Strengths:
The bike climbs so, so good. The slow speed platform is really rigid when climbing, almost zero movement. Coming from a RP23, the difference is night and day between the "pro pedal" setting to the curnutt which is far superior. When you do start pointing it downhill, the suspension starts soaking up everything. 6.5" goes a long way to increasing your confidence. Who would've thought that a bike that can climb so well can descend even better.
Weaknesses:
My build is probably 3lbs heavier than light cross country/AM setups. I have Azonic Outlaws and middle of the road components, so nothing really feathery.
Similar Products Used:
Specialized Stumpjumper FSR, Santa Cruz Blur
Bike Setup:
I have an 09 FXR with a steel 300lb curnutt shock, 6'3 and 215 puts me in the range for a 350lb spring but setting the sag at 1" only required 3 turns on the 300lb spring. Fox 32 vanilla, SRAM x7/9. Azonic Outlaws and most importantly a gravity dropper 4" seatpost.
Bottom Line:
If your looking at this bike you know that this bike has killer suspension, but what truly impressed me was the climbing. If you're a weight weenie, get the XCT5!

Bottom Line:
What an awesome ride. I loved every minute of my 5 years on the Heckler and was worried I'd be dissapointed with any other bike. Nope, uh-huh! The Foes is WICKED! It has a similar upright, neutral feel as the Heckler but with longer legs. The Foes' extra inch travel (from 5" to 6") on what is essentially a beefy single pivot XC bike is VERY noticable. Even with 6" travel front and rear the Foes climbs like a demon. It's heavier than the Heckler but climbs better. On-the-fly fork travel adjustment (such as Zocchi's excellent ETA system) helps keep the front end straight and steady on climbs.
It bombs down hills like it's on rails, so solid on the trail, amazing point-n-shoot confidence. The huge, over-engineered frame gussets, main pivot, and swingarm re-inforcement make the frame incredibly latterally stiff. Imho, Brent Foes simple yet elegant engineering solutions totally puts Santa Cruz, Ellsworth, Intense, and the like to shame! I suppose the Curnutt could offer a bit more small bump compliance, but it works very well when you really need it; climbing and the rough stuff. The Curnutt feels race bred, and absorbs big hits better than the Fox DHX or 5th Element ever did. When climbing it offers the perfect stable platform without pedal bob or tedious adjustment. The proprietary 'Curnutt clunk' takes a lil bit of getting used to, but is mostly harmless if slightly annoying at first.
This is a bike for (cashed-up) long time MTB connesseurs, who've put in the hard yards on aluminium hardtails over the years, who endevour to embrace the simple pleasures of life (without compromise), and believe you have to earn your downhill with a gutsy climb. Thanks Brent!

No lies, the Air Curnutt is a dream! Pound the cranks and she feels like a hard tail. The weight is no issue because of how efficient this bike is. I climb everything with this bike that I did on my light weight cross country bike. It does help having adjustable travel on your fork for those extended or severe climbs.
Weaknesses:
Not too many, she is dream. I could say that on the downhill It took some time to get used to the wheels not wanting to stay connected under breaking. Make some adjustments and all is good.

A solid handbuilt straight frame that is really a work of art. No crappy imported frame parts, bearings or rear shock.

Bottom Line:
As soon as you climb you will see who really has found the "Holy Grail" of stable platform. This is the heaviest bike in my stable but still feels easy to climb because of the Curnutt. When you descend you will feel like that familiar trail seems easier and want to go faster than you can imagine. The bike goes where you point it and does not falter. If your mission is to get down that technical trail as fast and easy as possible then get this bike.

So far I am delighted with the frame and bike, very fast, both up hill and down, good platform shock. The bike looks fantastic and rides very easily. I have no problem getting the front up for jumps etc.

Bottom Line:
Bike was just delivered on friday and put 22 miles on it sat. I brought someone along with me and let them borrow my now Retired Bullit. About halfway through the ride I realized I was clearing everything and having an awesome ride. I could claw up any hill from a standstill and hit any drop like it didn't exist. I just figured I had that New Bike Smell feel going on. I decided to swap with my buddy on my Bullit on one of the trails. What a flaming piece of crap that Bullit was compared to my Foes. I would have traded the Bullit for a burrito at that moment. I demanded my Foes back and thats when I realized what three years in suspension advancement does to a mountain bike. The rear shock is so smooth and keeps the back wheel glued to the ground. The combination of the super stiff rear triangle and the Curnut shock make for the most incredible ride. I swear my Dragon has more back end waggle than the Foes. I always keep a hardtail around for when I go up in the mountains in N.C. for them really long 15 mile climbs but not anymore. I am going with one bike and really enjoy the way down. I will check back in three months and see if this Nirvana is still with me.

The shock is AWESOME. Every bump that this frame rolls over is instantly sucked up like a vacuum cleaner. Great on the downhills and very little bob.
Weaknesses:
Not exactly a trail bike like they advertise it to be. More like a freeride bike that you can actually pedal around the trails with. Front wheel lifts up while climbing a lot even with 130mm front fork setup.
Marzocchi AM SL1, DT swiss EX5.1D, XT cranks, XT deraillures, Hayes HFX Mag, Nevegal 2.35", Diabolus 70mm stem, raceface headset, Titus handlebar, shimano clipless pedals.
Bottom Line:
This bike can ride XC, but I wouldn't say its intended for it. Going downhill its awesome. It flies fast and is lightweight around the turns. It pedals great with hardly any bob. I'd get it if you are mostly into going downhill, but still want a bike that you can pedal around the local xc trails with. Its not heavy, its just got too much travel in my opinion for XC riding. I got my bike under 30 lbs. but I still have a hard time going up on the bike. The main feature I've found to be extraordinary with this bike is the shock. It is so nice. Its better at absorbing the bumps than any other bike I've been on. I just hope I'm not spoiled with it now.

Bottom Line:
I really thought I wanted to give this bike less than five chilis. Why?? Not because it deserves it, but I had a hard time believing there would not be something to improve on - well maybe weight, but that is almost unavoidable with a 3" stroke Curnett shock (it weighs nearly 2 lbs with ti spring) Any way, after the first ride I might have given it 4 chilis, but now that it is broken in more there is no question it deserves 5. It is well designed (I studied mechanical engineering), it climbs well for any bike, not just a 6in travel bike (the fork is more of a problem here), it feels plush even over smallish bumps, and it looks great. I think it is a great product and really a great value for a custom US made bike (and shock!). This really becomes clear when you shop around. I don't know if this is the best bike out there, but it is definitely the best bike I have ever ridden and certainly the most fun.
