preload, you get small bump compliance and a nice mid stroke fell despite the falling rate design. The Bottom out feature takes care of the final part of the stroke. I had good luck with the #450, which gets me the recommended sag with just 1/2 turn of preload above the minimal 1 turn. Had some conversations with other riders on Hecks and came too the conclusion that riders are often riding they're bikes with too stiff springs because of the lowish bottom bracket. But in doing so you loose a lot of the bikes magic feel (too little sag makes the bike ride higher but makes the first 1/4 of the stroke feel dead and uninspiring)
Current setup: Fully equipped rider = 103kg (app.225lbs) Shock spring - #450 Preload - 1 1/2turn in (from engaged) Piggy back - 130Psi Bottom Out - 2 turns from from lowest setting PP setting - UP/DOWN - 12 clicks from full off /7 from full off Since I ride self assisted AM/FR epics (2000m vertical / 60km loops) the PPD helps a lot on those parts of the climbs where "The going gets tough, and all other throw they're breakfast over the handle bar" ;) The TALAS 36 also helps make climbs less scary. All in all the bike is a cherry and worth every dime. Dont

Strengths:
Versatility and Handling. Beats the competition by a long way.
Weaknesses:
Water gets inside the frame during the Scottish winter. Protecting the frame from cable scratching could be better.
Similar Products Used:
I also tested the Specialized Enduro, Cannondale Prophet, Nomad.
Bike Setup:
Santa Cruz's XO All Mountain kit with Rock Shock Pikes and I changed the shifters (and thereore derailleur)for Shimano XTR. DXH Air Shock.
Bottom Line:
A real confidence booster and trail eater. I used to be a strictly XC singletrack rider on a lightweight and twitchy hardtail. After six months I am starting to nail six foot hucks, tabletops, rock gardens and a lot more speed. I am still way of pushing this bike near its limits. The Heckler has made mtb’ing so much more fun and opened my mind to whatever terrain I can find.
I noticed the extra weight uphill for the first couple of rides and was then used to it.
The DXH Air took me a while to fine tune, but it is worth it. Now with just a quick twist of the dial I can change the suspension so I feel I am one a different bike, while out on the trail.
The SRAM XO (and my additional XTR) gear and chain components have stood up to six months of mud, rain, dust and grime before I have had to make my first adjustment.
I have also had great service from my local bike shop, thanks all to Alpine Bikes.

my bike is set up for trail riding.. Manitou Nixon plat..in the front. Fox DHX 5.0 coil on the rear..
Bottom Line:
I have used plenty of newer design suspensions and always seems to run into squeeking pivot problems.. (multi pivots design).. then this bike came along.. not an xc race frame but can be built for just about any set up you need.. I should've gotten one of these a while back.. Bike performs suprisinglly well uphill. and of course the descends are awsome, I've been clearing technical sections like I was on rails, eats up bumps and rocks... I feel like I'm cheating when I ride this thing.. Anyways, I dont mind the little weight going up(not that big of deal) as long as it tops it with a huge smile descending..

much easier to climb with a pop-lok/lockout and travel reduction feature, did not see any reason to pay more for the flood gate option on their other forks it is so easy with the pop-lok remote one can change from full travel to lockout in a fraction of a second this fork really makes the bike so much more enjoyable to ride.

I have ridden this bike hard for 8 years and it keeps on going. I will probably never rid of this bike, although I have been eyeing the new Nomad. My only gripe is that it doesn't have a replaceable rear dropout, but this bike is a 1998 model and the whole rear is solid, it looks different than the new ones. I want to upgrade the rear shock, and also re-polish the whole rear soon. It is quality craftsmanship.

Bottom Line:
I've had this bike nearly 3 years now and it is the best. There some great bikes out there and I am intermittantly tempted but one great ride on the Heckler and I know there is no way I want any other bike (unless it was an extra bike of course....). Pivot bearings last 10-13 months and it does go through rear standard fox shock bushes (get some heavy duty ones from TFTuning) but that's it. Mine has the DHX Air shock, not everyone's fave but for aggressive XC it is perfect and the whole setup loves a good technical, rocky\rooty decent.
Climbing is OK, you will always get to the top and you won't get there last either.
Get one if you ride off road a lot and like to have some proper fun. I have riden it in Chamonix, Scotland and Wales and is always equal to the task, more so than me!

Bottom Line:
The decals on my ano frame are falling off. But thats where my criticism of this bike starts and ends. SCB, to their credit, sent me a new decal set free.
This bike does it all. Even at around 31 lbs., it can climb at a decent pace, even compared to my current HT. Lots of traction. A great handling singletrack machine, handles twists and turns as long as you trust the bike. On sketchy technical stuff, just trust the bike, let go of the brakes and hang on. Downhills are a blast. Felt more solid in the handling and bump absorption department than the giants ive tried. The bike can even dirtjump. The motolite was quite nice too, but the numerous pivots had me wondering about when time came to service them. Oh yeah, I love the way it looks. Cant imagine any other bike beating it at this price.
